Brasserie Max & JulieLoved itThis was our first time to try this place. My boyfriend had heard good things about it so we had high expectations. Those expectations were met!
I think we got one of their senior serving staff as he was French and full of information about all the dishes. He even offered us an off the menu fish dish for 2 ( that we didn't bite on ). I had the special which was a grilled halibut and my boyfriend had the salmon - both were great. The cauliflower gratin was yummo too!
We will definitely go back. (BTW: the french onion soup was very good but includes a big hunk of bread that was too much).5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMWhy do I need a title?I liked it very well. A bit noisy/busy, but to be expected on Mother's Day. The food was classic French and very good, the wine was also very good.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMTres Bon!This chic little restaurant is cozy and warm. They offer an extensive menu of delicious french selections. The pate is perfect and the "Floating Island" is irresistible!5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMGood EatsFood was very good. Oysters on half shell very small (from Virginia). they should buy Texas oysters. Lamb excellent, but I am accustomed to having 3 or 4 on the plate from high quality restaurants, not 2. Duck was excellent. Fish Daily special very good. I liked the fresh green vegys rather than usual high carbs (rice, potatoes, pasta). Ambience early in evening (6pm) nice, but as evening continued, noise level increased so that it was difficult at times to carry on conversation at table. Wait staff very good and gave good suggestions on food selections and wine. Probably better for adults versus "family" with small children.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMMax and Julie always a winner!I have dined here at least six times in the past year and it is always delicious. The warm bread placed on your table is wonderful, crunch crust, warm soft on the inside. I especially like the boeuf bourguignon - what I call the French version of Yankee Pot Roast or probably vice versa. The portion is huge and the carrots are fresh and the beef so tender. Brunch is also very good. I had soft boiled eggs and shaved country ham with arugula. It was delicious and only $7.95 or so! I love to sit outside on the deck - especially upstairs. I go here with friends often just to sit outside and sip wine and eat wonderful French food. Highly recommended.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat dinner1st time at Max & Julie and was not disappointed Good location great food and wine selection. What we ordered was served perfectly and was very enjoyable will definitely return. Wish there was a bar selection but not a deal breaker.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect everytime.Great food everytime, perfect date night place with that special someone.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMSecond time to go! And, the food is always very, very good!4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMFloating Island dessert! So few restaurants have Floating Island on their menu. This one does and I loved it!4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Hidden International GemEntire party of 4 enjoyed excellent steaks and seafood. Our German visitor enjoyed the food so much he took a restaurant business card to give to his brother who now lives in the Houston area. The extreme compliment to the quality offerrings of this fine restaurant! A hidden gem in the Montrose area.4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMThey were really nice aboutThey were really nice about the mixup as somehow my reservation for two became a reservation for 12. No hassle for me whatsoever. I loved sitting outside for brunch. We stayed 2 1/2 hours!!!!4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMI am a frequent bruncher hereI am a frequent bruncher here due to the excellent ambiance and food; however, I have been disappointed in the service for the last few visits. We had to ask for water and a place setting four times, we had to ask to have water glasses refilled and it was at least 10 minutes before our server greeted us. The place was not crowded at the time. I want to continue patronizing max & julie and am willing to give it one last chance but if there is no improvement in service, I am inclined to find a new place to brunch.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMI had a wonderful experienceI had a wonderful experience at this local jem. Definitely will go again.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is becoming one of myThis is becoming one of my favorite restaurants in Houston. Must try!4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMexcellent service: attentiveexcellent service: attentive and knew the menu, she recommended the carafe of wine which we thought was a bargain at $15. Steak au poivre and duck were excellent.4/2/2013 12:00:00 AMMy husband and I had brunchMy husband and I had brunch at Max & Julie on Easter Sunday. We had a very enjoyable experience at an extremely reasonable price. They offer a white tablecloth experience without the stuffiness of some restaurants. We will definitely go back to Max & Julie.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMI have been here a coupleI have been here a couple times and both times have been very nice. I would recommend this place to anyone. Their brunch is great and priced well.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways a pleasure especiallyAlways a pleasure especially on a nice evening sitting at the upstairs deck. Sit upstairs deck or outside for a more quiet dinner; inside can get a little loud sometimes.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMSarah was wonderful and friendly.Sarah was wonderful and friendly. Soup du jour: cauliflower soup with tarragon - surprisingly bad. Selection of wines - great.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is a charming small restaurantThis is a charming small restaurant with a fairly typical brasserie type of menu.We both had the fish special, whole roasted branzino which was delicious. There is a good selection of moderately priced French wines. Our waiter, Jonathan, was very good.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful dining experienceI've eaten twice at Brasserie Max and Julie. It is a special occaison place..i.e. pricey, especially if you order wine..but it is worth it. Both times our service was excellent: attentive without being cloying. The wine list is excellent, and we have especially appreciated that the list features several nice half bottles. The menu has a nice range which includes traditional French dishes. The desserts are worth writing home about. Just had the best bread pudding I've ever had in my life. It was amazing. Rather than being presented with a mushy affair, I was presented with a ever so slightly crunchy bread (croissant?) concoction with chocolate sauce and blueberries. Wonderful. Will go here again next time I'm in Houston.3/12/2013 12:00:00 AMMy wife and I and a friendMy wife and I and a friend ate here following ushering for a matineeat the Alley Theatre. Our friend and I enjoyed the special, grilled swordfish over green beans and roaster potatoes. It was excellent, although a little pricey at $32. We had not, however, inquired about the price when we ordered it. My wife had the Cassoulet which she said was good but not great. My wife and I split an excellent salad and we all shared a very good bottle of J M Crochet Sancerre. It was a very good meal and we will certainly return again.3/9/2013 12:00:00 AMI love Brasserie Max & Julie!I love Brasserie Max & Julie! It's a cute little French restaurant that never disappoints. I also really like that they take reservations.3/3/2013 12:00:00 AMEnjoyed the meal and wouldEnjoyed the meal and would recommend. The menu is very creative and though the service is spotty the restaurant is worth a try. A note is the desserts are worthy of a trip.2/21/2013 12:00:00 AMAs Good As It GetsThe food was as good as it gets at a moderately priced fare. The service was very good as the drink glasses never approached being dry. The ambiance of the older interior actually added to the charm of having a subperb meal with excellent service. This is one of Houston's secret gems!2/8/2013 12:00:00 AMWhy didn't I think of it sooner? We were very happy to be able to book our Sunday brunch at Brasserie Max & Julie. I was looking through the list when I couldn't decide on where to take my out-of-town guests and when Brasserie Max & Julie came up I booked right away. As anticipated, my guests were delighted.1/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWe've been here twice in theWe've been here twice in the past two months, and each time the food and the service have been wonderful.
