A word from Brasserie Monte Carlo
If you are looking for a unique place to go for brunch, lunch, or dinner, Brasserie Monte Carlo is the place to go. Stepping into the restaurant, one can not help but notice the beautiful mural (designed by Dianne Hoppman) that takes up the whole right wall, and the rustic decor that helps add warmth to the room. Sonny Abraham owner/chef of Brasserie Monte Carlo has been in the restaurant business since 1985. Sonny has done a wonderful job of staffing his restaurant with only the best. He personally completed his culinary training in Lausanne, Switzerland and his matre d' worked at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC. It is truly a team effort at Brasserie Monte Carlo, at times you may even see Sonny waiting on a table to help his staff out, or helping in the kitchen or even providing wine service. Sonny's goal is to bring the taste of Washington's well known restaurants to downtown Bethesda but for a fraction of the cost maintaining quality, value and service.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "As a return custom, we always find the food to be fresh and delicious! Your food is cooked to order and served hot. We recommend the fish dishes."

  • "On a Saturday night there were only two servers and no support staff. They were running, but inevitably there was poor service. We had to ask for silverware and napkins. We never received bread, although other tables did. Our request fro coffee and tea were forgotten."

  • "I rate the food in a restaurant very good or excellent only if the ingredients are at least as good as those I use at home and the flavors are better than those I am able to create at home. In this case, the beef medallions were not of the quality I purchase for home use and the flavors were only fair. Also disappointing was the salad dressing. The selection of wines by the glass is very limited and features wines that generally sell for $10 or less a bottle when one purchases a case. ."

  • "It is pretty quiet on a Friday evening, which we did not mind. The food was OK, nothing to scream about. The server was helpful to recommend us to buy the wine in a bottle vs. a glass as we are allowed to take home the left over wine. It is a cheaper option than by the glass if you drink more than one glass."

  • "ok restaurant. like the small size, nothing special on the menu. terrible cappuccino. Would not rush back"

  • "My wife and I got a groupon. I was kind of weary based on past reviews, but in the end I was pleasantly surprised. I had smoked salmon, duck, and chocolate mousse. Salmon salad was good. Duck was kind of a fatty, but portion was fine. The mousse wasnt anything special. My wife had beet salad and cod (special); both were better choices than mine. She had the apple tart for dessert, which was good, but nothing special as well. As for the tables being too closed together; we didnt have this problem being seated near the windows. I could see if you were seated along the wall, the tables might be closed together. My recommendation is to have dinner early, so that you have your pick of tables. Our reservation was at 6:30 on Sat night."

  • "We had a great meal here. My wife is allergic to gluten and dairy, so we don't eat out much. Sonny and Sam were very responsive to our concerns and provided excellent service. There were not a lot of options on the menu for my wife, but she loved the one she picked! Thanks."

  • "My husband and I had a great time dining here on our first anniversary. The servers were friendly and helpful. The food, wine, and desert were delicious! It's definitely worth dining here on a special occasion."

  • "I love a restaurant where they know you personally. Everything is to like about Brasserie Monte Carlo. It is cozy on a cold night, as it was when we went there recently with four other people. We can depend on the food and service being excellent and are happy to take friends. It is a relaxing ambiance. It is everything a restaurant should be in our opinion. The owner, who is a chef, really cares about his customers and the restaurant's reputation, which is reassuring to know. Did I mention good value--you get that as well. It is still a lesser known gem of a place--and I like it that way! You definitely feel great after an evening out at Brasserie."

  • "We arrived 15 minutes early before they opened for a Sunday Brunch, but they welcomed us in and treated us to a complimentary glass of "bubbly". A window seat and no noise completed a fine place to visit. Sheila in Washington."

  • "Although I read similar reviews, we tried it anyway. The food was good (not particularly to my partner's liking or overly inspired). But there are WAY too many tables packed WAY too tightly together. Plus, even though it was a fixed menu, service didn't seem to be all that great. We waited about 10 mins to get water and a menu and I heard someone behind me say they waited 15 mins. I'd try again, but I'm not sure if my partner is up for it"

  • "This rather small restaurant was packed on a Saturday evening, but the service was friendly, prompt and efficient. My wife ordered the filet medallions and loved the peppercorn sauce. I had the osso bucco style short ribs and would recommend them to any fan of that dish. The owner helped us pick a Languedoc that accompanied our choices nicely and was well priced; he also had it decanted for us. We both enjoyed the green apple tarte for dessert and thought it was outstanding. We look forward to returning and trying some different dishes. There was one large group celebrating a birthday near us, hence our description of the noise level as "energetic." My guess is that on an average night, it would be quieter--perhaps moderate."

  • "Even in the snowy weather, this neighborhood gem was still open and serving. Excellent service and ambiance. Definitely a go-to place for a special occasion."

  • "Nice little place with good music BUT we were the only ones there. Squash soup was strange, rockfish was not fresh, pork tough, apple dessert was frozen....sad."

  • "Brasserie Monte Carlo has been located on this busy corner of the Bethesda Restaurant District for years. I am glad that I finally stepped in for dinner. It is small and the staff is attentive. The food was very good. The wine I chose was not a great one, but otherwise it was a fine experience."

  • "My husband and I ate here on Saturday night and had a wonderful meal. I loved my appetizer (salad with fresh anchovies) and entrée (duck breast). My husband's choices (French onion soup and trout were equally good). My only "criticism" is that the restaurant needs to cater more to the rise in gluten-free (GF) options, particularly for dessert. I would have liked a GF dessert option other than the blueberry sorbet (which was too icey). My husband's apple tart, though, was great (according to him)."

  • "quiet saturday night, only 5 tables of guests. but you had the strong sense they do not have enough staff working. anytime we wanted anything from water to wine, to ask where are food was, we had to stand to waive somebody over. the dinner when it came was very good. but it too took forever. of all the restaurants in Bethesda, I see no reason to make it back to this one."

  • "My wife and I had a very pleasant and enjoyable dinner. The onion tart was fantastic, as well as the escargot. French onion was also taste. The duck medium rare was perfect - never had better duck in my life - excellent! Lamb stew was also good. And for desert the apple tart was so fantastic! Would recommend and come back again!"

  • "Low lighting sets a romantic ambiance. The tables are situated closely. So, for those who are not comfortable with dining in very close quarters where your chair may touch the stranger's chair seated behind you during your entire dining experience then you should not attempt this restaurant. But if you don't mind hearing your neighbor's conversation and the close seating then you're in for a treat with the mushroom ragout with red wine reduction and veal jus to start; the wild rockfish for an entree; and the tiramisu for a perfect finish. The meal was so devine. I will definitely return again."

  • "I had a coupon so that prompted my first visit to the Brasserie. It was a quiet night in advance of a snowstorm and the waiter was on his own (someone called in sick) but he was very attentive, knowledgeable and polite. Loved the pasta appetizer with peas and lardon, as well as the pork tenderloin with mustard cream sauce. My beau enjoyed the onion soup and duck breast. We both took our dessert home - the green apple tart - delicious! The menu features traditional dishes, well-executed and presented. I'm sure it's a favorite among Bethesda locals."

  • "Delicious entrees and appetizers, helpful staff. We ordered squash soup (fantastic) and French Onion soup (needed more cheese/bread); the entrees were delicious (pork tenderloin and beef ribs) but the menu did not indicate sides served with them (sides were delicious, just not fully listed on menu)"

  • "We were pleasantly surprised by Monte Carlo! We like French food and they didn't disappoint. We had the delicious lamb stew! It was a wonderful way to start the New Year!"

  • "We have been here several times for brunch and dinner in the past. We scheduled an early brunch for 5 people on a Sunday morning, and we were not disappointed. Brunch fare ranges from sweet (delicious, melt-in-your-mouth brioche-style french toast with fresh fruit) to savory (perfectly-done eggs benedict with bacon or salmon). The outdoor seating is wonderful in warm weather, and the inside of the restaurant is lovely and reminds one of a European cafe. We will definitely return."

  • "My second time there, but both situations were not typical (Christmas, birthday party); each had fixed menu. We were happy to find a place open Xmas day. Menu was prix-fixe. I chose duck leg and was a bit disappointed. It was smaller than I'd hoped and skin was flabby (no effort to brown skin). Accompaniments skimpy. One kinda hopes for a hearty meal Christmas day. My company's beef much better and she is picky about beef. Excellent squash soup and desserts. Paper covered tablecloths were odd for a place like this. Service was good overall, though a bit slow and one server smelled of cigarettes."

  • "We had Christmas dinner at BMC as a last minute decision and were delighted. Linen tablecloths and napkins, courteous service, good food well presented, noise level lower than most restaurants (maybe due to the small intimate space) - could carry on a conversation without raising voices. Price was reasonable. Would recommend to friends and would dine there again."
    Dined on 12/25/2013
  • "The Christmas Day lunch was good and relatively inexpensive, but the staff was too busy, so that gaps in service repeatedly had to be corrected. We waited for dessert for about half an hour."

  • "Good food, reasonable prices (unlike Paris), pleasant atmosphere, a little cramped (just like Paris), and friendly staff. Overall a very enjoyable time."

  • "Due to the recent snow the restaurant was completely empty but that worked well for us since we were having a memorial lunch for a friend that passed away. We all had the same meal... the filet... and it was wonderful cooked all the ways we had it. Service left us alone and let us stay for hours to reminisce. Thank you!"

  • "Went out with my family, wife, son , daughter in law with a surpirse visit from 6 year old grandson for dinner to celebrate birthday. Onion Tart, butter nut squash and onion soups were very good. Sea bass, chicken and pork tenderloin entrees were all very good, with my salmon, although tasty, served a bit overcooked when I asked for medium. Service was a little slow with only the matre'd /main waiter and one buss boy serving entire small retaurant of 20 or so tables. It is a very good place for dinner for two , which comprised most of the diners Friday evening. Dessert choices were limited with the apple tart being very good- Coffee was excellent."

  • "My husband and I really enjoyed dinner here. We were actually the only diners there, which was a little disconcerting, but also lovely. The service was excellent and the food was great. The onion soup was among the best that I've had and the duck was also excellent (if also the smallest one I've ever had). My husband had the smoked salmon salad which he enjoyed and the braised beef short ribs. This dish was exceptionally good. We will definitely be returning."

  • "Surprisingly large choice of dishes on the lunch menu, and at reasonable prices. All of us enjoyed our meals. Too bad more people aren't aware of this outstanding alternative to a run-of-the-mill lunch."

  • "We have been here before and it was as good as ever. Service was spot on - they made a special dish for the five year old with us. The dining room is small but comfortable. The beef medallions and the chicken dish were excellent. Deserts were also first class - the chocolate cake and the apple tart were also superb and came in good portions. We love this place!"

  • "This is a small restaurant but cozy. The escargot and halibut special were delicious. The chef came out several times to make sure we were happy. So nice to go to a restaurant that has a warm vibe as opposed to the cold atmosphere at many Bethesda restaurants. We will definitely go back. Our hesitant teens loved it too."
