A word from Brasserie Beck
Chef/Owner Robert Wiedmaier of Marcel's opens a casual, contemporary brasserie named after his younger son. The stunning space features an open steel and glass kitchen visible from three sides, set across from a unique family-style chef's table, dramatic 22-foot ceilings and a raw bar located at the end of a grand marble and walnut bar featuring an array of Belgian beers on tap to complement his French Belgian fare.   • "Food was delicious as usual. Only real issue is that they let people smoke on the outdoor patio, which is disgusting and disruptive to dining. Our waiter kindly moved us to another table since they were blowing smoke in our faces. It really should not be allowed. Dessert was delicious."

  • "My wife and I went for a wonderful Saturday evening dinner at Brasserie Beck. They just debuted the new 'summer' menu, and we had items off that and a couple of the nightly specials. The shrimp ravioli, beet salad, sea bass and soup-of-the-day were just excellent. It was a late-July evening, so we had planned on eating inside. When we arrived, however, the weather was unexpectedly nice, so we asked to eat outside on the patio and BB accommodated us. We had recently returned from Greece and we described a cocktail we had in a fine restaurant overseas to our server. He relayed that info to the bartender, who created us a very good version. Not only was it tasty, but the effort really says something about BB."

  • "We've been here many times in the past and always had really great mussels. Unfortunately, this time was a disappointment as the mussels were incredibly small, more like clams. Not sure if it's the wrong season to order this shellfish, if so, they could have given us more to make up for the lack in size."

  • "The mussels and endive salad were excellent and lived up to my expectations from other reviews that I had read. I was there for a late lunch and the outside patio was very busy. I opted to be seated inside where it was busy but not crowded and pleasantly quiet with friendly, helpful, non intrusive service with a table in a very private little side area that was perfect for a solo lunch."

  • "The ambience was perfect for meeting up with friends and catching up. Tried the Palm Speciale beer and it was excellent. The raw oysters, grilled octopus, and Mediterranean style mussels were perfectly prepared and amazingly delicious. The Belgian frites were very good as well. The overall experience was very memorable."

  • "We enjoyed our appetizers and the beer draft selections very much. Our main course was slow arriving, excessively so. Classic mussels were nicely flavored, but had cream in the sauce. I never had it prepared that way in Belgium, so I wasn't expecting that. The steak was not very tender. The fries were good, and dipping sauces delicious. Overall, it was good, but not great. For the price of this dinner, I would try something else next time."

  • "I went with my friend while we were visiting DC after being recommended this restaurant by a friend. I thought everything was good just not great. My chicken was extremely low quality and I ended up not eating much of it. The brussels sprout had good flavor but were overcooked and my friends crab cakes Benedict are not at the top of my Benedict list. If you are in DC for a short time I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for brunch. If you live in DC, sure. The patio was nice and table side mimosas are always a plus."

  • "This was a great dinner! We started off with some wine, cheese, and mussels. The mussels were perfectly cooked in a tomato and chorizo broth, tender and juicy, and the broth so deliciously we used up all of our bread to sop it up! I ordered the seared spiced tuna, which was cooked to perfection. The star of my dish however was a basil, olive oil pesto-thing drizzled over the vegetables that came with it. I could eat that forever! My fiance got the special-lamb with fresh corn polenta. This is was the highlight of our meal. The lamb was slow braised in simple spices and was so juicy and melted in your mouth! You did not need a knife to eat it! The Creme Brulee was good, except for the black cherry compote underneath it, made it too sweet."

  • "We've recently moved back to Washington after living in Belgium, and have such fond feelings for it that we chose Brasserie Beck for a family birthday dinner. Although some of our favorite Belgian beers were not on the list, there is an excellent selection of Belgian and Belgian-style beers, as well as a very good wine list. The cuisine tends toward Belgian-french, but includes a nice variety of other items. I had a New york strip that was a dinner special, and it was prepared just right and was very good. The seafood selections we had were also great. A fine place for a nice evening!"

  • "The waiter named two specials when he came to our table and I thought they were both entrees but it turned out the first one, which was Duck, was just an appetizer. So to fill my meal, I also ordered the brussel sprouts. Both were very good. But what really made the meal was the Straffe Hendrik Bruges Tripelbier. It was really tasty. I'd definitely go back."

  • "I used to love Brasserie Beck, but lately it has been disappointing. This most recent visit might be our last. My husband's steak was overcooked, and while he was able to send it back, it was still just not very satisfying. My steak was tough and the bearnaise sauce was just a congealed mess. Given the price, I expect more from the experience. The frites and beer are still awesome, so this might just be a happy hour destination from now on."

  • "Stopped by for late brunch while walking back from the Capital. It was quite good. The chicken & waffles were very flavorful and well made. The breakfast sandwich was good but could've used more of the house cured bacon. Opted not to do drinks, but the "do it yourself" mimosas looked interesting but too expensive for 2 people. We'll return for another round next time we're in DC!"

  • "Had a late lunch reservation, my boyfriend and I have always wanted to come here and we finally decided to go. When we first got there the hostess greeted us, with a great smile and made us feel very welcomed. Our server was splendid, very attentive and made sure everything was going good, props to the manager who hired him. We order the classic white wine (full portion) and it was delightful the mussels were really good and the fries on the other hand are the BEST We would definitely recommend this place to a friend. We had an amazing experience at Brasserie Beck! We will be back soon!"

  • "I got the recommendation for this restaurant from a longtime bartender friend of mine who was going to work at one of the locations. First of all, I am really a fan of Belgium beer. The blondes, singles, triples and the QUADs! Well needless to say, they carry an array of them all. For this visit, we really just headed in for a late beer and some mussels which truthfully are expensive (for what they are), but delicious nevertheless. I will definitely be going back to this location for a happy hour."

  • "Had a late lunch reservation and the place was mostly empty. Service was terrible. Waited 20 minutes for iced tea to get delivered. Food was served 30 minutes after ordering and was dried out and cold. Have been there before and this was incredibly disappointing."

  • "This has been a long time favorite but our recent visit was redeemed only by outstanding service. Out waitress was able to get the chef to provide frisee salads that had disappeared from the menu. The pan of mussels was skimpy at best and not really a full serving. The cost for dinner was surprisingly high, given that we were eating moules frites. Yes the beer selection is good, but I might sate my belgian obsession elsewhere in future."

  • "We really enjoyed the outdoor dining experience here. The mussels and onion soup were both outstanding as appetizers! The main courses were the disappointment for us. The lamb porterhouse was almost all bone with very little meat and the sauces on all of our dishes were a little overwhelming. Our waitress had a bit of trouble staying focused. She almost hit 2 of us in the head with her tray and a menu because she was talking to another server while trying to serve us."

  • "A very inconsistent experience at Brasserie Beck. The hostess could hardly make you feel LESS welcome: barely looked at us, no greeting of any kind and when we asked if we could have a table on the terrace, it was obvious this was a chore for her... My wife and I both noticed it. Off to a very bad start... But the waiter almost saved it all: courteous, knowledgeable, quick, yet never overbearing. Appetizers were incredible! But the main course was questionable... The meat quality was very bad and the food was barely hot. Disappointing considering it was the priciest item on the menu. Deserts and coffee were perfect! But they were brought without utensils (not by our waiter, we then saw him point it out to the other members of service)."

At some moments he was rude....interrupting our conversation with dirty looks and harsh announcement that he needed to tell us the specials. The hostess and waitstaff also were not friendly (no smiles or manners). The food was good, but service was so poor that I don't think I'll return."
