A word from Brasserie Athenee
A rich elegant atmosphere with simply great French food.

I've eaten at Athenee many times
and have always ordered the pre-theatre prix fixe meal but this time the vegetables were a kind of pulverized slush and the chicken was dry and tough. Both the green salad and the creme caramel were fine but I'm going to order off the menu next time. As always, the service was impeccable and the ambience just fine."

We had dinner here for Valentines
Day and had a delicious meal. We had salads, appetizers and a main course each. All were prepared very well and tasted delicious. The service was great, everyone was very friendly and gracious, and the ambiance was cozy and romantic. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and will eat there again!"

I had dinner with my boyfriend for
his birthday just as the pre-theatre crowd was finishing up. The service was attentive, the food was good, and it was pleasantly quiet as we finished our meal and dessert leisurely. It was a little crowded when we first arrived; I felt like I was bumping elbows with the table next to me and was unintentionally eavesdropping because they were so close. Also, there wasn't much protection from the cold--every time someone came in or left, a cold breeze sent a chill through the restaurant."

Very good, varied, imaginative
dishes. I had butternut squash soup and the Mediterranean tapas appetizer, a very complete, reasonably healthy and delicious meal. I have been there before and will return often. Very convenient to Broadway theaters. The service was also good, attentive but not intrusive. That may vary depending on the crowd -- this time we were there early on a snowy week night and not many people were out."
Dined on 2/4/2014
The location was perfect for the
theater we were going to, and the food was good. Service could have been a little more attentive."
Dined on 1/31/2014
food was disappointing -- fair at
best. sea bass had a strange preparation, the mussels (billed as one of the better items on the menu) were small and tasteless and had to be sent back because they came out cold. with so many other good eateries on the same street (restaurant row -- 46th street), this one should be passed by."
Dined on 1/26/2014
i especially liked it during its
quiet time at three on a cold Sunday afternoon"
Dined on 1/26/2014
This is a great restaurant with
fabulous food, friendly service !"
Dined on 1/25/2014
Good meal overall. Slightly
overpriced, but typical for the area. Food was great, service was good, ambiance was a little lack lustre. Was cold sitting by the windows, small wine list, and the server was not all that knowledgable on the available selections. Portions sizes were decent as well."
Dined on 1/24/2014
Great spot to eat before seeing a
matinee. Fun to watch people going by. Food is task and plentiful but not so much that you get sleepy during the show."
Dined on 1/11/2014
It was convenient to the Theater
District...which is why one eats up there. The restaurants are not know for excellent food, just convenient food. Too Bad! Anyway Athenee was no great shakes, but eatable. Not sure how a French Brassier can be out of Mussels for an early Saturday seating. I feel that the wait staff should inform you what they don't have before you get your heart set on a certain thing and go to order items they don't have...And the frits (fries) were soggy! Really?, that's what you go to a Brasserie for! Big Sigh!!!"

We went on a recent Saturday
evening. The service was good, the food was very tasty, though my grilled octopus was tough and cold:( my husbands onion soup was wonderful. He also inhaled his Duck Confit LOVED IT! The service was very good though I so hate how very close together the tables are. This is not at all relaxing and you learn entirely to much information about the diners around you."
Dined on 12/28/2013
The food was just ok. The service
was slow. They were overbooked and totally understaffed."
Dined on 12/26/2013
Overall our experience was
mediocre. We did love the ambiance of the restaurant but neither my husband or my food was of the quality we would expect in NYC for the price. Next time we would just go for drinks and appetizers."
Dined on 12/23/2013
Service was attentive and
professional. Food was hot and delicious. We enjoyed a grilled octopus appetizer which was great. The monk fish medallions were nicely done and the mussels were tender. The wine list had a nice selection. Would recommend this little gem."
Dined on 12/23/2013
This brasserie was a good find pre
or post theatre near Times Square. Good, not outstanding food and very nice service."
Dined on 12/9/2013
Very enjoyable even though one
seldom sees or reads about this restaurant. FRITES are great. Salmon portion was HUGE and Seafood linguini was excellent."
Dined on 11/18/2013
Food was OK... Service was OK.....
Great for before and after theater, but don't go out of your way otherwise."
Dined on 11/16/2013
Cocktails are nice, bread was
good, our table was in the window as requested, wine list adequate and appetizers fine. There were 6 of us and we all agreed that the main dishes were mediocre and over priced. The chicken cutlet was not as described, the baked fish was drenched in a soggy breading, the tuna was almost inedible, the fish and pasta dish was 90% pasta, the risotto has a strange flavor etc. The waiter spilled a full glass of ice water and was appeared almost annoyed as he sopped it up with a not-to-clean towel. We will never return."
Dined on 11/15/2013
Nice setting and good service. Had
the theater menu. Food was average but very reasonable price."
Dined on 11/12/2013
This restaurant is in an ideal
spot on 46th and 8th avenue, near numerous theaters and parking lots. It's floor-to-ceiling windows make it light and airy all year round. I especially like the appetizers and frequently make a meal of 2 appetizers. The wine by the glass is excellent, with several quality selections at a reasonable price. There is a bar area with TV that can be fun to see at without disturbing diners in the dining area. Try it!!"

We have visited many restaurants
in the area but have never noticed the Brasserie before. It showed up on an Open Table search and we thought it was worth a try. First impressions count and we felt welcomed and comfortable in our surroundings. The service was friendly, attentive but unobtrusive. We were looking for a location where we could chat with our guests. The atmosphere encouraged that. We had a delightful evening at a moderate (for Manhattan!!) price. We all had different starters and entrees and all were pleased with our choices. We will be back"

We arrived at the restaurant
admittedly 10 minutes late for our 12:30 reservation. But the restaurant was not full and we got our table immediately. That was the last positive thing I can say about our experience. We ordered a drinks and then ordered our lunch. At 1:15 the waiter hadn't even put bread on the table. We tried to get his attention and finally at 1:25 he stopped by. We told him we had theater tickets and had been waiting for some time. He shook his head and said there was a big private party going on and we wouldn't make it. We asked if we could maybe get salads AND SOME BREAD. That came at 1:40. We took as many bites as we could, paid the check and raced to the theater. Ridiculous for a theatre district spot."
Dined on 11/6/2013
Really enjoyed the meal excellent
service. Very reasonably priced."
Dined on 11/3/2013
The food was good, but nothing
really was like "OMG, I have to have this again". I got together with some old friends: about 6 of us and it was great. Service was Very Good and was not loud inside, so we were all able to hear each other speak. Good enough for me. I would go again, but not my top choice."
Dined on 11/2/2013
Either this place is a typical
example of the precooked, prepackaged food that lesser-quality try to pass off as a dining experience, or they need a new chef in the kitchen. There are better places at the same price point in theatre district."
Dined on 10/28/2013
Four dinners, three excellent
meals. Although forewarned, my wife couldn't get used to the marmalade on her hamburger. Service was efficient, friendly and personable. Loved the steak tartare and onion soup."
Dined on 10/25/2013
We really wanted to love Brasserie
Athenee, however the food was mediocre at best. My breast of chicken was very dry and my friend's steak was just ok. I will say that the Onion Soup was really good. On the other hand, the service was great. Our server, a young guy, was so accommodating and really outdid himself aiming to please. Unfortunately, it is not on my "Go To Again" list."
Dined on 10/23/2013
We waited too long for our main
courses. Asked for bread re-fill more than once, and it never arrived. 3 out of 4 of us were disappointed in the taste of our food and the accompanying veggies. There were too few and unexciting choices on the prix-fix menu. And there was a mistake on the bill which had to be corrected."
Dined on 10/20/2013
Good restaurant. Decent value for
money and good staff."
Dined on 10/15/2013
This restaurant gave us a
reasonable dinner in the midst of a very touristy area prior to going to the theater."
Dined on 10/11/2013
This is such a convenient
pre-theater restaurant, but it needs to improve its entrees. Salads are fine, there's real hot chocolate, but the seafood risotto was gummy and tasted like Franco American spaghetti. Stick to the mussels, which were unusually large and good."
Dined on 10/6/2013
We had the duck leg confit and the
salmon--both were great. They offer a pre- theater menu as well as the regular dinner menu. My only complaint is that we did feel a little rushed by the wait staff. Will definitely go back though."
Dined on 10/5/2013
I have gone to Brasserie several
times in the past and had found it to be a gem. This time around it disappointed with less than average food and bad service. I hope they get their game up again"
Dined on 10/4/2013
On this occasion, we had to make a
curtain time, but it is more than just a pre-theater restaurant. That said, they have an impressive 3-course pre-theater menu. Very good value and excellent food. Tomato soup special was particularly good -- definitely made fresh from late-Sept. harvest. Decent wine choices. I would go back any time."
Dined on 10/1/2013
We had a family dinner here after
a Saturday matinee. We were seated promptly, and the service staff was extremely friendly. Our food was fantastic! Grilled squid, chicken livers, onion soup and escargot appetizers were great, the duck confit, monkfish, coq au vin and boef bourginon were very good as well, although the portion of beef bourginion was a little smaller than I would have liked. Our cocktails were good, but very strong, and the wine list was decent and reasonably priced. Our server had a little bit of a language issue, but this was far outweighed by her attentiveness and beautiful smile. Good family dinner!!"

I should know better than go
anywhere to dine on 8th Ave. on a Sat. eve., but this was so convenient. To be brief, a salade of frisée and bacon was sooooooo sweet. The burgers had zero taste and the accompanying "frites" were the soggiest I've ver had. If you want onion soupe gratinée you're better off bring a can of Campbell's. Overly priced wine did not help. Nice service overall, but I'd never ever return."
Dined on 9/29/2013
Overlooking the corner of 8th Ave
and W 46th St is a fabulous French/Mediterranean restaurant. Enjoy fine cuisine in a friendly atmosphere while being entertained by the passerby's through large picture windows"
Dined on 9/23/2013
Definitely better than its ratings
- maybe not 5 star, but an excellent value - great location - competitively priced - generous portions - we ate there twice during our four day stay in town. The mussels and frites were particularly good."
Dined on 9/17/2013
Whenever we're looking for a place
to meet and talk with friends midtown, we head directly to Athenée. All the glass windows make it the most open-feeling restaurant in the theatre district, and there are no jumbo sports TVs or deafening music to interfere with good conversation. The prices are reasonable, the decor is classic and lovely, the service is always friendly and accommodating, and the wide variety of food is unfailingly good. Why go anywhere else?"
