Diner Reviews
  • "Food was excellent! I could tell they only use the freshest ingredients. I totally loved the mussels in Mediterranean sauce. The oyster po'boy was a little hard to eat with your hands. I just used the fork and spoon to eat it. My husband enjoyed his drinks as well. There were only 2 reasons I didn't give it a 5 stars - one is our server, we had to wait for a while and flag another server just so we could ask for our check. Second, the table we sat at was not balanced, one side dipped so we had to improvised by putting a folded napkin underneath one of the legs of the table."

  • "My wife and I hosted my son and his girlfriend for a Saturday dinner. My son and I enjoyed the chef's plate (a pork shank) and my wife liked the mussels. My son's lady friend had the beef carb and was disappointed with no starch came with the stew. She like the dish, but would have appreciated some potatoes, etc. My only downline on the service is our waiter seemed overstretched working the patio. We often ran out of water and had to wait for him to stop by. We will come again."

  • "I have been to more steakhouses than I can count, many of them the hightest rated in the country. Usually when I see a see a steak for two, it is a porterhouse. A special on the menu was a prime filet mignon for two, the only cut my daughter loves. It was magnificent. Maybe the finest filet I have ever had. Expertly cooked and beautifully presented, it was very special. I did not expect this at a brasserie but the level of expertise from this team of chefs (there are other restaurants owned by the same chef) is apparent. Thank you!!"

  • "Took a friend here while she was in town. We all loved it and would go back! Food was excellent, and the portions were good sizes. Definitely pricey, especially if you will be drinking."

  • "We met friends from out of town here for brunch before visiting museums. We had had a lovely time here several years ago and were not disappointed. The service is impeccable - not to much, not too little. The atmosphere is lovely. And the food - we tried the lemon souffle pancake (served in a cast iron pan that kept it hot the entire meal) and the Croque Madame ( Croque Monsieur with a poached egg on it). Wonderful. A great place for a brunch and to have a real conversation with old friends. "

  • "The food was so good my children, 9 and 12, were the quietest that I've ever seen them once their entree was delivered."

  • "I needed a place downtown where the food is good and 2 people could talk, and this was excellent for that. The server showed us to a quiet corner away from most of the other guests and was helpful with menu suggestions. The grilled octopus is fabulous as were the wild mushrooms."

  • "Brasserie Beck delivered a great meal to a couple that really misses the European food scene. Starting with an excellent Frisee salad and outstanding Charcuterie and moving on to fresh, meaty mussels and a Steak and Frites not seen since our last trip to Brussels. The meal is paired with an incredible wine list and draught beers not normally found on this side of the Atlantic. Service can be perfunctory unless you find a way to connect with your server."

  • "The service and the setting are absolutely wonderful. The wine list is amazing. The food was kind of just ok."

  • "food was horrible. Steak had more fat/grissel than real steak. Slow service. Not worth the price"

  • "After reading glowing reviews of Brasserie Beck, I expected a much better dining experience. Instead my husband and I were treated to mediocre service and both my appetizer and entree were tepid, not hot, when served. We then had a long wait before we were asked if we were interested in dessert. I think that we were finally presented with a dessert menu only because a waiter happened to overhear a remark we made. I don't think a return visit is in our future."

  • "Maybe I'm just not used to DC prices, but you're paying quite a lot for food which is just north of 'decent,' and to be ignored by your server for the majority of your meal. We were also celebrating a birthday, and never once did the server say 'happy birthday!' or offer any kind of dessert of drink on the house. Maybe I'm naive in assuming free stuff, but one free dessert isn't going to break the bank. Instead, I had to hunt down our server in order to order a 'secret' birthday surprise. Generally disappointed."

  • "My husband had the surf and turf. I tasted a bit of each and gave it a thumbs up. My dish, the skate wing, was over the top on salt - and I like salt. I would never order that again. Thumbs down for sure."

  • "My wife and I had a wonderful dinner, she had the mussels - amazing with a great sauce. I had the stewed beef it was good but the mussels had a deeper fuller flavor."

  • "Come here for the city's best mussels, but the seafood (skate) and beef (steak frites) are great too. Oh, and did I mention a nice selection of Belgian beer?"

  • "Went as soon as it opened at 11:30AM on Sunday -- it seemed they were a bit understaffed, since our server didn't come to out table that often. Also, took a while for our food to come out. I ordered a crabs benedict, which was great (and they poached the egg PERFECTLY, I hate when that doesn't happen). Overall, good experience, good location. Nice, open decor, and I'd love to sit outside next time."

  • "I've been to Brasserie Beck a number of times, and usually have had a good experience. Service has always been relatively slow, but Beck generally makes up for it with great food. We ate outside for brunch, but the entire patio seemed to be in a tizzy, with numerous customers leaving mid (or pre)-meal, and desperately flagging anyone who might pay attention to them. For us, it took 40 min. for anyone to help us, and it ended up being the poor hostess herself after she tried fruitlessly to send over 3 different, annoyed servers. Another 45 min. until our food came (which, surprisingly, was NOT good!), but still not our coffees. It took another 30 min. after we asked for our bill. We were only charged for our coffee, which was nice of them."

  • "but we asked for some assistance in choosing wine. The waiter said he would get the sommelier but he returned with a bottle of wine. It was the least expensive Pinot Noir-which is what I was looking at. I have never had that happen before. I was looking at more expensive bottles-but what was sent was fine. It was just weird!"

  • "Bigger and noisier than expected but a great, not overwhelming, mixed crowd of locals and refugees from the nearby hotels. Courteous staff had to hustle all night, no leisurely conversations about food and tourism tips. Great place to unwind after a day at the nearby Convention Center. Food surpassed expectations. Don't go if want to protect a weight loss diet. The mussels are special. As was the pumpkin soup. And is the list of Belgian beers.Very good first time. Room was a little chilly and I can see this would be very nice on a warm spring day or nice summer evening."

  • "I love the mussels at Brasserie Beck. Served in cast iron skillets, with fries. Try the Thai with coconut milk. Outdoor dining is best and I have suggested BB on many occassions. Can't wait for my next visit. The bar is also great for cocktails. See you there!"

  • "We started with tasty cocktails, a spicy sidecar and allspice martini. The crab gratin appetizer was to die for. Comfort food at its best served with brioche toast points. The Penn Cove mussels were excellent! What a treat to enjoy something other than PEI mussels. A Carmelites chocolate banana creme brûlée ended a fabulous meal! Highly recommended."

  • "We've been here four days and would have to say Beck was the best food we've had in downtown Washington. The price is also reasonable, so I would say it has good value and would recommend eating there."

  • "So this was my first date with a young lady and i was trying to impress her after a long week of work. While the restaurant was nice on the inside and food was good, the servers were not attentive. We had to wait 15 min to place our order and i had to speak to the hostess to get our drink orders. Our waiter was all over the place and we did not get the attention required for a 4 star restaurant. I am hesitant to come back. The food was tasty nonetheless."

  • "I went here for a professional business lunch. Perfect choice for that. Food was good, service is attentive without being over-bearing. The mussels were excellent. The tables aren't right on top of each other, which is nice - it is broken up into several smaller rooms. That helps to keep the noise to a minimum - it is not the kind of place where you have to shout to be heard - it is neither too quiet nor too noisy. Decor is a sort of a New York metropolitan vibe, but the menu has a lot of French influences. A solid, white tablecloth place. A fair number of suits at lunch but not quite as buttoned down as say Tosca."

  • "i've always been a fan of brasserie beck but recently its disappointed me twice. the food used to be really great and while it's not terrible, it's no longer really anything special. the menu isn't as interesting as it used to be. the service is good and the ambience is fun but it's just not the star it was. it's feeling a little tired to me."

  • "Food and service top notch it's crowded and noisy, with busy staff racing back and forth within inches of you. Not romantic but perfect for business meeting/client dinner."

  • "Unique restaurant just north of Metro Center metro. Great food with Belgium/French flare. However, be prepared for higher prices as our meal cost approximately $90 which included an appetizer but no drinks."
    Dined on 3/20/2014
  • "Classic mussels tasted of raw uncooked wine and should have been returned to the kitchen. On a previous visit they were completely tasteless. Not sure why the restaurant's specialty is so poorly prepared. Rest of the food was good. Service was good but somewhat overly aggressive."

  • "this place is great for mussels! they literally bring a big red pan of mussels to you to eat. the fries are great. only thing i wouldn't recommend is the Grand Bellini drink $12. It tastes like sour peach champagne and it is served in a very small glass. disappointing for the price. i like my drinks big."

  • "I moved away from DC in 1981 and the city has changed quite a bit. To celebrate my mom's 88th birthday I treated her to a dinner at Brasserie Bek and the service was fabulous. Living in NYC, I am completely unfamiliar with Chef Robert Wiedmaier and Ramon Narvaez, General Manager, was kind enough to provide us with the history of this chef, along with a description of the range of restaurants he's opened in DC. The food is very good but most dishes had just a bit over-the-top additions - this is a brasserie, where French food is of haute quality but should be basic and not fussy. This personal objection to some of the unnecessary additions won't prevent me from returning to this, or another Wiedmaier restaurant."
