Diner Reviews
  • "Everything was perfect from the Onion Soup, to the Skate Wing with Capers and Croutons, to the Floating island. Service was superb. I will be back."

  • "Our table of 5 was quite well served by our waiter. However, a neighboring table overwhelmed the staff by gradually going from a table of 4 to 12. People were slowly adding to the table and our waiter had to give it his full attention. People at that table were simply bringing extra chairs to the table. Mentioned this to the manager and, while she was pleasant, did seem to understand the management problem created for her staff and other customers. The people at the other table were quiet, not causing any kind of scene but oblivious to others around them. The food, as always, was creative and the service - for most of the evening - was good. We left and went to another place for dessert."

  • "Food and wine were fantastic. The restaurant did get hot with the door open however."

  • "upon arriving they sat us at a table for two. We quickly realized that we were actually on opposites ends of a long triangle and were having difficulty hearing each other. We were set to tough it out but a large group with rambunctious kids were sat directly next to us. The kids were uncontrolled and kept bumping into us. The waitstaff accommodated us at a new much nicer table which was far more intimate. Our waiter was knowledgeable and helpful. Loved the food."

  • "Weather permitting.... Excellent service and cuisine. Pleasant ambience. Great for mid-week dinner occasions."

  • "Great French fare. Only dissapointment was the chocolate chip bread pudding, which was EXTREMELY heavy. I've never seen bread pudding served as slices of a loaf before, with components so well blended, they're unidentifiable from each other--perhaps it's the French way of making it?"

  • "In typical French restaurants I've been to, the entrees don't include sides, but you can order sides separately to share for the table. We assumed it would be like this, and ordered the cauliflower au gratin - that side came just as we expected it, and was wonderful. However, our entrees came with delicious potatoes and vegetables, so we wound up having too much food. This isn't a complaint at all! Just a warning. The food was amazing."

  • "Dessert is the best. Food portion seems a little bigger than I expected."

  • "celebrating 2 birthdays and the service was awesome. the staff made our evening even more special by being so attentive to our needs and wishes "

  • "I must have driven past this restaurant at least 100 times without having tried it. We were looking for something new [to us] for the weekend and made our reservation. Starters included luscious looking tomato salad as well as a very tasty crawfish cake [easily enough to share unless you're really hungry]. For entrees, our group chose the beef bourguinon, the steak au poivre, the lamb and the snapper special of the day. Most of us were too full for dessert, but one ordered the profiteroles, which looked really good. The wine list is entirely French and we found a really good and really reasonable Cotes du Rhone to accompany our meal. We will definitely return--maybe on an evening where the patio is a pleasant option."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for a special night out as I had not been here for about a year. We showed up a little early for our reservation and were seated right away. We had an excellent table and it looked to be very promising night out. Then we waited...and waited. We did not get drink orders taken for 30 minutes. Two tables sat near us about 20 minutes after us, ordered and were served their main courses before we could get the waiter to acknowledge us sitting there and take our order. Food was terrible just to top things off. I will never go back again. "

  • "What a wonderful find! We could not get a reservation at Brasserie 19, and I am so glad that we didn't! This place is EXCEPTIONAL - hostess, bartender, waiter, Sommelier - every interaction was pleasant and helpful. The food was INCREDIBLE! I don't live in Houston, but the next time I am there this restaurant will be at the top of our list! It was truly a wonderful, magical evening!"

  • "This a great french restaurant with phenomenal food and pretty good staff. The restaurant does not seem to have proper AC so it can get a little warm. While I would recommend this for any occasion they really pack you in during a holiday like mother's day so it gets a bit noisy. "

  • "We arrived at 1:15 on Sunday, only to realize that the crepes and waffles arrived at 2:45 PM. So sad that the meal could not even compete with IHOP. "

  • "Went to this restaurant for Mother's Day with sisters and mom. Wow! We will never forget this visit because they make you feel special in every way and you get to enjoy fresh French food! What a nice surprise for all of us!"

  • "Really enjoyed Mother's Day brunch. The French influence is very authentic. This is a nice little gem for Houston."

  • "Very authentically french. We had a lovely dinner. The only problem we had was that it service was a little slow (Mother's Day weekend so I assume it was because they were very busy) "

  • "This was our first time and it won't be our last! Very friendly service, good menu (although strangely absent were escargots) and the food well-prepared. One of the very few places where you CSN enjoy a soufflé. There were a few minor missteps in the preparation but all was corrected."
    Dined on 5/4/2014
  • "Food very good; good variety; sensible portions; fair prices. Extensive (all French) wine list at reasonable prices. No liquor license - just wine & beer. Pleasant outdoor dining in the right weather. Very professional service."

  • "I made late reservations to this restaurants after my wife and I decided to try a new restaurant. I checked the menu and it looked interesting. We were promptly seated and attended to by a variety of staff. The sommelier was very helpful in suggesting a great champagne at a very reasonable price. Our waitress was very helpful in making suggestions to my wife to try the special of the day. Our food arrived at the right time and it was delicious. Both items selected were flavorful and cooked to perfection. My next visit will be brunch to take advantage of the outside patio views."

  • "We had not been to this restaurant in quite some time. We were in the mood for french food and knew we would not be disappointed. Great evening with friends."

  • "I was attracted to Brasserie Max & Julie by its Wine List (a shorter version of that of its sister Restaurant, Rabelais), and the fact that they take reservations (unlike Rabelais). We arrived at 10 P.M., and enjoyed an excellent, unhurried meal (leaving about midnight) along with a White Chateauneuf du Pape (impossible to find at Specs, et al.) As 'newbies' to Houston, we were delighted to find a French restaurant to which we will return frequently."

  • "Whenever we visit Houston we try to find a way to eat here. A true French restaurant with a great wine cellar. Worth the drive from Austin. "

  • "Excellent all around. Best rib-eye I have ever had. My wife's chicken was cooked perfect. "

  • "Our table was on the first floor, I believe there is a second level too. Loved the ambiance. My husband and I liked that they had table cloths on the tables. My husband ordered a beef dish, stew I think and it was excellent. I ordered the trout and it was good, but not the best I've ever had. They had a nice wine selection. All in all, I would be inclined to go back to this restaurant. "

  • "Our group of 11 for lunch enjoyed the experience. Most had the daily lunch special which was a very good value. Service was good. The only disappointment was the carafe wines - not a good value. Better to choose a low-priced bottle or choose from he "by-the-glass" list. My wife and I look forward to returning to enjoy other menu items and the extensive wine list."

  • "Good place to eat dinner with your date. I ordered beef burgundy. The meat was tender, except for a few larger pieces. The fish was delicious."

  • "I had the catch of the day (snapper) and my wife had the salmon from the menu. Both meals were delicious, perfectly cooked and seasoned, and well presented. We had the Max and Julie salad for a starter which was also good. The bread served and one of the best crumb and crust ever with good flavor. I selected a white Burgundy from the wine list that was discussed with the Sommelier and confirmed as an appropriate selection for pairing with our meal. We finished the meal with a light dessert. Food and wine service were spot on. We dined on the patio which was nice since the jasmine was blooming. The was an occasional loud car or motorcycle passing by, but that only lasted for a few seconds. All-in-all, a great dining experience."

  • "Dinner on a nice evening on the outdoor terrace was even better than I had expected. The waitress was excellent, just the right amount of attentiveness and advice without hovering. She consulted with the so mailer to recommend a reasonably priced wine when I described what I liked, since I am totally ignorant of French wines and it was terrific. The seared tuna steak was to die for, vegetables cooked just right in a light sauce. Walked home on a nice evening to make the perfect Friday night out with my husband."

  • "I really enjoy Max & Julie. Been here several times. We dined on the porch today and the weather was glorius. Food is always excellent. Everyone in our group enjoyed it. The wine is very good at a good price. I like the option to dine casual on the porch or with white table cloth inside. "

  • "We met old friends for an alfresco dinner on a warm evening. The tables outside are a little small for 6, but great for 5 or less. The salmon steaks were excellently cooked to order from a perfect medium to medium well and delicious. I would go there to eat the salmon again. The beef tenderloin was melt-in-your mouth. On grilled items, diners choose one of several sauces offered and a side. Everyone raved about the sauce they chose and the vegetable side was cooked to a perfect tender-crisp. The wine list offers many French selections by both the glass and the bottle. They also serve European beers, but no bar. All servers are French and provide very good service. Can't wait to go again."

  • "The pate de campange was excellent. My wife's trout and my halibut were perfectly prepared and delicious. A nice pinot gris from the Alsace was a good accompaniment. Finally, we chose the special raspberry souflee and the profiteroles for our desserts - both were scrumptious. Can't wait to return. Oh yes - the service was knowledgeable, friendly and with just the right amount of attention."

  • "I had not been to Max and Julie's Brasserie before and what a treat it was. The food was full flavored and really delicious. The French onion soup was amazing along with the beef bourguignon. I will definitely visit them again."

  • "I've been to Max and Julie's a few times and always been pleased. The food choice is good, with some exceptional items. I had the "os à moelle " which was a bone cut in half longways - simply excellent if you like that sort of thing. Take a look at the menu on-line and if you like French fine dining then I'd expect you to find something you would enjoy."
