A word from Brigantine La Mesa
A San Diego tradition since 1969, the Brigantine has received many accolades in our 40+ year history: "BEST SEAFOOD", "BEST CASUAL SEAFOOD", "BEST HAPPY HOUR", and even "BEST SWORDFISH IN THE WORLD", according to USA Today - just to name a few.

Well-known for our signature Clam Chowder, Grilled Swordfish, and Crème Brûlée, the Brigantine is a favorite among locals for consistently fresh seafood, succulent steaks and grilled meats.

With an updated nautical decor, the busy Oyster bar is hands-down the local favorite. Lush flowering foliage outdoors creates an elegant dining experience on one of two charming patios.

The La Mesa Brigantine serves dinner 7 nights a week, lunch Monday-Saturday, and brunch every Sunday.

Diner Reviews
  • "Our server, Miles, was amazing! His recommendations for wine as well as our meals were spot on and he was so personable and service oriented. He is one of the best servers we have ever had anywhere! We will be back!!"

  • "We eat at the Brigantine often, but mostly in the bar. This evening we ate in the restaurant -party of 6. I had a lemon drop from the bar... It had no alcohol in it. Don't waste your money. Our service was SLOW. Appetizers and salads came out at a reasonable pace but it took forever for the main course. I had the macadamia crusted Alaskan halibut at a cost of $33. My piece of fish was so small and barley had any 'crust' on it. The green beans were badly undercooked and were difficult to cut with a dinner knife! There are so many more wonderful restaurants that serve great fish with better quality and less cost here in San Diego. Stick with the fish tacos in the bar at the Brigantine."

  • "The Brig is the best restaurant choice in East County for continental (especially fish) cuisine."

  • "The whole meal was excellent, particularly the mahi which was a lovely thick moist fillet with just the right crunch to the coating. The blue cheese bacon potato salad was exceptional as well. Terrific service."

  • "I almost always order seafood here. It can't be beat. Love the swordfish and macadamia crusted halibut (especially when it is the wild Alaskan). Sides and salads are always great too. Never disappointed."

  • "My wife and I had our first date at the Brigentine and go back every year. That's the only reason I will go. Food is soso..Items we ordered weren't put in so we cancelled, Overall very dark .. Staff was friendly"

  • "There were 6 in my party. Everyone ordered something different and each commented on how good their specific meal was. The service was very good. A good time was had by all"

  • "Great spot for dinner. Nice atmosphere. Excellent food. Good Service. Would definitely come back and recommend to others. Maybe a tad pricey for some just out for a casual dinner. Might consider it more of a special occasion location."

  • "My wife and I go to this brig location, often and the food is always so good. This had to be the most disappointing experience I have had at this restaurant. My wife's halibut was under cooked and served with no sauce. While my sea bass, which I looked forward to because it was sour dough crusted, was way overdone and also served dry. The wait staff was inattentive to the point that we had to push our empty drink glasses to the edge of the table to get noticed. Again, this is not common for this restaurant, but when you pay 80 dollars for a meal, you expect it to be consistent. This makes me second guess why I go here, when I could go to other restaurants that are consistent and have great wait staffs."

  • "The Brigantine is our favorite lunch restaurant. The fish is always grilled to perfection and the sides are delicious. I love that they almost always have Risotto on the menu, as not many restaurants seems to serve this side dish, and it's a favorite of mine. Lunch is a bit pricy (but worth it for the quality food); however, we still try to go to the Brig at least once or twice a week regardless."

  • "I have met clients here a few times for a business dinner and always very nice. I ask for a quiet booth and have gotten great service and food."

  • "Great food. I ordered the pecan crusted mahi...I asked for it to be lightly crusted, which it was perfectly done. The traditional calamari is lightly battered and delish. Tom, our waiter, was fantastic. Very nice, in a good mood, and back to check on us just the right amount of times. I've been going here for about fifteen years, but it's improved the last few times I've gone. Glad to come back."

  • "This traditional gathering for a group of four friends was a big success thanks in large part to the Brig. Food (particularly seafood) was well prepared and delicious. Large booth was comfortable; lighting pleasant. It's wonderful to have such a reliably good restaurant in La Mesa, where the choices have always been limited. But in my experience this is the best of the Brigantines, anywhere in San Diego, particularly when it comes to the food and atmosphere. A special nod to our busser Jorge (George), a delightful person with a sweet smile who did his job well and helped us out by taking photos. (Our waiter was apparently new and not as personable or skillful one usually finds at the Brig, but maybe he just needs a little time.)"

  • "When we arrived we were told there would be a few minutes wait. That was o.k. Others came in and were meeting groups and were seated immediately. Then a couple walked in and said they had reservations and they were told "we can see you now". Excuse me, but we have been sitting here waiting!!!! I walked up to the front counter (where FIVE young ladies stood behind it!!!!) and said: We, too, have reservations!!!!! Oh, we can seat you now. Let me tell you -- there were no shortage of tables that I could see. Would I go back there. Probably not if I have a choice. The one in Point Loma is far better. The food was definitely very good."

  • "We celebrated our 30th anniversary at the "Brig" in La Mesa, had great service, great food, and creme brulee for desert. The stuffed salmon was moist and delicious. My husband's end cut of the prime rib was so tender, it cut with a fork. Our server could not have been more gracious or attentive. The wine list was ample and a great selection to choose from."

  • "Our family gathering was off to a disappointing start after waiting almost 15 minutes to place our cocktail and appetizer order. After the order was placed, one soft drink was delivered; finally the wine was presented and after reminding the server a previously ordered beer was served. Service improved and the dinner was excellent. The manager came to the table, introduced herself and apologized for the bad beginning. When the check was presented it included a 10% discount and I thanked the hostess and manager as we left and assured them the Brigantine was still our favorite and we would return again and again."

  • "Me and my boyfriend ordered a medium new york strip steak and a seafood platter. My steak was cooked perfectly and the sides of veggies and fries were great. The food was excellent and the server and their helpers were very friendly. Our waters were always filled without needing to ask. The restaurant had a good dining setting which made it a great dining experience."

  • "Brigantine is a go-to restaurant in East County with good service and always very good food. The swordfish is better than anywhere else and the hand-shaken margaritas are the best! The Sunset specials are a bargain for a delicious three-course offering."

  • "FINE RESTAURANTS DO NOT HAVE TO NICKEL & DIME THEIR PATRONS WITH EXTRA CHARGE FOR DINNER SALADS.. MY PERSONAL OPINION IS THAT IT DEGRADES THE DINING EXPERIENCE. I LIKE TO KNOW EXACTLY HOW MUCH MY FULL DINNER IS GOING TO COST UP FRONT. NO ONE EVEN TELLS YOU THAT YOU WILL BE CHARGED EXTRA FOR YOUR SALADS. THIS POLICY RUINED OUR DINING EXPERIENCE & WHEN I REFERENCE YOUR RESTAURANT TO FRIENDS, I WILL ALWAYS LET THEM KNOW HOW SNEAKY YOUR ARE ABOUT MENU PRICING & WHAT YOU PRICING ENTAILS, YOU HAVE A FINE RESTAURANT & GOOD SERVICE, WHY CHEAPEN YOURSELF WITH THE NICKEL & DIME THING. THE PUBLIC DOES NOT LIKE SURPRISES. I PERSONALLY WILL NOT COME BACK AGAIN UNTIL YOUR POLICY CHANGES. NOR WILL I RECOMMEND YOU TO FRIENDS."

  • "We had lunch at the Brigantine to celebrate Valentine's Day 2 days early as we knew how crowded it would be on that day. The food is always well prepared and well presented. I had sourdough sea bass with a lemon sauce and it was delicious. It was on a bed of rice and with a side of veggies that looked like they came straight out of a garden. My husband had fried seafood as his main dish with 2 sides - I do not eat fried food so it didn't look appealing to me. However, he loved it! A dessert of creme brelle is to die for. The servers are always very friendly and helpful."

  • "Even though our experience was great, we found out that if there are no places to fit our initial request YOU automatically select whatever is available. We were told that we could either wait for inside or, sit out on the patio. We went ahead and sat on the patio but, in the future I think you should let people know that they may be asked to sit outside as their request was not able to be accommodated as requested. Thank you"

  • "My parents, my two kids, my husband and I really enjoyed our dinner! The kid's menu was a good variety--and they were willing to serve to my picky kid's taste with no problem! The adults enjoyed appetizers (calamari is always delicious) and the drinks were perfect! My crab stuffed shrimp wrapped in bacon was delicious, rich, and filling--even though there were only four--it was plenty! The blue cheese potato salad is a must-choose side dish! Our server was great--I wish I could remember her name! Slightly older than the other servers, she was just super sweet and made sure I was taken care of as the birthday girl! THANKS!"
