Diner Reviews
  • "Went to Brasserie 8 1/2 for dinner with one of my friends. It was French Restaurant Week and she had heard good things about it so I booked a reservation for us. It was a great choice. The food was very tasty (my steak was cooked perfectly medium well) and the wine was a Cabernet which paired well with the steak. Overall, we were both very pleased. Would definitely go there again."

  • "Wonderful ambiance. Staircase may be difficult to negotiate for elderly or disabled. Lounge is comfortable and tastefully arranged. Dining area warm and inviting. Food was very good overall. Portions were reasonable without being overabundant. Duck excellent. Lobster a bit over cooked in warm lobster salad. Filet mignon was tender but served without spices or flavor enhancers. Drink selection and wine list offered great variety. Wait staff and servce was outstanding. Very accommodating in suggesting alternative menu choices for diet restrictions. Prices were reasonable. Had a memorable dining experience. Worth a return trip."

  • "The Sunday brunch at Brasserie 8 1/2 is such a solid deal. The food is consistently good, and the choices varied! I wouldn't call it a foodie's place but if you have a large group in town, perhaps family or a good-sized group of friends, then you can't go wrong bringing them here for Sunday brunch! The place itself is spacious; the wait-staff very attentive, and very kid-friendly as well!"

  • "I have been here several times before and enjoyed it. This time, it was for Mother's Day Brunch. The food was not particularly good, choices uninspiring and the brunch was overpriced - with no beverages, not even a cup of coffee, included."

  • "Slow kitchen and cold food. Wait staff slow to appease and alleviate the 45 min wait for main course."

  • "As a refugee from the now-discontinued Waldorf-Astoria Sunday Brunches, I am glad to have found a worthy replacement for special occasions, like birthdays. And, it's affordable (which the Waldorf was not)."

  • "I come to this restaurant for the Executive Chef Frank Deletrain. Love his food even when he was cooking at Cafe Centro."

  • "We has a wonderful evening. Service was good and food excellent. Great fined in N.Y.Pricing for N. Y. good buy."

  • "There was a party with loud children dining there when I was (25 people at the party). When I complained about the noise the manager both asked the hostess of the party to quiet the children and offered champagne to my party (3) in apology. That is being responsible as a restaurant manager."

  • "After a wonderful first experience, we returned for another dinner. The server was sub par and they had raised the price on the same bottle of wine we had ordered a couple of weeks before, from $35 to $42. I have found the same wine in the liquor store for $8.99. Seems greedy for them to mark up the wine that much!"

  • "Brunch on Sunday is really great, with various possibilities to eat (also for veggies) : eggs/different styles, egg Benedict, sausages, bacon, fruits, salads, vegetables, lox, granola, yogurt, and a lot of sweets"

  • "Had been here before for a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner and was disappointed this time. Food was average, lukewarm and sitting around (we went for Sunday brunch buffet) but it was like a cafeteria with the price of an upscale restaurant."

  • "We have been to Brasserie 8-1/2 several times for Sunday brunch and are never disappointed. The food is very good and the desserts are amazing. The staff is very attentive and we frequently meet with friends for brunch. No matter how crowded the resaurant may be, we never have been rushed."

  • "Each Sunday this beautiful restaurant has a fine all-you-can-eat brunch that has enough choices to satisfy anyone. I love the Eggs Benedict-always prepared perfectly. The smoked salmon is always fresh. The carvings, usually turkey and roast beef and ham are just deelish. And keep it quiet but they have the most outrageous mac & cheese that I just cannot resist. Of course there are omelets as you like and many salads and all the breakfast trimmings as well as fruits and some heartbreaking deserts too. I say heartbreaking because my lovely spouse won't allow me to wolf down all that i want."

  • "We chose this restaurant mainly because it had appeared in a favorite television show of one membrane of our party. It's not what I would call an intimate setting and I could easily picture it as a disco but we had a lovely meal served with attention to detail. Duck breast was cooked perfectly and the beef lover in our group thought her steak was one of the best she had ever eaten. Would go again."

  • "Food was good, but not great. Lamb cooked not perfectly to temperature ordered. Bacon macaroni and cheese was very good."

  • "What a great time we had! Finally a place where you can have a conversation! Tables are not jammed together, so you can enjoy a nice conversation! Food was delicious, well prepared, perfect crabcakes and very good seared tuna. Service was very attentive. We will definitely go back!"

  • "8 1/2 was recommended by our concierge. Upon arrival we were greeted at the top of the stairs, and from that point onwards always made to feel most welcome. I had the salmon and my husband the sea bass. Both of us really enjoyed our meals. The wine list was also reasonable priced. The service was very friendly and attentive."

  • "Sunday brunch is $32 for all you can eat (excluding beverages). The space is really beautiful, with a dramatic staircase. There are also a few stairs between the dining area and the buffet, which is worth knowing if you can't do stairs. The food was really good, and our server was very attentive without being intrusive. Several families were there, as well as couples and small groups. Thumbs up!"

  • "Brasserie 8-1/2 is our favorite place for Sunday Brunch whenever we are in Manhattan. Food is great, atmosphere terrific and the wait-staff friendly and attentive. Restaurant is attractively decorated - You could not ask for a better environment to relax and enjoy a variety of selections; carving and omelet stations, breakfast and lunch choices, salads, shrimp, salmon right down to a beautiful dessert array. It is the best!"

  • "Food was really only so-so, especially the bouilliabaise, the Friday special. Somehow it was topped with an overcooked, browned shrimp--possibly oleft over from another dish. And pricey for what it was. Must admit the duck looked good, but I didn't get to taste it."

  • "Good food and service. Prices typical for mid town. It's a rare change in NYC to have a big room with a high ceiling and tables spread pretty far apart. Ambiance was very nice and one can have a private business conversation. "

  • "Average buffet brunch. Not expensive and probably great if you have kids in NYC. Not much if you are a couple and looking for a Sunday brunch experience. Ran out of some items, hot foods cold, no alcohol before 12."

  • "This is the best buffet I have been to in a long time. For brunch they have everything you can ever think of wanting. Omelet bar, waffle bar, dessert bar, a line of salads and other stations leave you with so many great choices you don't know where to start. "

  • "I've always enjoyed this restaurant. I love the location, the décor, and the food. I find it wonderful and quiet for intimate dinners especially if you have a round booth. Also we were there for The Loire Valley Wines restaurant week and we really enjoyed it, especially the Muscadet wine that I ordered. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to friends."

  • "I have been dining at Brasserie 8-1/2 for many years. One thing I love about having dinner there is that it is not a loud, noisy venue. I don't want a "scene". I want great food and service in an elegant, quiet setting. The booths are spacious, comfortable and provide excellent privacy. A superb choice for a special occasion or business dinner. The food never disappoints, presented beautifully and artistically, and the service is always impeccable without being haughty. "

  • "It's not fair sometimes to write a review when you like a place as much as we do . But perhaps this review will encourage people to try it. It's not a scene if that's what you're looking for so all you B and T people go to Tao downtown. But if you want a outstanding meal , paired with great wine choices at reasonable prices with excellent service , this is the place for you. The ambiance is beautiful and you can actually hear the dinner conversation across the table without shouting. Amazing ! From the minute you walk down the spiral staircase to the minute you leave you keep saying " how come I never knew about this place ". I'm almost tempted to keep it a secret but that's not fair to the rest of the you. Go once just to see if I'm right"

  • "for buffet, the food was good, but the serving dishes seemed to be always empty. you had to comstantly come back to see if they brought food out. you would think that after all this time they would have it figured out. "

  • "I visit 8 1/2 or the other Patina Group Restaurants often. We hosted a guest and thought that 8 1/2 would be a good choice for an early pre-theater dinner. The food was fine and almost as good as usual although my shrimp and steak where not the usual quality. We where greeted properly by the hostess. The waiter seemed angry and not happy so we did not want to bother him with any special requests. Very interesting how the service often effects the entire experience and even the taste of the food. I have been here twice in one month. The previous experience was excellent, not this time however."
