A word from Breakwater Restaurant & Bar
"Chic, sexy and glamorous", are words that have been used to describe the decor of this downtown Beaufort hotspot. If you are looking for where the locals eat, Breakwater is it. The atmosphere is upscale casual, the staff is friendly, welcoming and attentive.

Chef Lang and Chef Shaw's version of 'New Southern Cuisine' contains the past, present, and future all at once. Younger, lighter, and fresher than traditional Southern 'Old School' deep-fried fare while acknowledging culinary influences from the world beyond. Exceptional tapas menu, outstanding fresh local seafood and produce.
The bar at Breakwater exudes a lively energy with locals and travelers alike. Exceptional wine list with 75 wines by the glass.

Diner Reviews
  • "After viewing many reviews for eating spots in Beaufort SC, we selected Breakwater Restaurant - we were NOT disappointed. Our table was ready at the time of the reservations and our wait staff person was wonderful -friendly and knowledgable and attentive to our needs without being over bearing. The calamari was delicious (and we eat this at many places) - delicate crust and not a rubbery piece in the bunch - the sauce was delicate and not spicy. My hushband had the blackend mahi and I selected 2 tapa's dishes - crabcake and diver seared scallops; both were very well done The lemon risotto served with the scallops was delicious. It was a wonderful dining experience and if we come back to the area we would stop by again."

  • "We have been going to Breakwater for many years. The food is nice but the quality of service seems to be getting worse and worse. We went for New Year's Eve and the plates were cold and the waitress only seemed to care about getting rid of us as soon as possible. Last night again we had to wait 20 minutes upon arrival despite having made a reservation, then no one checked on us for the longest time and the wine we ordered never appeared. We certainly hope Breakewater returns to its old standards. In the mean time we will try other places"

  • "We have eaten at this restaurant on several occasions and have always had a wonderful evening. We were very impressed with all facets of our restaurant experience and consider it one of the premier restaurants in the Beaufort area."

  • "Seemed overly loud this visit. Service was slightly off from normal times. We had taken two couples as guests and it just may not be the restaurant to try to have 6 people enjoying a conversation."

  • "We were shown to a table at reservation time. Servers were attentive and very helpful about the menu. The food was great and variety of tap pas good. Great meal."

  • "Wonderful take on traditional Low Country foods as well as offering a nice variety of dishes for contemporary bon vivant. In other words, it is excellent here but would also be appreciated in New York, Chicago, or San Francisco. Service is cordial, welcoming, solicitous without hovering. Staff is knowledgeable about the dishes being offered and can describe them accurately. We have followed this chef since he first opened Breakwater in a little building on West Street. Long may he feed appreciative diners in Beaufort."

  • "We discovered Breakwater years ago traveling to and from Florida. Now we plan our travel so that we can be sure to enjoy a wonderful meal at Breakwater Restaurant. The creative cuisine with a sophisticated southern flair never disappoints. Large lump crabcakes are perfect. Vegetables prepared to perfection. Don't miss this terrific place."

  • "I had the pickled fried brussel sprouts and they were delicious, which was an appetizer. I then had a tapas (crab cake and salad) which was perfect for my smaller appetite. My husband's fish entree was also very good. We will try the one in Greenville next."

  • "We have been visiting Beaufort for many years, and have always enjoyed the outstanding dining scene. This was our first visit to Breakwater. We are in no way hesitant to rate this as the best in Beaufort. Wonderful menu, great food and outstanding service. We'll be back."

  • "Have been to Breakwater several times. Never disappointed. Menu is varied and innovative. Food is well prepared and nicely presented. Full bar and nice wine list. Had blackened mahi which was spicy and delicious. Waitress was attentive, but not overbearing. Restaurant can get a bit noisy, but did not experience that on this Wednesday evening."

  • "My favorite restaurant and it still holds true after all these years"

  • "I had the southern sampler as a main course and it was first-rate - the best calamari I've had in years, first-rate shrimp, along with fried oysters and a think slice of beef. (You get four choices out of about 8 items.) Definitely enough for a main course or sharing with up to about 4 people as an appetizer. My companion had the daily special, which was baked red snapper, also excellent, with a good variety of vegetables. Chocolate dessert was memorable and delicious. The wait staff was knowledgeable, courteous, and attentive."

  • "My wife and I had any enjoyable evening with excellent food and great service from Lisa. They have a good wine list with a wide range of prices. We now live in the area so we will definitely return. Appetizer, dinners and a moderate priced bottle of wine was $100 not including the tip."

  • "Chose Breakwater after reading a number of reviews. Very happy with my choice. Good vibes, nice upscale setting and very friendly. We were in town for the weekend to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. Friendly waitress greeted us with 'Best Wishes' for our anniversary and a couple of glasses of 'bubbly'. Nice touch! We stayed with appetizers and tapas; all of which were excellent in presentation and taste . A very pleasant experience and willingly recommend Breakwater to all."

  • "This was my second dining experience at Breakwater. Both being excellent from service to food! The calamari is the best I have ever had! Breakwater is worth every cent you pay for the quality of food received. The food was all AMAZING!! The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing with pleasant staff members from the moment you walk in the door. In addition the strawberry sangria was highly recommended also. Looking forward to returning and trying another Entrée."

  • "This is one of two places in Beaufort for a really nice dinner. They are always busy and the food is always great. The tapas menu is my favorite because I feel I never over eat and can enjoy myself. The service has never been bad. We have had a large group in the wine room and that was also fun."

  • "Breakwater has what I look for in a great restaurant: soothing atmosphere, exceptional food, service attentive but not overpowering, and good wine. There are many menu selections, so hard to chose which, I wanted them all. Each was reasonably priced and generous; each a gem of composition and taste. I enjoyed my kale and roasted butternut squash salad, and the lamb chops were delectable. My husband's Mahi had just the right blackening spice to still be able to taste the delicious fish flavor, something hard to achieve. The pecan tart with bourbon ice cream and caramel sauce was a huge success!!! We will definitely return many times, and would recommend it highly to anyone who enjoys a night out with great food, service, and atmosphere."

  • "This is our second trip back. Since it is an hour away from our home (where we have lots of good restaurants), it shows that we liked it the first time. We were not disappointed! Dinner was terrific with very attentive service and wonderful food. They really prepare the food in very tasty and unusual ways with lots of variety in flavor and texture. We will definitely make this trip again."

  • "I surprised my boyfriend with a night in Beaufort during the Film Festival. I wanted to surprise him with a night to remember! I looked at every single restaurant in Beaufort before making my decision. Breakwater seemed like the perfect place for him. It had so many options that I knew he would like. I emailed the owner Donna after I made the reservation on here and told her my story. I then asked her if she could make sure our waitress knew that everything was a surprise so she wouldn't ask us about the film festival and if she could bring their tuna tartar dish after our drink order to surprise him. Our waitress was absolutely phenomenal, Donna was wonderful and the entire experience was beyond perfect. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!!"

  • "We were in town with another couple for a weekend getaway. We had a 7:30 reservation and it took quite a while to get our food. Our server told us at one point the kitchen had gotten backed up and our food would be out soon. After that it took another 15 mintues for the food which in total was almost an hour for a table of 4. A manager never came by to check on us and nothing was offered to compensate for the long wait. The food itself was very good. We had a wide variety of dishes and they were all excellent."

  • "Breakwater Restaurant was a disappointment, especially after reading generally positive reviews. The food was mediocre at best, the soup not hot and had to be sent back, and the service was as annoying as I have had in a restaurant. "How is OUR food tonight? How are we enjoying our shrimp? Are we all finished here?". Patronizing, unprofessional, and lame. The food itself was only acceptable. The clam chowder was gluey and over-floured. The crab cake small and ordinary. The shrimp and grits were good, and the grilled carpaccio and marinated tuna tartar were edible but little more. Don't waste your money on this place."

  • "My wife and I love Breakwater. We tried the fried pickled brusel sprouts. and fought over the last one. Food was great, saw many local faces which was fun. The highlight of the night was our server Lindsay. She provided great humor and great service."

  • "This place has the best food in town if you don't mind paying $30 a plate. I brought my wife here for her birthday and she loved it! I rated ambiance lower because they seated us in the corner by the window where the smokers would empty their cigarette butts. Not a big deal for me but it was for my wife."

  • "My wife and I dine at Breakwater in Beaufort frequently. Each and every time our visit has resulted in a pleasureable and memorable experience. The menu is excellent and the service is nonpareil. Gary and Donna Lang and Beth Shaw are to be commended for their efforts and making Breakwater of Beaufort a destination when in town. Looking for an upscale dining experience, then this is the place."

  • "My husband order the pot roast while the meat was delicious he received 1 slice of carrot and 2 small pieces of potatoes along with it. It was listed as a complete meal which left a lot to be desired. He actually left hunger and we went elsewhere and ate later in the evening."

  • "Breakwater is THE place to celebrate the arrival of the New Year! It's where the movers and shakers of Beaufort meet, greet, and eat. Food, service and attention to detail are hallmarks of this eatery."

  • "We keep coming back to Breakwater for its excellent food, service and atmosphere. We think it is Consistenly the best restaurant in Beaufort for overall quality."

  • "Food and service were great. We started with the southern sampler appetizer to taste 4 choices. Tile fish and filet mignon were cooked perfectly. Save room for dessert! A bit more than we normally spend dining out but nice for a special occasion."

  • "This was my first time at Breakwater, we were visiting for the holiday and wanted a nice night out before our visit ended. We were not disappointed. The food was absolutely delectable. The lump crab cakes were succulent and were actually lump crab, not breading posed as crab. The southern fried boneless chicken was crispy and flavorful with moist white meat. The desserts were wonderful, it goes without saying. We enjoyed our servers friendly and available presence and the romantic ambience made the night perfect. Overall it was a really enjoyable experience."

  • "First time I noticed the loud music. would suggest turning down music volume or just turn off. Mash potatoes too heavy for us. should have requested a substitute. Excellent green veggies, good salmon, excellent fried shrimp and good selection of wine choices. Will certainly return."

  • "Food was excellent, service great. The only thing was, it was noisy. We also sat where you could look at the 4 pictures on the wall and did not think that the chicken in kitchen was something we wanted to look at during our visit."
