Chef Owner Stephan Mayeux (a native Parisian) and his wife Christine invite you to enjoy their own brand of Country French Cuisine in the welcoming comfort of their 1890s home. Embracing the philosophy of "Wines for the table, not for the cellar" the Bridge Street Bistrot wine list features reasonably priced, young, drinkable table wines from around the world, with over 20 wines by the glass priced $7.00 or less. A full bar and bottled beer are also available.

  • "We spent 4 days and nights in Portsmouth and found this gem on our last evening - I wish it had been our first restaurant because we wouldn't have needed to go anywhere else (and by comparison with our other three dinners at the city's highest rated restaurants, this Bistrot blew them all away...) Everything was perfect but we especially loved the Shrimp and Bacon Wine Bar Hors d'oeuvre (and the ability to sample a flight of wines before our reservation), the original appetizer Escargot preparation, the Veal Chop entree and the Creme Brulee and Profiterole were to die for. The service was the most efficient, friendly and professional we really have ever experienced. This restaurant will make Portsmouth a must revisit destination for us!"

  • "The inside of this restaurant was charming but it appeared to only be open for our reservation. While the atmosphere was warm, chic and elegant the food was sub-par at best. The appetizer was swimming in oil and our entrees felt like something I could recreate at home but with more pizazz and flavor. We decided not to stay for dessert. I don't think I will go back despite the feeling that it could be a great place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine. Too expensive for what you get...or don't get. "

  • "I took my mother there for mother's day and after reading the reviews we were both excited to try it. The room is lovely, the service was pleasant, the bread is wonderful and my appetizer crepe was quite good. Unfortunately the rest of the meal was surprising bland. We both found our main courses rather tasteless, which was a big disappointment given the descriptions. I had Chicken & Lobster Mirabelle, and while everything was nicely cooked, none of it had any flavor. The herbed potato pie that came with it looked nice but was quite dry. Everything on the menu sounded amazing and should have been. I really wanted to love this place but based on the food alone, I am not likely to return."

  • "We were visiting Portsmouth and based on the generally favorable reviews on Yelp, we decided to eat here. We had a warm reception and were given a great seat upstairs at a window. As it was Friday night, the place was not as busy as we would have expected it to be, maybe 505 occupied. Other places near by were packed. If anything explains this, I would say that, for the price, the food is only mediocre. The chicken that I had was not terrible but nothing to write home about. Very bland and was somewhat tough. I probably could have done better by getting something from Trader Joes. Definitely not worth the price. My wive had a similar experience with her pork. Service was very good, but were let down by the kitchen. "

  • "We were looking for a French restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary to relive some of the great meals we experienced in Burgundy on our honeymoon. Bridge Street Bistrot did not disappoint. If you're looking for traditional French bistro fare, but prepared with lighter ingredients, then this is the place for you. The only fault that we found was the baguette, which may have been purchased at the local grocery store and reheated. Bread is an art form in France and one would expect more from a chef who puts so much care into the rest of the menu. If you're yearning for a great French meal and can't afford the flight to Paris or Lyon, then make the drive to Portsmouth..."

  • "If you are looking for EXCELLENT traditional French cuisine this is the place to go. The appetizers were incredible and the Baked Brie was the absolute best I have EVER had and the mushroom crepe was uber yummy. For the main course, from the Chicken Francaise to the Coq au Vin it was a taste treat. We were a party of 4 and every dish was a delight. My daughter had the Grilled beef Tenderloin. While not a strictly "French" dish the beef was fork tender and the seasoning and potato side was really something extraordinary. The bread was phenomenal and the desserts were spectacular. One drawback is that its a small venue so I STRONGLY advise making reservations."

  • "Enjoyed another lovely meal served by friendly professionals. I've already submitted a detailed review in Trip Advisor. I was anxious that the meal might not be as good as the one we had just the week before, but it was very good. My husband and I both had the monkfish special. We found the lobster sauce thin and bit bland, unfortunately. A shame, because the Israeli couscous, shrimp and fish deserved a substantive sauce to take it from good to memorable. Everything else was as good or better than the last time. The potato cakes (this time) are an example of improved attention to detail that left a very favorable impression. Daughter loved her coq au vin. Clafouti and café, YUM! Mais, peut-etre authentic baguette, s'il vous plait? :) "

  • "We are local and thus have enjoyed the gamut of the truly exceptional restaurants of Portsmouth. Bridge Street Bistrot in many other towns would stand out as a gem, but here in Portsmouth it could use a tiny bit more polish to really shine. Don't get me wrong, the owners, servers, and ambience are all fantastic, and the food is excellent - it just (for us) did not fully meet the expectations of "french" high cuisine (even as a bistrot) and partially due to the caliber of neighboring restaurants in town. That said, the desserts are to die for! The creme brûlée is always my go-to item and I was in heaven with this one."

  • "We were so happy to have discovered the Bridge St. Bistro. It's only a block off the square but easy to overlook if you fixate on the square. The food was outstanding - I had grilled beef tenderloin with mushrooms and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. The vegetables and potato dish that it was served with completed the plate for a perfect meal. My husband was equally satisfied with his filet au poivre. The interior is very pleasant and comfortable. While we are certainly not old, we appreciated the relatively quiet atmosphere in the restaurant - it makes for more romantic, peaceful dining. We will definitely return."

  • "This was our second dinner at this restaurant since moving to the area in January. Both experiences were very nice. We got great attention, and noticed that they paid attention to the note I wrote in "Open Table" when I made our reservation. The malbec wine recommended by the waitress was so smooth-good choice. Our spinach salads were tasty with the bacon on them, a real treat as we hardly ever eat bacon. My husband especially enjoyed his dinner of duck and I always choose a seafood dinner. My dinner was also delicious. We split flourless cake for dessert and the waitress presented it to us with a candle to celebrate our anniversary. We will definitely return."

  • "We ate at Bridge St Bistro for the 2nd time this week. The food is outstanding, prepared with care. From the soups to the fish entrees that we've tried, we would recommend all. Service is attentive and knowledgeable. This has become our go to place when we visit the Portsmith area. Seating - we've eaten in the first floor bar. It's a wonderful space, and doesn't get noisy even when folks just stop by for a drink."

  • "The atmosphere is cozy and personal. This is not a formal French restaurant. The food is outstanding and very resonable. I had the Chicken Francais and Mushroom Crepe appetizer and both were fantastic. Even the my simple salad was perfect. I did not have dessert but heard positive remarks from the whole table. We had a large group, which they handled well but I would take a smaller group for the best experience. We ate late and closed the place. The owners and wait staff were gracious and friendly. Really great meal."

  • "It starts with world-class, friendly service that leads you to your seat in a warm, comfortable, non-pretentious dining room filled with Eiffel towers and one of the nicest views of Portsmouth. The wine list is extravagant, the menu is full of amazing items - many are staple items found on any French restaurant's menu - but the taste, presentation, and ingredients are unique to Stephan and his kitchen. Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. Try the Steak au Poivre with a glass of Merlot!"

  • "My husband and I had a "spectacular" (his word) dinner last night at this intimate wine bar/restaurant. From the tomato/basil bisque to the seafood entrees, we were delighted with tastes and presentations. My seafood dish, with shrimp, scallops, mussels, and salmon, lost none of the individual taste of each fish. Also noteworthy were the vegetables; perfectly cooked and presented. We will make this a must stop on our trips to Portsmith."

  • "Bridge Street's menu hasn't changed much over the years (although they always have specials), but that's the point. Their French country food is always first rate although not inexpensive. Bottom line is my wife and I go there half a dozen times a year and have been for 15 years. Always an excellent meal in an inviting, unhurried setting."
