A word from Breakwater Restaurant & Bar
"Chic, sexy and glamorous", are words that have been used to describe the decor of this downtown Beaufort hotspot. If you are looking for where the locals eat, Breakwater is it. The atmosphere is upscale casual, the staff is friendly, welcoming and attentive.

Chef Lang and Chef Shaw's version of 'New Southern Cuisine' contains the past, present, and future all at once. Younger, lighter, and fresher than traditional Southern 'Old School' deep-fried fare while acknowledging culinary influences from the world beyond. Exceptional tapas menu, outstanding fresh local seafood and produce.
The bar at Breakwater exudes a lively energy with locals and travelers alike. Exceptional wine list with 75 wines by the glass.

  • Wonderful Dinner at Breakwater

Four of us had a terrific Tuesday night dinner experience. Breakwater has a spare, modern and slightly Asian atmosphere with low key wall colors, some modern art. There is plenty of room around tables. Overall, a very pleasant interior that is relaxing and not busy or distracting with stuff. The food was delicious. We had the low country sampler as an hors d'ourvre with fried shrimp, hummus, calamari, and pimento cheese dip. The portion was perfect for two people. Everything was tasty with just the right spice and delicious sauces. The hummus was made with butter beans and had a flavorful, nutty texture and taste. My scallops (I asked for them cooked through and they were perfect) on top of a squash risotto and green beans was mouthwatering good. Two people had the southern fried boneless chicken, which they declared delicious. I had two bites and relish it was. One person had the pan fried grouper over some slightly curried squash and red cabbage with brussell sprouts. She was in heaven. We had an excellent fruity Sauvion Vouvray off the very nice (but not overwhelming number) list of wines. Finally, our server was top notch. Very experienced and pleasant with a good sense of humor. Overall, we could not have asked for more. It was a great meal and experience from all angles.

We dined here Saturday evening for the first time. Thought the restaurant had great ambiance and it was very nice that the bar was totally separate from the main dining area. We arrived at 7:25 for our 7:30 reservation and we were told our table wasnt ready yet so we could go to the bar. The bartender wasnt very friendly but the drinks were very reasonable I cant remember the last time I had ketel vodka for under $6! Definitely a plus. We were sat about 7:50 perfect table tucked in a corner, it was half booth other half with a chair. They had bolster pillows available for booth side which I think was a great idea! Service was great even though our waitress had another large table adjacent to us. Our food was very good, I had steak special cooked perfectly, my husband had scallops he thought they were a little under cooked for his taste but defintely cooked through just his preference. We will defintely be back!

Our party of 4 had a great time at Breakwater starting with drinks at the bar followed by a delicious meal. Our server was informative and attentive but not intrusive. We had shared starters and then ordered our main courses. We rounded off with Creme Brûlée and coffee - delicious.

Last Friday a friend and I ate dinner at Breakwater grill in Beaufort. We started with a drink at the bar and were pleasantly surprised that it was still Happy Hour at 6:45. My dinner was perfect; grilled grouper, grits, and grilled brussel sprouts. Best meal I've had in Beaufort!

The diners in our party of 12 had a variety of dishes and everyone had high praise for the quality and preparation of the food. I had the Petite Tender (Teres Major) Medallions with Creamy Polenta. This plate of food was simply outstanding. I would recommend Breakwater to anyone looking for a fine dining menu with preparation by a chef that clearly knows his profession.

Tuna tartare was simple and delicious! Crispy Duck was great! The short rib was a very hearty portion. Great place for a variety of tapas and an extensive wine list. Server was SUPER nice, but only on her second day, she had not been fully trained. It was an enjoyable evening and I would recommend and return. Thank you!

We've been to Breakwater many times and have always had a great experience. However, we were recently disappointed as we found the service slow and less than attentive. Granted, it was extremely crowded but there was no excuse for such long gaps.

I had read other reviews so I thought we would try it. I found the decor to be rather cold and not very inviting but that's just my taste. It was a little loud because of the hard surface floors and it was full for a Tuesday night. The food was good but I guess my expectations where higher. It's only been a week since we dined there and I don't remember what I had. It wasn't bad it just wasn't that memorable. Maybe a different night and a different entrée. I would go back just to give it a second chance.

Read wonderful reviews on other web sites and all were accurate. Enjoyed salads, tapas as well as a meal. Seasonal salad and Diver Scallops are not to be missed. Varied wine list for every palate. Concluded with an after dinner drink in the bar where we listened to a very talented duo on horns strings. Would definitely go back on our next trip to Beaufort.

One of my favorite restaurants in Beaufort. Food is always above par and the staff is competent and friendly. Only problem is acostics, when there is a full house it is very difficult to hear the people you are dining with that evening. Other than that, I plan to go there frequently.

Had dinner here while on vacation in the area. There is a restaurant and separate bar area which also has tables for dining. Discovered happy hour drink specials were available when dining in the bar area, which was a plus. My husband had the Duroq pork chop and I had the shrimp pasta special. The pork chop was cooked very well - moist and juicy. The pasta was good as well. If we lived in the Beaufort area, we'd definitely be repeat customers.

The last few times I have dined at Breakwater the experience has been disappointing...which is unfortunate because I consider it one of Beaufort's best. This time I had a Caesar Salad, which was the best thing I had. The presentation and taste were very good. For dinner I had the Southern Sampler which was disappointing at best. The oysters were so small, you could hardly taste anything but all the overcooked spicy breading. The shrimp were also overcooked and tough. The calamari and carne cruda were simply, OK. My friend had the corn soup which was more like a vegetable soup with corn and I was told the meatballs at Olive Garden were better! To finish off the meal we shared the Apple Bread Pudding which was all dry bread, no flavor!

I surprised my husband taking him there for his 40th Birthday...just the two of us. Also this was the first time out together after the birth of our son in March. The waitress was awesome...walked right up and said "I hear there is a birthday!" And the surprise was unveiled. Perfect....He had a choice of a free dessert or drink. Food was just great and priced perfect. The seasonal salad.....outstanding. The Salmon Crustini was great! We are headed back there as soon as we can get a babysitter!

I hate to say it, but Breakwater was disappointing. It had been one of our favorites to come back to in Beaufort, but it was a clunker this time. Risotto had always been a highlight--undercooked and bland. The seasonal part of the menu wasn't inspiring at all--nothing grabbed anyone's attention in our party. Hate to say it, but it may be awhile before we come back.

Breakwater has become our favorite Beaufort restaurant. We've never had a disappointing meal or experience. My husband and I each selected one of the fresh fish specials and they were delicious. I especially loved the vegetable "succotash" that accompanied the tile fish. We arrived early and were both in the mood for marguerites. They were perfect, and we enjoyed some time at the bar chatting with Terry. We also enjoy and ask for Lisa as our server when possible. Thanks all for a terrific evening.

We decided to invite our neighborhood dine out group of 8 to dine at Breakwater on a Monday evening. We made a reservation and our table was waiting when we arrived. Our server was attentive and gave good suggestions. We enjoyed not only good food which was well presented and great service but we were able to also visit with one another throughout the meal as well as when we finished without the feeling of being rushed to give our table to someone else. In other words the food was served with enough time between courses that we didn't need to gulp it down quickly. All said we would definitely return again.
