Diner Reviews
  • "Great food, weak service. The service was invasive at times - too pushy when we had just sat down trying to get us to order a glass of champagne prior to giving us the drinks menu and was too standoffish when my glass was empty (for 20 minutes) before refilling it. The waiters also delivered drinks and food to me that were for my wife and vice versa"

  • "I had 2 young (age 17) with me with me who had never experieced Japanese cuisine. We were seated at a corner of the counter right near where all of the sushi and shishimi were being prepared. They were really blown away with the precision and beautiful presentation of this food being prepared. Then each course was brought to us beautifully presented, delicious in every way and to sum it all up -- perfect. Each course was wonderfully explained when they were presented to us. The evening at Brushstroke was a highlight of my dining experience in New York and the 2 young men with me enjoyed it so much that they still keep talking about their experience. I will be back. This restaurant is Outstanding!"

  • "We went to Brushstrokes after a friend who happens to be a chef told us about it. What a special evening. We were treated as honored guests, for simply dining there, and we had the pleasure of sitting at the sushi bar watching the chef expertly design his plates. The sushi and sashimi, as well as the Wagu beef were outstanding. The quality of the food, and the thoughtfulness that goes into each dish elicit high respectfulness. The saki was unusual and complimented the meal perfectly. Brushstrokes is a very specula dining experience."

  • "Dinner was beautifully presented, but just not great. Was good for a one time experience - but likely wont go back there as there."

  • "The cuisine is like Japanese-French fusion well executed. The waiter was attentive but for some reason although we ordered two eight- course KEISEKI menu and confirmed our choice of each dish with him, the kitchen though we ordered the six course tasting menu- the Keiseki includes a lobster soup and both meat and seafood main courses while the tasting doesn't come with soup and only gets meat or seafood. When I found out they skipped our soup course and served the fish main I told them we got the 8 coursed Keiseki, they reversed the order of the dishes… The orders of the dishes are very important in both Japanese and French cuisines and this is a high end restaurant so I was shocked how would they made such a mistake..."

  • "The food here is unique and special. But out waiter took himself - and the whole experience - WAY too seriously. He was insufferable actually."

  • "High quality fish but small portionS and high prices and therefore not real value; also wine list very expensive"

  • "We have been fans of Bouley for a long time. While the atmosphere was decidedly less opulent, it was inviting and comfortable. What seemed like a complicated menu became easily understood upon thorough explanation by our outstanding waiter. The cuisine was unlike anything I've had before and was memorable. The entire staff was courteous and well-trained. Highly recommended"

  • "Service was amazing, food prepared perfectly and served artfully. Empty plates whisked away, water never empty and questions answered promptly, politely and un-condescendingly. Lucky find for a special evening with friends and loved ones."

  • "Brushstroke exceeded all of our expectations. Had the Early Spring Kaiseki Menu - come with an ready palate and be prepared to smile with every bite. Drinks are a bit expensive but well worth tasting as well."

  • "Service was impeccable here - our server was super attentive and great. The menu is a little confusing and portions are small but it was a fun time for a group"

  • "I love trying great restaurants in NYC and around the world and this was one of the best dining experiences I have had. I tried the 6 course tasting menu. Each course came and each course I loved. The food was gorgeous, sublime, yet subtle. Excellent service and atmosphere. Just a beautiful and serene dining experience. "

  • "If you love the art of sushi and revere thoughtful construction of palate-engulfing bites, Brushstroke is a must. Our chef was a master as was the great Sesshu, master painter in the 15th century. Highest recommendation. Kaiseki experience is alive."

  • "Well the prefixed dinner was quite good it seems outrageous to charge $40 more for a small piece of steak to be added"

  • "We used to live in Japan and this was a great reinterpretation of the kaiseki experiences we had there. It was a unique Japanese dining experience for NYC.......definitely nothing like your neighborhood sushi restaurant. The seasonal dishes and presentation of each courses were very good. Loved the pork belly and the guinea hen rice. You have to be ready to eat lots of unusual foods if you want to really enjoy the experience. Picky eaters will have a hard time. "

  • "Every dish was executed exquisitely. Beautiful presentation. Wine and sake pairings really complimented food. Sommelier was very knowledgeable. Most enjoyable japanese meal i have had in awhile"

  • "Food was excellent , but service off for a restaurant of this caliber. Waited 10 minutes for someone to come over to table, asked for wine list and it never came. Then another waiter 10 minutes later dropped off menus and no wine list. Took 20 minutes (after asking) for a waiter to take our order then another 20 minutes for first course to arrive. At that point, everything came out in a tasting menu too quickly, three minutes between courses. THe food was excellent and and along with Cagen, can't get outside Japan."

  • "the menu at brushstroke is broad - covering sushi, cooked fish, poultry, and red meat. it feels like the variety results in the lack of specialization. we had sashimi, dumplings, and cooked fish dishes. all were beautifully presented and tasty, but none was memorable. watching the kitchen (as we did from our perch), there was a sense of proficiency, but not one of artistry. it came across in the food."

  • "The most fabulous dining experience I've ever had. The ceramics, the presentation of the food, the attentive staff, the sensational taster menu, the cocktails and the restaurant itself - everything was outstanding and so thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you!"

  • "Having eaten many times before and always enjoined dinner. The new alacarte menu was mediocre , the portions were to large and the plating appeared to be haphazard for the exceptionally high cost."

  • "This restaurant is right across the street from Bouley, and is under the same management, with cross-pollination of staff. Food is on a par with its sister restaurant, and service is better, but, alas, the ambience lacks any charm - strictly minimalist (except for the high-tech bathroom toilets!). But definitely go for the food."

  • "Fantastic experience from start to finish. Have dined here twice and was just as fantastic the second time around (the sign of an excellent restaurant). The service is impeccable, the somelier incredibly knowledgeable about both wine and sake (and remembered us from the last time we had dined here two months ago) and the food a treat, especially the sashimi. Highly recommend."

  • "We went to Brushstroke to celebrate my birthday. The service was EXCELLENT! And, the food was delicious. We decided to go for the sake and wine pairing on top of the prix fixe meal. The sommelier did an fantastic job pairing the food with the sake and wine. He picked some obscure wines as well which made it all the more interesting. While the price tag is quite high, it is worth it for a special occasion."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed everything about our dinner at Brushstroke to celebrate our 22nd wedding anniversary. It is pricey but you leave feeling like you've had a mini-vacation. The staff explains every dish but after a while, I didn't care what it was; I trusted that it would be delicious. Even though there is a set price for the menus, there are items with supplements and you will want to get at least one of those. I loved my cocktail, something intensely orangey with tequila."

  • "After living in Japan for 9 years there are few restaurants that meet our expectations. Brushstroke not only exceeded them but did so in a combination of excellence in every aspect, service to food quality. Highly recommended."

  • "Chef Ichimura creates a food experience unlike any I've experienced. Beautifully unadorned sushi/sashimi, intimately presented at a 10 seat bar. Not for the faint of wallet, but I'd skip a new winter coat for the opportunity to share the experience with someone who truly appreciates the best."

  • "Brushstroke is worth a journey but its wine list is thin, overpriced, and poorly served. The wine steward , not the sommelier, was very proud of his knowledge of the people behind the wine but sketchier about the character of the wine. A great restaurant deserves better."

  • "the food is amazing, especially the wagyu beef here. dessert itself is good actually. but with so many amazing dishes before it, it turns out being just-so-so. the chawan mushi, soup, and rice dish also deserved a high recommendation."

  • "our server was excellent and he seemed to know so much about the menu. when we were indecisive, he brought a third dessert for the curious george in me! So glad we decided to come here. However, the menu could be better especially the scottish salmon broth. it had a weird root vegetable that had a bitter aftertaste. The broth was good though."

  • "From the moment I walked in, I knew that this restaurant was not for me. While the staff were genuinely pleasant, the room was dead quiet with no atmosphere. Perhaps it's my preference, but I found it was so quiet that it was off-putting. Very light pop songs done in classical style didn't help much. The food was good, but most dishes did not blow me away. I found the beginning courses to be generally good, with the later courses a bit disappointing. The dessert was by far the weakest, with very few selections beyond something green tea related, and most incorporating some kind of beans. I guess I wanted something a bit more traditional, but there was nothing like that being offered."

  • "The kaiseki menu (no ala carte) is exquisite with multiple choices unlike others of this type. The service is impeccable! The only real issue is the cost. It starts out high and then there are multiple add ons which can raise the cost to the stratosphere. It is clearly worth the cost but you need to beware lest it outstrip your budget. Wine/sake/beverage service is creative and attentive."

  • "This was my second time at Brushstroke and after raving about my first meal there I found this meal to be even more inspired and delectable than the last. The tasting menu is spectacular- pop for the seasonal menu when you come in- you'll be glad you did. Waitstaff is abundant and knowledgeable. The tasting menu has many variations and food is well executed and beautifully plated."

  • "Price a bit steep for portion size, but food was flawless. When I spen $350 on a meal, I don't want to get a slice aof pizza before going home. Service was outstanding, can't find one flaw. Staff is extremely warm, which is a rare find in many snobbish restaurants in NYC lately. My only gripe was about the "water" service. While I did order trhe sparkling water, in no way did I expect to see 2 bottles charged for when there were only 2 of us. $16 for water really is annoying. Cocktails were superb, as was the wine. Wine list is a bit disappointing, not because of the selection, but because of the 400% markup...$15 bottles going for $65..c'mon now!"

  • "Great Saki menu. Waiter very attentive and very informative in helping Sake neophytes make a good selection. A little crowded with a few too many tables. Whenever my chair is right up against that of another patron, it feels too tight."

  • "This Japanese restaurant is very good in food quality and service. Be aware that you only have the choice between two menue style. The build out is sleek and clean. The service is very good but sometime to fast. The only negative point is the very high price. To have to spend around 150$ per person without wine when you take some specials you over 200$. Overall a great food spot but very pricy."
