Both are unusual in my experience. Taking italian cuisine to a gourmet level more akin to french bistro style cooking/presentation (and serving sizes), rather than your typical 'ma n pop' italian restaurant (not that these aren't also fabulous). All menu items seem to have a unique twist, creating dishes that you would not find anywhere else. The falvour combinations are to die for, and every server seems to be a sommelier in the making- very informative and helpful, not to mention friendly. Located just off King St. W., Buca manages to create an intimate and quieter environment than one could imagine in such a busy district. Even upon walking in I felt like I was in for a treat.
For apps, the salumi board is a must along with the bread knots, which were flavorful alone, and when mixed with the meats, cheeses, and purees - amazing.
For mains, I had the bison clods which was so full of flavor even though it was mainly a meat dish with minimal sides. The bison was tender with wild mushrooms and a "pork rind" looking crispy topping, served on dark greens and a light puree. My date had the double-stuffed duck foie-gras ravioli dumplings, and the flavors were so intricate and delicious. It was cooked to perfection and almost melted upon biting.
Will definitely return. Be sure to reserve at least 1 week early!6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMAMAZINGI love italian food, and have been to Italy on MANY occasions, but Buca doesn't compare to ANYTHING else! They have an endless selection of cheeses and meats, so much so that their menu changes daily to accomodate it all. The double stuffed goat cheese and duck foie gras ravioli was one of the most delicious pastas I have ever enjoyed. I was disappointed with Buca's wine prices...as a wine maker and collector myself, I noticed mark ups in prices of some bottles well over 400%.....the cheapest bottle in the restaurant is $70....in actuality, a $70 bottle here is $20 at the LCBO.....
It would be nice if they had more affordable priced wine to match the affordable and delicious food....
