A word from Brasserie Cognac
Restaurateurs Vittorio Assaf and Fabio Granato brought their love for French culture and cuisine to New York City by giving the Big Apple an authentic slice of France when they opened Brasserie Cognac de Monsieur Ballon in April 2008. Located in the theater district and frequented by celebrities, businessmen, locals and tourists, the setting is both exciting and charming. The Brasserie style menu offers French classics . Guests can choose to dine in the outdoor sidewalk café, casual original French bakery, classic main dining room, lively bar/lounge or the private Cognac Room as they enjoy meals complimented by 102 varieties of cognac and a gorgeous wine list including first-growth Bordeaux sold by the glass.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I had never been to this restaurant before but I'm now a huge fan. Great service. Lovely ambiance. And great food. I had the rotisserie chicken. I think it was the best chicken I've ever tasted. We went pre-theatre. Perfect. Will definitely go back."

  • "Had a business lunch here and service and food were excellent. My first time, so only had onion soup and beet salad; a bit skimpy on the size of this entree salad."

  • "I used to love eating at this restaurant -- their special chicken salad was the bomb! It's still good, but now you only get half the portion size they used to serve == and the salad is almost all lettuce and cabbage, so they aren't even saving that much money. It's a shame, really as I won't be coming back any time soon."

  • "Food is consistently good. Our favorite waiter, Ryan, is the best. He takes such good care of us - very attentive, polite, efficient. We are never disappointed."

  • "Terrific as always. Greeted promptly, nice table, service, food excellent. Price is fair. A must visit destination when coming to New York."

  • "We really enjoyed brunch at Cognac. Food was yummy and the atmosphere was fun. Great sunlight lit the space."

  • "We picked the restaurant because it was close to the theatre. This is a pleasant surprise and a gem. There was even a prix fix for the theatre. The onion soup was off the charts and every dish at the table looked amazing. I know need to go back to try each different entrée that arrived. The chef came out to watch a table side meal be prepared and started to talk with my family. He was so nice and between the food and service I can not praise this enough."

  • "We have eaten here many times. The food was great as usual but the service was horrible. We seemed to be lost between two servers. And neither one was attentive to our needs. Constantly had to flag down someone to get water, condiments, the bill. This is not the first time that we have received poor service, but it will be the last since we don't plan on returning."

  • "Good for pre-theater dinner. The restaurant is large but feels cozy because it is broken up into smaller areas. The menu has a nice variety of bistro dishes, from soups and salads to bigger meals. Wines are expensive."

  • "Can't be beat for pre or post Jazz at Lincoln Center. Not as pretentious or pricey as the eateries in the Time Warner Center, and lovely low key service. We've enjoyed brunch and dinners here, anytime we came; someone knows how to cook delicious French bistro fare and hopefully will continue."

  • "My last place for "NYC restaurant week 2013" was there. Some of friends recommended to go there, since they had nice experience there for lunch and sweet as well. Romantic, cut and friendly ambience. I love that place. If there is small place for one person for dinner, that would be great for me. I love there food, especially their "Floating Island "was a kind of sweets, which make your another stomach !"

  • "geared entirely to tourists. food was bland and overcooked (when I ordered my dish medium rare, the waiter said they cook everything fully through and don't take special orders for temperature, so we should have known). wine list was out of date and four of the five wines we ordered weren't available, so it took forever to get our order. waiter was pleasant but completely hapless. decor was complete kitsch. filled with tourists who were having a great time. we won't ever go back again."

  • "We like everything we ordered from the restaurant week menu. Like the taste and arrangement of wild cod and also dessert. The portion is no big but just enough for us. Will come back."

  • "Good for pre theater dinner if going to Carnegie Hall or City Center."

  • "Restaurant week menu, still felt hungry after three courses. Typical problem with French cuisine."

  • "Everything was great, really. The only thing that bothered me was the service. Our waiter was very friendly, however arrival of our dishes were less than satisfactory. Other than that, everything else was fine. Keep doing what you're doing, but you don't need a measly customer review to do that."

  • "Service was excellent. Portions were on small side."

  • "Warm welcome at the door! Great service -- helpful and NOT intrusive. Food is very good and predictably good. Able to talk with your dinner companions. Try the mussels, the fondue, the cheese soufflé."

  • "The host couldn't be bothered to smile. Our server seemed to have the same issue paired with an air about him that conveyed we weren't good enough to be dining at his service. The wine list was laughable, it included about 20 options and since we were sitting directly across from the bar we could see that these were not our only options. When we paid the bill(with cash and expecting change)he asked where we were from and, according to him, assumed we were tourists and proceeded to explain that the service was not included in the total, implying we weren't tipping him adequately. We were so shocked that this is how he would treat patrons that we paid and left but in retrospect we should have complained to the manager and are sorry we didn't."

  • "If you are a lover of french cuisine, you would enjoy eating here. The quality of the food is exceptional and the taste is just unforgettable. I recommend: Escargot Codfish and their amazing light Islands dessert."

  • "It's not always easy to find a local restaurant that has delicous food, reasonable prices, very good service and a casual yet chic ambience. The food is terriic...whether a cheese soufflé, hamburger & frites, or perfectly cooked salmon with lentils. I could eat there every day....breakfast, lunch or dinner. It's a proverbial neighborhood gem!"

  • "We often go to Brasserie Cognac before a concert, but every time we go there, we are reminded how unfriendly the waiters are. We like the ambiance and the food, but they have to work on training their waiters to be friendlier and more courteous. We like to walk out of a restaurant feeling like we want recommend it to our friends."
    Dined on 2/25/2014
  • "The food is pretty good, very authentic country style French food. I went during restaurant week, and it was rather crowded at lunch. That's probably why the service was a bit slow and noise level was a bit high."
    Dined on 2/23/2014
  • "The food overall is good. However, we waited for half an hour to get our entree and then another 20 minutes to get our dessert after we finished our entree. The service is not qualified for a restaurant like this."
    Dined on 2/23/2014
  • "I'm often not a fan of French, but the escargot was cooked perfectly, as well as the duck. The food was hot and orders were served at the same time. The waiters were very friendly and agreeable, and did not rush us by any means. A bit pricey, but worth the once-in-a-while visit!"
    Dined on 2/23/2014
  • "Authentic French Brasserie with delicious selections, great service with no attempt to rush the diner!"

  • "Came here for lunch during Restaurant Week Feb 2014. The décor has a French feel, with wooden paneling and café furnishings. The wait staff is attentive and polite. We tried the escargot and while good, there are other places in NYC that are better. The codfish was very good, but the floating island dessert was the most fun part of the meal. Brasserie Cognac is a nice eatery in the upper 50s west side, so I would recommend it for people looking for a meal in the area."

  • "Overall the food is great, just one dish is little salty."

  • "The food is good but don't count on the service. we requested 3 times for bread and 4 times for a wine list..... yes even a wine list.... we did not get it until we are done with the starter ...... you will think if you get a wine list, u should get it almost right away, but no, forgot it, i guess they dont want u to enjoy a glass of wine with your meal. and the resturant has maybe 4-5 tables with 3+ watiers around."

  • "I think it's sad when one eats at the same restaurant monthly and they have no idea who you are"
    Dined on 2/17/2014
  • "This restaurant is one of the least known great food places in its neighborhood. That's giod news for being able to make reservations and even walk-in service for brunch, linch or dinner. Try the Croque Monsieur or fikt mignon flamed with cognac."
