A word from Brasserie Montmartre
Tucked away on a narrow street in the historic Calumet building in the heart of downtown, this rustic-refined French-American gastro-pub evokes the feel of Paris while being quintessentially Portland. In the heart of downtown, the Brasserie is a place to wind up or wind down. It's a perfect venue for date nights, business lunches, relaxing after work, on-the-town dining, or a post-shopping retreat. Private dining suitable for intimate fêtes or more boisterous affairs. This local brasserie elicits the true essence and spirit of the word “Montmartre,” defined literally as the highest point in Paris, and now figuratively as a perfectly French-American respite for food, drink and conviviality.

Diner Reviews
  • "I purposefully created a French date night for my husband and myself,a way to present my new passport and Paris travel plans .A friend recommended Brasserie Monmartre. On line reviews wereinconsistent. Our experience from door arrrival to exit was excellant! Service was intuitive, warm, informative ,professional, and consistent across multiple wait staff. This was the perfect introduction to our Paris adventure. The food presentation was lovely, timely presented.Next time I would skip the strawberry shortcake. Happy and full on exit."

  • "The restaurant was attractive with nice ambience. Service was slow and spotty. Food was good but the salmon dish was nearly raw which they tried to defend by sayiny they use sushi grade fish. If we had wanted sushi we wouls have gone to a sushi place. Lamb and chicken were quite good. Desserts were good."

  • "Four of us were out to celebrate some good news and we chose the Brasserie because we were in the mood for French style: oysters, steak frites, red wine, etc. One of us is a definite foodie who hadn't been here before and she kept gasping with amazement about the oysters, the steak, the pommes frites, etc. The server described the oyster choices with the detail usually used for describing wines! We spent a lot, but it was worth every penny."

  • "I'm not sure exactly what happened or what changed, but the food and menu have changed dramatically over the years. And it didn't change for the better, but for worse. The brunch menu seems minimal. The most favorite, pork belly, is no longer available. The duck confit, my husband's favorite, is no longer available either. The service is not as great as it was few months ago."

  • "This was our first time in this restaurant, and we chose to come to celebrate a birthday. We heard from friends that this restaurant has excellent food, especially steaks, at a reasonable price. They were right. And the staff was excellent, very attentive to our needs, and prompt to respond to any concerns we had."

  • "It was not our first time at this place. Every time we go there, we know that food would be awesome and service be great! Waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable of menu. We ordered chicken breast and roasted lamb and it was delicious as usual. Thank you!"

  • "I have always loved the brasserie montemarte but I was disappointed in the portions of food for the price , especially the charcuterie Service was great and the ambiance"

  • "The food was overall very good. The prix fixe options for Bastille Day were great. The service was kind of slow. We tended to see our waitress in 15 minute cycles. We realized that she was spread all over the restaurant, making it tough for her to check up on us regularly."

  • "The Brasserie has been in Portland for as long as I can remember. It has always had great ambience, food, drinks, and jazz. We missed the old paper table cloths with crayons, but that did not stop us from having a great time. The food was delicious, and we ate a lot of different items sharing them amongst us. We spent our 16th anniversary there and it was wonderful. You'll certainly enjoy it too."

  • "Brasserie Montmartre has been one of our favorites for years, so it was the obvious choice for our anniversary dinner. The menu selections were varied and extensive for both food and wine. We had the Steak Frites and Roasted Leg of Lamb. Both were perfectly done (med. rare) and delicious. We also shared the Netarts oysters and Totten Inlet Mussels for starters and added the Grilled Asparagus with Parmesan Vinaigrette. For desert, we had the fresh strawberry shortcake and espresso. It all could not have been better! And the service was extremely good and prompt. Live jazz music 4 nights a week."

  • "Amazing food but wow has was the service beyond BAD! Waiter was arrogant, lazy and rarely found, expediter was rude and surly and never did get a manager to stop by the table to see if we could be attended by someone else - sad part was it wasn't even that busy. Really disappointing on what was to have been a celebratory evening."

  • "I use to frequent this establishment quite a bit when I lived in PDX. I took my fiancee there for a special meal and to see what a great place it was, or use to be. The service was slow and we had to send back a drink because it wasn't made correctly. The food was fine, portions were small for the price. They seemed to be understaffed and our waiter seemed stressed."

  • "I was in the mood for something Frenchy as close to work as possible (I work downtown), and the Brasserie hit the spot! Tasty quality food at a reasonable price."

  • "How was Brasserie Montmartre? Surprisingly good! The roast chicken breast with ragu of giant beans was just outstanding. I never eat everything on my plate but I sure did there, including a good sopping up. Steak with fingerling potatoes was equally good. Price very reasonable - we each had the $35 3 course menu. We'll for sure be back - I'll bet other menu items are good, too. Although it will be hard not to have the chicken again…."

  • "Met there after a timbers game with our friends to celebrate his birthday. It was quiet but it was a Sunday night and just the perfect setting to celebrate his milestone. The staff and waiter were on the mark and explained the menu after quickly bringing us our drinks. One drink was not very sweet and they took it back and I heard the word yummy when they brought it back. The dinner choices we made were the ribeye burger with fries and the steak frites with fingerlings. The steak was done to perfection, and as ordered. The burgers were mouth-watering and the Aioli topped the fries off. We will be back! "

  • "It's lost it's luster. This was the 2nd time we've tried it since it re-opened (the other time was about a year ago). Either we've been hit by 2 anomalies or the place just isn't that good. Painfully slow service, they may be understaffed?, and marginal food, at best. When we did receive service, the staff was very friendly and accommodating, but, for the majority of our restaurant, from entry to departure, was like being in a no-man's-land of service. You can find much better food nearly anywhere in the city and better service at a McMenamins (it may be surly but at least you can wave down someone for service)."

  • "We told our waiter we had to go to the symphony. He did not act like he cared and we had to pester him to get service which was very slow. and we still got out too late and had to pack our desserts to go as we did not have time to eat them there. We will not return for a long time."

  • "All around we thought it was great. Enjoyed our food and drinks and the service was very good. We shared salads and shrimp cocktail--both very fresh and tasty. Entrees were lamb, burger and rib-eye steak--cooked as ordered and delicious. The fried fingerling potatoes with the rib eye steak were incredible! Shared rhubarb cobbler and creme brulee. Both good. Only prob: we were unhappy with our table but despite the room being half empty, we couldn't be reseated. We were told the booths were reserved but at least one booth was empty the entire time we were eating. Small but annoying issue that stops me from giving an "outstanding" in any category."

  • "We went for the Mother's Day Grand Buffet and was quite charmed by the atmosphere. However when we went through the Buffet line almost all trays were completely empty so we had to sit back down and wait as new trays slowly came out. My eggs benedict was overcooked, the egg did not run at all. Other than that the food was not too bad."

  • "The food was above average for mom's day brunch: chicken thighs, gruyere cheese gratin potatoes, eggs, bacon, sausage... all the usual brunch items plus some great brioche, green salad, boring cut fruit. That said, you would probably expect some great desserts (who's mom doesn't love dessert?) WRONG. Brownies and jam bars. period. EPIC FAIL!! For four people, we paid about $150 for brunch with drinks that were NOT INCLUDED (coffee, one cocktail, water). Expensive, yes. Worth it? Not in my book. That plus the fact that they ONLY served brunch and wouldn't let us order off their regular menu (we came for the duck fat fries). So disappointed!!!!! The takeaway: go if you have a yen for something, but don't do it for a special occasion meal."

  • "This is a lovely restaurant in the heart of downtown Portland. The ambience is great as is the food. There was a jazz trio playing while we had dinner and it was a nice complement to the food and wine. I highly recommend Brasserie Montmartre!"

  • "We visit Portland periodically and are always impressed and pleased with the restaurant scene. We've visited this restaurant several times over the years - including before the remodel - and have always had good value for money. We'll be back there again"

  • "Fun, lively, and great service. Approachable, affordable menu and wine list. Full bar service too. And music. How great is that?! Food seems to range from good to great, for example the French onion soup is Meh (wouldn't order a second time), the Steak Frites (delicious tender marinated, sliced and fries truffle oil, of course!) was outstanding, so much so I'll struggle over trying something else next time. We'll be back."

  • "We came here while visiting Portland. The service was welcoming and warm, and the food divine. We had one mishap with an entry that went missing. The waiter dealt with the situation swiftly, and my husband has his food shortly after we brought the problem to the waiter's attention. It was a busy Saturday night. This probably would not happen at a quieter time. The food was fabulous, and it did not impact our experience at all."

  • "To be honest, we only tried this restaurant because we saw it in Grimm. Once we got there, you could immediately feel the vibe of the place. It was very busy and energetic, we laid out and fashionable. There was a little bit of a wait, even with reservations, but that was because so many people were trying to get a table. The service was very good, and the food was excellent. They have a very good selection of wines, and the best part was the dessert. I don't recommend taking your children there, but for a couples night out, Brasserie Montmartre is definitely romantic and the place to be."

  • "I brought my wife & kids here for Easter brunch & was not disappointed. The staff were professional & worked to keep everything flowing smoothly. Food choices were tasty, Shepard's Pie, cold smoked salmon, French toast fruit, desserts, the list goes on & on. Nice setting w/ lots of patrons. Had a nice time."

  • " this was my 6 or 7th time to the brasserie .It was good but it seemed to have lost a little originality and the food reminded me of the upscale restaurants on a cruise ship. very nice but nothing to talk about later."

  • "I've wanted to go here for awhile so when i saw they had a Easter brunch i thought it would be a good chance to try a bunch of different things. The food was pretty good and I was glad they had a couple vegetarian entrees. I was a lIttle disappointed that they didn't have more specifically French food. Seems they could have easily introduced crepes or brie. "

  • "Brasserie Montmartre was a great choice for a prom dinner! My date and I enjoyed the delicious Macaroni & Cheese and Pommes Frites appetizers, a perfect way to start of the meal. Then we shared the Trout, and it was super tender! Wish we could have stayed for dessert, definitely will be coming here again :)"
