The bar at Breakwater offers a lively venue for locals and visitors alike. The fun, friendly atmosphere combined with warm Southern hospitality is a Breakwater signature.

Diner Reviews
  • "Enjoyed our foray into the Breakwater, with fantastic hamburgers, scallops and shrimp. Nice selection of wines as well as really nice bar. Especially enjoyed the Espresso martini."

  • "It was the 1st time we ate at the Breakwater. I had received a gift of a gift certificate and decided to use it for our anniversary dinner. The waiter staff was very attentive. The waiter let us know if we had any special dietary needs they'd be able to help us out. For a Thursday night it was an active restaurant."

  • "Waiter informed us of the specials, then took our appetizer order, then gave us a welcome period of socializing before ordering. Appetizers were delicious (Southern Sampler), as were the entrees. Great restaurant; we'll be back."

  • "We enjoyed our experience here! The service was great. The manager checked on us multiple times. The waiter accepted our living social deal even though it was not valid on a Friday night. The food was delicious! I had the fried chicken and others had the short rib and tuna. I have already made plans to go back!"
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "Love that tuna appetizer! As always, the menu has a good variety of things to choose from. You could easily have a wonderful dinner just from appetizers alone, but the entrees are enticing as well."

  • "The food was quite good. My wife and I both had the filet which was well cooked (accurately medium and medium well), nicely seasoned and the portion was generous. Our waitress was kind and courteous but a little green. The ambiance was nice aesthetically but my major complaint is that the bar crowd was far too loud and overwhelmed the entire restaurant, possibly we just picked a bad night, crowd wise. Overall, I would recommend Breakwater for a special night out. "

  • "Waiter seemed distracted. Very nonchalant. A few times he noted how it wasn't too busy but we still managed to wait quite a while for drinks and food. "

  • "The food is amazing! However, the portion sizes have drastically decreased since I was there last."

  • "Breakwater was surprisingly cozy, but yet open. I found the food delicious, menu easy and superb, wait staff was attentive. Highly recommend this!!! "

  • "Food was very good, but the menu is a bit limited."

  • "We were in town for my son's college graduation. Breakwater was the perfect restaurant for our family! An added treat was the park in downtown Greenville. It is SO worth a stroll down the street!"
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "Great server, great service, (not pushy but not slow), and of course great food. New fried green tomatoes w/ goat cheese and tomato jam is scrumptious! "
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "Loved the cocktail, Mango Crush I think the name was. A little pricey but certainly quality food, drink and service. Salmon was delicious, cooked according to your preference. Not many restaurants serve leg of lamb or rack of lamb and that was also delicious. The service is friendly but not pretentious. The bar was lively but not too noisy so perfect for couples and singles. "

  • "Just a little past the hustle, bustle on South Main Street, Breakwater is a wonderful new find for us. S I had the Braised Short Rib and it was awesome! William provided great, friendly service."
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "Guests in from Chicago, Jersey, and Charleston and all were quite impressed with food and venue."

  • "Food was to die for, very attentive service and beautiful surroundings. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Excellent food and great service. What more could you ask for "
    Dined on 4/26/2014
  • "They had a great, reasonably priced theater menu which my husband took advantage of. Their cornbread is the best I've ever tasted (and I've tasted a lot!) and for dessert we had the sorbet trio which was outstanding and beautifully presented. I had one of their specialties, the lamb meatloaf and it was delicious. "

  • "This was our first time at Breakwater. Great spot. Friendly and attentive service. Local spot with with a great night scene. My wife and I headed home after dinner, but the bar was hopping. Seemed like "the" place to be in Greenville."

  • "They made our anniversary special! Great food, service and very enjoyable! Highly recommend!"

  • "We had a wonderful meal, service by Cameron was outstanding. We will visit again for another special occasion"

  • "Six of us went out to celebrate a birthday (for which he received a desert with a candle) and an anniversary. Each of our meals were wonderful...creative and tasty salads, to yummy steak and lam meatloaf.... Each one of us said they would definitely eat there again."
    Dined on 4/15/2014
  • "There are so, so many more options in Greenville that blow this place out of the water both quality-wise and price-wise. I'm not sure what Breakwater's basis is for charging what they do. It's not quality and it's sure as heck not quantity. Make Breakwater a happy hour stop only."

  • "The charcuterie plate was good. The braised short ribs and duck breast were very good, both very flavorful and excellently prepared. The duck was cooked exactly as I requested. Desert was pathetic. The pecan tart was served cold. There is no excuse to ending an otherwise very good meal with such little effort. The manager of this restaurant needs to tighten things up. Service was OK although a little amateurish, and the wine list could use some thought although we did enjoy an excellent Domaine Serene Pinot. Breakwater has too much local competition to be so lackadaisical."

  • "My wife and I went to celebrate her Birthday. We had a wonderful dinner and excellent service."

  • "My Scallops were delicious. My friend had the Mussels and she enjoyed her dinner as well. Our server Cameron was very attentive and friendly. We will definitely be back."

  • "The food was really outstanding. Everyone agreed that this was the best meal we had ever had at Breakwater. Salmon and Ahi Tuna were both excellent. However, where were the beets in the beet salad?"
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Had a nice evening at Breakwater with special friends. Server, Cameron, was very good and other attendants were extremely friendly and helpful even bringing extra muffins as we sat talking after dinner. Unfortunately, the food was just soso. We had been here before and really enjoyed it but both my husband and I were disaapointed with our meals. We had brought freinds who had never been before so we hope their meals were better. We will try again because of the nice service and ambience but the chef needs to step it up. The argula salad had little taste and the entrees were luke warm with little flavor. They looked good but just didn't have much taste."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "This is normally one of our favorite Greenville picks, but this time wasn't as nice - we were seated next to a cackling, loud woman, and then the special was sold out - at 8:00. It also seems the menu is getting not as varied, (while now Soby's menu is improving)."

  • "We had not planned on dining out before catching a show downtown. My wifes brother called Friday afternoon and told us he would be in town and could meet us. Reservations for 7:15 were pushing it for him from the airport. As we waited, the staff accomodated us with great energy. They held our tapas order until our guest arrived. Food was fantastic and they got us out in a hurry to make the show."

  • "Breakwater started out strong with interesting small plates, but newer menu options are standard and too similar to other restaurants. Soup was good, but served lukewarm, Bouillabaisse was worst I've ever eaten. Seafood was cooked first and placed in insipid broth. The fish was dry and the scallops small. Clams were good. The pecan tart tasted like it had been heated with an acetylene torch. It was burnt to the plate and tasted like chemicals. The kitchen needs some serious attention. The food was also served too fast."
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "We have been to Breakwater several times and will go back. We find much to choose from on their menu, the service is always courteous and unrushed, even on a busy Friday evening, and the food is consistantly good! We are already looking forward to our next visit."

  • "First time here, the service was excellent and the food was very good. A good wine list too."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "Disappointed with the service not sure if it was the waiter covering too many diners in his station or the kitchen. But servicing a 7:30 PM Saturday night reservation on a timely basis should not be a challenge. Hoping this was just an off night. The food is very good so we put up with the noisiness - but slow service is not acceptable."

  • "This is a great place to have an wonderful experience prior to attending the warehouse theatre for a play. We felt as of we had a wonderful night out . This is a plus plus for the west side. Thanks Jon Rogers"

  • "Poor service. Waitor was slow, in attentive and rude."

  • "I've been patronizing all of the restaurants around Greenville for years, but this is my first trip to Breakwater. First impression was that the wine list was above average for the price point. I was also happy to see that the menu options were perfectly sized which made our meal choices much easier. Most of all, my filet was perfectly seasoned. In many restaurants around the country, it seems the chef either under-seasons the steak or drowns the entree in unnecessary sauces thus robbing the diner of the filet quality. My steak was perfect. Also, the waiter was told of our time constraints due to a concert....he nailed it and we didn't feel rushed. We'll definitely be back."

  • "We went to breakwater for our anniversary. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure you are satisfied. Or waiter, Cameron, was affluently having a bad night and worked very hard to make it up to us, although we weren't upset at all. Buy the extra special treatment was very much appreciated."

  • "On the negative side: The room has brick walls and hardwood floors, so LOT'S of noise. I also didn't like how the two-tops were all lined up side by side, there was a couple sitting at the table next to us, and even though they seemed very nice they were too close to us for privacy and comfort. . Also, I didn't like having to pay $5 to park, there being no free spaces anywhere for blocks. On the positive side: The staff were all very friendly. The menu is diverse (available online). Most important the food was good. the entrees were well prepared, displayed, and tasty, as were the sides. Portion size was good. We had one glass of wine, no appetizers or dessert, no other beverages than water and the 2 dinners. total was $68."
