Brennan's of HoustonStill the bestBrennan's of Houston remains one of the finest restaurants in the area, mixing the best of Louisiana cuisine and fresh Texas Gulf Coast seafood. The decor is classy but not pretentious and the outdoor courtyard is lovely. (It began raining on us when we were seated outside, but the staff acted quickly to give us a nice table with courtyard views.) A favorite starter is the Soup 1-1-1 featuring Brennan's classic turtle soup (say yes to the sherry), superb gumbo, and the daily feature. While I have always been impressed with Brennan's of Houston, I can't give the same high marks to Brennan's of New Orleans. The results were outstanding. As good a dessert menu as I can remember. And the service was ideal (unlike the New Orleans Brennan's where the lead waiters have decided the restaurant is about them and not the patrons). There is noting like their brunch with the turtle soup! The only flaw in an otherwise fantastic Mother's Day brunch (a day early) was that we were seated in the banquet room upstairs rather than in the dining room. The room is nice, and I hosted an event in the next room recently, but it is not the same as being in the main dining room. We were disappointed when the large empty room began to fill with groups that were either underdressed or had many children. Otherwise, we enjoyed the food and the service. This time the food was very good but not outstanding. The service was impeccable. For men they prefer jackets, and from my perspective it's worth dressing up -- somehow it just adds to the overall experience (unless it's a humid day in the middle of summer). This was the second year in a row that we selected Brennan's for our outing and it was a pleasure. Friends joined us and I had asked for a quieter spot due to my boyfriend's hearing impairment. Our table was in one of the upstairs dining room and it really did help my mate to hear the conversation. I love the fact that Brennan's doesn't fool around with brunch classics and does it so perfectly. The ambiance is luxurious and the service is exceptional. Most ordered the filet (one of the specials), and though mine arrived medium well as opposed to the medium rare I ordered, replacement was brought so swiftly, I hardly noticed. It was exceptional! Had a side of the goat cheese grits, and can't recommend them; very dry and lacked flavor. More salt and cream would do wonders. The crab that came with the filets was succulent. Mine was flawless, but my friend found a number of crab shell pieces in hers. I do not recommend the bread pudding, as It 's made like a flan and was much to floury. We were seated in the kitchen at the "kitchen table", and received exemplary service complete with wine-pairings. They created a custom menu for us, and the chef that prepared it brought each course and took care to describe it in detail to us.
