A word from Brine
BRINE is the newest of Nancy Batista-Caswell’s inventive restaurant concepts. With BRINE, her hometown retains the buzz from two exciting eateries that she’s brought to New England through picturesque Newburyport.

BRINE’s sleek, stainless and Carrera marble bar, industrial lighting and ample galvanized furnishings make the fresh fish and butchered meats the stars of the show. Drop by to chose from a daily smorgasbord of Ceviche, Crudo — fresh Bivalves, Tartare, Sashimi, Carpaccio — Cotton, Brandade, and Espumas in addition to select prime cuts and butchered chops. Carpet Baggers, Daily Dock specials and Po’boys will round out a menu of Italian and Spanish influences.

Fans of our sister restaurant Ceia will find operational and culinary fluidity between these two hometown Caswell Restaurant Group establishments. Cheers!

  • "This was my second trip to Brine. Food was really great and our server was excellent. For my next trip to Brine, I think I will suggest that our party just order a bunch of the small plates as they were amazing. (Not that the entrees weren't also great.) Baby octopus was particularly delicious as was the brown buttered cauliflower salad. My only complaint was that the noise level was exceptionally loud and it was difficult to carry on a conversation. The poor acoustics and the annoying "house music" in the background was distracting."

  • "Brine fills a need for an excellent seafood place in Newburyport. Too many restaurants in town think they're in Thailand or Tuscany, not a seaside town. A beautiful small space, with brick walls and a small bar. It was very busy, but the service was top notch. Nice selection of oysters, presented beautifully. They pay attention to their "small plates" menu, which suits my wife and me. They had just released their spring menu. We could taste the ingredients! Steak tartare in lettuce cups was our favorite. Brine also has a "from the butcher" section, and while we didn't have anything from that menu, we saw several attractive dishes walking by. This chef clearly cars about freshness and simplicity."

  • "the best chowder we've ever had but the overall atmosphere is too ramped up and so the dining experience is not relaxing. The music is too loud and the high top tables are pretty uncomfortable. That said, there appeared to be others who were having a good time. Just not us."

  • "We always come to celebrate at Brine- birthdays, anniversaries, and more.... Not only is the food exceptional, but the whole team is fantastic and knows to make everything fun and special!"

  • "Went for Valentine's Day, it was amazing. Food was perfect, presentation was amazing. Wine was SO good! I am definitely going back soon. Service was also very friendly, and helpful."

  • "Our evening at the restaurant started off with an almost 1 hour wait for our 7:30 reservation, which then turned into another 45 minute wait for our salad once we were seated. The lobster newburg had great flavor, it just lacked enough of the main ingredient "lobster" I had two very small pieces in my serving. The restaurant is very small, with barely enough room to move around, the table we were seated in would be amazing during the warmer months, but a table next to the front door when it is opening and closing all the time was freezing. All in all, it was an experience that we will not subject ourselves to again."

  • "Still remains my favorite. It's simply outstanding. The feel, the vibe, the food, the staff. Worth the drive outside of city. The owner does such a great job. She's kind and always present when we have dined."

  • "My wife and her friend left the choice of a restaurant up to me. We were visiting from central MA, in Newburyport to attend a concert/dance at Belleville Church Hall. We arrived early for an early reservation. It was bitterly cold outside and we were finished with strolling. They were happy to accommodate us and allowed us to pick a table. Our waitress was engaging and attentive. Two of us relished the oysters. I really enjoyed the lobster soup, which was broth like and probably not for everyone, but was for me. I thought my salmon with mussels was wonderful. My wife raved about her braised cauliflower salad, but only found the scallops good, not great. Her friend had a salad and a beef dish that she rated very good. I hope to return."

  • "This is a small venue with a dozen or so tables in an old brick building in downtown Newburyport. The ambience is very nice and the food was excellent and creative. They specialize in raw oysters, which neither my wife nor I enjoy, but the menu was diverse and both our entrees and appetizers were excellent. The noise level is a little high and the table spacing a little tight to describe it as romantic, but it is a very nice restaurant at which a couple can enjoy dinner together."

  • "Loved the location, but it is important to get a table at least a few feet from the door in cold weather."

  • "BRINE IS GREAT. We have had the pleasure of dining at fine restaurants all over the world. For example, In Paris our favorite for the past fourteen years is 3 star Michel Rostang. Five of us enjoyed a four hour lunch (NO kidding). The service was excellent. Never felt rushed. Food is eclectically GREAT. Not inexpensive but they offer very unusual FARE such as Kale Salad--delicious. Beef Tartar was wonderful. Filet steak was very good. Wine list well thought out. Dessert was WONDERFUL. Bryanna the manager is a very, very wonderful host and very attentive. Makes you feel special. Ian our server is outstanding. We like lunch there and try to get the window seat overlooking Newburyport's main street, State Street."

  • "Great place for oysters. They do them very well, no shell fragments. Four kinds to choose from. Excellent service. Background music (NOISE) A little too loud for a romantic ambiance. We actually would prefer no background "music" or as we call it NOISE. We like to hear each other talking. Food excellent and creative. Excellent Kale salad, very unique. They are flexible-- baked our fish instead of frying and another time provided a salad that we asked for that was not on the menu."

  • "First time, Sat afternoon. Small place. A bar, high tables one side and low tables the other. High tables and chairs not comfortable We had 3 doz mixed oysters. Very fresh & good. Presentation of the three sets varied. We had Bacon and Eggs (2) which were good yet, differing amount of bacon and fried oysters on each. One bacon strip was burnt. The Steak tartar was ok. Kate Salad very good. Deviled eggs were so, so, quality was fine, they simply fell flat, to bland. Drinks were fine. Special cocktails were not worth the extra couple of bucks BUT, the Bourbon and Ginger was good. The request for a mild Bloody Marry failed ... too spicy for my mom. All in all, I would go back maybe one more time. I recommend you try it once"

  • "My wife and I live in New Hampshire and were craving Brine for a while... (Had been there several times over the summer) Saturday night did not disappoint. Our table was perfect...every course of food was literally better than the next. We are in the restaurant business and are very hard to please....but I have to say we were thrilled. The staff at Brine was absolutely spot on. From the 4 delicious crudo to the monkfish and the prime ribeye...everything was honestly flawless. Our server was tremendous. Knowledgable, comfortable and prompt. We love Brine. Can't wait to come back!"

  • "A delicious meal, but quite noisy. We were only two people and could hear each other, but it would be more difficult with four, especially if one is of a certain age."

  • "Only a small storefront on State st in Newburyport, but tucked inside is great neighborhood find with big city flavor. Lobster newburg was excellent with fresh lobster. May had the sirlon which was grilled perfectly to her request. Wine choice was excellent and service was great. Highly recommend Brine for you next dinner on the North Shore."

  • "we have been to brine several times now. each time it seems to get better and better. The food and staff is spectacular. It may very well be the best restaurant in the boston scene. if you haven't checked it out you should."

  • "Very happy to have found Brine. Delicious and unusual dishes, numerous raw and cooked seafood choices, as well as butcher shop options. The "Crudo" raw seafood options amazing and unique, delicious and boutique wine list."

  • "We love Brine...the food and wine are outstanding. However, if you are dining with more than one person, it is VERY difficult to hear anything without shouting, I would recommend going very early or late to avoid the din. It could be very romantic with better acoustics."

  • "Dinner at Brine was great! Between us we got the 4 appetizers and entrees and 2 deserts. The kale salad, tuna crudo, fried oysters and mussels were excellent! 2 of us had scallops, 1 had a special and 1 had the 8 oz filet. I thought the filet seemed a bit small but the other dishes were all moderate in size. Everyone finished their meals - always a good sign! Except I had a few bites left because the scallop dish started to get a bit too sweet for me after a while. Desert was very good and suitable for sharing. My only real complaint was how tight the seating was. If you were sitting on the inside against the wall the person next to you had to get up and move their chair in order for you to get out."

  • "We tried Brine for the first time last night and we were very pleased. There is nothing innovative about the menu but everything was delicious. We went for the oysters and they didn't disappoint, they had four varieties and they were all excellent. We had the scallops and the sirloin steak as our main courses. The scallops were delicious however it was the steak that stood out. I can't recall a better piece of meat, it was perfectly seared on the outside and a beautiful red on the inside but you should expect that from any competent restaurant. It was the flavour and texture that stood out, it practically melted in my mouth."

  • "***CELIAC FRIENDLY*** We heard many great things about Brine; our first time there was the day before Christmas Eve (a Monday, to boot). So, our expectations of service/food prep were low. How wrong were we! Our hostess was prompt and welcoming, and made us feel comfortable while we waited for our server. The server, who greeted us quickly, was very friendly, extremely knowledgable about the menu and wine offerings, and helpful with pairings. She knew exactly what was gluten-free and what the kitchen could do to accommodate other dishes. The meal was superb! Steak phenomenal, oysters day-boat fresh, and other seafood wonderfully prepared. Some imaginative menu items as well. Our new favorite in Newburyport (perhaps all of New England)"

  • "Our server was very friendly and enthusiastic, which is always a good thing. We opted for the evening's special cocktail which was very festive and we sampled many varieties of the oyster offerings for the night, we were a party of 4 so we did 4 of each offering and made tasting notes so fun. We also tried the special wine offerings ,and may I say they were delicious. We all ordered small plates to start I especially enjoyed the scallops crudo. Delish! Entree's were excellent.Dessert did not disappoint I had heard many good things about Brine and I am happy to say it did not disappoint. We are serious about dining when we go out , I am pleased to report Brine was up to the task in everyway . We will be back!"

  • "We booked Brine for the first time when Newburyport had its Christmas Invitation Shopping Evening. We arrived at 6pm and the restaurant was already busy and had a nice buzz to it. Brick walls and beams and nice character added to the ambience. This is a fairly small space though and can fill up quickly. Our server was very efficient and friendly and we didn't have to wait long for the food. The Lobster Bisque was tasty although no pieces of lobster in it and served in a cool bowl. My husband had the Monkfish which was delicious and I had the Lobster Newberg -not a big portion but delicate and tasty with house made pasta. We shared a Caramel Souffle for dessert -also delicious. In all we had a lovely evening and would go back again."

  • "Cannot say enough about the experience of Brine. The food is world-class - this place would fit right in with the finest hot spots in manhattan. Service is great, mood is cozy and inviting and the food is off the charts."

  • "Superb oyster bar. Great ambience in a wonderful town setting. The food is impeccable. Service is solid and friendly but, at times, a little rough around the edges. Only downside is that they are definitely, at this point, over-priced. That is just the truth. An excellent restaurant in an excellent town with a lively, cozy atmosphere and fine, fresh, fresh food."
