Diner Reviews
  • "We had an excellent dinner in this classically French restaurant. The service was attentive, without being overbearing and our waiter was very helpful with his knowledge of how food was prepared, suggestions on wine selection, etc. Looking forward to going back!"

  • "Good food, good prices, good service in a romantic authentic French brasserie setting! As lose to being in the real thing as you can get from this side of the Atlantic."

  • "Wonderful restaurant with great food, outstanding service and overall decent atmosphere. Loved the fois gras mousse and the steak tartare."

  • "The food was great, the service was grand, and the wine list was excellent! The waiter was very, very helpful since we had a theater engagement afterwards. The table was held for us - the traffic was horrible - didn't focus on opening day at Fenway Park for the Red Sox."

  • "Our dining experience @ Brasserie Jo is sometimes wonderful- this time, not so much. Our waiter left us alone far too long to order. Our appetizers- smoked salmon and also escargot- were wonderful; however, the entrees of steak and fish were quite bland, and my husband felt his steak quite tasteless. We chose not to order from the fixed price menu. Finally, we ordered the profiteroles to share for desert- our favorite; instead, we were brought a large, bland cream puff. Something has changed with the cuisine, and it is not an improvement. One pleasing note; we returned after our show in pouring rain and the valet found me waiting in the lobby to let us know that our car would be next. Great service from him!"

  • "They should cut down on their portion size. It was way too much food. When I took the extra food home, the container was closed tight and there was spillage."

  • "Well... breakfast really. We had a lovely Sunday morning here. Delicious waffles and French toast with real maple syrup and fresh berries. The service was friendly and timely. Overall a solid spot for a nice meal."

  • "The soup and entree were OK - nothing great. The dessert was really goof though. Service was a bit slow - lunch took about an hour and half."

  • "When shown our table, I asked if we could be seated away from a crying baby, the hostess indicated that it would be bothers, and we would have to wait until she could find us another table. BAD START After getting a quiet table (I was with three friends), the waitress seems as if it was important to get us out of the restaurant quickly. When asked to repeat the specials for the day, she said "I already told you once." Then, later when asked the ingredients of one of the dishes I was thinking of getting, she seems it would be chore to find out what was in the dish. My friend has dietary restrictions."

  • "Had the 3-course tasting menu... wine pairing were excellent... appetizers (rabbit pate and beef cheek crepes) were good, but not as flavorful as we'd hoped. The venison entree was excellent (served in a puff pastry), but the arctic char was just serviceable... again, not enough flavor. The orange creme brûlée was excellent, but the frozen mousse "parfait" (not served in a parfait glass, but rather as a frozen cup of mousse upended on a plate) was just ok. So overall a bit uneven. Service was good, although the waiter took a bit too long in coming to take our dessert order, almost making us late for the theater, and seemed a bit huffy when we gently indicated we were in a hurry."

  • "Have been here numerous times and they are always good, even during fixed-price restaurant week. They provide a taste of what makes them a very good French brasserie and why we keep coming back"
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "Once he took our order, we never saw our waiter again, only the people clearing the dishes. Though we asked them to pass on our request for another bottle of wine, nothing ever happened. We won't be going there again."

  • "This is a very good French Restaurant in the high energy Back Bay Area. The atmosphere is inviting, the service is good, send the food is excellent. I had the crispy sweetbread for appetizer and the Duck for my entree. Neither one disappointed. The duck breast was cooked to perfection and worth coming back for I definitely recommend to all"

  • "Because of a severe Red Line (subway) delay, we had little time for dinner before the play we were to attend. Alerted the staff to this, and they really went out of their way to get our drinks and meal on time, unobtrusively. So, even thought we were in a rush, we didn't feel that we were. The restaurant is one of our favorite pre-theatre favorites. Love, love the bread and the carrots with horseradish that begin every meal there. For our main, I had a beef bourguignon-type dish, which had tender fall-apart beef chunks, and my husband had a very tasty steak frites, done perfectly."

  • "Menu and service are superior. Great restaurant over-all. CHALLENGES: Open table reservations are accepted however Open Table gift certificate is NOT ACCEPTED-BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. Also, Brasserie Jo DOES NOT validate parking in the garage of the Colonnade Hotel where they are located. Another DISAPPOINTMENT."

  • "Nice for before symphony dinner - ask for a table not wedged in the middle if you want some privacy"

  • "Brasserie Jo is a wonderful pre- theatre restaurant! The efficient service makes it possible to eat an appetizer and an entree in a little over an hour! The Bibb salad appetizer is the best! The Boston lettuce is fresh and delicious, and the dressing is light and divine! I normally get the lamb, but this time, I tried the duck. It was tasty but a little chewy. My husband loved his stuffed sole."

  • "4 of us dine regularly at this restaurant prior to going to symphony and am not sure that we will return. The restaurant was very crowded and the staff could not keep up with the pace. In some cases what we ordered , we did not get and when we requested 1 dessert and a menu to choose another, we never saw our waiter again. We paid at the reception area as we needed to get to symphony and had I not checked the bill, we would have paid $59.00 for a glass of cremant!"

  • "Brasserie Jo has been around forever, and always delivers. My husband and I dine there prior to Symphony and Jordan Hall performances, and it never fails to satisfy. An authentic bistro with truly professional staff, it's a gem!"

  • "This place continues to satisfy, serving authentic, well-prepared Parisian fare with a bit of elan and an alert waitstaff. Nice French wines by the glass and a menu that includes the best skate wing in the city, traditional tartes flambee, a nice saffron-tinted fish stew, duck confit on salad -- all the greatest hits. Food is a good value for the quality and the locale, although their parking garage takes a big bite out of the wallet. One of the best choices for area around Symphony Hall and the Huntington."

  • "Service was good-attentive and gave us an extra loaf of their amazing bread-great French onion soup"

  • "The chicken coq au vin was superb, and the romaine salad had real anchovy slices. A good Cote du Rhone made for a very good meal. Our waiter was pleasant, professional, and attentive. He immediately inquired if we had a show to catch (we did). We are going back."

  • "As always, our food at Brasserie Jo was very good. Regrettably, on this visit, the service was not up to the standard of excellence we've come to expect. Our server was accompanied by a trainee; perhaps this distracted him. But we sat for extended periods without anyone stopping by. Our first course arrived well before our beverages did, and even our water glasses were empty. Bread arrived only after two requests. I often read how restaurateurs like OpenTable because it allows diners to enter special requests. Although I had noted that we were celebrating my husband's b-day and had 7:30 theater tickets, apparently -- given the unconcerned service and lack of any kind of acknowledgement re the b-day -- no note was made of ours."

  • "For convenience when attending the Huntington Theatre, we eat at Brassiere Jo. The meal is always delicious and then we enjoy a nice walk to the theatre."

  • "I had lunch on Sunday with a friend. We liked the restaurant, its atmosphere and service. Neither of us enjoyed the mushroom crepe, which resembled a folded over omelette instead of a French crepe. It was rich, filled and lathered with much too much sauce hollandaise - or whatever. We would have been satisfied to share one, instead of being overwhelmed by the calories!"

  • "It was only 6:15PM, and they were already out of sea bass and duck l'orange. The waiter was attentive at first. He asked if we would like to look at the dessert menu. It took him a while to bring it to us. After that, he disappeared. It got to be too late to order dessert as we had tickets for the Boston Symphony Concert. The maître d' finally took our bill & credit card and asked us to come back after the concert for dessert. We declined."

  • "Brasserie JO has become a go-to place for dinner when we want to leave our neighborhood and want reliable excellence. The atmosphere, food, service are all great. Enjoy!"

  • "Brasserie Joe always has a great ambience and service. Good for pre-concert or theatre dining if you have to get to Symphony or the Huntington. Food was very good. Service was great. Busy, so others must think the same."

  • "I've liked Brasserie Jo, but not this time. My friend ordered the hamburger--$19.95!--pricy but it sounded good. He ordered it medium rare. It arrived, quite some time later, well done. My friend complained and the waiter, with some reluctance, took it back. After a long wait, the waiter brought another well-done burger! The waiter thought my friend wanted it well-done. My friend was ready to give up, but the manager encouraged my friend to wait for another burger. And that third one was also well done! My friend ate it without liking it or complaining. We were charged for the burger, and late for an appointment. The waiter was incompetent and so was the kitchen. As we were leaving, another patron came over and shared a similar complaint."

  • "I've been dining at Brasserie Jo almost since its inception and really can't recall ever having a bad experience. This past Sunday evening was yet another example of this eatery's easy elegance and winning style. Our server Scott was engaging and helpful without being overly assertive. With his attention to detail (shared by the entire staff, as usual) and his great sense of humor he made sure that my San Francisco guest and myself enjoyed our reunion type dinner to the fullest. We sat at the exact table I had requested for well over three hours, enjoying expertly made Manhattans and tasty dishes. After all these years, for whatever occasion, Brasserie Jo continues to be a pleasure."

  • "Went downhill as restaurant filled up. We arrived early and we seated and allowed to order our drinks. Our waiter was very personable and helpful. Our food came in a timely way and we all enjoyed our dinners but as the restaurant began to fill up we had issues finding a server to order dessert. Things appeared disorganized as is got busier and we did not see our server again rather several different servers completed our service. We did have to ask several times for bread as well as our wine. I probably would return perhaps not on a weekend night. Also we observed it is quite an "older" clientele"

  • "As usual the food and service were superb. I tried the squash steak and Quinoa fritters. It was lovely. The wine was lovely. The profiteroles made a great finish."

  • "We went to Brasserie Jo for the first time last weekend for a St Valentine's brunch. This brasserie is really nice, with a typical atmosphere from parisian brasseries... the food is really good. I definitely recommend this restaurant for a brunch!!"

  • "Great atmosphere, and we had an amazing waiter. My only complaint was our food was slightly burnt and I took some to go and he put my salad and macaroni gratin in the same dish so I couldn't separate the two or heat it up. Had to throw it away what a waste."

  • "We often go here before Symphony and last night we were settled in for a good early dinner. Two of us ordered the Valentine special Lobster Bouillabaisse. Good presentation of a half lobster lying on it's side in a broth but when I flipped over the lobster it was an empty shell lying on top of 3 small pieces of white fish. There was a shred of lobster in the half tail but that was it! I paid almost $40 for a basically empty lobster shell, 2 littlenecks, a half dozen miniature shrimp and 3 small pieces of fish. With that said, it tasted good enough but was such a disappointment that it was hard to enjoy. We did not complain to the waiter but spoke to the maître d who went to the kitchen but never returned to explain. Other dinners good."
