A word from Branch 27
Located in the old 27th Ward library branch in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood, Branch 27 is an American bistro owned by Cary Michael (formerly of Rockit Bar and Grill and Lettuce Entertain You) and Howard Natinsky (of Five Star, Fat Cat, and Empire Liquors). Opened in mid-February 2009, this casual, neighborhood spot will feature a simple, hearty menu, craft beers, and an extensive wine list, as well as wines by the glass.

The partners have focused on creating a comfortable, value-oriented concept, with top-notch food and a friendly, modern atmosphere. Located within an early 1900s brick and terra cotta building that once contained Chicago’s 27th ward Library, Branch 27 creatively combines a rustic setting with stylized, handcrafted furnishings and details. A 20’ x 20’ glass atrium anchors the rear of the dining room, creating a year round garden experience. The menu will showcase an extensive selection of shareable appetizers, entrée salads, and familiar main courses

Was looking for a local restaurant to go with my husband and sister for my sister's going away dinner on a Sunday evening. Our waitress told us that the appetizers were not large so my sister ordered the mac 'n cheese and my husband ordered the Baja tacos. The tacos were delicious, but quite large and the mac-n-cheese was huge for an appetizer. The mac-n-cheese was nice and cheesy but I thought the pulled pork made it a little too heavy. My husband enjoyed the fettucini. I ordered the stuffed zucchini which was good, but a little dry and bland. I must come back to try the flatbreads that everybody raves about and also try their brunch which seems to be popular.

So many great options on the menu it was hard to decide what to order. Our food was great so we'll be back to start to work our way through the choices. The Thai mussels were so, so tasty. Kohlrabi salad was delicious. But the standout was the BBQ flat bread -- probably the tastiest I've ever had! No room for dessert, but I saw what another table ordered and it was a huge portion and looked delicious. Server was very nice and helpful.

I find it hard to believe that the kitchen staff couldn't bring out all four dishes at the appropriate time in a very slow restaurant. My husband waited 7 minutes before his French Toast came out... the other dishes were definitely more complicated than French Toast.... no apologies from the waitress nor the manager. I will NOT dine here again. I've lived in the neighborhood for almost 20 years and I promise to never recommend this place to any of my fellow neighbors or friends.

We have only been to Branch 27 two times and each time has been great. My husband and I have been looking for a casual neighborhood place since one of our favorite places suddenly closed several years ago and Branch did the trick. The place is cozy yet has an air of sophistication. Service attentive but not over bearing and last the food we have tried has been outstanding!! We missed the steak tartar on the menu on our last visit. Looking forward to introducing our friends to this place!!

We went here for Easter Brunch after church on Sunday. All staff were friendly & consciousness and our waitress Brooke was exceptionally so. (Management had also been very prompt, courteous, co-operative and responsive during the week both by phone & email when making & changing the reservations.) Our party of three had 'breakfast' entrees: One omelet, one Eggs Benedict, and one scrambled with sausage. We all enjoyed our meals and thought the food very fresh, good quality, and well prepared. My husband doesn't normally like pan roasted potatoes, but he kept eating mine from off my plate. It's a little noisy, but the tables are comfortably spaced. It was a good choice! The Branch 27 team clearly want to please their customers. Ve

We went to Branch 27 during Restaurant Week and had a fantasticmeal. I would highly recommend the scallops and bacon appetizer and the mahi mahi entree. The scallops melted in my mouth and the mahi mahi had just enough heat behind them. The service was on-point and the staff was available, if needed, but we never felt pestered. Everything was excellent and I'm contemplating going back before Restaurant Week 2013 is over ...

Our meal was uneven. Some things were stunningly well prepared and absolutely delicious, such as the beet salad and the white beans with pork. On the other hand, the soup was much to salty, and the server kindly removed it from our bill. With so much great food on Chicago Ave., I probably won't go back soon.

Met a girlfriend for brunch and was not overly impressed. Service was the most fantastic, everything else was sub-par. Our main entree was luke warm at best and we had ordered the salmon benedict. Luke warm salmon benedict, not so tasty. We followed that with the french toast which was piping hot, so clearly the ovens were working. Pre-meal Bellinis a nice treat. Won't be back.

My one complaint was that the waiter never asked how I liked my pork, and it was definitely cooked more to the well side (I would've ordered medium). Other than this, the service was nice and my boyfriend loved his meal (skirt steak I think). The mussels were also delicious, a HUGE portion, more than enough for 2 people to share as an app.

A Buddy and I went on Branches Mussels Nite - He's a Mussels addict- I'm also when I have the tast. I ordered the Roasted Pork Loin - that's what it was, I don't recall the the dish name- it was over flavorful grits with Broccolli florettes and pomogrante seeds. Each were great texture and taste but, the pork loin it was DRY & CHEWY & out side of the seering of the outside skin the inside had none, very Dry! I tried using the other elements (to include the pomagrante seeds) to spruce up eating the pork & it help a bit until tired of chewing. I left 2 and a half pieces of the 4 cuts displayed on the plate. I DIDN'T complain & the waittress didn't ask. I suppose because seeing what remained on my plate.

We went on a Friday night and each person in my party (there was 4 of us) tried to order something they were out of. This included food and drinks. I know this happens but for them to be out of 4 separate things kind of ruined the experience. Our server also wasn't very warm and never told us the specials. Overall the look and feel of the place is really cool but the lack of items on the menu was enough for me to say I wouldn't go back.

The empenadas were excellent! The Branch Burger was also outstanding, and even cooked to the requested medium-well. So many places ask how I want my burger cooked, and then hand me a charcoal briquette after asking for medium/medium well. Other party members' dishes were equally well received. For my first visit to Branch 27, I brought my 16 year-old daughter, my 8 and 1 year-old sons, and my mom and step-dad. The baby was having a bad night, and being very fussy. One of the staff, however, came over about halfway through our meal, and just kept him distracted for a few minutes while I ate. It was not something I expected, and went above and beyond the call of duty. Top notch service!

Had a very nice brunch at Branch 27. The restuarant is very pretty with interesting art and exposed brick. There are french door that are the length of the wal that could open to the sidewalk. The Bloody Mary was good but I like them with more spice, Worcestershire sauce and celery. My husband had the cheese burger and really enjoyed it and my sons said his steak and eggs were tasty. The salad with skirt steak I ordered was tasty but overdressed (my fault for not requesting dressing on the side) and the portion of skirt steak (which was very tasty) was tiny. Overall a pleasant experience but does not stand out.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2012

The restaurant only had three tables full on a Thursday evening. They had a wide window that folded back and opened to the outside, which was different and kind of nice. We did have nine fire engines go by which made it noisy but that probably isn't likely to happen often. We advised the server we were in a rush needing to get to a play, and she did, as she later told us, code it as "fire" (meaning rush) but the kitchen apparently didn't see that and took their sweet old time in getting our food to us. As a result, we had to hurry our meal and leave food on our plates because 70 minutes apparently wasn't enough time for the kitchen (and us to eat). The food was different but just okay.

It has a warm feeling in the cold months and giant windows open up to fresh air spring through fall. You can bring your kids here or your parents or both, everyone fits in and feels they are out for a treat.
