  • "We have gone to Buck's for years. My impression is that its always on the cusp of being a great go-to neighborhood restaurant. Sometimes it seems that it has made it, and then we go again and it hasn't. For the last several times we went there, the dishes were overly salty. Savory is one thing; they were too salty. Still, its a comfortable neighborhood restaurant, and I hope this will change."

  • "We had a reservation and needed to wait about 10 minutes for the table; enjoyed a few minutes by the bar. Got seated at a nice table in the back, our server recommended snacks-- had onion rings and fried oysters that were tasty starts. All of our entrees were good and one of us had an appetizer for an entrée and that was fine. Good energetic and relaxed atmosphere and tasty, fresh food."

  • "The ambiance, service, and, most importantly, the food were all excellent. From our seasonal mushrooms and fried oyster appetizers all the way through the divine apple cobbler with creme fraiche dessert, my boyfriend and I LOVED our experience at Buck's -- winner of a Slow Food DC "Snail of Approval" award for good reason!"

  • "We are regulars at Bucks and it never disappoints. It could do with some carpet or wall coverings to mute some of the sound as it has been getting very busy lately."

  • "We only discovered Bucks a few weeks ago at a group dinner and we, my wife and I have been back twice since....its busy, noisy, fun and the food is great....definitely need reservations on the week end....."

  • "First time here after passing by many times...only tried several items so cannot comment on the others. ..what we had was mixed in quality...onion rings very good, mussels less so(some grit and many chewy), hamburger nothing special and costly, chocolate cake also good not great as some reviews implied...best dish $3 almond starter! atmosphere- likable and funky"

  • "Fabulous kale chips, tempura-fried onion rings, black bean soup--it was a comfort food evening."

  • "I had sent a message on Open Table to Buck's explaining that it was a friend's birthday and the four of us wanted the ability to hear one another. We were seated in a corner table as per request and made to feel very comfortable. The vodka martini was perfect. The iceberg wedge yummy, onion rings light, tasty and not at all greasy. My friend and I shared half a small steak and the quinoa dish. Both excellent and it would be difficult to claim a favorite. THe chocolate cake arrived with a lit candle and a game attempt by the waiter to sing Happy Birthday. It was not as rich a chocolate as expected but pleasant enough. Professional service and good food made it a terrific night of celebration. We look forward to future visits."

  • "Brought out of town visitors to Buck's for a mid-week dinner. The restaurant is decorated great and it's a cozy space. We all ordered steak in one form or another. Half of us ordered regular steak frites and half of us ordered their highly recommended filet. to be honest, while the more expensive filet was good -- it was pretty salty (having been marinated in soy sauce), so I think I prefer the regular steak frites. We didn't partake of dessert, but overall had a lovely evening and will return again for sure. Service was very friendly."

  • "I like the relaxed feel of the place. The staff were friendly and pleasamnt. An interesting and tastey menu."

  • "Bucks is always great fun; nearly everything on the menu is excellent - the pork chop, the rockfish with a carrot-ginger sauce, the steak-frites - and the wine list is pretty good too though we'd like to see more of them by the glass."

  • "As always, the food is great here. But it is so irritating to put up with the aloof hostessing and the inflexible kitchen (you can get the quinoa pilaf with or without the poached egg, but don't ask for the egg to be done in any other way). We had a 7:45 reservation and weren't able to sit until 8:15. If we had wanted to sit at 8:15, we would have made an 8:15 reservation. They wouldn't have allowed us to keep them waiting a half hour.... I think they ought to have sent a plate of nibbles our way to counterbalance the wait and hunger. Once we were seated, we had a very sweet waiter who was much more smiley/hospitable and apologized for the wait, which, while a small gesture, really does seem meaningful when you are hungry and tired."

  • "Went out to celebrate my son's birthday. He wanted steak, and a previous review raved about Buck's slab of meat, so we decided to try it. The room is cozy, and the hostess was welcoming. The onion rings appetizer was awesome, as were the fried oysters. Everyone enjoyed their meals, and the steak was tastey, but probably better shared, so that you can get a salad, too, since the meat is bare except for a small pile of fries. We all shared the tastes - we agreed the Shrimp and Grits were a gem. Desserts were a nice finish, though the cobbler was tiny compared to the others we ordered. Service overall was efficient and friendly."

  • "It was a pleasure to discover good food within walking distance. The rabbit was very well prepared and the smoked chard was particularly good. The wine menu was short but well chosen. The menu is a bit limited for repeat dining, but perhaps there will be seasonal specials. We found the tables a bit crowded together for real comfort."

  • "Love this place, the food, the ambiance. A hiccup this time: there is a postage-stamp sized table right by the front door which is uninhabitable in the winter. We finally relocated to the bar and had a lovely time."

  • "Bucks is our go-to when we want a delicious date night meal in style without fuss. The service varies; we've eaten at the bar and been treated right by the fabulous bartender and also had somewhat odd, aloof treatment at tables. No matter, the reliably yummy food is worth it. The hamburger is the best in DC, as are the fish and chips. There is also a delicious farro risotto with a fried egg on top that my husband gets almost every time. There is a decent wine list and some of the most delicious olive oil we've ever had. It gets a little loud indoors, but it's tolerable, and there is seating on the patio out front. I also love that it's two doors down from the best bookstore in Washington."

  • "I have been going to Buck's for many years, and this was one of the best meals I have had. The fried oysters were perfect, and I couldn't believe how many were in one serving. The steak (I had steak frites) was delicious. I can't wait to go back again."

  • "we have been going to Buck's for quite sometime and at first felt lucky to have it in the neighborhood. however, on this night, our server was grumpy and not at all accommodating. Our friend asked if she could have shrimp on her caesar salad (as shrimp is on the menu) and was told quite definitively - No, We Don't Do That. How very odd. The menu really doesn't vary - we wish it did. We also wish they would look into having draft beer as opposed to just bottled beer."

  • "the NY strip is one of the BEST in the city... kinda hard to believe given how unpretentious a place Buck's is, but feel very fortunate to have found this place and tried the steak - outstanding!"

  • "What a lovely evening. Fine food and wine complemented by wonderful service. Very personable, professional and yet relaxed. Restaurant was busy but not packed which allowed for a nice buzz in the room, but quiet enough enjoy table conversation. Fried oysters were served pipping hot and had a nice tang of hot spice. Plate large enough to satisfy three of us as a starter with our drinks. Would go back just for this, great snack on a cold evening. Steak, pasta and rabbit were all delicious mains of good size, we were too full for any desserts. Next time!"

  • "A small group of us went for a birthday dinner. The service was outstanding. The onion rings and sauce are out of this world. I had the shrimp and grits and the shrimp was way too salty. Another guest also thought the chicken was too salty. The steak frites, however, was terrific. I would rate this restaurant five stars if they could go lighter on the salt. The chocolate cake was fabulous, not too sweet. I had the lemon sorbet with creme fraiche gelato, which I highly recommend."

  • "Haven't been here since Carole Greenwood was chef. Glad I came back. The space is warm and cozy. The service was relaxed, yet attentive. Food was outstanding. Caesar, wedge and mushroom salads were stellar. Scallop app was delicious. The "world famous" strip steak with frites was perhaps the best steak I've had in DC and that includes all the name steakhouses, both chains and home grown. I won't make the mistake of ignorong this place for so long, again."

  • "It was our first visit here. The smokey sauce for the fabulous onion rings was outstanding--it could be put on anything. The horseradish dressing on the fresh wedge salad was a great change of pace. The steak frites was big enough to share. And that left room for one of the best chocolate desserts in DC--the chocolate cake. Gen was a very good server. We look forward to returning."

  • "Chocolate cake did not seem to be fresh and I was not given the chocolate sauce that usually surrounds the cake on the plate. They must have been out of it and instead put entirely too much whipped cream on the plate. Also, they did not have the lobster stew. Should bring that back."

  • "Quirky, fun, inventive food, and great service. Large community table down the middle of the restaurant is an interesting touch, but we are glad that we took another reviewer's suggestion to ask for a private table, at least for our first visit with friends. We will return."

  • "I've driven past Buck's & wanted to try it. 1/12 we had the opportunity. The name intrigued & I wanted to see inside. Great atmosphere & Sunday at 5 - ability to converse with table mates was perfect. Almonds brought by our waiter were tasty & cocktails (Manhattans - 1 up & 1 on rocks & a Martini on rocks) were good. However, we were stunned by the $13 per drink for "rail" liquor in a small neighborhood restaurant. 3 ordered burgers & 1 the half chicken. I can only speak for 2 who ordered burgers. They were OK, but not close to Clyde's & could use a warm bun. Fries - excellent. World famous chocolate cake has a way to go. Cut in half, add slab of vanilla IC, hot fudge sauce & you're at Hot Shoppe. I'll return, but order very differently."

  • "We had heard about this place for years and always wanted to try it. We finally went and were rather disappointed. The interior is rather gimmicky but we were most concerned about the food. It was so-so at best. Fish dinner was cool (even cold) and the $14 hamburger was tiny and over cooked (asked for it medium rare). Service was the bright spot but did not make up for below average food at very high prices for what you get. We wont be back....."

  • "An eclectic menu in a cozy venue with smart, attentive wait staff adds up to a very successful dining establishment. Their steaks are outstanding. Appetizers such as fried oysters (a hearty portion, too) and entrees such as lobster stew keep us coming back. Try their iceberg wedge salad!"

  • "The food was mediocre. We had heard so much about it that we were quite dissapointed. The duck meat was not tender and neither was the steak. The dessert carrot cake was fantastic however. We sat at the communal table, ordered a lot of food, wine and dessert. Unfortunately, we all felt the waitress was trying to rush us out. We didn't feel confortable sitting there for a while."

  • "Outstanding burger and outstanding service. Even at 6:30 on a Sunday night, the place was quiet enough for my father (with hearing aids and very sensitive to noisy restaurants) to enjoy his dinner. Just a few doors down from Politics & Prose, it's a perfect place to get a bite after a visit to the bookstore."

  • "This place doesn't do a ton of stuff, but what they do is excellent. Don't go here for innovation; go here for comfort food that is produced with greater taste and better ingredients than almost anywhere you can go. Great service and festive atmosphere; not too loud but still vibrant."

  • "On the eve of our son's returning to college we decided to have a family dinner. Buck's had been great on previous visits and this one turned out to be outstanding. Only complaint was a limited wine list...no South American, American or Australian wines. Food was great, service too. We'll be back."

  • "Very good, pleasant service and nice ambiance. The only downside was that both steaks at the table were undercooked and had to be sent back to the kitchen . Out table companion wasn't enthusiastic about his dessert of Apple cobbler."
