Diner Reviews
  • "You would never expect this sleek, modern restaurant on a stretch of west Irving Park. It's a beautifully decorated space with fresh, innovative food. I had the house red wine, which was wonderful, and my husband had a drink from the cocktail list (their seasonal twist on an Old Fashioned) that he really enjoyed. It has it's own parking lot and outdoor dining on the side street. A dining experience not to be missed."

  • "Great wine list and awesome beer options- love the small plates here for sharing"

  • "Our server seemed a little "distracted"...when asked how the fish was prepared, she said, "sauteed, no roasted, no pan fried..oh I better go check..." My burger was dry, even though I ordered it med rare...My husband's hanger steak was very very tough.... My son ordered a cocktail that he sent back... the rest was very noisy... No, with so many restaurants to choose from in Chicago...I would not recommend this one."

  • "Terrific food and service! Moving even more towards a seasonal and locally-sourced menu so the line up will change often. Staff was energetic and friendly and all helped out with the service. Food was top notch, fresh and interesting and left us sorely wanting more bread to "mop up" our plates. Will definitely be back!!"

  • "This restaurant is terrific. Because they offer small and large plates, even if you're not an adventurous eater, you can find something. Staff is terrific. My only criticism is I think they need to add drapes or more acoustic paneling because when it is crowded at peak times on the weekend you can't hear your fellow diners. Food is delicious!"

  • "The food and service more than made up for the rather plain decor. Although the space is used very well, its still readily apparent that this is a former laudromat. That being said, the food is certainly not scrub-woman fare, and the aromas alone lets you know you've come to the right place. The burger is very upscale and delicious, while the striped sea bass is to die for, with crispy skin and tender flesh. We had two small plates, as well; the beet salad with feta and arugula and bacon vinagarette and the beer steamed mussels with bleu cheese and sriracha sauce were both absolutely wonderful. Dessert was a shared salted caramel popcorn panna cotta that we didn't think we could finish but was so good that I practically licked the dish."

  • "My college-age daughter and I enjoyed Bread & Wine; although, I prefer the old menu which I had viewed online a few months ago. We're both fit and healthy eaters, but the big plate selections are limited and our dinner portions were small. The french fries were terrific, though, and I'm glad we ordered them as a starter, because about a half hour after we returned home, we both were hungry again! We enjoyed the experience, it was right for us: parking was a breeze, the service was fast and friendly, and the food quality was fine, but I'm not likely to return- definitely not with my hungry husband or other children!"

  • "We walk to the restaurant so we consider it a neighborhood gem. The food is expertly prepared and presented. The menu is creative and always features unusual flavor combinations that work. I had the flap steak with hosin sauce paired with a memorable layered vegetable and cheese side. Our drinks were unusual versions of regular mixed drinks, very enjoyable. Service was attentive and helpful."

  • "We loved the food and service. Truly unique preparations. Delicious! A little too noisy for us, but in the genre of today's trendy restaurants."

  • "Wine and cheese list was amazing! I was here twice, once for dinner with friends and lunch. Service was outstanding, they know how to take care of you as a customer."

  • "We've been to B&W previously & suggested we celebrate an upcoming BDay with dinner here. We are all "foodies" & two in the restaurant industry. Our server Alex was fabulous. His knowledge of the menu & prep are what we expect & require. He made very helpful suggestions for wine & the Charcuterie which we enjoyed and our guest of honor loved ( both wine and starters). Menu was explained with attention to detail, which we all noted and appreciated. Our meals were served at the appropriate time after our initial starters, ( Alex really taking note of our time to finish and very timely asking about our wants and needs ...). Food was excellent. We all had a genuinely wonderful dining experience that we hope we can repeat again and again."

  • "I went to this restaurant because their brunch menu looked amazing. . Well it turns out they don't serve brunch at 130 on Saturday. Besides that I got a burger and it was delicious. Small menu."

  • "Great food, a little far out, but worth the drive! Food, service, ambience were all outstanding. We tried nearly everything on the menu and there wasn't a dish we didn't like."

  • "Sadly, brunch is only offered on Sundays. That was a sad realization on Saturday at 11 when we got there. The food/drinks seemed a bit pricey for what was offered. The wait staff was friendly and the food was good. Not the best I've had for the price, but good."

  • "As the title would suggest, a group of 4 of us ate at Bread & Wine the Saturday after Valentine's Day. The restaurant was full and we took a table in the back corner. Our server was great, he offered us excellent suggestions on how much food to order and on which dishes were the best. He was attentive and candid with us, which we all appreciated. Our group tried the gnocchi for a starter and the burger and the striped bass for main dishes, all of which were excellent. The menu is not large, but what they have they do well. The decor in the restaurant is cozy, with bookshelves in the back and low lighting. All of us left full and very satisfied with our experience."

  • "I went here with my girlfriend for valentines day, for a reservation I made at least three weeks prior. We really wanted to check this place out. Due to heavy traffic that night, we ended up being about an hour late to our reservation, but were greatest with open arms and we were able to be say right away. The only disappointing part about the night was out server. It took about 20 minutes just to great us and take our drink orders. I also asked to make sure our water glasses don't go empty, and this was a bit of a struggle for the wait staff to keep up"

  • "Went for dinner at 8:00 pm on a Saturday night. We arrived a few minutes early and our table wasn't ready (the place is on the smaller side) but we opted to sit at the chef's table/bar instead. The restaurant was packed, it was restaurant week. The staff was very friendly but seemed a little frazzled. The food was amazing. The only downside was we had to wait about 30 minutes for our drinks from the bar to come and when we asked for things like a refill on the bread, they never came. So I guess if you are expecting super attentive service or this would annoy you, you would have had a bad experience. It really didn't bother my husband and I, and we were happy to have a leisurely dinner and enjoy each others company."

  • "This was an awesome dining experience. I organized a diner with some friends to celebrate my wife's birthday and all I can say is: wow! Since you step in the hostess gives you the warmest welcomes. Service is amazing and the food is just unbelievable. I am going back only as a couple to enjoy a great wine and the marvelous food."

  • "My husand and I decided to dine here for restuarant week and enjoyed this place. My favorite drink was #80 it contained Moscato,GIn and lime. I kept ordering it over and over again. The food was good, small portions. The place was very busy, and we made reservations the day of. I was glad I was able to get in. It's a great place to grab a cocktail, nice gem for the neighborhood."

  • "I've been here many times and I've never been disappointed. Most recently we had dinner during Restaurant Week and their menu was outstanding! We had clear plates all around. Their servers are knowledgeable and friendly and give great suggestions upon request. The restaurant itself is quaint and low lit; perfect for a date night."

  • "This was my first time at this restaurant and I have to say I loved it. The ambiance was fantastic, the wine list was a treat, and I loved the little grocery area. I had read about this place awhile ago and finally made a reservation. I will definitely be back! I will also recommend this spot to friends and family."

  • "It's so nice to find great food and wine in an easy to get to, easy to park location. We have been to Bread & Wine for weeknight dinners and Sunday brunch. The staff is smart and easy going, the food is memorable. Brunch is decadent and sitting outside is a plus."

  • "Enjoyed Bread and Wine. We ate pretty simply-- both having the burger. It was flavorful, and grass fed which for me is a real plus. They have great fries and a very attentive and nice staff from start to finish. Most importantly, there's a nice vibe here, inviting and inclusive. It also has parking which is a nice plus. Recommend"

  • "staff at this restaurant were exceptional. Friendly and more than willing to offer suggestions. Just the right balance of checking in throughout our visit. We sat at the chefs bar and had a great time watching the prep and the kitchen choreography. there will be at least a couple more visits down the road to try some of the dishes we saw being prepared. Food was fresh, creative and very well balanced. Timing of delivery of each course was perfect. I would go back for the cocktails alone - delish."

  • "My date and I waited 15 minutes past our reservation time and at no point did the hostess apologize or offer any suggestion/alternate seating etc. The bartender was friendly and very well informed on the menu/drinks. Once we were finally seated, we were greeted by a very noticeable draft which was (attempting to be) offset by a plug-in space-heater. Our waiter did a poor job explaining the menu/drinks/specials even after we'd told him that this was our first time dining. He was frazzled the entire time and outside of filling our water glasses repeatedly neglected to offer anything extra to the night. For the price, I expect a complete experience and did not receive anything close to that here. I would not recommend to my friends."

  • "We tried Bread and Wine as they are one of the restaurants participating in Restaurant Week. The food was delicious and they also have a good wine list. We enjoyed sitting at the kitchen bar and watching the chefs create. A bit noisy but worth it!"

  • "We visited during Chicago Restaurant Week and therefore a $33 way available. We also had a couple of bottles of their wonderful house wine. It is from a California Winery and was a great red blend. I was impressed that it is available by the glass, the 1/2 bottle and the full bottle. I am a wine lover, yet my husband only likes a taste, so the 1/2 bottle was perfect. I counted a number of 1/2 bottles available. We added the Charcuterie - Chefs choice, which was 3 cheeses and 3 meats. The Star was a velvety smooth Liver Pate, but all were wonderful. We will certainly be back in the spring to see what that seasons menu will bring.."

  • "Finally tried this little place that we've passed by so many times, and what a wonderful experience. Food is top-notch . There are some great vegetarian options, which is one reason we chose this place. I know people love their BYOBs, but I was thrilled to find a bar offering an array of classic-to-inventive cocktails. Waitstaff was attentive and helpful without being annoyingly chatty. Parking lot a godsend on a cold, snowy Chicago evening. The only bothersome part was the noise level; we struggled to hear each other over the music and neighboring diners, but that seems to be par for the course these days and we weren't surprised by it. The food, drink and service more than made up for it, and we'll most definitely be repeat customers."

  • "Food was reasonably priced, but lacked something in every dish. Most dishes seemed under-seasoned. Service was slow and food came without much description."

  • "While I have eaten here several times for dinner, I had never been to brunch until last Sunday. The food is as creative for brunch as for dinner, with excellent quality and a wonderful blending of flavors. The brunch drinks were also interesting twists on some old favorites. We had the gnocchi dish with tasso charon and the BLT, which were both wonderful. The gnocchi is more like polenta than the pasts with the same name, but it is well flavored and has a great texture. The poached egg on top was perfectly cooked and the tasso charon (a sauce vaguely reminiscent of hollandaise) was a pleasant creamy surprise. The BLT came with a huge portion of hash browns that were crispy and tasty as well. Highly recommended."

  • "This was my second trip to Bread & Wine, both experiences were fantastic. We started with a glass of wine that was recommended by the bartender. He gently encouraged the second option after I was going to choose the house wine. I appreciated that! We started with the charcuterie & again our waitresses made wonderful recommendations. Next we decided on a dinner if small plates- the beat salad, the mussels, the fries & gnocchi. It was all delicious but I don't recommend getting both the fries & the fried gnocchi as they are too similar. The staff was friendly & efficient given that B&W was bursting at the seams by the time we left. Enjoy!"

  • "The food was delicious. I had seabass, tdf! Cocktail #80 is so simple, yet tasty. And lets not forget the warm roasted squash, it was mouthwatering. The place is perfect for a romantic date or a small celebration with friends. Service was awesome!!"

  • "If you haven't tried Bread and Wine...YOU MUST!! Great service, including a very attentive and friendly owner (Lisa) who was genuinely interested in her customers' experience. The meats and cheeses were great, the Sea Bass excellent. But what struck me was the excellence and professionalism of the cooks and staff. My date and I bought them all a drink after the restaurant closed, just to say thanks! You won't be dissapointed, we had a great time."
