A word from Browntrout
Browntrout is a comfortable, casual fine-dining experience. We grow our own herbs in our rooftop garden and we use sustainably farmed and/or organic products whenever possible. All our seafood comes from natural waters or sustainable farms. Our meats are all free range animals. We can seat 80 people in our dining room comfortably. We serve the same sustainable food for children as well. We have a large central communal table for large groups. It seats 16 people. We have a full Bar, plus Beer and Wine List.Continued

  • "Though the restaurant knew we had an 8 o'clock curtain (put in 'notes to restaurant' when I made the reservation thru opentable) they failed to get us out and fed in time. We had to leave before the entree's arrived - 70 minutes after we got to our table. Apparently, there was a radio review that day and the restaurant got inundated with customers. We did return after the play and had a terrific dinner with a very sympathetic server. The food was inventive and kudos to them for their efforts to sustainability. I was a little surprised that they charged us full price for our meals - if I owned the place, something - round of drinks or dessert, would have been on the house after that sort of a screw up."

  • "A lot of my friends have raved about this restaurant, know I finally know why. Really fresh, fresh ingredients done in beautifully creative ways. I had the rainbow trout and it tasted it as if I had pulled it out of the stream that morning. All the better since my fly fishing skills are limited. My Minnesota wife said the Walleye she had was the best she had ever tasted. That is high praise from someone who loves Walleye and has eaten it her entire life. Both dishes were done with extraordinary finesse and flavor. Not a large menu of offerings, but limited for a reason. They stick to a few seasonal items and do them very, very well. Will be back soon."

  • "This was the second time visiting Browntrout and this time was even better than the first. Small and simply menu but fresh ingredients with full of flavors and great cocktails. Shaved Butternut & Sprout Salad was uniquely refreshing and baby octopus and fluke were perfectly cooked. Both dishes used purees instead of sauces, which magnifies the flavor of the main ingredients. Great food and drinks are complimented by great service. This is one of the best bistros in Chicago. I hope it remains small and intimate."

  • "Great bargain on Oysters from 5-7 (double check that time) everyday. $1 each! Good cocktails. Menu is very limited and I would say more for Tapas style dining. Very few full main courses. The trout for the day was out by 7PM which seems odd since it was fairly early in the evening. Our server, Kevin was wonderful."

  • "I was challenged to find something healthy to eat on the somewhat limited menu. The hanger steak was good, the fish was not. Pork cheeks is a definite no-no. And on this particular night they were serving mussels and oysters ... not a good choice for me. Maybe a different night would have been better. Love the Thursday BYOB, but need more healthy choices."

  • "This restaurant has such a unique menu with something for everyone. The quality of the food was obvious and was prepared perfectly. I ordered the fried chicken and it was literally the best I've had in my entire life. We also ordered the curried mussles which was delicious as well. I can't wait to go back andd try the venison."

  • "I'd driven past here a number of times but never gave it a second thought until Restaurant Week and made a reservation when OpenTable suggested the option for the neighborhood. What a great meal! From the service to every course--our entire table raved about it. Kale salad? Sooo good. Pork loin? Wow! Risotto? I could sR you for days! The desserts were great too. Good, solid standbys--well made. Chocolate soufflé and apple fritters with brown butter ice cream. Delicious. Oh--and the house made ginger beer and citrus sodas were phenomenal. The whole concept of restaurant week is to try a place you've never been. That's what we did and are so happy for it."

  • "My boyfriend and I visited for my birthday dinner. We had reservations at Browntrout and were seated immediately upon arriving. It was Thursday night: BYOB night, and we had brought a six pack from the beer and wine store next door. We got water right away and the host (I think) gave us glasses for beers immediately. Unfortunately, once we were seated, we weren't greeted by our server for about ten minutes. In that small of a dining room, she should have seen us there. After that initial hiccup, the meal was amazing. The service was prompt once we began ordering. The burger was made of short ribs! The warm kale salad was one of my favorite dishes, and we got the fallen chocolate souffle and the ice cream flight. Delicious."

  • "We went to browntrout with our 10 month old daughter. On the plus side, they were great about having her. Overall the service was good. And the food was good too, but not that good. There was nothing that special about any of it. The drink I had was memorable, and none of the food was bad, it was just a little boring. Nice people, great location for us, good with kids, relatively inexpensive, just not great."

You can taste the difference in Chef Sean's food. His choice to locally source his ingrediants and hand make each componant is what sets Browntrout apart from other restaurants. Each bite of food is full of clean, bright flavors that please not only the pallette, but the soul as well.Truly delicious and amazing everytime, every dish. The atmosphere is nice, with a comfortable feeling, paired with the upscale food, makes this fine dining experience accessible to everyone."

  • "3 of us made a last minute reservation for Sunday dinner. What a find! Sunday night is fried chicken night, and a half price wine special, featuring a nice range from the full list (which features well chosen wine at every price level), adds tremendous value. We enjoyed the autumn green and wedge salads, crispy walleye, hanger steak and the aforementioned fried chicken and moved on to apple fritters and rice pudding with roasted grapes (both fabulous). Lots of restaurants are touting their local farm sources and seasonal cooking these days, but Browntrout really delivers. Highly, highly recommended."

  • "I had been waiting for a Sunday night when I could take my family to Browntrout for their chicken dinner; it was well worth the wait and we will return. Our meal started with the dollar oysters and kale salad. Two of us had the chicken special which came with garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli and one had a mushroom risotto. We added a half off bottle of wine to our meal. Certainly recommend getting a side of the rolls as my son who watches what he eats ate two. The live bluegrass music is a delightful bonus and keeps the room vibrant. Where can three people eat an outstanding meal prepared from locally sourced foods accompanied by wine with excellent service and live music for one hundred dollars? At Browntrout."

  • "This was our first visit to Browntrout, despite living relatively nearby. We had a 5:00 reservation so we could get to a 7:00 concert that night and were seated immediately. Our delightful server told us about the half-price wine offers and the fried chicken special for Sunday nights. It sounded so good that all of us ordered it. Even better, it lived up to the description and was moist, flavorful and delicious. I believe there were some herbs mixed into the beer batter but they were quite subtle and added some good flavor. We also tried a delicious selection of cheeses & the parker house rolls. The latter were the only thing that was a bit disappointing. You get four rolls for $6 but they were just basic dinner rolls. We will be back!"

  • "Farm to Table extraordinaire.The atmosphere is a modern, sleek dining room with all the comforts of home. The scent of smoked wood and the communal table is reminiscent of an "on the farm" dining experience. The food is amazingly comforting yet with an elegant twist.The menu/cocktails change with the seasons, and my Bratwurst Dinner was Octoberfest on a plate! Our cravings for a Fall Meal was scumptiously fulfilled. We began with the mellow smokey flavors of the Mac and Cheese with Bacon (enough for three-four people to share) and completed our dining experience with Rice Pudding/Concord Grapes/Glazed Pecan sauce, and a decedant Fallen Chocolate Souffle surrounded by a candied apple and caramel sauce.Great service/knowledged in winepairing"
