The Broadmoor Bistro is a student-run skills application by the students at Broadmoor Technical Center in Shawnee Mission School District.

The Broadmoor Bistro has been in operation since fall of 2000 offering an evening dining event created and served by culinary arts students enrolled at Broadmoor Technical Center. Broadmoor Technical Center, located at 6701 W. 83rd Street, Overland Park, Kansas offers culinary arts and commercial baking instruction to students enrolled in Shawnee Mission School District high schools. Students create menus, cook, serve and run the Broadmoor Bistro.

The Bistro is a 2008 constructed 3,000 square foot addition to the Broadmoor Technical Center. A bakery, kitchen and classroom with auditorium seating and a full culinary display kitchen, about 4,700 sqft, were remodeled in 2007.

  • "Four out of the 7 people attending the dinner did not receive their 5 course dinner paid for. We waited 3 hours & 25 minutes for nothing, not even a cup of coffee or dessert. We expressed our concern to the front desk manager & she completed ignored our concerns. The student server kept apologizing. Because the front desk took walk ins, which caused for those of us who made reservations a shortage of food, poor service & cheated out of a paid in full evening out, we will never recommend this technical center The dress code is a joke, because the poorly managed front desk allows in dirty dressed blue jean walk ins, who ate our food, took our servers & disrespected the ambience it was suppose to offer a total waste of $210.00 & $60.00 tip."

  • "Broadmoor Bistro is a fun dining experience where high school student prepare and serve the meals as part of the special culinary arts curriculum for the Shawnee Mission School District. The small plates dinner menu that was served the night we went included a wide variety of items with evidence of real skill in completing the plates. All were good to excellent. Service would be the only complaint and that is only a modest concern. Service was somewhat slow and the staff was not as attentive as we would expect in a top restaurant but the interest was sincere and the overall experience was very good. Our first time but it will not be our last."

  • "We love the Broadmoor Bistro. It's the only high school culinary program affiliated with the James Beard Foundation. It truly is a neighborhood gem. This was our first time going to a dinner with a menu created and supervised by a guest chef. We had a delightful evening. The students bent over backwards to serve us. We tried some foods we have never dared to try before such as sweetbreads and raw fish. It was a five course meal, but the portions were moderate, so we weren't too stuffed to enjoyed the dessert. The menu is pre fixe but one of our guests doesn't eat meant and the restaurant substituted fish for the pork and beef on the menu. The Broadmoor Bistro gets 5 starts in our book!"

  • "I enjoyed Broadmoor Bistro with a small group of friends to celebrate a special occasion. It was a great choice for our group. We attended during a Chef's Series night. The six courses played out over almost three hours. The food combinations were eclectic and required most of us to reach outside of our food comfort zones a bit. Don't miss out on a tour of the facilities. My only real complaint was the seating. We were a party of six seated down a long row of tables where the chairs were very tightly spaced. Closer to the end of the evening unused chairs were removed, which gave us some much appreciated breathing room. This is a culinary school. It's amazing to experience what motivated teenagers can do."

The Broadmoor Bistro in Shawnee Mission Schools is serving up more than delicous food at a fair price by training excellent young people to know the right way to enter the world of food service. Congrats to all!"

  • "We really enjoyed our time at the Broadmoor Bistro. The food was a little frou-frou so I had a little bit of a challenge finding enough items that I was ok with. The food I did get was delicious however. My husband, who is a little more adventuresome, loved the interesting items on the menu. The highlight is knowing that high school students have prepared the food and worked really hard to make it a delightful evening. We were impressed!"

  • "The food was tasty and the menu was well thought out. I think they ran out of appropriate utensils for courses which did not match. I was surprised to have to eat the main course with a salad fork and desert with a dinner fork, the soup spoon for coffee and the teaspoon for soup. the service was rushed and my dinner was taken away on two courses before I was finished eating. As soon as my fork touched my plate, my food was whisked away before I could say something. The students rushed around in a hurried manner but maybe were pressured on timing of food with the kitchen. I would have to say that when dining out, I would like it to be an experience, not rushed, but savored. I did not feel that way. Would fewer courses be more relaxing?"

The menu was creative; it was difficult to choose each course because every menu item was appealing. Our server was a young man who would have graduated on time but has chosen this career pathway to further himself post-high school. He was extremely knowledgeable about the food being served and could easily give us details about each item, thus deconstructing what was being served. This is an impressive program, a bargain for those that enjoy fine dining, and a wonderful opportunity for young students interested in a career in the culinary business. Broadmoor Bistro deserves our support."

The menu has a variety of selections, and every morsel of food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious.   • "From the hostess' welcome to the server's farewell, a dinner at the Broadmoor Bistro is to be savored. The best part of the meal was the exquisite parsnip bisque, which recipe the chef was happy to share via email. Each dish was prepared with care and artfully presented. The portions sizes were perfect, not overwhelming. Dessert was the weakest point, good but not memorable. Too bad that it is not possible to have a glass a wine with such a wonderful meal, but we understand that liquor laws do not allow underage students to serve alcohol, and alcohol is not permitted on school grounds. The students in the district who are interested in a career in food service are very fortunate to be able to hone their skills in this venue."

  • "I can scarcely believe the Bistro has been just down the street from me for over 10 years and this was my first time there. We had such a good time - I thought the food was fantastic and very original; the high school students were very fun to talk with; the space was pleasant and not noisy, which was important to us and 2 of the 3 of us are hearing challenged. We did have to ask to be moved when we were first given a table because there was too much of a downdraft on us. But the second table was fine. I am looking forward to taking the tour next time, too."

  • "What an incredible evening and experience! Everything from the tour of the classroom and kitchen facilities to the 5 course dinner was a treat. We were a group of Shawnee Mission South grads (one of which is now a teacher at BVNW) who all commented on the professional and impressive program that the school district is offering. "Back in the day", creative options like this were not part of the curriculum. We thoroughly enjoyed the menu, it was innovative and delicious, and each course was prepared precisely to my taste. It was obvious to us that the students all took their jobs, whether it was serving or preparing the meal, very seriously. We were all very impressed and plan to return another time!"

  • "Seven of the 8 in our party had never been to Broadmoor Bistro (some hadn't even heard of it). Amazing culinary experiences provided by soph-senior students in Shawnee Mission School District. Only open to public on Wednesday nights. You won't find such dishes anywhere else in KC Metro area. Dinner consists of four courses of your choice and every dish (and there were 32 dishes served to our table!) was visually attractive and delicious. I personally fell in love with the carrots served with the roasted pig cheeks, and several of us shared maybe one, with someone else. Universal agreement that no better carrots could be found anywhere. You gotta imagine that SMSD is training some awesome chefs of the future!"

  • "Very nice experience. Something way out of the ordinary. The food was very good and it was fun to watch the students wait tables. They were very polite and attentive. This is not something I would do on a regular basis, but it was fun for a special occasion ours happened to be my husbands 77th birthday. One plus, no one would ever be able to guess where you are taking them for dinner."

I've been several times and each time the menu has been on par with the best restaurants in the city. The food is superb and presented beautifully.   • "This was a second visit for my husband and me. We had recommended it to friends and they treated us to this occasion, both times the food was beautifully presented and very well prepared. The food, service and ambiance would compare favorably to any fine restaurants in the Greater Kansas City area. Its only two draw backs are that it is only open on Wednesday night and does not serve wine because on the age of the students serving the tables. This was not important to us."

High school students are cooking and serving, and generally learning how to do these things. This current Italian menu isn't amongst my favorites, but food was very good, and I got to try wild boar. Well worth the money."
