Diner Reviews
  • "Works of art worthy of a museum, hang in this truly beautiful restaurant. Tables are spaced far enough apart to allow for conversation. Great food (best duck breast I've had in years) and lovely service. What more could anyone want."

  • "Restaurant week gave us an excellent opportunity to sample this lovely brasserie on 57th street. The portions were more than adequate and all the food was well prepared and served beautifully. We will be back."

  • "I've been to so many buffet style restaurants. What makes Brasserie 8 1/2 so good for brunch and a stellar buffet setting is they have structured the food in miniature or reduced portions so that you actually can eat a smattering of all the dishes without over-eating and feeling bloated. The desserts are worth the entire trip."

  • "We love the ambiance, which allows for normal conversation. The food is not quite up to what it used to be (especially the fish that I've had recently) but it's still one of our favorite places."

  • "Great location, great service and decor. The place was a bit empty in the middle of restaurant week, however it was the perfect place to have a lovely dinner and long conversation with friends. The semi-private booths keep noise at bay- even with a large group two tables away from us, our convesration was never interrupted and kept it private. The booths are great for a date or small group of friends. Will be back"

  • "We visited during Restaurant week and ordered off the special menu. The food was all delicious and well cooked. There is a nice ambiance. We were rushing a bit to go see a play and the waiter did his best to get us out on time. The drinks were excellent also."

  • "I could not say it enough, this was absolutely great. Even if I tried to find fault there was none. The staff was so friendly and accommodating even answering my 8 year old grandsons questions and listening to his jokes. They table cleaned as soon as a plate was empty. There was so much food to choose from, there was something for everyone. It was my Daughters birthday and I received the best compliment from her. She was very impressed and thoroughly enjoyed herself. Thank you for everything. I will be back again and again. Oh yes and great shopping in the area. We took a stroll through Central Park after eating so much we needed to walk it off."

  • "Our first time experience was truly outstanding. We have eaten at some of the best restaurants in NY, and Brassery 81/2 ranks right up there. Our waiter was very friendly, and I can't say enough about the food. My wife had duckling, and I had spiced monk fish. And the macaron --- Wow!"

  • "Thanks or a sensational meal -- apps, entrees, desserts, ALL fabulous. Brasserie 8 1/2 always impresses us - this time, we took 4 friends and they all raved about their meals. Ambience was terrific too since we were all able to have a conversation without noise/interruption. Service was excellent throughout entire meal and we were not rushed at all. Thank you again!"

  • "We had the loveliest lobster salad, super refreshing, and filled with lots of delicious, fresh crunch. The service was really considerate, and the menu had lots of great options."

  • "Jeffrey, the welcoming and ever-so-helpful host, sets the tone for this restaurant. Its comfortable booths and banquettes make it the perfect place for a business lunch or a refuge during a day of shopping. I often order the chicken Chop Chop salad when I am watching my weight, but there is heartier fare for those who wish it. It is my go-to place for midtown lunches."

  • "The ravioli was still cold even though it was sent back to the kitchen already & my sister was very disappointed. I celebrated my birthday that night & it was like an ordinary dinner. In my reservation, I indicated that it's my birthday. It would have been nice if they have decorated my paid dessert with greetings & put a candle on it. Just a simple touch will make a difference."

  • "Went to Brasserie 8 1/2 for dinner with one of my friends. It was French Restaurant Week and she had heard good things about it so I booked a reservation for us. It was a great choice. The food was very tasty (my steak was cooked perfectly medium well) and the wine was a Cabernet which paired well with the steak. Overall, we were both very pleased. Would definitely go there again."

  • "Wonderful ambiance. Staircase may be difficult to negotiate for elderly or disabled. Lounge is comfortable and tastefully arranged. Dining area warm and inviting. Food was very good overall. Portions were reasonable without being overabundant. Duck excellent. Lobster a bit over cooked in warm lobster salad. Filet mignon was tender but served without spices or flavor enhancers. Drink selection and wine list offered great variety. Wait staff and servce was outstanding. Very accommodating in suggesting alternative menu choices for diet restrictions. Prices were reasonable. Had a memorable dining experience. Worth a return trip."

  • "The Sunday brunch at Brasserie 8 1/2 is such a solid deal. The food is consistently good, and the choices varied! I wouldn't call it a foodie's place but if you have a large group in town, perhaps family or a good-sized group of friends, then you can't go wrong bringing them here for Sunday brunch! The place itself is spacious; the wait-staff very attentive, and very kid-friendly as well!"

  • "As a refugee from the now-discontinued Waldorf-Astoria Sunday Brunches, I am glad to have found a worthy replacement for special occasions, like birthdays. And, it's affordable (which the Waldorf was not)."

  • "There was a party with loud children dining there when I was (25 people at the party). When I complained about the noise the manager both asked the hostess of the party to quiet the children and offered champagne to my party (3) in apology. That is being responsible as a restaurant manager."

  • "We have been to Brasserie 8-1/2 several times for Sunday brunch and are never disappointed. The food is very good and the desserts are amazing. The staff is very attentive and we frequently meet with friends for brunch. No matter how crowded the resaurant may be, we never have been rushed."

  • "Had been here before for a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner and was disappointed this time. Food was average, lukewarm and sitting around (we went for Sunday brunch buffet) but it was like a cafeteria with the price of an upscale restaurant."

  • "Each Sunday this beautiful restaurant has a fine all-you-can-eat brunch that has enough choices to satisfy anyone. I love the Eggs Benedict-always prepared perfectly. The smoked salmon is always fresh. The carvings, usually turkey and roast beef and ham are just deelish. And keep it quiet but they have the most outrageous mac & cheese that I just cannot resist. Of course there are omelets as you like and many salads and all the breakfast trimmings as well as fruits and some heartbreaking deserts too. I say heartbreaking because my lovely spouse won't allow me to wolf down all that i want."

  • "Brunch on Sunday is really great, with various possibilities to eat (also for veggies) : eggs/different styles, egg Benedict, sausages, bacon, fruits, salads, vegetables, lox, granola, yogurt, and a lot of sweets"

  • "We chose this restaurant mainly because it had appeared in a favorite television show of one membrane of our party. It's not what I would call an intimate setting and I could easily picture it as a disco but we had a lovely meal served with attention to detail. Duck breast was cooked perfectly and the beef lover in our group thought her steak was one of the best she had ever eaten. Would go again."

  • "What a great time we had! Finally a place where you can have a conversation! Tables are not jammed together, so you can enjoy a nice conversation! Food was delicious, well prepared, perfect crabcakes and very good seared tuna. Service was very attentive. We will definitely go back!"

  • "8 1/2 was recommended by our concierge. Upon arrival we were greeted at the top of the stairs, and from that point onwards always made to feel most welcome. I had the salmon and my husband the sea bass. Both of us really enjoyed our meals. The wine list was also reasonable priced. The service was very friendly and attentive."

  • "Sunday brunch is $32 for all you can eat (excluding beverages). The space is really beautiful, with a dramatic staircase. There are also a few stairs between the dining area and the buffet, which is worth knowing if you can't do stairs. The food was really good, and our server was very attentive without being intrusive. Several families were there, as well as couples and small groups. Thumbs up!"

  • "Brasserie 8-1/2 is our favorite place for Sunday Brunch whenever we are in Manhattan. Food is great, atmosphere terrific and the wait-staff friendly and attentive. Restaurant is attractively decorated - You could not ask for a better environment to relax and enjoy a variety of selections; carving and omelet stations, breakfast and lunch choices, salads, shrimp, salmon right down to a beautiful dessert array. It is the best!"

  • "Food was really only so-so, especially the bouilliabaise, the Friday special. Somehow it was topped with an overcooked, browned shrimp--possibly oleft over from another dish. And pricey for what it was. Must admit the duck looked good, but I didn't get to taste it."

  • "Good food and service. Prices typical for mid town. It's a rare change in NYC to have a big room with a high ceiling and tables spread pretty far apart. Ambiance was very nice and one can have a private business conversation. "
