A word from Brine
BRINE is the newest of Nancy Batista-Caswell’s inventive restaurant concepts. With BRINE, her hometown retains the buzz from two exciting eateries that she’s brought to New England through picturesque Newburyport.

BRINE’s sleek, stainless and Carrera marble bar, industrial lighting and ample galvanized furnishings make the fresh fish and butchered meats the stars of the show. Drop by to chose from a daily smorgasbord of Ceviche, Crudo — fresh Bivalves, Tartare, Sashimi, Carpaccio — Cotton, Brandade, and Espumas in addition to select prime cuts and butchered chops. Carpet Baggers, Daily Dock specials and Po’boys will round out a menu of Italian and Spanish influences.

Fans of our sister restaurant Ceia will find operational and culinary fluidity between these two hometown Caswell Restaurant Group establishments. Cheers!

Always exceptional service, very knowledgeable staff, food and presentation and timing of the food / apps is always perfect. Waters were refilled so many times (that is usually my pet peeve when water is not refilled!) Just A+ all around, love this place, will definitely be back, and recommending to everyone.... FAVORITE restaurant in Newburyport. My other half agrees."

  • "What an unexpected find in a little brick-lined pocket in Newburyport--delicious fresh oysters, raw fish entrees, exceptionally inventive small plates (bacon, eggs and fried oysters with spicy chile sauce or green and white asparagus salad with tiny quiche slices), and superb main courses (perfectly cooked fish, filet mignon, and a personal favorite,duck breast with sausages). Don't miss the cocktails--especially the beet-infused vodka "Up Beat", though there is also an extensive list of hand-crafted beers and an unusual selection of fine imported wines. In a word, fantastic--we returned 5 times and took everyone we knew during our brief visit to the town and we were never disappointed."

  • "A great relaxed lunch venue...there was a good variety of oysters and four different sauces as accompaniments; the rest of the menu is innovative and my tuna tartine was a great choice. Some nice wine choices as well. The service was very attentive and it was not a problem when we moved inside because of the sun. Highly recommended."

We were celebrating our anniversary and Briana (owner/ manager) made it memorable with her friendly manner and 2 complimentary glasses of champaign. Add to that a notable wine list and the result was a superb evening!"

It's a tight space and a bit loud, but a vibrant atmosphere. We asked for a good table in our reservation because of the occasion, and the hostess obliged with a romantic window seat.   • "We've eaten at Brine a couple of times, once last summer, and again last night. The meal was mostly terrific but was marred by the deserts. We started with oysters and the grilled octopus, they had a wonderful selection of Massachusetts oysters, all of which were wonderful. The octopus was also excellent. For our main courses we had the monkfish and the duck, both of which were brilliant. Now for the bad news, the desserts were awful. I had the souffle Grand Marnier, it was practically inedible because they topped it with an incredibly salty raspberry sauce. My wife had a frozen yogurt mousse which wasn't terrible like the souffle but it also wasn't very good. We had the same reaction last year, we loved everything except the desserts."

  • "This was our second visit to Brine and we were just as pleased as the first time. The service is great and everyone is both friendly and helpful. My daughter and I shared a selection of oysters which were delicious. For lunch I ordered the Oyster Po Boy which is excellent and flavorful but really needs a few more oysters in the sandwich. My daughter had the Shrimp BLT wrap which was packed with shrimp and flavor! She really loved the combination of flavors and the seasonings used in it. Would recommend Brine if you are in Newburyport!"

  • "cute place with marble top butcher style tables. was there for lunch, very limited options if you don't like raw or fried seafood-- love seafood, just not raw but my husband loves raw. excellent local beers, hard cider. Cold pea soup was exceptional. Muscles were the only cooked option that were not fried. While the preparation itself was fine,though very small portion, the muscles were large and very strong tasting-- so much so my mom was worried they were bad-- not the nice, sweet local muscles-- which is the reason I like muscles. It was like eating dark fish, kind of gamey. Neither my mom nor I could eat them. my daughters salad had a lovely description but was only lettuce, cheese and literally the dust of nuts. We left hungry."

  • "I've been to Brine twice now and both times enjoyed great food and cocktails. I highly recommend checking out their take on Bacon & Eggs as an appetizer, which includes perfectly fried oysters. What a creative combination of flavors and textures! The scallops came highly recommended by our server and did not disappoint. What a great entree! Everyone at our table was happy with the quality and creativity of all the food. The seafood is off-the-boat fresh and the pork and beef selections are just as fantastic. There are some great cocktails too... Like tequila? I highly recommend the Rusted Root then. You will not be disappointed! I will be back very, very soon!"

  • "The menu is not large but most of what we tried was very good. They would have gotten an excellent rating except for a couple items that arrived at a temperature that wasn't quite right. The server was very personable but the service was inconsistent. Oysters ordered with drinks arrived with the appetizers. Then it was 45 to 60 before our dinners arrived, and this was later in the evening, after the dinner rush. Our server came by a couple times asking if we wanted more drinks, then disappeared for a long period while we wondered when our dinners would arrive. Lastly, although the meal was very good, you are paying for every bit of it. Except for the small plate, prices seemed high for the portion size. "

  • "My husband and I had been to Brine before and always thought it was awesome BUT this meal was outstanding! Fresh Belon wild oysters from Maine (had dinner, dessert and more oysters at the end so we could eat even more of the Belons!) along with a great local oyster list started the meal. Next tapas in the form of a Scottish salmon with a delicate cucumber sauce and incredible beef tartare in lettuce cups. Dinner was fresh caught grouper for my husband and swordfish steaks (at a fantastic price) for me. Everything was incredibly fresh and the subtle flavors made us want to keep ordering all night! "

  • "Nice décor, small restaurant with intimate atmosphere. Servers were excellent, knowledgeable and attentive. Unfortunately the food was just ok, very small portions and not enough sides on the plate to make up for the small amount of main dish. My husband had the scallops. They were ok but only 3 on the plate. I had the swordfish, slightly overcooked, 2 small pieces, a small amount (1/4 cup maybe) of spinach and a few pieces of swiss chard stems (I think?) Desserts were not good either. Caramel soufflé tasted like an omelet, Chocolate mouse looked like a cookie and was frozen solid. Way too expensive for what it was. We went across the street for nachos after dinner...we won't be back."

  • "This was my second trip to Brine. Food was really great and our server was excellent. For my next trip to Brine, I think I will suggest that our party just order a bunch of the small plates as they were amazing. (Not that the entrees weren't also great.) Baby octopus was particularly delicious as was the brown buttered cauliflower salad. My only complaint was that the noise level was exceptionally loud and it was difficult to carry on a conversation. The poor acoustics and the annoying "house music" in the background was distracting."

  • "Brine fills a need for an excellent seafood place in Newburyport. Too many restaurants in town think they're in Thailand or Tuscany, not a seaside town. A beautiful small space, with brick walls and a small bar. It was very busy, but the service was top notch. Nice selection of oysters, presented beautifully. They pay attention to their "small plates" menu, which suits my wife and me. They had just released their spring menu. We could taste the ingredients! Steak tartare in lettuce cups was our favorite. Brine also has a "from the butcher" section, and while we didn't have anything from that menu, we saw several attractive dishes walking by. This chef clearly cars about freshness and simplicity."

  • "Our evening at the restaurant started off with an almost 1 hour wait for our 7:30 reservation, which then turned into another 45 minute wait for our salad once we were seated. The lobster newburg had great flavor, it just lacked enough of the main ingredient "lobster" I had two very small pieces in my serving. The restaurant is very small, with barely enough room to move around, the table we were seated in would be amazing during the warmer months, but a table next to the front door when it is opening and closing all the time was freezing. All in all, it was an experience that we will not subject ourselves to again."
