Ambiance is important in any restaurant, but the true test is the execution through both food and service. Brushstroke provides a choreographed experience that rivals any ballet, with highs, lows, periods of sotto voce, and crescendos. The sashimi was amazingly fresh, cut perfectly, and just the right size. Their entrees were on the small side, but incredibly flavorful and beatifully presented. And the salmon rice was a wonderful cap to the meal. Service was beyond excellent - attentive, always available but never overbearing. I can't wait to go back for the 8-course tasting menu.

My daughter and I had no idea what to expect. We just wanted to experience something different and delicious. We were not disappointed at all. The Kaiseki menu featured many familiar ingredients prepared with precision and presented beautifully. As an example, the Hudson Valley Duck Breast smoked in oak, sansho, caramelized pecan, cranberry, wine sauce & miso sauce was a familiar taste of autumn combined with traditional Japanese flavors resulting in an exquisite new flavor combination. Additionally, we accompanied our dinner with the suggested wine pairing. This is definitely a must. The chosen wines and sakes were a wonderful extension of each specific course.

Just to be fair, the food was good, and I appreciate the artistic flair of fine Japanese dinning. That said, the selection is very minimal. You're basically stuck with a set course meal. We have a group of 5 and some of us wants the set dinner but some of us do not want the set dinner, and we don't have a choice to go both, it's either one or the other. We ended up all ordering a la carte. It's a nice spot if you are in for the romantic environment, sharing a conversation. With the set course, they pace you well...but if you order a la carte, the service is extremely slow. I appreciate the art of Japanese dinning and culture, but if you don't have a lot of patience, don't go. You'll need a minimum of 2.5 hours there. A side note, make sure you wear something warm inside in the winter, for aesthetic reason, they won't allow you to hang your coat around you or your chair. You either do the coat check when you enter the restaurant, or they will come and take your coat at the table as soon as you take it off. They wouldn't even allow me to hang my coat around myself for a little, while I was wearing short sleeves and it was 5'C outside.

With warm/friendly, top notch service, this is one of the best places to have high quality Japanese food. Dishes are fun, artistically prepared and delicious, wine/cocktails/drinks are unique and imaginative. Decor is simple, yet cozy and warm. The size of the place is relatively small, however they did an excellent job at fitting the Sushi bar, adequate tables in, with adequate comfort and extra space to spare. Overall, a place I would return to again and again!

This restaurant is a great change from the typical tasting menu. Many of the dishes were modern takes on classic Japanese food. The soup with the custard was to die for! We had the wine/sake pairings were a great compliment to the dishes. Not knowing a lot about sake, it was also a learning experience. The only criticism is that the courses came very quickly together. We would have liked a little rest time in between. The meal was pretty pricy but well worth the experience.

Something has happened to Brushstroke. The service attitude has gone downhill. No one is trying particularly hard, there's no real attention to the dining experience and especially in this part of New York, you have countless options that make more sense for the money spent. We've been here several times, but it's hard to imagine that we'll be going back. (Worth noting, even though it's called "Brushstroke Sushi" on the web, they don't serve sushi in the dining room.

Despite the fact that our table was not ready for 30 minutes, the service was still outstanding. We were taken care of by each person who attended to our table. We loved the innovative decor (books for walls!) as well, but unfortunately that's where the charm ended. I ordered the Autumn Kaiseki menu and a majority of the dishes were confusing. The sashimi was tasty, and I regret not ordering the omakase instead. I really wanted to like this place, it had me at everything but the food. Sadly, at this price point the food is the one thing you have to get right.

Brushsroke was by far the best Japanese (American?) restaurant we've ever dined in. Ask to be seated at the bar so you can watch the chefs prepare each wonderful plate for you or other diners. The servers and wine steward were attentive and well informed about each morsel of food that came to the table. I wished we could have come back the next night to try the A La Carte menu. We chose from the 8 course menu and each course was more perfect than the one before.

I've dined in many New York Japanese establishments and this restaurant compares favorably. The food, presentation, service and decor exude a subtle, refined excellent. If I had to fault anything, it was the limited wine selection of American (California) offerings. It was truly a memorable, delicatible experience.

I really wish that I could give more than 5 stars, especially for the service, at Brushstroke. We were immediately greeted by the hostess, who opened the front door for us. Every time we got up to use the bathroom, the sommelier, a waiter, or another service provider would fold our napkins and pull out our chairs… every. single. time. The food was incredible. The autumn tasting menu was a really special treat. Everyone here treated us like gold, was extremely knowledgable and professional, and made everything just so special. The hostess even called the next day to thank us for dining with them. Wow!!! I can't wait to go back!

This is a rather expensive restaurant to be saved for special occasions ($135 tasting menu). We went for my friend's 21st birthday and the service was impeccable! We could not decide between three different desserts and ended up picking two - they brought the third to our table with a candle on it for my friend. After the candle unfortunately collapsed before she could blow it, they apologized and then came back a few minutes later with a set of cookies on top of which was standing another lit candle. The food was incredible (especially the sashimi) and the ambiance is wonderful. Could not recommend more highly! Thank you for a fantastic experience!

An exquisite dining experience! Was there with a guest for a weekday lunch, so it was fairly quiet. Only a few other tables were occupied. We both went for the lunch tasting menu. At $55, it's pricey but worth it in my opinion. The portions aren't large but the cumulative effect is perfectly satisfying. In addition to the appetizer, entre and rise entre, there's an amuse bouche (sakizuke) and dessert. The fish and other ingredients are first rate and the combinations of flavors and textures wonderful. Can't wait to go back!

I can't believe this place wasn't busier. We were one of the only 3 parties at lunch on a Tuesday afternoon, after the other two parties left we had the entire place all to ourselves. The food ranges from very good to amazing, and the $55 four-course lunch tasting menu has to be one of the best value in Manhattan. I don't understand people who complain that this is not "authentic" kaiseki. Please, you know you are dining at the restaurant of Danie Buloud, you know it's going to be HIS INTERPRETATION of Kaiseiki, and is not going to be exactly traditional or replicate what you had in Japan (which I've had several times in Michelin-starred establishments in Kyoto), and is going to be influenced by French cooking. Do yourself a favor, go!

We had high expectations for a David Bouley restaurant and Brushstroke did not disappoint. The service was very attentive and every dish was presented as a little work of art. The food was excellent! We each ordered the tasting menu - one straight and one with some supplemental dishes. The only dish I didn't love was the pork belly - but that's my own resistance to eating visible chunks of fat. The fish courses were all amazing! This is not an inexpensive night out - but you definitely get what you pay for!

This was our first visit. We both had the fixed menu which gives you quite a variety of items, including sashimi. I opted for the larger sashimi plate and didn't regret it. I also had the wine/sake pairing. This gives you a wine or sake with each course, and all were paired nicely. Service was prompt and efficient, and it was a pleasure watching the chef prepare the sashimi. While a bit pricey, it's far less that some of the other well-known sushi restaurants in NYC. I consider it good value for the money. This is a Bouley restaurant, and we also went to Bouly the next night, it's right across the street. Give them both a try.
