A word from Brothers Restaurant at Red Barn
The Nichols brothers, Matt & Jeff, grew up in Ames, Iowa where their love of cooking, good food and a sense of family and community was nurtured.

The 2013 opening of their second Santa Barbara Wine Country restaurant, Brothers Restaurant at the Red Barn in Santa Ynez, allows them to offer visitors and locals alike great food, wine and hospitality. The brothers strive to have legendary service, innovative cuisine, and a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere that causes you to return time and again.

As chefs, the brothers continue to experiment with new dishes and cuisine, but always with that “from scratch”, homemade element. Fresh ingredients from local producers, a wine list that showcases the region’s award-winning wines and a comfortable and historically interesting atmosphere that takes you back to the romance of the old west. They want you to feel at home, and experience all the best of Santa Barbara’s Wine Country.

  • "Had no idea we were in for such a wonderful experience. The Prime Rib was the best I ever ate and the Trout was prepared and served in a way that the dish was a dining delight. Service was friendly and timed perfectly. The experience made two couples very pleased with their Anniversary night out."

  • "My wife and I recently celebrated our anniversary at the Red Barn. The food was excellent. She had the prime rib and I had a filet steak. Both were outstanding. I also had the French onion soup which was excellent. The service was terrific. The only complaint was that it was a little noisy and at times difficult to carry on a conversation. Overall we had a great experience."

  • "We celebrated my wife's birthday(on the QT) at the Red Barn; we had been to their "brother' restaurant, Sides, Hardwares, etc} and thoroughly enjoyed the food and service; we decided to give the Red Barn a try since we frequent the area regularly; we were not disappointed with our experience at the Red Barn and have decided to make it part of our stops on our next visit to the Santa Yanez Valley, the food and atmosphere were excellent and was not rushed to order or complete our dinner; we certainly recommend the establishment to anyone looking for a pleasant dining experience."

  • "What a great find in Santa Ynez! Dinner was excellant. Lori's prime rib was perfect and my porkchop was delicious. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Enjoyed dinner with our friends from Napa. They have fine eateries in their St Helena community and they raved about their food. The energy and conversation flowed. Especially good was the rack of lamb!!"

  • "These chef's are amazing. The regular menu is wonderful, but they also have daily specials that are a real treat. Every server is highly trained and friendly and courteous. Besides my favorite menu item, rack of lamb, they make my favorite hamburger! We go there to celebrate special occasions or just to have a good meal."

  • "I'll go anywhere the brothers are. Their food is so outstanding. Prime rib is better than you can get anywhere and if you are a lamb lover you have never tasted better. All their food is delicious. I don't like overhead lights casting down and creating shadows on the table. Kind of stark. I'm more the cozy type and appreciate fresh flowers on the table, but really enjoy the outdoors. I would go back and sit outside but not inside."

  • "There were four of us for dinner after wine tasting in Las Olivos. This was an easy drive from there and we were not disappointed. Food and service was excellent t. We all said we would return. This is a gem."

  • "Everything at the Brothers Restaurant at Red Barn was amazing - impeccable service timed perfectly, a great wine list with local Central Coast favorites, and FRESH, delicious fare - carrots and snap peas picked from the garden fresh - and grilled meats cooked to perfection - the filet was juicy and perfectly seasoned, as was my husband's lamb dish and my friend's selection of the goat cheese stuffed chicken breast... Oh and can someone say "meyer lemon cheesecake"? Yes please! Will definitely be back!"

  • "We ordered the shrimp appetizer special with wine pairings, then the prime rib and filet. Everything was wonderful, we left nothing on our plates!"

  • "This restaurant has one of the best prime rib dinners I have ever had. The food is always prepared perfectly. It's a little on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for, which seems to be a lacking theme among other restaurants."

  • "We ordered the Tuna Tartare for starters. It reminded us of poke, which we love! It had a spicy ginger sauce and served with wonton chips. Delicious. My wife ordered the filet mignon and I had the ribeye, both cooked perfectly medium rare and bursting with flavor. We ordered their merlot/cab/shiraz blend and it went very well with the steaks. For dessert we tried their homemade sorbet (raspberry, dark chocolate, and coconut). It was served with a dark chocolate olive oil cookie. Despite the dessert being dairy and gluten free, the sorbet was genuinely creamy and the cookie soft and chewy."

  • "The food was very good, however price was not justified. Menu is limited without salads and smaller entrees, e.g., a burger."

  • "The salmon was excellent. The rib eye just ok. The service was very good with a waitress who knew the food and the menu."

  • "We had been to Brothers at Mattei's Tavern a number of times, and were disappointed to hear that was closed. Then heard about Sides and Red Barn. We went during the day, and checked it out. Same menu, new location. Not as eclectic as Mattei's, but nice. Dinner could not have been any better!! We had Chicken stuffed with Goat Cheese Rib Eye Both utterly fantastic!!"

  • "Although there are excellent fish and fowl offerings on the menu, their beef is done so well it is hard to order anything else. We did enjoy the tuna tartar as an appetizer and it is highly recommended. We have been here several times and it is always excellent."

  • "The "Brothers" are an institution in town with the best food and friendly service. The Prime Rib is one of their many specialities as well as the Tuna Tartare."

  • "Nice outdoor patio dining. Extremely helpful waitress staff gave excellent food recommendations. Sea bass special and off-the-menu trout were excellent. Steak and prime rib looked good on other tables, but no one in our small party tried it."

  • "This local restaurant has big city creative, quality, and delicious food. We ordered the pork chop as these guys are from Iowa and they know their pork! Would highly recommend!"

  • "My husband and I decided to dine at the Red Barn...(the first time) and secured a Friday night 6:45 dinner reservation. We arrived at 6:35 and were seated immediately. It may appear as a "red" barn on the outside but the interior was very modern with an open kitchen concept and a very active bar scene. We were seated in a very secluded section of the restaurant and enjoyed the "quiet" even though the restaurant was very busy. The menu was very good and the wine list was extensive, something you would expect being in the heart of the Santa Ynez wine country. The prime rib was excellent and prepared exactly as ordered... and the service was OUTSTANDING! Just the right amount of "attention". Overall, a wonderful dining experience!"

  • "A great place for a nice dinner and drinks before an evening of entertainment at Chumash. We were looking for a nice restaurant before seeing Gladys Knight at Chumash. Great drinks, great meal, fantastic Lemon Cheesecake for dessert."

  • "We took friends who had never been there before and they loved the food. We have been there several times prior and thought it would be a great place to take them and the experience was top notch. Our friends are locals to the area and said that it will be number one on their list. We have had Prime Rib at several restaurants in California as well as in other states. The Red Barn earns the blue ribbon for the best Prime Rib. We recommend this restaurant without any hesitation."

  • "We came here for my boyfriend's birthday - we had inquired around the town of Santa Ynez and Brothers had good reviews. It was definitely worth the higher prices than some other places in town. The service was excellent - not too much hovering but just enough checking in. I had the petit filet and my bf had the chicken - started with the leek soup and it was extraordinary. Au gratin potatoes with filet were very tasty - a bit rich but it was a birthday dinner so.....peas and carrots were cooked to perfection - not soggy, crunchy but cooked enough. We ended with sharing a creme brulee which was incredible! Along with a few cappuccios to end the meal, we had a great time. We sat back in a little corner so noise wasn't an issue for us."

  • "These guys have it down! They have a word-of-mouth following that is well deserved. Can't find anything wrong with their new place at the Red Barn. Their food (and service) has always been great and continues to be."

  • "As always, The Brothers put out some of the SYV's best food with fresh ingredients prepared simply and tastefully. It is "homey" kicked up a notch. And everything is made from scratch. This is definitely a locals favorite. If you are around on Thursday, they serve filet mignon tacos in the bar...not to be missed. "

  • "In its new location, the Brothers' Restaurant serves the same great food and exceptional service. But that is also a bit of a problem. The menu never changes. Most of the main courses are meat (delicious), but everything seems to come with one form or another of mashed potatoes. We like our steaks chops with a baked potato, which seems to be beyond the culinary skills of the chef. That said, everything else is perfectly prepared, and the staff is friendly and accommodating. I would like to see more "specials", including a pasta of the day."

  • "If you are interested in their wonderful food...do not go on a thursday night when the place is raucous (some sort of special deal)--big bar crowd, noisy people, bad service. Last March, we went on a Tuesday night and enjoyed an elegant evening. "

  • "Knowing the Brothers from Mattei's and knowing how fantastic the dining experience was there I expected the same from their new location at the Red Barn. And I was not disappointed. I had the salmon which was the best I have ever had and living in Las Vegas and dining in the best restaurants in Las Vegas I think that says a lot. My friend had the rib eye and it was cooked to perfection. Service was also fantastic. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "We were wine tasting and thinking of going to another restaurant when we heard about The Red Barn. We were really glad we went. The food is very good as is the service. They have a good wine list and they make good drinks as well. The only thing I think needs improvement is the wine by the glass list. We will be back. "

  • "I expected an establishment of this caliber and reputation would be able to make a classic cocktail. i.e. a Stinger. They didn't have the ingredients. The food is top notch."

  • "Once again a fabulous meal at Brother's! The filet is outstanding. I love the new location, however they might want to hire a decorator to warm things up a bit. I don't come for the ambience, I come for the food which never disappoints!"
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "The food was outstanding, as was the service. One of the best prime rib meals I have had, with an extremely attentive waitstaff."

  • "Service was very good. The prime rib was killer, very flavorful. Will be back again."

  • "Food was mediocre and uninspired service was very good"
    Dined on 5/11/2014
  • "This is an overall 10 dining experience! The food and service are consistently great; the ambiance very pleasant. We love sharing this restaurant with friends and meeting friends for the Thursday night bar specials."

  • "We stayed next door at the For Friends Inn, which was also spectaular. They recommended this place as well. Simple food which is very well done and the service was outstanding. We were up celebrating a friends birthday and anniversary and this was a great find. We will definitely put this on the list for a return visit. The NY strip steak special was perfectly done and our friends had an outstanding pork chop. A bit noisy inside, but we were out on the patio. "

  • "Dinner menu could offer lighter fare. It's mostly big meat items with one chicken dish. We got halibut (which was a special, not on menu) and trout which both were amazingly delicious. The halibut was $32 and the trout was $24. Very pricey for fish. The service was great and the overhaul of the restaurant was very nicely done. All in all we were impressed. However, at $73 for two dinners, not including drinks, this will have to only be a special occasion restaurant for us. "
