Diner Reviews
  • "Extensive wine list. Excellent food. Good Service."
    Dined on 4/9/2014
  • "We met old friends for an alfresco dinner on a warm evening. The tables outside are a little small for 6, but great for 5 or less. The salmon steaks were excellently cooked to order from a perfect medium to medium well and delicious. I would go there to eat the salmon again. The beef tenderloin was melt-in-your mouth. On grilled items, diners choose one of several sauces offered and a side. Everyone raved about the sauce they chose and the vegetable side was cooked to a perfect tender-crisp. The wine list offers many French selections by both the glass and the bottle. They also serve European beers, but no bar. All servers are French and provide very good service. Can't wait to go again."

  • "The pate de campange was excellent. My wife's trout and my halibut were perfectly prepared and delicious. A nice pinot gris from the Alsace was a good accompaniment. Finally, we chose the special raspberry souflee and the profiteroles for our desserts - both were scrumptious. Can't wait to return. Oh yes - the service was knowledgeable, friendly and with just the right amount of attention."

  • "I had not been to Max and Julie's Brasserie before and what a treat it was. The food was full flavored and really delicious. The French onion soup was amazing along with the beef bourguignon. I will definitely visit them again."

  • "This restaurant is one of my families favorites. We frequent it when we are in the neighborhood. The food and service aare excellent with unexpected delicacies on the menu. One draw back. If you have a party of 8 or more and need to eat upstairs, there is no elevator."

  • "I've been to Max and Julie's a few times and always been pleased. The food choice is good, with some exceptional items. I had the "os à moelle " which was a bone cut in half longways - simply excellent if you like that sort of thing. Take a look at the menu on-line and if you like French fine dining then I'd expect you to find something you would enjoy."

  • "I have not had such a good lunch in years. The food was incredible, and the service was top notch! The wine list is also remarkable and reasonably priced. What a good experience"

  • "This was at least my 6th time dining here. Excellent value for brunch on Sat. and Sun. This trip was with a friend and we had a table outside on the terrace fronting Montrose Blvd. Everything was lovely and delicious. Brunch favorites: soft-boiled eggs, ham, and arugula and Eggs Benedict - their version is served atop nutmeg flavored waffles - yum! We started with the charcuterie platter which was very good. It was a beautiful day and we lingered for quite awhile enjoying the sun and cool breeze. Max and Julie's has become a go to place for me and I've never been disappointed. Highly recommended."

  • "Seemed like the upstairs patio would be a nice place to sit during the cooler months. Decent wine list. Authentic French cuisine."

  • "Service was definitely poor. We had to get up to find out waiter TWICE. He never checked on us and was not very friendly. It seemed that every other table was getting better service than we were. The food on the other hand was pretty good. The "fresh lemonade" didn't taste very fresh but it was still drinkable. Luckily the weather was nice to enjoy our time outside but everything else that was offered was lacking. Never coming back here again."

  • "I have eatten here a number of times. I think this was the best lunch I have had here. Quiet enough to conduct business, food good enough that it was impressive to my French colleague."

  • "The restaraunt was cute. It had a nice patio and was very charming. The food quality was high but execution lacked a bit. The server disappeared for a period of time and the bussers/assistants were a bit sloppy trying to pour glasses of water. We were crammed into a small little corner table by the kitchen and bathroom entrances even though we set a reservation weeks ago (it was a quiet night in terms of quantity of patrons and they could have accommodated us better). I would still recommend the restaurant but they have a little bit to work on."

  • "This was our third and worst visit to Max and Julie's. Server totally messed up the order. Never got our salad. One entre was forgot and then rushed through the kitchen. Lamb had NO taste whatsoever. Filet my wife ordered was fantastic. Steak tar tar for my son was just poor again with little flavor. After bill was presented and paid, server forgot to charge us for a second bottle of wine and he just brought us another bill......He seemed pretty cavalere about the entire process and no apology. Highlight of the meal was the fantastic ice cream and puff pastry desert."

  • "We were first time diners here. I was looking for a good French restaurant for my husband' so birthday found this one which had good reviews. We arrived early and were quickly seated at a table of our choice outside. The waitress (who spoke French) was attentive but didn't hover was charming. The food was excellent and the chief, whom I would love to meet some day, accommodated a few special requests. The only thing I would warn people of is the parking situation. There is no dedicated parking and patrons must use valet parking at the bank next door after bank hours or try their luck on a nearby side street or a shared lot on the back of the block which has no direct access."

  • "We had a great experience with a group of friends. Everyone enjoyed all the items we ordered and everything was well presented. One highlight was our server, Yogev. When my wife inquired about the characteristics of two wines, he admitted not being familiar with them and had the manager come over to offer some insight. I found this to be a sign of excellent service. So often a server will just make something up or recommend the more expensive bottle. Overall a wonderful evening."

  • "As always, an enjoyable mean in a favorite restaurant. The only drawback is the noise level downstairs, but not much that can be down about that. Quieter upstairs away from the hustle and bustle of late night diners."

  • "very good food, excellent atmosphere (can have a conversation), a bit pricey by not outrageously exhorbitant price tag."

  • "Everything was great! Two people in our party do not eat sauces and the chef respected that. The fish order was delicious! My greatest complaint with all Houston restaurants is the heavy sauciness, salt, fat and calories. I do realize it is a restaurant however we all appreciated the lower sodium, lower fat, and none of us felt over stuffed. We will be back as regulars and live in the neighborhood. Oh, and the soufflé was great too. Thanks."

  • "We've dined at Max & Julie's several times, and the food is consistently good. The boeuf bourguignon was hearty and filling and I was glad to have leftovers to take home with me. But by far my favorite thing on their menu is the cauliflower gratin. I could make a meal just out of that! It's creamy and cheesy and delicious."

  • "Was new for me and wanted to try for a while, tend to eat late being frm Europe and 9 pm being my prime time to eat. Whilst being tousted as French it is not really and was not what I expected, very quiet, only 5 tables occupied when entering adownstairs and only 1 when finishing. Hostess left before we were served our main course. Maybe just wrong timing but wait staff mostly in jeans and seemed little ambiance however food itself was good, not fatastic but for me it is special to eat out and looking for something more lively, buzzing so disappointed overall as a night out. So just depends what you are looking for as this was Saturday night."

  • "Food is excellent as always. Service is pretty good, and they gave us a nice table. The noise level was very high, but this is not the restaurant's fault, but the patrons. People just love to be loud."

  • "My first time there and it was fantastic. I never expected to get such a nice steak in a French Restaurant. Everything about the food was very nice. I will go back for sure. I have to check it out one more time to be sure!"

  • "Wife and I hit BM&J for a bite before a movie at the MFA. Bone marrow service was terrific. I had the veal sweetbreads, which were delicious and well-portioned."

  • "ate there eight times but had lunch there only once--the last time. The quality of the food is absolutely delicious without exception. service is very good except that at lunch the wait staff seems overworked but they still do yeomens service and rise to the occasion. extremely good wine list- the bread is to die for. the only negative I have is that it is rather noisy- not good for the romantics."

  • "I hadn't been here in two years or more. Not really sure why as this has always been a good place. I took an out of town colleague here this past Thursday and everything was great. My guest was thrilled. Great service, great food."

  • "We ate on the balcony on Valentine's Day. With the perfect weather that night. There's a large oak tree that helped isolate us from the city lights. I appreciated the fact that the menu didn't just have the same-old-same-old. I certainly felt that the food and atmosphere were worth the price."

  • "Great food, good service. We went with another couple and everyone enjoyed all of the items we ordered. The chairs are a bit uncomfortable (wood with no cushions), but overall a great experience and we'll be back."

  • "We had been taken to Max and Julie's by "Looper's" about a month ago and enjoyed it. Saturday night we took our friends from the 'burbs in for a night out and everyone was very impressed and worth the 25 mile trek. Service, food, etc were outstanding. Strongly recommend this resturant."

  • "As soon as we walked in, we were immediately greeted, the restaurant wasn't even full to our surprise which of course is always better than waiting too long for a table. Once seated we waited more than 10 minutes for our seats, we kept each other company and eventually flagged down a server. Greeted by a sloppy server, wrinkled shirt, twisted tie, flipped up collar . We had trouble.placing orders throughout the night. The only thing decent for dinner was the sear fois gras special, and aside from that, sweet bread veal was not good, lamb not good, cauliflower was ok, dessert was not great, and the charcuterie plate was sliced to thick but decent. We were not happy with our overall experience."
