A word from Brothers Restaurant at Red Barn
The Nichols brothers, Matt & Jeff, grew up in Ames, Iowa where their love of cooking, good food and a sense of family and community was nurtured.

The 2013 opening of their second Santa Barbara Wine Country restaurant, Brothers Restaurant at the Red Barn in Santa Ynez, allows them to offer visitors and locals alike great food, wine and hospitality. The brothers strive to have legendary service, innovative cuisine, and a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere that causes you to return time and again.

As chefs, the brothers continue to experiment with new dishes and cuisine, but always with that “from scratch”, homemade element. Fresh ingredients from local producers, a wine list that showcases the region’s award-winning wines and a comfortable and historically interesting atmosphere that takes you back to the romance of the old west. They want you to feel at home, and experience all the best of Santa Barbara’s Wine Country.

As always, the menu is basically comfort food executed at a high level, with simple, excellent starts (house-smoked salmon is especially good). Reasonably priced wine list, heavy on local selections, plus warm and professional service."

I am so glad to see they brought the salmon back with the brown rice/veggies. It was my favorite and I loved it. Hubby had the pork chop and it was cooked perfectly. We started with the ahi appetizer and had a bottle of wine. An overall good meal....well worth the long wait for them to finally open!!"

  • "Instead of driving back to Santa Barbara to celebrate my Birthday, my beautiful fiancé Julie and I decided to stop in Santa Ynez and try out the Brothers Restaurant at Red Barn. I had tried them when they were over at Mattei's Tavern, and wanted to see how the food compared. Well, it was just as awesome as ever. We started with a "Mashed Potato" sampler, then on to the Vegetable Spring Rolls, followed by Scottish Salmon for myself and the Filet Mignon with Scalloped Potatoes for Julie. And a wonderful special dessert to finish. The food was perfect, the inside decor was very nice, and our server, Staci, was incredible. It was a perfect Birthday dinner and we can't wait to go back!"

  • "Once again the Nichols Brother opened another successful restaurant and bringing more business to Santa Ynez. Even though it was to be a similar menu to the Brothers Restaurant at Matteis Tavern, I found the recipes and quality of the food to be off or not what I remembered. It is a little pricey for me but it still is excellent food, dessert is yummy and the wine list is very good. The manager is great, very welcoming and the wait staff was good, always checked on how we were doing even if they weren't our waiters. Message to Open Table. They received my reservation for one and I was confirmed from you for two."

  • "We dined on Friday with two other couples who also frequent the Red Barn. We booked three days ahead and most of "prime" time was taken. We had a 5:30 which was perfect for six people to gather and order before the crowd. The restaurant has been beautifully remodeled and the food is consistently excellent. I had the scallop special and my husband had prime rib. He ate all of his and I took half of mine home. The split the Spring Rolls as an appetizer and two desserts were split by the table- Bread Pudding and Mud Pie. I usually order the trout which is excellent. Yes we will go again and again."

From the sweet potato chipotle soup & house made smoked salmon appetizers to the pork chop and prime rib main courses and walk a mile for house made chocolate and raspberry gelato - a tour de force for the Brothers! Our first visit (we have been to Sides Hardware & Shoes multiple times - yummy) and it will be must go to dining for us. Not to be missed!"

  • "First, when we got there we were shocked that the handicapped spaces were so far away from the front door. The waitress was constantly available to make sure we got what we needed.The breads were excellent .The table was was very small and crowded. The appetizer was excellent and tasty. The main course, my wife had the prime rib and she shared the vegetables were excellent but the meat was a little tough and fatty. I am a vegetarian and had the veggie plate. It was adequate nothing special the vegetables were roasted and very bland. We also had desserts they were excellent my wife's lemon pie was the best ever! My dessert was the flour less cake special it was also excellent except the raspberry sorbet was much too strong."

  • "I had the sole prepared like everywhere else, francaise with fresh green beans and carrots with nothing on them. The mashed potatoes were way too salty so I only took a taste. Nothing special. I can make better at home. Not something I want to say after eating at a restaurant! My husband had the pork chop which he described as comfort food. Not expected at a restaurant that touts itself as being innovative. The only innovative dish was prepared by the pastry chef, a lemon cheesecake that was perfectly balanced with sweetness, tartness and lemon flavor. In an effort to rush us on a Tuesday evening, the waitress delivered the bill while we were still eating our dessert!"

  • "The two brothers have done it again, reopening at the remodeled Red Barn in Santa Ynez. They've brought that slow cooker they had at Matti's with them and the tenderest prime rib I've ever had. All the food is organic and sourced locally. Having been butchers, the two brothers. butcher, age and cut all their meats on site. The spot on my list for best restaurant in Santa Barbara County has been waiting for them to reopen and threy have claimed it once again."

  • "First trip to the Red Barn was on a Thursday night and the place was pretty busy, especially the bar. We had reservations and were seated within a minute or two. Joanne, our waitress was excellent. The food was very similar to what the brothers did at Mattei's Tavern. We each had the small prime fillet and it was done perfectly, served with crispy potatoes, green beans and carrots. The wine list was good, but overpriced, especially with a hundred wineries in the area. Bring your own bottle, corkage is $15. They have done a nice job remodeling. It's basically a big room, with a lively bar off to the side that spills into the dining room. Very noisy, but the food and service makes up for that. Will definitely make this a regular stop."

  • "The Brothers' continue to combine excellent service with outstanding cuisine at the Red Barn. Their menu from Matteis is well-reflected at RBarn, but their are some new additions, as well. For me, I find it hard to resist the rack of lamb with goat cheese mashed potatoes: just a wonderful meal. Service is exceptional. Diane and Terry remain with the team at the new location, and they are two of the most friendly and conscientious servers ever. JC captains the bar and the overall tempo of the restaurant -- super guy and he executes his duties well. Lastly, Jeff & Matt are providing some wonderful food to their multitude of fans.
