Despite the fact that our table was not ready for 30 minutes, the service was still outstanding. We were taken care of by each person who attended to our table. We loved the innovative decor (books for walls!) as well, but unfortunately that's where the charm ended. I ordered the Autumn Kaiseki menu and a majority of the dishes were confusing. The sashimi was tasty, and I regret not ordering the omakase instead. I really wanted to like this place, it had me at everything but the food. Sadly, at this price point the food is the one thing you have to get right.

Brushsroke was by far the best Japanese (American?) restaurant we've ever dined in. Ask to be seated at the bar so you can watch the chefs prepare each wonderful plate for you or other diners. The servers and wine steward were attentive and well informed about each morsel of food that came to the table. I wished we could have come back the next night to try the A La Carte menu. We chose from the 8 course menu and each course was more perfect than the one before.

I've dined in many New York Japanese establishments and this restaurant compares favorably. The food, presentation, service and decor exude a subtle, refined excellent. If I had to fault anything, it was the limited wine selection of American (California) offerings. It was truly a memorable, delicatible experience.

I really wish that I could give more than 5 stars, especially for the service, at Brushstroke. We were immediately greeted by the hostess, who opened the front door for us. Every time we got up to use the bathroom, the sommelier, a waiter, or another service provider would fold our napkins and pull out our chairs… every. single. time. The food was incredible. The autumn tasting menu was a really special treat. Everyone here treated us like gold, was extremely knowledgable and professional, and made everything just so special. The hostess even called the next day to thank us for dining with them. Wow!!! I can't wait to go back!

This is a rather expensive restaurant to be saved for special occasions ($135 tasting menu). We went for my friend's 21st birthday and the service was impeccable! We could not decide between three different desserts and ended up picking two - they brought the third to our table with a candle on it for my friend. After the candle unfortunately collapsed before she could blow it, they apologized and then came back a few minutes later with a set of cookies on top of which was standing another lit candle. The food was incredible (especially the sashimi) and the ambiance is wonderful. Could not recommend more highly! Thank you for a fantastic experience!

An exquisite dining experience! Was there with a guest for a weekday lunch, so it was fairly quiet. Only a few other tables were occupied. We both went for the lunch tasting menu. At $55, it's pricey but worth it in my opinion. The portions aren't large but the cumulative effect is perfectly satisfying. In addition to the appetizer, entre and rise entre, there's an amuse bouche (sakizuke) and dessert. The fish and other ingredients are first rate and the combinations of flavors and textures wonderful. Can't wait to go back!

I can't believe this place wasn't busier. We were one of the only 3 parties at lunch on a Tuesday afternoon, after the other two parties left we had the entire place all to ourselves. The food ranges from very good to amazing, and the $55 four-course lunch tasting menu has to be one of the best value in Manhattan. I don't understand people who complain that this is not "authentic" kaiseki. Please, you know you are dining at the restaurant of Danie Buloud, you know it's going to be HIS INTERPRETATION of Kaiseiki, and is not going to be exactly traditional or replicate what you had in Japan (which I've had several times in Michelin-starred establishments in Kyoto), and is going to be influenced by French cooking. Do yourself a favor, go!

We had high expectations for a David Bouley restaurant and Brushstroke did not disappoint. The service was very attentive and every dish was presented as a little work of art. The food was excellent! We each ordered the tasting menu - one straight and one with some supplemental dishes. The only dish I didn't love was the pork belly - but that's my own resistance to eating visible chunks of fat. The fish courses were all amazing! This is not an inexpensive night out - but you definitely get what you pay for!

This was our first visit. We both had the fixed menu which gives you quite a variety of items, including sashimi. I opted for the larger sashimi plate and didn't regret it. I also had the wine/sake pairing. This gives you a wine or sake with each course, and all were paired nicely. Service was prompt and efficient, and it was a pleasure watching the chef prepare the sashimi. While a bit pricey, it's far less that some of the other well-known sushi restaurants in NYC. I consider it good value for the money. This is a Bouley restaurant, and we also went to Bouly the next night, it's right across the street. Give them both a try.

As a Japanese I would like to say that my experience at Brushstroke was one of most authentic Japanese Kaiseki food I ever experienced in NYC. Plenty of real Japanese ingredient and really creative food as well as presentation. I would recommend anyone who want to experience real Japanese food but I think you must have enthusiasm and eclectic taste to understand this kind of high end food.

Tried lunch tasting, but it was actually a prix fixe menu. :) Sakiduke (amuse) was 3 kinds canapé; yuzu tomato, cauliflower truffle, okura dashi gelee. They were tasty, especially yuzu. Picked pacific jumbo oyster, uni, bay scallop, Meyer lemon dressing form as appetizer. This was incredibly yummy, but may be to fishy for typical non Japanese. Entre was Japanese snapper sashimi, osetra caviar & uni with radishes, marinade of camelina oil & Tasmanian mustard dressing. Loved rice entre, Alaskan wild king salmon sashimi & trout caviar, onion sesame wasabi purée. The purée was phenomenon and matches salmon. Dessert was matcha ice cream with sweatened black bean. This bean was perfectly cooked as a sweat. Thank you, Tsuji culinary school!

The entrees were the wagyu beef, pork belly and lobster rice. They were filling and delicious. Initially, the portions looked small but we actually had doggie bags. We could not even share a dessert, the three of us was so satiated. I would recommend a repeat anytime

So I choose this restaurant for my birthday. I however didnt feel it was very special because they charge you for all that money but the service wasnt that great. The food however was pretty good. They knew it was my birthday but no body came by to sign happy birthday, very disappointing I would be very careful if you have any allergies. we told the waiter that we cant have any seeds or nuts including fruits and we told them we were concerned about the sugar intake for the dessert portion of our meal. they switched our dessert for him to fruits and they had strawberry and blueberry in it. -_-

Great food, weak service. The service was invasive at times - too pushy when we had just sat down trying to get us to order a glass of champagne prior to giving us the drinks menu and was too standoffish when my glass was empty (for 20 minutes) before refilling it. The waiters also delivered drinks and food to me that were for my wife and vice versa
