A word from Brothers Restaurant at Red Barn
The Nichols brothers, Matt & Jeff, grew up in Ames, Iowa where their love of cooking, good food and a sense of family and community was nurtured.

The 2013 opening of their second Santa Barbara Wine Country restaurant, Brothers Restaurant at the Red Barn in Santa Ynez, allows them to offer visitors and locals alike great food, wine and hospitality. The brothers strive to have legendary service, innovative cuisine, and a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere that causes you to return time and again.

As chefs, the brothers continue to experiment with new dishes and cuisine, but always with that “from scratch”, homemade element. Fresh ingredients from local producers, a wine list that showcases the region’s award-winning wines and a comfortable and historically interesting atmosphere that takes you back to the romance of the old west. They want you to feel at home, and experience all the best of Santa Barbara’s Wine Country.

Diner Reviews
  • "Although there are excellent fish and fowl offerings on the menu, their beef is done so well it is hard to order anything else. We did enjoy the tuna tartar as an appetizer and it is highly recommended. We have been here several times and it is always excellent."

  • "The "Brothers" are an institution in town with the best food and friendly service. The Prime Rib is one of their many specialities as well as the Tuna Tartare."

  • "Nice outdoor patio dining. Extremely helpful waitress staff gave excellent food recommendations. Sea bass special and off-the-menu trout were excellent. Steak and prime rib looked good on other tables, but no one in our small party tried it."

  • "My husband and I decided to dine at the Red Barn...(the first time) and secured a Friday night 6:45 dinner reservation. We arrived at 6:35 and were seated immediately. It may appear as a "red" barn on the outside but the interior was very modern with an open kitchen concept and a very active bar scene. We were seated in a very secluded section of the restaurant and enjoyed the "quiet" even though the restaurant was very busy. The menu was very good and the wine list was extensive, something you would expect being in the heart of the Santa Ynez wine country. The prime rib was excellent and prepared exactly as ordered... and the service was OUTSTANDING! Just the right amount of "attention". Overall, a wonderful dining experience!"

  • "This local restaurant has big city creative, quality, and delicious food. We ordered the pork chop as these guys are from Iowa and they know their pork! Would highly recommend!"

  • "We took friends who had never been there before and they loved the food. We have been there several times prior and thought it would be a great place to take them and the experience was top notch. Our friends are locals to the area and said that it will be number one on their list. We have had Prime Rib at several restaurants in California as well as in other states. The Red Barn earns the blue ribbon for the best Prime Rib. We recommend this restaurant without any hesitation."

  • "A great place for a nice dinner and drinks before an evening of entertainment at Chumash. We were looking for a nice restaurant before seeing Gladys Knight at Chumash. Great drinks, great meal, fantastic Lemon Cheesecake for dessert."

  • "We came here for my boyfriend's birthday - we had inquired around the town of Santa Ynez and Brothers had good reviews. It was definitely worth the higher prices than some other places in town. The service was excellent - not too much hovering but just enough checking in. I had the petit filet and my bf had the chicken - started with the leek soup and it was extraordinary. Au gratin potatoes with filet were very tasty - a bit rich but it was a birthday dinner so.....peas and carrots were cooked to perfection - not soggy, crunchy but cooked enough. We ended with sharing a creme brulee which was incredible! Along with a few cappuccios to end the meal, we had a great time. We sat back in a little corner so noise wasn't an issue for us."

  • "Knowing the Brothers from Mattei's and knowing how fantastic the dining experience was there I expected the same from their new location at the Red Barn. And I was not disappointed. I had the salmon which was the best I have ever had and living in Las Vegas and dining in the best restaurants in Las Vegas I think that says a lot. My friend had the rib eye and it was cooked to perfection. Service was also fantastic. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "These guys have it down! They have a word-of-mouth following that is well deserved. Can't find anything wrong with their new place at the Red Barn. Their food (and service) has always been great and continues to be."

  • "In its new location, the Brothers' Restaurant serves the same great food and exceptional service. But that is also a bit of a problem. The menu never changes. Most of the main courses are meat (delicious), but everything seems to come with one form or another of mashed potatoes. We like our steaks chops with a baked potato, which seems to be beyond the culinary skills of the chef. That said, everything else is perfectly prepared, and the staff is friendly and accommodating. I would like to see more "specials", including a pasta of the day."

  • "As always, The Brothers put out some of the SYV's best food with fresh ingredients prepared simply and tastefully. It is "homey" kicked up a notch. And everything is made from scratch. This is definitely a locals favorite. If you are around on Thursday, they serve filet mignon tacos in the bar...not to be missed. "

  • "If you are interested in their wonderful food...do not go on a thursday night when the place is raucous (some sort of special deal)--big bar crowd, noisy people, bad service. Last March, we went on a Tuesday night and enjoyed an elegant evening. "

  • "We were wine tasting and thinking of going to another restaurant when we heard about The Red Barn. We were really glad we went. The food is very good as is the service. They have a good wine list and they make good drinks as well. The only thing I think needs improvement is the wine by the glass list. We will be back. "

  • "Another wonderful and perfect meal, food, service, ambiance, choices..... The restaurant in the Valley!"

  • "I expected an establishment of this caliber and reputation would be able to make a classic cocktail. i.e. a Stinger. They didn't have the ingredients. The food is top notch."

  • "Once again a fabulous meal at Brother's! The filet is outstanding. I love the new location, however they might want to hire a decorator to warm things up a bit. I don't come for the ambience, I come for the food which never disappoints!"

  • "The food was outstanding, as was the service. One of the best prime rib meals I have had, with an extremely attentive waitstaff."

  • "We love the food. Hubby had pork chop and I had salmon. Both delicious with a great wine accompaniment....we started with the ahi appetizer which we both loved. We skipped dessert but had coffee. We love the food, the service and will always return."

  • "This is an overall 10 dining experience! The food and service are consistently great; the ambiance very pleasant. We love sharing this restaurant with friends and meeting friends for the Thursday night bar specials."

  • "We stayed next door at the For Friends Inn, which was also spectaular. They recommended this place as well. Simple food which is very well done and the service was outstanding. We were up celebrating a friends birthday and anniversary and this was a great find. We will definitely put this on the list for a return visit. The NY strip steak special was perfectly done and our friends had an outstanding pork chop. A bit noisy inside, but we were out on the patio. "

  • "Dinner menu could offer lighter fare. It's mostly big meat items with one chicken dish. We got halibut (which was a special, not on menu) and trout which both were amazingly delicious. The halibut was $32 and the trout was $24. Very pricey for fish. The service was great and the overhaul of the restaurant was very nicely done. All in all we were impressed. However, at $73 for two dinners, not including drinks, this will have to only be a special occasion restaurant for us. "

  • "Amazing view, best service I have ever had! Food was great, large portions with lots of flavor. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a night out. Family friendly."

  • "A great place for a special occasion. Both the service and food are outstanding. The prime rib was amazing and the lamb chops were delicious. The tuna tartar was spicy and elegantly served in a martini glass with wonton crisps for scooping. The bread is all homemade and the memorable favorite was the rosemary and salt focacia. The mud pie was a superb ending to a wonderful meal."

  • "The brothers do things right....good food, good service and attention to detail. I am glad they've now got two restaurants in the SY valley for us to choose from. I so like the trout they prepare and serve. We will return many times."

  • "Great restaurant for celebrating any event; could be a perfect spot for a romantic meal or a night out with friends. We stopped in the night before a wedding in Solvang. Great service. Steaks cooked to perfection. Amazing dessert!"

  • "The Nichols brothers have opened the fourth place in the Valley (Sides Hardware in Los Olivos is also still open). Here they have updated the old steak hangout, the Red Barn, in Santa Ynez. As always, the menu is basically comfort food executed at a high level, with simple, excellent starts (house-smoked salmon is especially good). Reasonably priced wine list, heavy on local selections, plus warm and professional service."
    Dined on 4/1/2014
  • "outstanding food experience. should have a display counter for all your breads and desert so that we could bring some home."

  • "We had a table of six and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals, and the wine list was lovely. The service was exceptional - this wonderful restaurant will ever disappoint, I'm certain."

  • "We have been anticipating our dinner since the Red Barn has opened. We were regular diners at Matteis Tavern when the Brothers were there and loved the food and service. I am so glad to see they brought the salmon back with the brown rice/veggies. It was my favorite and I loved it. Hubby had the pork chop and it was cooked perfectly. We started with the ahi appetizer and had a bottle of wine. An overall good meal....well worth the long wait for them to finally open!!"
