A word from Buddakan - Philadelphia
Stephen Starr’s Buddakan is a spectacular restaurant featuring exotic flavors of modern Asian cuisine with creativity and drama. Bon Appetit notes, "The mostly white space is striking, with a lit-from-within communal table in the middle of the room, a waterfall & a ten-foot, candle-bedecked Buddha. The religious icon watches over hip customers indulging in pan-Asian cuisine that far surpasses the fare usually found at hot spots like this." Newsweek reports, "Design also serves as a signifier for cuisine. You walk into Buddakan, one of the hottest new restaurants in Philadelphia, past a shimmering waterfall & Japanese river stones & you say to yourself, 'ginger-miso everything' even before you see the magnificent 10-foot Buddha dominating the dining room." Named one of “America's Top 50 Restaurants" by Travel & Leisure and 'Top Restaurant for Fun' by Gourmet, Buddakan has become one of the country's most talked about restaurants.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I've been to the restaurant a few times over the years but just brought my new husband for the first time. The food was delicious and service great. I was pleased and he was impressed."

  • "Very attentive and courteous staff. The food was terrific in presentation and taste. Very expensive but very much worth it. I will be back."

  • "My husband and children treated my for dinner on my birthday. We ordered monkfish, lamb chops and chicken. I like the taste if lamb chop . I have not tasted lamb chop as good as this in any other places we have been. We all like the lamb chops."

  • "Difficult to hear conversation at table, it was so loud the group at the next table had to shout to be heard further contributing to the noise level."
    Dined on 7/23/2014
  • "Being a vegetarian is always a challenge even in comparable restaurants as Buddakan. We were pleasantly surprised by not only the decent variety of vegetarian offering but also the taste was great! Service was awesome as well! Would definitely go back!! A little too noisy for a romantic dinner though."

  • "We dined on a Tuesday @ 5:00; the noise level was very quiet, the service dedicated and attentive. The food is consistently world-class, the dining experience atmospheric; my guests and I have enjoyed dining here many times over the years when we want to "kick it up a notch." My most recent meal: Buddakan Style Sashimi, Red Dragon Tofu, and Coconut Mousse."

  • "I gave the noise level a three because it was happy hour, but I was able to hear my mate at the same time."

  • "I love the food at Buddakan, but they are certainly not generous with the cocktails. I ordered one of their specialty drinks and my glass was only a little over half filled. Would have ordered a second except not worth the price."
    Dined on 7/20/2014
  • "The food was outstanding. Although it was a very busy night, our service was excellant. Our only criticism was the music. It seemed to be dance music, with a heavy bass beat. The restaurant was full so it already was noisy. The music, both it's style and volume, made it difficult to talk during dinner. There's no dance floor there - play some "listening" music."

  • "A little disappointed with our server. Three of us went to dinner and 2 meals came out together. My meal took an extra 5 minutes or so. In between time, couldn't find our server or anyone else to ask to check on my food. Our server only came to the table to refill drinks, however never asked if we were ok or needed anything. Overall, the experience was good and the food was even better. I would go back in hopes of getting a better server."

  • "Buddakan was recommended by friend as a good restaurant for Asian fusion food and we decided to try it while visiting Philadelphia. We had requested a table on the balcony but were seated next to the bar where it was extremely noisy. We could barely hear ourselves talk or what the waitress was saying! Most of the patrons were young and hip, which we are not. We ordered the dim sum first and the dumplings were good. I ordered the roasted chicken with spring onions and roasted asparagus. The roasted chicken was good but didn't have much sauce. It seemed to be added afterwards rather than cooked with the chicken. My husband ordered the Kung Pao Fish which was tasty but not outstanding. White rice was $3 extra. Not a leisurely meal!"

  • "We hadn't been to Buddhakan in a while prior to our visit on 7/19/14, and our visit left us wondering why!! This restaurant consistently offers great food and great service. We had an excellent time."

  • "We I love this place. Do not over order. Great place. Problem : Hard to get a reservation. Butifyou can? Go. Go. Go. Go."

  • "The decor is fun and cool, except for the chairs, which are creepy (photos of faces staring at you). We had a few excellent items (tuna, mango lassi, and peking duck buns) and a couple that were fine but not really very special - nothing you couldn't get at your local Americanized Chinese take-out. Service was generally good, although it was sometimes hard to hear/understand our server because the restaurant was so loud."

  • "MY EXPERIENCE WAS DYNAMIC !!! There were two in our party, we had Asian Caesar salad, Cantonese egg rolls, aged beef, dungees crab sticky rice and for dessert, dim sum doughnuts with ginger cream and blackberry sauce. Everything was good! There was no complaint with our service!"

  • "Being from NYC I was told by a friend that the food at Philadelphia Buddakan is better than in NY. I have to say I think I agree. The decor is also minimalistic but beautiful. And the service by Michael was amazing. It's great to have a real foodie with a passion for the restaurant tell you about the dishes what goes in them and guide your experience which is what Michael did. The chocoloate bento box is a MUST ORDER. And I'm not ordinarily a dessert person."

  • "Our waiter was way off his game. First, we had to ask for a black napking instead of one being offered; then we had to ask him for it again after the meal was served. They did not clear appetizer plates before bringing the entrees, so the food runner was trying to juggle placement of the dishes and spilled sauce on the floor. As he brought dessert, the waiter dropped one of the donuts and said he would have the chef make another. After 15 minutes, I had to go find him (he was busy chatting with the hostess) and ask for the donut and the bill. A rather disappointing service experience, especially embarrasing as I had three guests with me and had raved about the restaurant."

  • "I'm not sure why this place gets the reviews it does, but the food is decidedly average. I've had much better Asian cuisine at other restaurants in Philadelphia that don't get nearly the hype this place gets. Having said that the ambience is nice and the server was polite and attentive."

  • "I just love the Starr restaurants and Buddakan is no different. This was our first visit to the Philadelphia location. Very quiet (it was a monday), quick service, and delicious. The Wasabi filet was buttery and tender. The small Calamari salad was huge and surely enough for 4 people. But my new favorite- the Edamame Dumplings! If you've never been to Buddakan or any of the Starr restaurants, do it! You won't be disappointed!"

  • "The servers were knowledgable and professional, but lacked personality. I don't remember my server's name. That said, the food and drinks were excellent. The edamame dumplings and wasabi mashed potatoes, which everyone recommends, were both good, but the duck breast was exceptionally prepared. My wife loved the Buddhas Cup cocktail. Also, for visitors, it was easy to get a table, and the neighborhood lends itself to post-dinner walks."

  • "Not too expensive, yet feels very fancy. Warm waitstaff, not fussy or intrusive. The ambience is the thing. I'd come back here for the ambience, but everything else was great too."

  • "My boyfriend and I would come back here for the dumplings alone! Everything was delicious and the service was excellent... A great spot to celebrate an anniversary!"

  • "Tremendous experience at Buddakan -- birthday celebration and the staff was wonderful and accommodating. As always, the food at Buddakan is the absolutely OUTSTANDING.....this was first time experience for 5 in our party and they all had a wonderful time! Thank you Buddakan!"

  • "Great edamame, and my friend loved her cashew chicken - said it was the best she'd ever had. Also enjoyed the selection of Asian beers. They were great about accommodating vegetarians, but unfortunately the accommodations left off some of the best parts - my veggie fried rice came without the curry foam because it's made with chicken broth, so it tasted like any other veggie fried rice."

  • "Our recent lunch took place on a hot summer afternoon after my daughter and I had gone crib shopping. We both ordered variations on the Bento box and were completely delighted by the wonderful tastes and lovely presentation. The sounds of the indoor waterfall next to our table made us feel refreshed and calm."

  • "I thought I had the worst seat in the place so that didn't help. Sever was ok and the food wasn't as great as normal."

  • "Our first time at Buddakan was during Restaurant Week. This gave us a nice overview so we decided it was worth another visit. We were not disappointed! Every dish was excellent from the crispy calamari salad to the hot and sour scallops. We had a vegetarian in our group and she was thrilled with the choices she was offered. We'll definitely be back."

  • "I had a great time treating my girlfriend to a birthday dinner here. The service was friendly and attentive. The birthday candle in the dessert was key! Great food too! Got the sea bass, lobster fried rice and cantonese spring rolls."

  • "We went with friends to celebrate each of our wedding anniversaries. Our server was very attentive and helpful. Our food- especially the curry cauliflower with cashews and scezchuan eggplant were delicious. We enjoyed the vegetable and shrimp dumplings best. The edamame dumplings had a pasty texture that we didn't enjoy, but our friends enjoyed their short ribs with chow fun noodles. At the end we were given little gold Chinese takeout boxes with truffles to celebrate our anniversaries. It was a nice touch."

  • "One of the best restaurants in Philadelphia. Great food and great service. Expensive but it's worth it"
    Dined on 7/7/2014
  • "I was probably most disappointed by our table. It was a small 2 top near the kitchen and there was a steady parade of waiters, busboys and managers whizzing by when inches of my shoulder. It was extremely annoying. The food and service was good, ...just good!"
    Dined on 7/6/2014
  • "The food was outstanding! The food melts in your mouth and makes you want more. There was not one bad thing we tried off the menu. The service was very tentative and helpful with recommendations but not too much that you feel overwhelmed or watched over during your meal. They were excellent in helping us choose a wine to go well with our meal and suggestions on the appropriate amount of food and selections to ensure we were able to try a variety of their choices. I would recommend anyone to try this restaurant especially for a special occasion!"
