History
Established in 2012
Cooking with beer! This concept is nothing new to Belgians who have
intrinsically mastered the flavors that come from cooking with local ales.
Pairing these culinary works with some of belgiums 1000 beers has been the envy of it's neighbours. We offer traditional Flemish ( Western Belgium ) favourites as well as the famous Moules & Frites in a cosy brasserie surrounded by the restaurants inspiration ,Belgiums most brilliant Surrealist artist Rene Ma

Diner Reviews
  • "One realizes why Belgian fare has not swept the world after eating here. It's basically peasant food , no matter how you dress it up: stews, boulliabaise, chicken, etc all served with thick fries and beer. One might describe the food as "clunky". It was prepared without much flair or interesting flavor. Chicken was tough and unseasoned, boulliabaise was a pile of small mussels and a few scallops and shrimp steamed excessively with potatoes in a fish broth that was largely flavorless, stew was likewise-potatoes and some meat in a dull presentation, similarly the hunters pie. The restaurant has a large variety of interesting artisanal beers, many more expensive than the bottles of wine. For the food quality, this one is overpriced."

  • "Delightful lunch at Magritte. Love the decor: reproductions of Magritte surrealistic and humorous paintings. Belgian-inspired menu, warm atmosphere, obviously a neighborhood favorite. Now one of ours, also!"

  • "Awesome little Magritte themed restaurant with sky painted ceilings and quirky hat lamps. The music was lively and the brunch was delightful. They served warm croissants or brioche buns with our entree and kept the mimosas, bloody mary's, wine, and beer flowing as long as our plates were on the table. Our waiter was very pleasant and did not skimp on extra baked goods. I will definitely be coming back to sample their extensive beer selection and to try their Belgian waffles!"

  • "The food was excellent and the atmosphere was wonderful. The food was slow in getting to us (3 hours total for drinks, apps, dinner, and dessert). The server was gracious and knowledgeable. The wine list is minimal, but they have a wide selection of craft beers and a full bar. Despite the slowness, we weren't in a rush and I would go back if I'm in this part of town."

  • "My mom and I went to brasserie magritte on Monday night. The atmosphere is warm, cozy, and inviting. The wait staff could not have been more attentive. Even though it was our waiter's first week, and it was obvious he was nervous, he did an outstanding job. I cannot remember the last time I was treated with such respect! The food is superb. I personally do not know much about Beglian fare, but it was beyond delicious. I had tender, moist roast chicken served with crispy french fries and a side salad. My mom had the braised lapin (rabbit) - which was equally as good. I am a personal lover of contemporary art, so the fact that this restaurant is covered with Magritte's surrealist paintings simply adds to the charm. I will be back :)"

  • "Dined here with a group of friend and we all enjoyed. The portions are large and very filling but very tasty and go well with the many varieties of Belgian beer available both draft and in bottles. Fun spot!"

  • "wished the mussels were cooked better, the random raw one was kind of unexpected and not tasty. the owner could have come by and said hello. otherwise, it was a pleasant experience, nothing to write home about."

  • "This was my 4th or 5th time here for dinner and every time has been great...with friends, adult children and most recently with my husband. Waiters who are personable and fantastic food. Magritte is relatively new to the neighborhood in the middle of a nondescript block and it has clearly caught on with Saturday evening's dinner crowded and lively. On the drink side they specialize in beer which is different and fun. I had roast chicken w/ Belgian fries and my husband had the salmon w/ pesto pasta, we ordered brussel sprouts as a side, all perfectly prepared. Feel lucky they are in the neighborhood."

  • "This has become a favorite neighborhood spot for terrific food, friendly service, in a comfortable setting. The food, accent Belgian, is interesting well prepared and served by a helpful courteous staff. This was one of multiple visits and there will be many more. Cot is reasonable. Value is certainly there."

  • "Mixed experience at Brasserie Magritte. Lovely ambiance and most attentive waitstaff. Duck was outstanding. Shrimp croquettes were less than mediocre with minimal shrimp evidence. Berry tart was cloyingly sweet. Mocha latte had thick chocolate syrup not blended with coffee. An expensive meal with only one excellent course needs immediate attention."

  • "This neighborhood spot is lively, cheerful and welcoming. The food Belgian and French lives up to expectations. Generous portions of well prepared mussels always satisfy. Carbonnade Flammande just the thing on a wintry evening. This is a restaurant with a generous heart."

  • "On the waiter,s suggestion, I ordered the Hunter's pie----mine did not have the variety of game as advertised, few pieces of tough venison and lots of chicken---over glorified chicken pot pie. Maybe it was and off night. Beer was great and so was the service. I would try again and go for another dish."

  • "recommend it during the week but not on a weekend with a full house. Reservation 7:45, arrived 7:50, they finally bought us a drink at 8:30 after several "10 mins more" comments, sat down at 8:50, apps came quickly, entrees not until 9:40. And then they had the drinks they bought for us on the tab. Now I have been here before mid-week and it was an excellent experience and I will go back, but I won't touch it on a weekend again. I will also give them the benefit of the doubt on the apparent drink charge in error. So you know the food must be pretty good if I will go to these lengths."

  • "We didn't know what to expect but were pleasantly surprised. Dined here on a snowy night with another couple and settled into a comfy booth. Our accommodating and capable waiter offered on-target beer, cocktail and food recommendations and we all enjoyed what we ordered. We look forward do a repeat visit."

  • "With so few options near the Metropolitan Museum, Brasserie Magritte is a more than decent spot for lunch or dinner. To be clear, this rating is based only on drinks and light fare. The Wild Mushroom Beer Soup was beyond delicious and worth many return trips. But when the Belgian Fries with Two House Sauces had to be returned to the kitchen to be crisped and the sauces turned out to be just ketchup and mayo (yes, mayo is traditional, but are either a "sauce"?), high hopes were lowered. Other dishes were fine, but not memorable. Still, the decor is attractive, the seating is comfortable and the service is nice, so there are certainly reasons to dine here."

  • "This restaurant has the ability to make you feel as though you're in another country, not New York and certainly not the upper east side. For a few comfortable hours the ambience, decor, waiters, take you away from it all. The food is creative & good, I had the Coq au Vin. It was delicious. Many of the waiters speak several languages and since i was with someone that does as well it was a amusing. Overall a nice experience."

  • "Excellent experience from start to finish. Many items on menu look intriguing; excellent old fashioned to begin; perfect beer pairing with the Belgian beef stew was recommended. We will be back to try some of the other dishes shortly."

  • "The service was very slow and erratic. Along with most of the food was served warm not hot. Plates were hot to the touch but not the food on them. I assume he food sat too long on the line for pick up."

  • "Making a reservation here might guarantee you a table, but only for the worst table, right by the door, on a night when the temperature was in the teens, with nothing between our table and the door except a curtain that didn't quite stretch far enough. I had to eat a $65 meal while wearing a coat. We asked to move, to another vacant table. Nope. That table was specifically reserved for other people, who didn't arrive for 30 minutes. We were not given the option of waiting a few minutes for another table. This is my 2nd time eating here, 2nd time being treated as a second class diner. Never again. The table next to us sported a reserved sign when as well. Those lucky people never arrived. The food's not amazing, other options abound."

  • "A wonderful addition to the Upper East Side. Good food, paired with friendly, attentive service - unlike so many other restaurants in the neighborhood! An expansive menu offered lots of choices for everyone in our party."

  • "On a cold winters night the meat pie with vennison and boar was delicious and hearty. The pate on the top was too hard but just we just ignored and left to the side. The confit of duck was terrific as were the shrimp croquettes. The bar made a very nice Manhattan, and for the next time all those Belgian beers await. It is as easy as a brasserie should be and, at the same time ,serving very well prepared food."

  • "The only glitch about this lovely spot is that they don't serve bread, and when a guest asks for bread, three or four, cold, small pieces of toasted baguette are brought to the table on a plain plate. When the bill arrives, there is a charge of $3.00. This has happened several times, including to my party of 6 on New Years Eve, despite my complaining about it.. Otherwise, Magritte is delightful."

  • "Too expensive for what it is. Very overpriced. Had 2 glasses of wine, 2 appetizer salads, one salad, and a small soup. The bill was $90. Outrageous!"

  • "We recently visited Brasserie Magritte for the second time and had another wonderful experience. This time we brought friends who were visiting from Vermont who are both big beer lovers - the wide selection of Belgian beers was a big hit! Our server Gerald was very knowledgeable and able to recommend the perfect beer for each course. The food, service and ambiance were all wonderful - in addition, I had requested a specific table for the five of us which the restaurant was able to accommodate as well. All in all a memorable evening - I highly recommend Brasserie Magritte!"
