Diner Reviews
  • "Lured to Brooklyn Girl by the special Bastille Day menu. Two starters, steak tartare and crispy sweetbreads, were the best we've ever had, including those we've had on innumerable trips to France. There are so many fantastic things to choose from that most restaurants don't offer: a huge selection of oysters, roasted bone marrow, duck a l'orange, very fresh fish, and on and on. The wine list is outstanding and very reasonably priced. We had profiteroles and a Pavlova for dessert; it doesn't get any better than that. A whimsical blackboard defines Brooklyn Girl: "n., a female with a foodatude." We'll say! Great service and décor. A happening place with an owner who comes by your table to chat. Five stars! Can't wait to return!"

  • "I have eaten here many times with friends since I moved to Mission Hills several months ago. The food is great! All my friends love this place."

  • "I was looking for a place close to Cinema Under the Stars that had good reviews and this fit the bill. The waitress did not smile and was not friendly nor attentive. The kale salad was not worth the price nor was it tasty. There were lots of brussels sprouts in the order; I prefer mine salty rather than sweet. Had a lemon drop at the bar first; the bartender was nice but too busy to be attentive. Trendy place for the younger crowd."

  • "Our Waiter, Patrick, was fabulous in trying to meet our individual needs. He was neatly groomed, very attentive but not invasive, had multiple suggestions of how to change things if we wanted, and produced great and tasty results. To top it off, Patrick has some great art work on the walls of the restaurant, Great guy!"

  • "Frequent BG because of the ambiance and competent service, good food, but this visit, a rather over zealous waitress couldn't keep herself from pushing items and trying to assert dishes to order. Overall, the restaurant continues to provide good staff and food. Enjoyable place with energy. Noise makes it challenging for good conversation but remains a favorite spot."

  • "I will not be returning to Brooklyn Girl. There are so many great restaurants in San Diego, why waste time and money on average? It took one hour to get our food. The oysters were minuscule. The main course (4) all required condiments to add flavor. If you don't believe me, eat a burger or veggie lasagna at The Red Door and compare those to Brooklyn Girl and you'll know why I consider it average - you will too."

  • "We have found Brooklyn Girl to be a very good restaurant and were excited to share it with friends. Disappointing this time, however. The brined pork chop was tasteless and dry and the cheesecake was also dry. Hopefully, it will be better if we decide to give it another try. Great Back Pocket Mules, though!"

  • "The food, service, and overall experience was great. It was a bit noisy but that was part of the fun vibe. We'll definitely be back."

  • "Brunch menu was great. Had crab cake benedict and it was excellent. A little noisy for conversation but food is great."

  • "Staff were extremely accommodating of a dietary restriction & everything tasted great. The décor is a kick. It just took a pretty long while (Sunday, Father's Day, and it wasn't too crowded yet) and the kids were overdue for meals when food finally arrived. I'd still recommend it as an adult-friendly place."

  • "Brooklyn Girl is great! We've been here since they opened and we love it. The place is very pleasant, the food is great, especially their pizza and sides, the bar is also great. The owner is very kind and friendly, she always greets us with a big smile. She had the really nice gesture of sending a complimentary cake for our friend who we were celebrating. If you haven't been, go here, you'll be pleasantly surprised."

  • "This was the second time I was at Brooklyn Girl. The first time was just for a quick drink before going to movie across the street - it was excessively noisy (music too loud in space that did not dampen the accumulation of noise from patrons and music - made it uncomfortable to talk). Second time prompting this review request was for dinner which was delectable - excellent combination of flavors and presentation. It was much less crowded but still a bit too noisy (feature of the architecture I fear) which makes it less intimate an experience and distracts a bit from the food. Service was very pleasant and efficient. Although first experience getting our drinks took way too long (was very busy but still 20 min for 2 simple drinks too long)"

  • "The food was excellent, and the service very attentive. The room has no acoustic dampening--some decorative acoustic tiles at least would make it much, much more pleasant. One could not hear him/herself, much less a dining companion. "

  • "Always enjoy dining here at Brooklyn Girl. Their food (popcorn and meatballs) along with their cocktails (old-fashioneds) are the best Love the ambiance!"

  • "The service was awesome. Patrick our server provided us with a very memorable experience. The food was not as memorable. We were celebrating my wife's B-Day and she ordered the duck (her go to dish and the reason we were there) but this time it was not as good as we remember. The portion was good, but the flavor was lacking. We even sent back the spinach appetizer we ordered. Patrick noticed we weren't quite enjoying it and graciously offered to take it back and remove it from the bill...we accepted :-)! The oysters on the half shell were excellent (a little pricey, but very good). I had the lamb tenderloin, which I would not recommend. We may return for the oysters and the service, but I don't see us running back for the entrees."

  • "I have been to Brooklyn Girl numerous times for brunch and dinner. Out of all the times I have been there, I had the best experience for my birthday dinner. Most notably, I was given a 'Birthday Dessert' of their Bread Pudding. It was insanity. I wasn't even in the mood for dessert and I couldn't stop eating this. My aunt, who doesn't like bread pudding even said, "this is not your mother's bread pudding". I would highly recommend splurging on dessert. Their pastry chef has got it right. Also, a great find was the seafood platter. I split it with my mom and it came with delicious assortment of oysters, fresh clams, dipping sauces/mignonettes/aoli and crab legs. It was a great option that didn't put us in a food coma. "

  • "The lasagna has no pasta so it's a tasty gluten free option. It's a unique dish of layered slices of eggplant, carrot (we think parsnips as well), leeks, cheeses and a pesto sauce. We usually get that with the roasted duck. We arranged a birthday party with 8 of us and had a great time."

  • "I absolutely love Brooklyn Girl! The ambiance reminds me of being in a fabulous eatery in NY, it's the most comfortable, the best. Every time I dine or stop in for a cocktail I'm never disappointed. I had the salmon special on my last visit, it was the most delicious salmon dish I've ever had. "

  • "This is a great restaurant…food and service are outstanding. Casual but very good. This is a well run operation. We were offered a 40th anniversary Caymus Cabernet which was an excellent choice. Selections from the raw bar are excellent. Pork and seafood dishes are great."

  • "Brooklyn Girl never disappoints. From the minute you walk in the door it's all good. The hostesses are friendly, food is consistantly excellent and service is just right. Always something new on the menu or a new prep on an old dish. Had we not been in public we would have licked the dish that held the bread pudding. "

  • "Service was outstanding. My husband dropped a fork on the floor & someone was there right away with a new one. Really enjoyed the duck -- it fell apart beautifully with a nice crispy & tasty skin. I think I'll try having a couple of appetizers & skip the main course next time since there were so many to choose from!"

  • "We were thrilled to discover Brooklyn Girl when it first opened a few years ago. But what a disappointment now. The menu is uninspired and overpriced! My bill was $140 for three people and that was without drinks. The popcorn was mostly kernel and no pop. The crab salad was flavorless and minus the crab. The highlight of the evening was the cheesecake for me, but not enough to lure me back. "

  • "the only thing we did not love was the time it took to get our drinks. it took a while to get our cocktails all throughout the night. maybe they need more bartenders? otherwise, we had a great time and the food was delicious."

  • "It has been a year since I was last here because we don't get to Mission Hills very often . The food was just as good as I remember and the ambience too. You really can't go wrong ordering. I had the famous hummus (yum) and the steak salad. It was perfectly spiced and delicious. Will go back sooner than later."

  • "Yet another gastropub in SD without any substance. We arrived for our reservation on time, yet they wouldn't seat us for nearly 10 minutes, even though there were 6 tables open. Service was either rude or non-existent. Busboys were the most attentive staff. The main reason we wanted to try this place was the braised pork shanks, which they were out of. We ordered cornbread, which came out completely burnt. Our group ordered Brined Duroc Pork Chops, Brown Stone Brick chicken breast, and the Margherita Classico pizza. All were just mediocre. The pork chops were best, albeit a bit bland, but the vegetable hash was tasty. Overall we were disappointed. There are many places in SD with both excellent food and service. This isn't one of them."

  • "Such a cute restaurant, good food and have been several times. But if you're looking for intimacy, this is not for you. Very noisy."

  • "We came to dinner with an infant and everyone was super friendly and accommodating. Our table ordered the meatballs, the flautas, the pork shank, the veggie lasagna, and a pizza. Everyone enjoyed the food and the ambience of the restaurant. They seem to have an option for all people. I will definitely be back to try more!"

  • "Was excited to come and check this place out after reading about it in a local magazine and reading Yelp! reviews online. While the ambience and space itself were very amenable, both my BF and i felt the food was lacking a certain something - considering the price point and somewhat limited menu. We were however impressed with the wine & cocktail list - oysters were fantastic. Our server was super and really great about sending my sea bass back to be redone after the first dish was over cooked like leather. Might like to try again on a weekend for brunch instead. Great spot for a glass of wine though!"

  • "It was okay. I was bummed that I was charged for a drink that I disliked and was sent back. I didn't want to complain so I dealt with it. My friend and I weren't greeted for 18 minutes and it definitely wasn't busy enough to have to wait that long. I won't be back for a while."

  • "We are from Portland, a town known for great restaurants. We eat at Brooklyn Girl every time we visit San Diego. It would do well in Portland because the food is fantastic. There is something on the menu for everyone, creative dishes, large portions, excellent service. Just a terrific experience. We've sent many friends here and they all agree."

  • "We went to this neighborhood eatery on the advice of a couple we met on the plane to San Diego who said the duck was superb. They were right--we ordered duck for two with root vegetables served in a cast iron skillet and it was excellent. Great raw bar, very friendly vibe, gorgeous bar. Service was excellent, laid back, and friendly. Definitely recommend!"

  • "It's hard to get into Brooklyn Girl without a reservation. It's busy; it's loud; it's got Woody Allen and Scarlett Johansen on the wall (even though Woody is a Manhattanite). I was excited to finally try it, since I'd heard do much about it. It was good, I'd go back. But it wasn't THAT good. We ordered wine; two glasses arrived promptly, but the third came an awkward 20 minutes later. We ordered the Kale Caesar salad - tasty, but I've had better, and they didn't offer black pepper. The gluten free options, like the cauliflower "cous cous" was wonderful. The pork shank was tender and delicious."
