BREAD & TULIPS (Pane & Tulipani) is a cozy neighborhood spot serving rustic Italian cooking in a casual setting. The menu is inspired by the regional diversity of Italy and features handmade pastas and pizzas, in addition to traditional antipasti, crostini etc.

The warmly lit dining room is informal and comfortable; a simple tulip adorns each table.

The semi- private chef's table in the wine alcove provides a welcoming space for larger parties. A family style tasting menu with optional wine pairings is also available at the chef's table and throughout the dining room, for groups of 6 or more.

  • "As a middle age commuter, I don't go out to eat in NYC. But my son (works in NY too) and I decided to try a new restaurant for restaurant week. We chose this one just because it was close to work. Since this was lunch, the waiter concentrated on fast service. She came to our table as soon as a glass or plate was empty. We chose something from the restaurant week specials and were not disappointed. A meatball appetizer, italian bread, fettucine and a desert. Was a nice lunch. Gotta bring my wife next time she is in town."

  • "It's never a good start to have a restaurant below grade. The atmosphere was okay. We had pizza and anti pasta and two drinks which came to over $80. Pizza was really skimpy on the toppings and totally flavorless. Three of the 8 slices had no cheese on them, that's how skimpy."

The server was a bit green however she really tried her best to please us. The cozy atmosphere makes this an anytime, quick-bite hang-out place for us. The food was so amazing we got the kale salad the meatballs the steak, the lamb pasta, and the vanilla bean panna cotta. The portions were a decent size but I didn't feel grossly full afterwards. I can't wait to go back and eat some more!"

  • "I couldn't get a reservation on Friday evening, but Saturday was not a problem. We went for the chicken. We're scouring the city for a replacement to Village's, a now long gone restaurant with a crisp and juicy chicken. Village's was cooked on the bone and this makes all the difference. The chef doesn't cut it; the customer cuts into it. At B&T, the chicken was good. The chef executed his recipe, I assume, flawlessly. But it wasn't Village's and do it was good, not great."

  • "We were expecting something more for a $25 restaurant week lunch; although the food was good there wasn't anything particularly special. The restaurant is in a basement, with no natural light and with lighting that kept the place dark. The noise level didn't help. Our waitress was fine and the best part was a fettuccine with veal. The salad course was mundane and the desert was good but not at all memorable."

  • "My boyfriend and I tried this place during restaurant week for dinner. The portions were relatively small, but it was good. He had the salmon dish which was simple and nothing to brag about. The decor is great as a romantic setting, all wood in the lower level and dimly lit. The waitress was attentive and overall it was a good meal."

  • "I made a very early reservation not knowing how busy the restaurant gets, we were the only table in the entire restaurant so I was a little put off by how dry and inconvenienced the waitress made me feel. I felt rushed to pick which wine I wanted because she seemed annoyed that I hadn't decided before I asked for one. Outside of that, the service was fine, I probably wouldn't have even noticed had I not been the only patron needing to be tend to. Food was good, the best house olives I have ever had and the restaurant is beautiful and would be great for a dinner party for 8-10 people. "

For our entrees we ordered the mortadella pizza (still thinking about it and would go back to try another one of their pizzas) and their tagliatelle Nero pasta. Pasta sauce was very light and good. "

  • "I love this place--especially for lunch. I first went with my husband for dinner shortly after they opened. We had liked it very much. Then I recently went with a friend for lunch. It was excellent. Their prix-fix lunch is a fantastic value. I had their meatball appetizer and the beet & ricotta ravioli. Two very good dishes. The ravioli was beautifully prepared: pasta had perfect shape, visual appeal and the filling was velvety smooth in that great beet red color. My friend had the kale salad and the trenette with bolognese. I tasted the kale salad as well. It was refreshing and flavorful, dressed just the right amount. I had the mixed sorbet for dessert and each flavor was delicious. Perfect lunch spot to meet with friends."

  • "Four of us went for restaurant week and all ordered off the restaurant week menu. We all ordered differnt things--the appetizer meatballs were very good, the kale salad was good, the shrimp was OK For the main we all ordered differnet items; the steak was very good, the scallops were good, the fish was fair and the steak was DRY--very disappointing since a friend had recommended the chicken from when she went--but not during restaurant week. Not sure if they serve diffenerntly for restaurant week--if they do it was a big mistake. We wanted to try it because of restaurant week but we will not be back."

  • "I reserved a table for 2 and was pleased to be seated in a cozy semi-circular booth. We enjoyed the meatballs and shrimp & chorizo skewers to start, but the sumptuous pan-seared sea scallops were the star attraction. We split the delightful chocolate mousse with hazelnut gelato as well as the outstanding orange-infused olive oil cake with passion fruit sorbetto for dessert. The wine pairing was something I raved about to colleagues the next day (Sauvignon Blanc, Chianti, and a very lovely Brachetto d'Acqui). Compliments to the chef for thoughtful flavor and texture combinations (fresh pepper on the shrimp, creamy ricotta with the meatballs, subtle citrus on the fennel salad, passion fruit and orange) and the minimalism to enjoy them."

  • "The waitress, Jess, was very attentive and our table was readily restocked with bread and sparkling water as needed. I had the roasted beet and goat cheese ravioli and sea bass with broccoli rabe, both dishes were excellent. There is a nice vibe in this place and though it was crowded, I didn't feel overwhelmed. I recommend making reservations if you choose to have dinner there. The bar is also a great place to mingle. I plan on returning soon!"

Dim lighting and beautiful decor. Everyone there was extremely friendly. Only cons were that service was a little slow and the food was a little pricey...otherwise great!"

  • "Tips for the management of Bread & Tulips. - We book through OpenTable to avoid confirmation phone calls when you book a reservation the traditional way. At B&T, they insist that you call them to confirm your reservation even though you have already confirmed it with OT. - One of the marks of a service oriented restaurant (especially one as small as B&T) is to carry over your bar tab to your dinner table. At B&T, the waiter insisted that we close our bar tab even though our table was only a few feet away. - The most annoying thing that happened was that the waiter told the 4 of us to either order from prix fix or the regular menu but that we could not do both because it would throw off their timing... REALLY? We ignored this directive."

  • "My date and I had a great time at the restaurant because we felt comfortable and the food came out rather quickly. Only one resteraunt week menu was available and every course were very small appetizer like meals. I was still hungry after the "three course meal." The bill came out to be about $200 which made me feel as though I paid to sit in a place to eat appetizers with my date rather than having an excellent dining experience. It was a good experience, but I was expecting something better."
