A word from Buddakan - Philadelphia
Stephen Starr’s Buddakan is a spectacular restaurant featuring exotic flavors of modern Asian cuisine with creativity and drama. Bon Appetit notes, "The mostly white space is striking, with a lit-from-within communal table in the middle of the room, a waterfall & a ten-foot, candle-bedecked Buddha. The religious icon watches over hip customers indulging in pan-Asian cuisine that far surpasses the fare usually found at hot spots like this." Newsweek reports, "Design also serves as a signifier for cuisine. You walk into Buddakan, one of the hottest new restaurants in Philadelphia, past a shimmering waterfall & Japanese river stones & you say to yourself, 'ginger-miso everything' even before you see the magnificent 10-foot Buddha dominating the dining room." Named one of “America's Top 50 Restaurants" by Travel & Leisure and 'Top Restaurant for Fun' by Gourmet, Buddakan has become one of the country's most talked about restaurants.Continued

  • "My favorite resturant in the city. Delicious. Everything on the menu is superb. The staff is amazing. The cocktails are out of this world. Can't say enough good things about this place!"

  • "Found this restaurant after watching the TV Show, "Dangerous Grounds," as they mentioned the owner. Googled and found out that one of his restaurants was in Philly. We decided to try it on our trip and were not disappointed. I recommend the Bento Box for lunch, so you can try a variety of food. Of course, we all saved room for the "to die for" Dim Sum Doughnuts; a must try!"

  • "Highly recommend!! We are visiting from San Francisco with 2 kids (ages 9 & 11) and had a fantastic experience here! We ordered 5 dishes so we could try lots of flavors. They encourage sharing plates. Portions are unusually generous so we had lots of leftovers. Favorites were the eggplant dish and sea bass dish. The tofu with minced pork was also amazing. Beautiful interior with high ceilings, great lighting and huge Budda statue surrounded by candles made for wonderful dining ambiance. This would be good spot for a romantic dining experience, but everyone was also very kid friendly. Wish we could transplant a duplicate of this place to San Francisco!"

  • "My wife and I went to Buddakan for our first anniversary dinner. Neither of us is a terribly formal person, so we in fairly casual clothes (jeans, dress shoes, etc.). We were hardly the least formal there, so we weren't uncomfortable in the least. The lighting and decor of the place are great. Very relaxing and colorful, without being the least bit gaudy. The food was the real treat. We shared some kobe beef satay, and it was incredible. I got a dinner portion of the Korean Hot Pot (it was a special that evening), and it was the best of its kind that I've ever had, by far. My wife had the lobster fried rice, which was also quite good. No room for desert, as the portions were quite generous. Our waiter was excellent. A great experience"

  • "This was a fabulous meal. The food was outstanding and the service was amazing. Just a little too noisy."

  • "This was my first time at this restaurant. The service was amazing. My waitress was very attentive and checked up on us at the appropriate times. The servers were also attentive and did hound us to take our dishes away. The entrees are great and dessert is a must. I had Zen-gria and passion fruit lemonade (non-alcoholic) and they were well worth the extra cost. Now they get four stars instead of five is because we made a 5pm reservation and they don't open until 5pm. Most restaurants I have been too if you have a reservation at the time of opening, you can still come in and sit in the waiting room or bar but for this restaurant you had to wait outside. For some reason this annoyed me. If this annoys you too make later reservation."

  • "We have had last eaten here about 6 years ago. Great experience then, this visit proved less so. The food was good, but the portions small for the high price. The noise level rose as we ate, making it difficult to talk by the end of our meal. It is worth a visit if you are in Philadelphia and want a good meal in dramatic surroundings"

  • "Beware the portions are generous! By the time we got through apps, I had little room for my entrée. The tuna pizza is so good, fresh with a bit of a gingery kick. The duck buns were nice but not so different than I've had at decent Asian restaurants in CC. I had the cod and my date had the lamb chops. Omg! He got 5 or 6 chops. I had a bite and it was cooked perfectly. My cod was moist although a teensy bit underseasoned. The dessert was the only small portion in the meal. The chocolate gateau was amazing with the thai basil ice cream. Service was consistent and noise level was okay. If you are further from the bar, it's probably better. All in all, they made a special night very memorable."

  • "We dined here three times in thirteen days while visiting in Philadelphia -- because it was the best place we have been to in a long time and we only go to upscale restaurants. The food is wonderful and the staff is extremely accommodating and friendly. The Spicy Shrimp Bao Buns, Sea Bass and Miso Black Cod are outstanding. Everything was exceptional from the drinks through dessert. Try this place....you will love it!"

  • "Super loud restaurant with tables far too tightly spaced and waiters bumping into you as they whizz by. having said that the food is good and the atmosphere lively. Problems however with some orders being mixed up."

  • "Full marks based on the quality and variety of the food and wine available. Ordered the Dry Aged Beef - excellent.. And additional a couple of Lobster dishes...fresh crispy batter...light and very tasteful. Service was good...but not excellent."

  • "The food and service here is still as good as when it first open. Portions seem to be a bit smaller, but that is a sign of the time."

  • "Attentive service, recommendations were perfect . I was pleased with the vegetarian offerings. The edamame dumplings practically melted in your mouth. The roasted cauliflower with cashew was paired nicely with a curry foam dipping sauce and the vegetarian fried rice made for a tasteful journey. My husband, hesitant to try this Steven Starr gem enjoyed his crab appetizer and beef entree. We shared the chocolate bento box for dessert which was a delightful assortment of miniature chocolate treats. We also took the fresh donuts in 5 spice and sugar coating home to enjoy the following morning. Lightly warmed,They were a tasty treat with coffee. We will be back again..."

  • "If you are used to Buddakan NYC you will be disappointed. The service is average- our waitress was rude & was shocked we asked for soy sauce dishes when we ordered edamame ( she said we aren't a sushi restaurant so we don't really have those) of course after 10 mins she brought them over. In general she was grumpy and no one likes a grumpy waitress. The hostesses were great though."

  • "I think of this as a hot night out restaurant, but it was ideal for an early after the matinee dinner at 5 p.m. We had a cosy table by the waterfall with a good view of the Buddha. Cocktails and dinner were beautifully presented, followed by the dessert bento box to share. Perfect choice."

  • "I celebrated a milestone birthday at Buddakan. For 9 people, the family style service was perfect. The food was outstanding (especially the black pepper beef and the miso cod), and it just kept coming and coming and coming. We were all stuffed before the dessert arrived. . . but somehow we managed to power through! We simply had to because dessert was amazing as well. For a large group, Buddakan with family style dining is perfect. It is very expensive though, so I do consider it a special occasion restaurant. But so worth it for whatever that special occasion might be. The service was excellent as well."

  • "Buddakan never disappoints! The service is amazing--attention to every detail, but not smothering. Classy without stuffy. Love, love, love!"

  • "Went here for a birthday with a group of 6. We decided to try the sampler menu which provides pretty much all you can eat of a variety of appetizers, main courses and desserts for a fixed price. The menu states that it is for parties of 8 or more but our server said that the chef were scale his preparation according to the size of our party. You were allowed to substitute if there was clearly something you didn't want to try. I have to say that we enjoyed all of the dishes and went for seconds on a number of them. Our waiter was attentive throughout and the dinner was a complete success. If you don't mind the price this is one place where you will get what you pay for in quality and I would highly recommend a visit."

  • "Overall our experience was great. The food was fantastic and the service was great. We had the sashimi appetizer, the edamame dumplings, korean bbq rice, and the short ribs with chow fun noodles. Each dish was great, but that was definetly reflected in the prices. I was traveling on business so I knew the meal would be expensed. However given the price to portions ratio I probably would not go back if I were paying personally, unless very special occasion."

  • "My sister in-law said that Buddakan in Philly was her favorite restaurant, so hubby & I decided to check it out. We are native New Yorkers so I would say our standards are pretty high. Buddakan did not disappoint! It was great the ambiance the decor the food the service I was impressed. I had one of there signature cocktails Joy and it was perfect. We also enjoyed their lobster fried rice, it was excellent. For appetizers I had the schezuan pork dumplings- they were spicy & delicious (I love spicy food). I had the black pepper beef for my entree it was cooked perfectly!!!!!! I was stuffed didn't have dessert so can't talk about those, but I will be sure to return for that!!!"

  • "Perhaps it was the "sunday night " chef? We have been here about 6 times before, but maybe not in 2 years….The calamari salad appetizer was so so salty it was almost inedible (6/6 at our table agreed). The fried calamari was too salty and so was the dressing. Maybe they just dumped a handful at the end? The Miso cod, also one of our go-to-dishes was a bit to salty. All a mistake? Or a way to have customers drink more? We had the sea bass, and that was terrific, as was the tea smoked rib appetizer (as always), and the short ribs. The short ribs were very melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the bed of noodle before were really fun and delicious. Everything could have used less salt (or low sodium soy or miso)…but the calamari salad was terrible."

  • "I've been here several times, however this time was a little disappointed. The service was just so-so. Our waiter was knowledgeable, but he took forever to take the dinner order after the drinks and appetizer. The check took very long as well. The food was good but the lobster rice was really dry. Seats by the window were drafty."

  • "My husband and daughter took me to Buddakan to celebrate my 36th birthday. The food was excellent and the staff was very attentive. Our server was very helpful with regards to answering any menu questions we had. I would definitely go here again for a special occasion. They even put a sparkler in my sorbet."

  • "I was excited to go to Buddakan Philadelphia because of all the good reviews I read, but i was disappointed on my recent visit. Our waitress was exceptionally nice and helpful and the food arrived relatively quickly. Now, this is where we had the problem. When the food was served, the servers reached in between us and randomly set the plates on the table, ocassionally hovering over our heads with plates. There was not "pardon me" or "excuse me" uttered by the servers. At one point I thought a plate was going to be placed on my head!"

  • "I have eaten at Buddakan many times and always enjoyed it. On this occasion however I was very disappointed. The service was slow although the restaurant was empty. My chicken salad had almost no chicken and the duck entrée was dry, over cooked and tasteless. I will not rush back."

  • "loved this restaurant, excellent food and service, and beautiful decor!"

  • "The service was outstanding. Everyone from the hostess, the bartenders, the servers, and even the bus staff were polite and professional. Our server in particular was a delight and was funny and professional. The food is good. I would describe it as Chinese/Thai food for people who want to ease into Asian food. Overall the dishes were well executed just not "exciting". A lot of the food I could, and have, eaten in Chinatown for a fraction of the cost. That being said, this is probably due to the fact that I am 1st generation Chinese and have a mother that is one of the best authentic Chinese cooks =). Don't get it wrong, the food tasted EXCELLENT so don't let my previous statements deter you from checking it out."

  • "You'd be forgiven if thinking you'd accidentally walked into a nighclub as you enter Buddakan; the loud dance music that greets you is not very conductive for conversation. Me and my dining companion could not hear each other talk and did not speak for most of the meal. The concept of the restaurant seems to be large family-style portions meant to be shared, though the waitress immediately clarifies that the portions themselves aren't that big, but the restaurant is merely encouraging sharing the plates. The style is closer to tapas (with Asian food instead of Spanish), though most of the tables are not big enough to accommodate the large modern style plates the food is served on. The food was decent; the dumplings were the best part."

  • "It's divine! I love Buddakan. We took our Dad there the most recent time for his birthday. They bought out his dessert with a sparkler in it. The food was divine, as usual. I had one of my favorite appetizers: Peking Duck Buns. Love the hoisin sauce. For the entree I had the short ribs. It was fork-tender and unctuous. For dessert I always get the Dip Sum Donuts. It comes with 5 of these lovely little Five Spice Chinese donuts and 3 dipping sauces: chocolate ganache, ginger cream cheese and blackberry jam. Here's a tip: opt out of the chocolate ganache and get an extra serving of the ginger cream cheese. You'll thank me later."

  • "We went to Buddakan to celebrate a special occasion and the food was absolutely terrific! We had the tempura king crab and pork potstickers for appetizer followed by the black cod and short rib entrees. We also ordered the Chinese broccoli and wasabi mashed potatoes. Every single thing was fantastic! The food had so many flavor elements and was so interesting and unique. This restaurant was top of the line in everything. I would definitely recommend Buddakan to those looking for a fun night out with great energetic ambiance and delicious food!"

  • "We had a 6:30 reservation for 3 & were shown to our table immediately & greeted by a wonderful waitress. She brought water while we looked over the wine menu & glasses were kept full all evening. We ordered Edamame Dumplings (highly recommend!) to share, then onto the entrees. Dirty dishes & cutlery were whisked away quickly. Wine glasses were filled without asking. Service was superb! Entrees are served family style, in the middle of the table. We shared Chilean Sea Bass, Short Rib & Pad Thai with Shrimp. While all three were served sizzling hot & very tasty, the sea bass was prepared perfectly & the short rib actually had a crispy crust - it was delicious too! One appetizer , 3 dinners & one $78 bottle of wine = $210. We will be back!"
