Diner Reviews
  • "Stayed in Alexandria and wanted to try Chef Wiedmaier's restaurant since a week before we were at his other restaurant, Marcel, in Washington, DC. We had a wonderful dinner, and the service was great. Our waiter was friendly and always knew what we wanted. The crab cake in a corn veloute was delicious as was our main course which was the pork roulade. My husband had the fried sweetbreads which were also fantastic. The portions are on the large size (not complaining) so there was no room for dessert. I would definitely recommend this place for those who want a refined and upscale dining experience in Alexandria. We will absolutely be back!"

  • "The food was excellent and was the service. We celebrated a wedding anniversary that night and the restaurant did an excellent job recognizing our special night."

  • "Could not have been more pleased. The service and food were exceptional. Some in our party had a food allergy and the entire staff made sure it was addressed. The taste and flavors of all starters, entrees and desserts were all outstanding and matched the presentation (which, in many restaurants, is not the case). We were allowed ample time between courses to savor each and enjoy quiet conversation...not something you often find, even in so-called fine dining establishments. While not inexpensive, it is definitely a place to enjoy a special meal, as we shall be doing in future. Don't miss this experience."

  • "Delicious food, good ambiance, great service. The scallops were truly delicious. I particularly liked the attention to details. A special nice touch to celebrate a special occasion is much appreciated."

  • "The service at Brabo is some of the best I've seen in Alexandria. The waiter was very engaging, knew his menu inside and out and made us feel right at home. The food was delicious - the appetizers were the highlight of the meal. We really enjoyed our experience and would recommend Brabo!"

  • "Disappointed as a Weidmaier restaurant. His other spots are much better. If this restaurant was in DC, the quality of food would have been unacceptable for the price/environment. Wine list was impressive but overpriced for what they were serving. Service was good, but restaurant in general was disappointing. All of the food was not above mediocre. Probably could have made the dishes in my kitchen at home and have the same quality."

  • "We had a business dinner... 5 ppl. Some of the dishes were thoroughly impressive... Agnolotti (sublime)... Halibut (perfection)... Some where meh... Lamb... Chicken... None were the kind of dishes you'd send back, but just the kind that didn't really inspire. For a 'Belgian' place we expected more beer choices and perhaps even a tap... The wine list was nice, but we were in the mood for beer. Service was sporadic. The waiter was great, when he was around, but they also screwed up two dishes which arrived late.. Not sure if it was a front of house or back of house disconnect, but it was awkward to have 4-of-5 dishes arrive in appetizer and entrée... We may have hit them on a slow/off night, so I would try again. Desserts were nice."

  • "We started the evening in the tasting room, where the bartender made some excellent white wine selections. After several bottles, we adjourned to the main dinning room. We had a large party of 10 and were given a table in the back that gave us some privacy. Noise level was low enough that we did not have to shout. The menu selection we fantastic and prepared just right. Also excellent service.c"

  • "This was the first time my wife and I ate dinner at BRABO. We've traveled all over the world, eating at great places and we routinely eat at the top places in the Washington area. We were tremendously impressed by the service, the ambiance and the food...and, frankly, the very reasonable price. Our waiter couldn't have been better...and his associates that assisted were great well. We were received with a warm and sincere welcome and the same as we departed. We've put this on our "We'll be back list." Kudos to the chefs, the management and the staff...don't drop the ball! :O)"

  • "We've been to Brabo's many times and have never been disappointed! The staff is wonderful and especially, our waiter, Greg. He is very informative, pleasant, and answers any questions about the menu. He also gave us suggestions on wine...... Brabo's has a very relaxed atmosphere (simple but elegant) which most people enjoy when eating at a restaurant. I would highly recommend Brabo's to a friend and we hope to return again soon!"

  • "Service was as good as the food. My only complaints were the noise level and the very low chairs which puts chair sitters considerably lower than the bench sitters across the table. The night we were there the air conditioning went out and the waiter gave us another table in a bit cooler place. This could be a very romantic evening if it weren't as noisy. The food, however was memorable."

  • "I was treating my Aunt to dinner and she is a world traveler and knows about wine and food so wanted to impress her. We were treated so well by the waiter who was very helpful with the choice of wine, even letting us taste a wine by the glass. Liked that the bottle was brought out to pour, very generous and a great wine. Like of option of being able to buy a bottle to take home. The salads were wonderful. The rockfish moist and delicious and the chicken the same. Lovely vegetables and fantastic rustic salty bread. Could not have asked for anymore. Did not have room for dessert but next time. All the wait staff were gracious. My Aunt was very happy and relaxed so we had a very enjoyable evening. Keep up to good work."

  • "I travel extensively, and I am fortunate in that I am able to dine in some nice restaurants, both in Dallas, Houston, Chicago, San Francisco, etc. The food at BRABO is really good and very satisfying satisfying. While our server did a good job initially explaining the menu his support team was lacking and the long wait for our food was never explained. Nor did another waiter, who came to our table for dessert orders, seem to know very much at all. The quality of the food is terrific but next time I think I will sit at the bar. I will probably get better service."

  • "We have been to Brabo several times but were disappointed in the food this time. We are fairly sophisticated diners but almost every dish on the menu elicited questions from us. The desserts were the same thing. It is such a nice setting and we had a wonderful server but we just did not enjoy the food that much. Would love to see them dial down things down a little and we would happily return."

  • "I don't mind paying 40$ for an entree but the food here just was not up to par with the prices they charged. Appetizers and desserts were very good, but duck was tough and kind of bland and the lamb was just so-so. Short rib was probably the best out of all our dinners."

  • "This high end restaurant really focuses on bringing together great service with off the wall recipes. Everything you read on the menu, looks nothing like what you are expecting. But all of it was good. Deconstructed or foamed out, the chef goes out of their way to make the plate something you have never had before. If the price is too high for you (and it is high) try the tasting room instead. Same kitchen but a lil bit cheaper."

  • "All three choices proved delicious, and aside from the noise coming from the front bar area, the ambience was quiet enough for comfortable conversation to have over the table. Excellent!"

  • "The food and wine was great! Unfortunately, our waiter was more interested in the guys at the table next to us. Valet parking is horrible. They had one guy covering the restaurant and hotel. It took 20 minutes to get our car, because the guy had to deliver luggage to a room first. Regardless of these two issues, we will return."

  • "This was our second time here and it was as good as the first. The asparagus and poached egg appetizer was fabulous. My sweet and sour duck with bok choy and rhubarb was one of the best magret de canard I've tasted. And I've tasted duck all over the world. The strawberry creme brûlée was also world class...unbelievably good. The only minor beef -- lack of a good salad. The only real option was a Green Goddess salad with shaved somethings --- radishes maybe. Didn't care for it. Would have loved a classic caesar. But the wine was wonderful and the waiter very good. All in all -- 5 stars."

  • "Our party of four had a lovely evening thoroughly enjoying the tasting menu - each course as good as the former. Service was second to none (we've had Greg that last two times we've dined with you and he's been a pleasure to dine with both times) and not a bad thing can be said about the Brabo experience."

  • "Quality of our dinners have been erratic. We were very disappointed with our recent dining experience. My wife's pork entree was poorly prepared, it was overcooked and dry. U steak was prepared properly but the quality of the cut did not reflect the cost. "

  • "The Old Town does not thrive in upscale culinary experience, until Brebo arrived to King Street. Give it an opportunity and you will not be dissatisfied. "

  • "Outstanding seasonal ingredients treated with love and proper technique yield delicious mouthwatering dishes. Our recent meal (May 2014) only lacked a little "zip" to make the dishes extraordinary. Overall everything was solid, if not a bit safe and traditional. I have experienced Chef Weidemer's cuisine at several restaurants and he is truly one of DC's best chefs. Wine list has something for everyone and ample depth. A "must try" when in Old Towne Alexandria. "

  • "Hadn't been there in a while. First thing we noticed was the lack of Belgium beers. Then came the menu, where's the steak frites? The Belgium flare has been replaced by an overly ambitious tasting menu on which they can't deliver. Frites were cold. Ugh! World's smallest cheese plate. The place is beginning to look rundown. Seats need to be reupholstered. It's sad to see one of our favorite places slipping and we won't be going back anytime soon."

  • "I was visiting Alexandria on mother's day weekend and stayed at the Lorien Hotel and Spa. Making reservations at BRABO in advance was a good plan because they were very busy! Although I was dining alone, the restaurant staff made me feel at home and seemed to expedite my service without seeming rushed. The wine list is extensive and had excellent half bottle choices - perfect for dining alone. The Alaskan Halibut was cooked to perfection with a light broth and tender crisp vegetables. The coconut sorbet was simply divine. The meal was expensive, but worth the spurge. The one drawback was the noise level, so an intimate conversation might be a challenge. "

  • "Crispy sweetbreads and strawberry-ginger-brothed foi gras made for an amazing meal. Small portions and a bit on the pricey side assures that it is a special occasion venue."
