A word from Brine
BRINE is the newest of Nancy Batista-Caswell’s inventive restaurant concepts. With BRINE, her hometown retains the buzz from two exciting eateries that she’s brought to New England through picturesque Newburyport.

BRINE’s sleek, stainless and Carrera marble bar, industrial lighting and ample galvanized furnishings make the fresh fish and butchered meats the stars of the show. Drop by to chose from a daily smorgasbord of Ceviche, Crudo — fresh Bivalves, Tartare, Sashimi, Carpaccio — Cotton, Brandade, and Espumas in addition to select prime cuts and butchered chops. Carpet Baggers, Daily Dock specials and Po’boys will round out a menu of Italian and Spanish influences.

Fans of our sister restaurant Ceia will find operational and culinary fluidity between these two hometown Caswell Restaurant Group establishments. Cheers!

  • "My husband and I made a reservation for Brine on a Wednesday night and had a wonderful experience! My husband got the wine and brine dinner and I had the sirloin. Everything tasted wonderful and our server was knowledgeable and friendly. My only recommendation is that you make a reservation before you arrive!"

  • "We made our reservation same day through Open Table, couldn't be easier, had a 5:30 spot! Bar was happening, restaurant 2/3 full. Immediately upon seating we were approached by our server Mac! She was absolutely wonderful, answered all our questions gave us proper space but never kept us waiting!! She was fabulous, food was inspired! Eat the provided bread as the portions are small, but please savor them, you don't get this quality of food everyday (if you do you are blessed!)"

  • "This was our second visit and everything was just as good as the first. The staff was very knowledgeable about the food and wine. Like most gourmet restaurants the menu is limited but changes often. On our first visit we enjoyed duck and swordfish, the second visit was arctic char and monk fish. Presentation and preparation were perfect. The reason we first tried Brine, however, was for oysters. Although selection was limited to 6 types they were sweet and delicious. Price is on the upper end, but you get what you pay for. Overall a great place for casual dining."

  • "We dined at Brine in Newburyport. This was a great place to find for for our dining choice. The food selection was classy and unique, but for a seaport town, it offers a wonderful variety of fresh seafood and some meats. All of the offerings let you have the size and flare for the meal you're looking for. We enjoyed fresh salmon and swordfish, both were great. Good for drinks and appetizer, or small meal, or a full dinner. We are already planning our next visit with friends!"

  • "Visited Newburyport on a weekday to escape the crowds. We happened upon Brine after a quick check through OpenTable. Very quiet time of day. Waitstaff of Ann and Andrew were attentive and engaging. Wife and I enjoyed the oyster po'boy and the fresh oysters. My only negative was no Jack Daniels. Other than that would go back again to try dinner"

  • "A place to be seen and heard. High energy on a Sat night with very high noise level. Can be great for those who want that. Not a place for comfort. Very close/tight quarters and upright seats. Service person was very good and did not rush despite the energy. Menu seemed limited to me. The quality is very good for what is served. The steak filet and char were hits. Rib-eye was end piece and overly fatty. Cod on level of fish and chips. The place has a lot of life and is in the middle of everything. It will work for a lot of people. Know what you're getting into first, before spending a good amount!"

  • "We brought friends of ours here from Chicago. We all enjoyed the evening! Catherine the waitress gave us great service. The oysters on the half shell were excellent as was the oysters Rockefeller. My monk fish dish was cooked just right and the sauce was delicious. Two of us had the haddock entre and were quite pleased. The Pain Killer cocktail brought me back to my fun time in Saint Thomas......! The seating is a little tight, but, we dealt with it. All-In-All a nice experience!"

  • "Brine is nestled in the wonderful main street area of Newburyport. Excellent farm to table choices including some of the most "healthy" cocktails I have ever had...love the martini menu. Seafood is excellent, service is outstanding, atmosphere is casual and inviting. Venue is small, so it is best to make reservations for a weekend evening."

  • "We love to use Open Table to try new restaurants and with my husband's travel, the points quickly add up to cash in for a meal. While we totally enjoyed our experience with regards to our food at Brine, we were put off by their inability to process our gift card (which I called to find out that it was fine) and their unwillingness to consider the problem might be theirs. Not sure if I will go back again, but I hope they work out the kinks."

  • "We had a mixed experience. Some items were excellent (oysters, bluefish pate), others were surprisingly bland (swordfish, halibut crudo). The fish portions were quite small, (about 4 oz for the main courses) for $26+. The waitress was friendly and knowledgable but the kitchen was very slow."

  • "This was my second visit to Brine in 1 week. My first experience was so tremendous, I had to go back right away. It was equally as good so the owner is running a tight ship! All the staff are pleasant and warm. The food is prepared perfectly and the flavors are deliciously blended. Personally, I am not able to eat shell fish unfortunately, but my friend did and he said they were outstanding and super fresh. Also really nice that the menu has some other choices for those that may not enjoy fish. The bartender Drew is very well spoken about the wine and makes a superb cocktail! Well done Brine!"

  • "This place is absolutely phenomenal! My husband had been resistant to try this place but I finally won out and he's happy I did. The place is small which for me is absolutely perfect. I had oysters (choice of 3 sauces/mignonettes), the smoked blue fish pate' (heavenly) and the dinner special (petite sirloin cooked to perfection). My husband had the clam chowder (awesome) and a sausage sandwich. Unfortunately we didn't have room for dessert but that can be for another time. We can't wait to go back! :D"

  • "The food was outstanding. We had the swordfish and the cod, both great, cook to perfection. The asparagus soup was good, but didn't know it was going to be cold. Sometimes restaurants can use too much jargon and it doesn't tell you in direct terms what it really us, which was the case in point. The service, however, was quite slow, we went through 3 baskets of bread waiting."

Always exceptional service, very knowledgeable staff, food and presentation and timing of the food / apps is always perfect. Waters were refilled so many times (that is usually my pet peeve when water is not refilled!) Just A+ all around, love this place, will definitely be back, and recommending to everyone.... FAVORITE restaurant in Newburyport. My other half agrees."

  • "What an unexpected find in a little brick-lined pocket in Newburyport--delicious fresh oysters, raw fish entrees, exceptionally inventive small plates (bacon, eggs and fried oysters with spicy chile sauce or green and white asparagus salad with tiny quiche slices), and superb main courses (perfectly cooked fish, filet mignon, and a personal favorite,duck breast with sausages). Don't miss the cocktails--especially the beet-infused vodka "Up Beat", though there is also an extensive list of hand-crafted beers and an unusual selection of fine imported wines. In a word, fantastic--we returned 5 times and took everyone we knew during our brief visit to the town and we were never disappointed."

It's a tight space and a bit loud, but a vibrant atmosphere. We asked for a good table in our reservation because of the occasion, and the hostess obliged with a romantic window seat.   • "We've eaten at Brine a couple of times, once last summer, and again last night. The meal was mostly terrific but was marred by the deserts. We started with oysters and the grilled octopus, they had a wonderful selection of Massachusetts oysters, all of which were wonderful. The octopus was also excellent. For our main courses we had the monkfish and the duck, both of which were brilliant. Now for the bad news, the desserts were awful. I had the souffle Grand Marnier, it was practically inedible because they topped it with an incredibly salty raspberry sauce. My wife had a frozen yogurt mousse which wasn't terrible like the souffle but it also wasn't very good. We had the same reaction last year, we loved everything except the desserts."

  • "This was our second visit to Brine and we were just as pleased as the first time. The service is great and everyone is both friendly and helpful. My daughter and I shared a selection of oysters which were delicious. For lunch I ordered the Oyster Po Boy which is excellent and flavorful but really needs a few more oysters in the sandwich. My daughter had the Shrimp BLT wrap which was packed with shrimp and flavor! She really loved the combination of flavors and the seasonings used in it. Would recommend Brine if you are in Newburyport!"
