Welcome to Breakwater Restaurant. Here, Chef Lang and Chef Shaw create their version of 'New Southern Cuisine' which contains elements of the past and the present.   • "The charcuterie plate was good. The braised short ribs and duck breast were very good, both very flavorful and excellently prepared. The duck was cooked exactly as I requested. Desert was pathetic. The pecan tart was served cold. There is no excuse to ending an otherwise very good meal with such little effort. The manager of this restaurant needs to tighten things up. Service was OK although a little amateurish, and the wine list could use some thought although we did enjoy an excellent Domaine Serene Pinot. Breakwater has too much local competition to be so lackadaisical."

  • "Had a nice evening at Breakwater with special friends. Server, Cameron, was very good and other attendants were extremely friendly and helpful even bringing extra muffins as we sat talking after dinner. Unfortunately, the food was just soso. We had been here before and really enjoyed it but both my husband and I were disaapointed with our meals. We had brought freinds who had never been before so we hope their meals were better. We will try again because of the nice service and ambience but the chef needs to step it up. The argula salad had little taste and the entrees were luke warm with little flavor. They looked good but just didn't have much taste."

  • "This is normally one of our favorite Greenville picks, but this time wasn't as nice - we were seated next to a cackling, loud woman, and then the special was sold out - at 8:00. It also seems the menu is getting not as varied, (while now Soby's menu is improving)."

  • "We had not planned on dining out before catching a show downtown. My wifes brother called Friday afternoon and told us he would be in town and could meet us. Reservations for 7:15 were pushing it for him from the airport. As we waited, the staff accomodated us with great energy. They held our tapas order until our guest arrived. Food was fantastic and they got us out in a hurry to make the show."

  • "Breakwater started out strong with interesting small plates, but newer menu options are standard and too similar to other restaurants. Soup was good, but served lukewarm, Bouillabaisse was worst I've ever eaten. Seafood was cooked first and placed in insipid broth. The fish was dry and the scallops small. Clams were good. The pecan tart tasted like it had been heated with an acetylene torch. It was burnt to the plate and tasted like chemicals. The kitchen needs some serious attention. The food was also served too fast."

But servicing a 7:30 PM Saturday night reservation on a timely basis should not be a challenge. Hoping this was just an off night. The food is very good so we put up with the noisiness - but slow service is not acceptable."

  • "I've been patronizing all of the restaurants around Greenville for years, but this is my first trip to Breakwater. First impression was that the wine list was above average for the price point. I was also happy to see that the menu options were perfectly sized which made our meal choices much easier. Most of all, my filet was perfectly seasoned. In many restaurants around the country, it seems the chef either under-seasons the steak or drowns the entree in unnecessary sauces thus robbing the diner of the filet quality. My steak was perfect. Also, the waiter was told of our time constraints due to a concert....he nailed it and we didn't feel rushed. We'll definitely be back."

  • "We went to breakwater for our anniversary. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure you are satisfied. Or waiter, Cameron, was affluently having a bad night and worked very hard to make it up to us, although we weren't upset at all. Buy the extra special treatment was very much appreciated."

  • "On the negative side: The room has brick walls and hardwood floors, so LOT'S of noise. I also didn't like how the two-tops were all lined up side by side, there was a couple sitting at the table next to us, and even though they seemed very nice they were too close to us for privacy and comfort. . Also, I didn't like having to pay $5 to park, there being no free spaces anywhere for blocks. On the positive side: The staff were all very friendly. The menu is diverse (available online). Most important the food was good. the entrees were well prepared, displayed, and tasty, as were the sides. Portion size was good. We had one glass of wine, no appetizers or dessert, no other beverages than water and the 2 dinners. total was $68."

In an effort to help out my boyfriend's wallet, I purchased a Living Social deal for my birthday dinner. The staff was very patient with us at first, particularly when we called to inform them that we were running late, having spent the day in Asheville. However, the moment there was mention of a Living Social deal, our server lost interest. I expect mediocre service at mediocre restaurants, but this meal was worthy of more attention, that we did not get. Had our server taken a moment to treat us like the rest of her clients, perhaps she would have known that I wanted a glass of wine with my $35 steak...on my birthday."

  • "We eat at this restaurant pretty often and usually enjoy it. This past Saturday night however we made a reservation at 8:15 and was sat right away. That was the last thing about that evening that happened quickly. We waited around 10 minutes for a glass of wine. Another 30 minutes to get our salads and 1.5 hours to finally be served our meal. I ordered the vegetable plate and it was awful. I normally have the salmon and it is good - I think I will stick with that from now on. Management was aware of how long it had taken to get our meal out, then saw that I did not even eat mine yet never even offered to comp so much as the single glass of wine! I thought that was pretty cheap!"

  • "Another wonderful dinner at Breakwater! The food was delicious and the service was top notch as usual. The only drawback was the noise level as the night wore on (we started our meal at 7:30 PM) and when a nearby group added a chair to their table. This extra chair made the walkway difficult to navigate for guests and servers alike."

The manager (John) was very attentive to the customers and it was obvious he had things running smoothly between the kitchen, the wait staff and the customers. The 3 for 30 menu was a very good value and the food was delicious. Our server also recommended a very nice wine to compliment our dinner. I would definitely recommend Breakwater."

  • "The food was absolutely fantastic. We had the scallops diver for an appetizer. Then we took advantage of your restaurant week menu. We both had the wedge salad, I had the salmon (which was phenomenal - I loved, loved loved the sweet potato puree with the salmon) and my boyfriend had the shrimp and grits. He had the sorbet for dessert. I appreciated the waiter telling me that the beignets I ordered were not up the the chef's liking. I asked to sub creme brulee which you gladly did without hesitation. The wait staff was terrific - always there at just the right time but not overbearing. The valet parking was a bonus since finding parking in that area is hard to come by. Overall a great evening. Thank you!"

  • "Get off of the busy Main Street in Greenville, SC and sneak over to the street behind the ball park. What a great place Breakwater is. The Ahi Tuna was seared to perfection and the Diver Scallops were to die for. Everyone in my party had an excellent time and there were no complaints about the meal, only rave reviews. Our server,Julia, was more than wonderful, and we will definitely request her next time. We all had a great time, and we will be going back to this restaurant very soon. This was our best New Years Eve dinner in Greenville."

  • "I normally enjoy eatting at Breakwater. I love the staff. They are very nice and want to please. But, I walked in the door and it smelled of fish gone bad. It totally turned me off and I had a hard time enjoying my meal. I hope it was a one time thing, but I haven't been back. :("

  • "We went for New Year's Eve dinner. They sat us in such a small space where we could touch the other tables with our elbows if we wanted. It was very awkward. We definitely could hear the other tables' conversations, making it hard to talk within our own table. The waiter was forgetful (said he was off for a year & then came back) & the service was pretty slow...understandable due to the holiday. Wouldn't recommend the tuna. It had a peppercorn crust that was very overpowering & it was drenched in a somewhat sour sauce. The ribeye was good; typical. Not sure if we'll be back. If we do go, we'll stick to the bar."

  • "This was our second time to breakwater. The menu selections are unique but not crazy. I had the salmon with the sweet potatoes. It was outstanding and the portions are not too large. I like the option to do all tapas or order entrees. Also the salads are very flavorful land not too large. The service was great. Only complaint is that the acoustics need improvement. Great for foodies"

  • "2 of us had the pan seared tripletail and it was over the top...the risotto was the best we have ever had. My wife got the duck and said it was some of the best she had ever had. 2 had the short ribs and said they were excellent. Even had 1 order of filet and although she ordered it medium well it was enjoyed. This was one of the best all round dinners we have had in a good while, which says a lot since we just returned from an 8 day trip to Napa and San Francisco. All salads were excellent also."
