A word from Brasserie Beck - Kentlands
Brasserie Beck is a contemporary European style brasserie in the "new urbanist" Kentland's community. The original location was opened by critically acclaimed, chef/owner Robert Wiedmaier in NW Washington D.C. in 2007. Wiedmaier stays true to his Belgian roots creating and cooking casual, affordable fare in the "brasserie style" of serving all day from lunch to late night. Beck is an ideal place for a quick meal anytime of the day; oysters from the raw bar, moules & frites with a trio of homemade dipping sauces, a Charcuterie Plate or the classic Belgian mainstay of Beef Carbonnade or Mountain Trout Amandine. Beck's stunning and spacious bar boasts the area's most comprehensive Belgian beer list outside Belgium with 17 draught beers and 150 offered by the bottle. This location also features an outdoor patio and sizable private dining space. We welcome everyone to the newest Brasserie Beck in Maryland.Continued

  • "Had my second dinner at BB and am impressed with the food. Consistently good food, very friendly staff, clean!"

  • "We went for brunch and the food was very good. Portions sizes were more than adequate. We sat outside and it was very pleasant on the patio. Our waiter, though a polite young man, really did not know the menu very well and could not tell us about the specials. He could not answer basic questions about the restaurants' offerings and rather than trying to find out and bring us the answer, he brushed off our questions and tried to persuade us to get something from the menu that he did know something about. He also overcharged us on the final bill. When we pointed it out, he did fix it, but overall I felt that his service was inattentive and cursory. With a better waiter, I think we would have enjoyed the experience more."

  • "Most everything was average except the food. Food was very good (not great) but way too expensive. The ambiance was not at all special - ordinary at best. We were seated 30 min after our reservation and as soon as we sat down, the table was dirty and an ant crawled up my arm. Service was disjointed and inconsistent."

  • "Amazing food and beverages!!! The lowest points are given to the service. Our server was on point, as well as the manager who came by a few times to bring us water and drinks. The bartender that evening was unwelcoming if you were a male customer and the drinks were slow to arrive at our table. The hostesses were rude and inattentive - we had to ask three times for our table since they kept forgetting about us. Which we are too baller to be forgotten about :-) We ended up seating ourselves in the bar. The hostess didn't care to ensure we had menus, napkins, or silverware (standard setup) which put the server a bit behind. Overall the food and experience were good, but for the price and caliber of the restaurant the service should be better."

  • "The restaurant started off good, but upon the most recent visit, we found that the staff was generally unprofessional and rude and the food that was so good the first couple times has now become mediocre. It's too bad, as the restaurant had potential to be good. One of the bartenders is so rude and full of himself, that it makes you wonder how he can keep his job."

  • "The food is generally well prepared, but the wait service needs improvement. A little on the expensive side; no youngsters here. Side spinach salad was very good ($100. Small, albeit well prepared halibut $27, large order of muscles (eaten as an entree) valued at $22, tasty pork loin $25. Server did not volunteer the specials until we asked, never offered a dessert menu, until we asked, and VERY slowwwwwwwwwww.... Shared the peach almond tart with a snall amt of ginger ice cream. Dinner for 3 plus tip $160.....a little high. Recommend sitting on the bench side of the table...the chairs are really not that comfortable (and more fitting for an outside cafe)."

  • "I really hate to do this, Our dinner Friday night was at best mediocre. First off we were seated next to a family with a two year old who had turned their table into a explosion of food and pablum, which is really appetizing when you think you are about to experience fine dining. The bread comes it is wonderful who knew it was going to be the high point of the evening. My wife's chopped salad OK, My shallot onion soup, bottom of the pot. She ordered swordfish, frozen, thawed and cooked to death, still mushy. and absolutely tasteless. My steak poivre with frites instead of garlic mashed potatoes was steak frites with fingerling potatoes. Waitress realized the mistake and told us it would be 20 minutes for replacement. She took it off bill"

  • "Took my wife here for our anniversary dinner and couldn't be more pleased. We are new to the area and were worried we'd have to drive to DC to find a nice restaurant. The food was delicious and the service was attentive, knowledgeable, and prompt. Definitely be sure to save room for dessert!"

  • "So glad to have a high-quality restaurant in the suburbs. Food was excellent. We were there mid-afternoon on a Sunday, and got the brunch menu, which we didn't expect, but found plenty to like. The skillet of mussels with mushrooms was a good starter. My husband enjoyed his crab cake, and we both enjoyed the watermelon gazpacho. Can't wait to go back! We had just eaten at Robert Weidmaier's Wilwood Kitchen on Saturday, and also had an excellent meal there."

  • "This was our second time at Brasserie Beck and both times the service was impeccable and the food and service were excellent. Our waiter knew the menus (Wine beer and food) thoroughly. His recommendations were on target. everything was cooked perfectly and the service was superb. I highly recommend this as a great upscale restaurant. We certainly will be back."

  • "On my opentable reservation I had requested outdoor seating. Upon arrival was told that they don't hold outdoor tables in advance, and there was a 90 minute wait for outside seating. So I went back to the bar to consult with my party, a drink later I went back and said we'd prefer outside, was added to the wait list where only four groups were ahead of us. That's not a 90 minute wait, it never would have been, the first hostess was just trying to force people inside (their dining room is ugly). 20 minutes later our table was ready. Service was quite good, and the food was fine, but overpriced. And I realize Belgian beers which are $6 apiece retail are going to cost more, but $15? Is that really necessary, in Gaithersburg?"

  • "The old site of the O'Donnell's has been transformed into a brasserie. Great outdoor patio and menu that's very similar to the restaurant in DC. Nice spot for lunch when the weather cooperates. It's on my new list of places to go for lunch."

  • "The food was mostly very good--had some "service issues," though. It took over 20 minutes from the time we placed our dessert order to be served dessert! (And the dessert was not worth the wait!) Prior to that, though, everything was fine.--the appetizers and entrees were very tasty. Prices are steep, but the food is high-quality. This restaurant is a welcome addition to the Kentlands area."

  • "I've had mussels many times over the years at the Belgian coast, and am always looking for the same here at home. I've been to the competition in Olney and downtown - and the mussels were great, like here at Beck. The "other" folks are serving in the traditional manner: a kilo in a covered pot. Sounds like a lot, but if you go the natural route (no cream or cheese), a kilo is just right for a mussel fan. In both other restaurants, the price was $20-22, with "frites". Here at Beck, they give you a POUND (a kilo, remember, is 2.2 lbs), for $22, then charge extra (okay, only a buck) for the fries. When my order arrived, I reminded the waiter that I wanted the full, not half, order. He said it was the full order. I left HUNGRY."

  • "The food was good, not amazing. The service was good. They had a really great band playing outside, but it was painfully loud. It is too bad because they could have more people stay for an extra drink but the volume made it unenjoyable."

  • "The food was excellent. The service was good. I was a little surprised when they attempted to charge us $10.00 more for the bottle of wine I ordered. When I questioned the amount they said it was the correct price. Only after asking to see the wine list again was the price adjusted to the correct amount."

  • "The food was very good, however the service was poor. The hostess was very inexperienced and couldn't seem to handle the amount of people arriving. We had a reservation, however had to wait over 30 minutes to be seated. When I mentioned it to the manager, he said they try to balance seatings with the walk-ins. (Isn't the point of a reservation is so you don't have to wait?) Our server was overwhelmed. He couldn't handle the amount of tables and was visibly frustrated. At the end he seemed to give up and we were waited on by the manager and another server. Overall, the food was good, however at this point they need to figure out the service aspect of the restaurant. It wasn't even full and they still had major issues."

  • "I was very excited to try barsserie beck when it opened in Kentlands. All the pictures on the website looked awesome. We are brunch on the patio which was perfect! The staff was nice but our waiter did constantly try to sell us on higher priced items. When our food arrived it looked beautiful but was only average tasting. None of the food was worth raving about. I probably would go back except that the prices where outrageous. If this was in DC the prices would probably be on point but in the area it is, this is so over the normal. Kentlands has plenty of places with the same quality food and atmospher for a much better price!"

  • "Starting with the good: the patio is very nice. Our party of four liked our food but felt the fish portions were small. I'm a female who seldom finishes her entree but I was a little hungry after eating my rockfish. The accompaniments to the fish were more like garnishes than sides. Waitress was quite nice but totally forgot someone's frites, and we asked at least 5 times for more bread. When we mentioned the poor service to the manager, he apologized but seemed relatively unfazed. Would not return."

  • "BB is a fine restaurant - a bit pricey, but the food is commensurately good. Very nice for a small or medium group that wants to get together."

  • "We reserved a table for six for Friday evening to celebrate a birthday. When we arrived, we were offered the very first table near the entrance and the kitchen. There were multiple tables available throughout restaurant as it was not busy at all. After we complained, we were shown to a different table a bit deeper into the room. While the food was good and our waiter was attentive, the experience of making a reservation for a special occasion and being offered the worst table at the restaurant completely turned us off, affected the rest of the evening, and colored our celebration. We will not be returning to this establishment."

  • "The noise level was unbearable and no matter where you sit, the AC blows on you. When my friend asked if she could switch the risotto for another vegetable our server said the chef gets upset and " he has knives" when asked to change an item. When told that she could not eat risotto, he said he would ask the chef. He came back and said that the chef was in a good mood and would give her a vegetable instead of the risotto. The food was excellent."

  • "First visit to the Kentlands Beck this week. On par with the original Beck! I am old school, mussels and frites with a good class of wine is my idea of a Friday night! Delicious and really good wine choices by our server. Was a little surprised to see so many kids/families on the patio but then again it's the Kentlands and these people think they're raising royalty! Great restaurant, will be back frequently for my 'muscle fix'!"

  • "My second time I have eaten here. The first time for a friend's birthday lunch. Service was reasonably quick and the food was good. The second time (in this instance) the food was very salty. We would have returned it, but given the 45-50 minutes that we had to wait for the food to come out.with our two young children we weren't willing to wait for the return and remaking process. This is NOT a kid friendly place to dine. They don't have a menu for kids, the server couldn't tell us really what they have. The server was doing her best to throw out options that were available but with no details as to what was included or how much it costs. For a Thurs night at 40% capacity we were disappointed. For the cost, the food was sub par and salty."

  • "The food was outstanding. We had a special for brunch - lemon soufflé pancake. So delicious! My daughter ordered their steak tartar and loved it. She wanted something else and asked if they could make her a soft boiled egg. It was not on the menu, but it was no problem. They prepared it for her, but they did not have an egg cup in which to serve it to her. So they improvised and made it work. We are looking forward to returning for lunch or dinner. Perfect service and delicious food made for a great brunch!"

  • "We have eaten lunch and brunch at BB in Gaithersburg. The soft-shell crab sandwich for lunch was excellent. Brunch was above average, but not specular, for eggs Benedict at brunch. The BB outdoor dining area is very nice for brunch and lunch.Recommend BB for lunch or brunch."

  • "Our first visit to Brasserie Beck in Kentlands was very enjoyable. We dined on their outdoor patio on a beautiful summer night. The patio is lovely. Good size tables with umbrellas and a large shading tree. They also have sofas for a more relaxing place to have a drink. Our service was prompt and professional. We shared a endive salad and we each had the mussels (good size and plump) and fritzes (hot and tasty.) A good wine list and a sommelier provided us with a good Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. Desert and coffee (French press) followed. We look forward to our next visit."

  • "Mussels were excellent. Four out of six diners ordered fish. We were all very pleased with our selections. Two people had two different steaks and they both were disappointed in the sauce that was served with the steaks."

  • "Had dinner there a few nights ago-I had the short ribs and my wife had a fish filet. We both had the endive salad. Unfortunately the salad was the highlight of the meal for both of us. The beef was a little underseasoned, and the noodles were plain. The fish was bland, no seasoning at all. Service was fine, setting great outside. Hope they can improve on the quality of the entrees."

  • "Second time back , so we do like the food . Strange because we tried to get a 7:30 reservation and they were full, but when we got there at 8:00 the inside was empty. Everything else was fine but after the bill was completed we decided to sit a while longer and ordered extra coffee and instead of just bringing it the waiter added an extra coffee to the bill. I thought that was uncalled for after a nice size bill from the four of us. I have never seen this done anywhere else. These are small things that people remember"

  • "Outside seating is nice but music was so loud that we couldn't hear ourselves or the waiter. Too may speakers For such a small space - way too loud!"
    Dined on 7/4/2014
  • "The only plus side to the restaurant is the outdoor seating. Food is subpar at best, overpriced and the live ban on Friday nights....awful, loud and like fingers in a chalkboard. Either you're a fine dining establishment or a cheesy nightclub but not both."

  • "Had lunch at Brasserie Beck and was prepared for poor service based on other reviews. Actually was pleasantly surprised by the very good service I received. The food was great as everyone else had said. The atmosphere was actually quite good, again better than others had expressed. Must be a bunch of hard to please DC socialites that gave all the other reviews, so if that's not you, you will enjoy Brasserie Beck!"

  • "Food was fresh and well prepared. Salads were quite good, but small; not large enough for a meal. Bread was good, but we would have preferred whole grain options. Extensive wine and beer list, but prices were so high that we decided to skip."
    Dined on 7/2/2014
  • "The food is delicious and nicely presented. The trout almandine was perfect - fresh and cooked to perfection. The major problem with the restaurant is that the tables are too close together and the acoustics are not good. We went on Wednesday evening when the restaurant was about 75% filled and the noise level was so bad it was often difficult to hear the others at our table for four. The wait staff is pleasant and competent, but the service was slow and not very attentive. The entrée prices are a little high but not outrageous given the quality of the food. The appetizers and desserts, while good, were definitely overpriced with the appetizer portions larger than necessary."
