A word from Boxing Room
Boxing Room opened in 2011 in the former 19th-century Standard Shirts Factory, located in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood. Executive Chef Justin Simoneaux, a Southern Louisiana native, celebrates the Cajun and Creole dishes of New Orleans and coastal Louisiana, coupled with seasonal Northern California ingredients. Additionally, Boxing Room offers oysters from the raw bar, and an extensive selection of beer and wine on tap. Since opening, Boxing Room has been named one of San Francisco’s Best New Restaurants by 7x7 magazine, and San Francisco magazine gave the restaurant a 3-star review. Boxing Room is open daily for dinner, lunch during the week, and brunch on the weekend. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Good New Orleans food Could be larger portions but very good. Nice service"

  • "The food was good, we had the pork belly, fried gator, beignets, and cobbler. The pork belly was my favorite dish, and the aioli that came with the gator was delicious. The beignets were a tasty treat, but the cobbler was only average. The menu is small, so going here regularly would lead very quickly to repeating dishes, and the servings are not particularly large so this wouldn't be a great place for a huge meal. A good restaurant with good food and an interesting theme, but the menu limitation is pretty significant. Service was great, ambiance is fun and interesting, and overall we had a lovely dining experience."

  • "Great spot for lunch and or a special occasion. Tasty food with a Cajun twist. Certainly a new repeat choice on my restaurant list."

  • "The restaurant interior is beautiful and well laid out . . . but the food and service were lacking. We were there on a Sunday night (6:00) and only 4 tables were occupied. We started with the Hushpuppies with pepper jelly and they were fantastic. But then it went down hill from there with the Classic Louisiana Menu / Entree's. We had the Crawfish Etouffee (half order) * Smoked Chicken & Andouille Gumbo and the Duck & Sausage Jambalaya * It's never good when you have to add hot sauce and salt to a meal (at the table) and say . . . try it now. The wait staff had no passion for what they do and were simply delivering plates. We will not be returning."

  • "This was my first time there. I went for lunch. I had the chopped salad, and the beans and sausage. Both were very good. My lunch partner and I lingered for 1 and 1/2 and did not feel rushed."

  • "Service and desserts were fantastic (fruit cobbler and nana's pudding). I wasn't at all thrilled with receiving 3 small shrimp along with a tiny plate of okra and peppers. It was as if I were receiving the appetizer portion of my entree. Not sure that I will be back. I did see quite a few burgers coming out of the kitchen, so maybe that's the way to go."

  • "The food is excellent and the prices are fair. They are very accommodating. We arrived 20 mins late and were seated immediately and still had time to spare. The service was excellent, the food was very tasty. Great beverage list."

  • "We love this place! We come here a few times a month. The service is spectacular and the wait staff is always super friendly and informative. The duck & sausage jambalaya & the smoked chicken & andouille gumbo are amazing. This is a great place to try new things like the alligator. We get the boudin balls and hushpuppies every time."

  • "Friends and I were on our way to the Kermit Ruffins concert nearby, and a friend suggested this place, as I'd requested Cajun cuisine. The food was tasty, Black Eyed Pea & Boiled Peanut Dip w/ chips is a great starter, the atmosphere lively - if a touch more elevated than anticipated - and the drinks got us ready for a night of dancing to incredible music!! Our main server was either having an off night, or suffers from personality paralysis. #blesshisheart We were served the rabbit rillette by mistake, much to the delight of my friends, and me, when it wasn't on my bill. I'll definitely come back when I'm craving some Cajun cuisine in the City by the Bay."

  • "after the symphony this was a great place to catch up with friends - open late, great wine on tap, great food - highly recommend"

  • "Very pleasant place with flavorful Cajun food. Dishes were just the right size, each one with a unique, pleasantly spiced taste. Good service with consideration for the timing of our after dinner plans"

  • "Only 5 minute walk from the Symphony and Opera, the Boxing Room is the perfect pre-show dinner spot. They offer carafes of wine (4 big glasses) for reasonable prices$36-42 and have a fun menu of southern soul food, including Fried Gator! Yum! The service was great as well. Our server was very nice and quick which was important for getting to the show on time. Overall, great experience!"

  • "We had lunch at 2pm. Boiled peanuts, vegetarian pasta, Gumbo. Heaven!!"
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "But unfortunately didn't. Our server was very kind and attentive. The ambience was beautiful, loved the open air kitchen and the woodwork. Everything else was subpar. The fried gator could have been fried anything. The shrimp and grits had very little flavor. The gumbo tasted burnt. The coffee was disgusting and looked oily. It's a shame because we really wanted to like it."

  • "If you love New Orleans and the food, this is the place. Hush puppies, Po Boys, and oysters are there! The wait staff was not very friendly but we were there 11'ish on a Sunday. We had the breakfast Po Boy and thought it was the best brunch we have ever had. It is located near the Opera House and Symphony and it's fun and good."

  • "Take this critique with a grain of salt from a southern girl who is extremely picky when it comes to anything fried! First of all, their hush puppies were one the best takes I've had in CA. Fried chicken was moist, crispy and tasty, but not southern good. The gravy was amazing! They give you you complimentary pimento cheese spread once you're seated. Points for that! However, points taken for not being a good, basic dip. All in all, I'd say it's really good comfort food that is, (in my opinion) trying too hard to fusion southeast with west. 100% worth the visit, though. If you're southern, don't come expecting true south. If you're a western, come expecting really good food."

  • "I lived in New Orleans and just had the best red beans and rice I ever had at the Boxing Room. What a find! Great food and service. The raw oysters were divine. Nice vibe, several Abita beers on tap. Yum."

  • "Although I'm not a fan of New Orleans Cajun/Creole cuisine, the Boxing Room does produce some interesting and tasty dishes. Some of the favorites, like fried alligator, I will never experience. The gumbo is quite good, and the homemade (I think) bourbon ice cream is a keeper. It's convenient to the Civic Center, opera and symphony, and easy in and out for a quick bite before a performance."

  • "I was surprised the joint was only beer and wine. However, their extensive list made it ok. My friend and I ate mostly small dishes. The fried alligator was notable for the lemons and dipping sauce. Delicious. The boudin balls were so good my friend ordered another helping. I moved on to the taurine, which was excellent. The pickled cherries and mustard matching perfectly. Next time, we'll try the fried chicken."

  • "It was our 1st time for Cajun cuisine, and it was much better than expected, I loved it! The gumbo and jambalaya were so good, and the bread pudding very good. I must say the best thing of this place, however, is the service, amazing friendly and promptly service, we felt pampered all the time. We had such a great time!"

  • "Terrific melon/cucumber salad; addicting black-eyed pea/peanut dip and house made chips; to-die-for hush puppies...and those were just the starters! We will go back to Boxing Room ASAP!"

  • "The reason we chose this place for my fiancé's birthday dinner was the "fried gator" we love trying new things! It was awesome and the oysters were really good as well! Love a place that has yummy apps! Dinner was ok we have smoked ham and the jambalaya. Over all a decent experience. They could have wiped the table down after dinner and before dessert (my fiancé got sauce on his arm in the interim) but other than that staff was friendly and good timing for the most part!"

  • "We had a great dinner after symphony matinee on a Sunday. Very tasty food, good value, sizeable portions, friendly attentive service, and knowledgeable waiter. I had the lamb special and my daughter had the fried chicken--both were delicious. Beignets were just like the ones I had in New Orleans. Yumm!"

  • "I've done brunch, dinner and lunch here. My dinning time preferences are also in that order. The brunch menu seems more spot on than the lunch menu, but they're all good. I've eaten here about 8 or 9 times over the past two years. The servings aren't huge, but most items are calorie dense and they have a great beer menu. It's hard to fault the service for anything. Best recommendation is that a pre opera or symphony reservation is hard to score here, so reserve several weeks in advance."

  • "Great place to go before any events in the Civic Center area where one wants to dine. We've been here for both lunch, brunch and dinner and it has always been good with lots of selections. This time it was brunch again starting with the baked oysters that were such a treat (and huge, too). Since there were 3, we had one each, and it was a treat. The biscuits were light and fluffy - yum, the eggs done to perfection. Thank you for making our brunch such a treat!"

  • "Staff was so friendly and very efficient. Food was delicious and I was so impressed with the bold southern flavors. Collard greens were my favorite!!"

  • "We went before the symphony for dinner. The staff was very kind and accommodating; we especially appreciated the waiter's suggestions regarding wine pairings. The food was delicious, and food presentations were very attractive to the eye."

  • "The food here is fine. It's tasty and enjoyable. But the service was the standout. It was attentive and fast. They were very willing to accommodate our tight schedule. Plus, we asked the server about some extra charge on our bill, and she explained that it helped to cover healthcare benefits for her. She also mentioned that the Absinthe group that owns the restaurant treats its servers very well. That's worth supporting!"

  • "Ideal location for a pre-opera/symphony dinner. Cajun dishes were very good. interesting appetizers. Halibut was overcooked."

  • "We found another great fried chicken dish in the City!! Overall, the food was very tasty and generous portion. We will be back for sure !!"

  • "Small menu, but interesting selections. I do not enjoy spicy food and there are always choices that I enjoy. This time I had the salmon, prepared perfectly. My husband had the alligator and the jambalaya -- each was well prepared. No cocktails available, to my husband's chagrin."

  • "The Boxing Room is a must! Everything is delicious. The decor is urban contemporary. The wine list is great and there are tons of local brews available on tap. Try the fried chicken. Try the collared greens. Try Granny G's Burger. And be sure to finish with some delicious beignets. You'll be glad you did."

  • "Food is awesome. I just didn't understand why it was so hard to get a table on open table when the whole place was free the entire time I was there."

  • "We've been to the restaurant several times before a concert at Davies Hall. Our experiences have been very pleasant, but not Sunday 6/15. Our waitress wasn't attentive, the bowl of gumbo had spilt on the plate and coffee spilt on the saucer. Refill of coffee was offered after the check was presented. On previous visits the wait staff would refill our water glasses when it was low. Overall the food was tasty, but the service made this experience less than desirable. It was Father's Day - she didn't acknowledge or ask my husband if he's celebrating the day."

  • "Boxing Room has become our go-to restaurant prior to Civic Center cultural events. I love the food. The jambalaya is one of the most interesting and flavorful I have ever had. The fried chicken, moist and juicy. Pork terrine, wonderful with the pickled cherries. And the pickles themselves? Delicious. Gumbo is a bit smoky for my taste, but clearly started with a decent roux, nice and rich. Also a terrific wine and beer menu. I also deeply appreciate a restaurant that is so friendly, comfortable, and not combustibly loud so that I can enjoy dinner with my companions."

  • "I ate here last Tuesday before going to see showboat at the sf opera house. The dinner menue doesn't start till 5pm so we sat at the bar. The bartender was Friendly and I found both the beer and wine list to be diverse. The restaurant Has a wonderful open feel to it even later in the evening when it was full. Our party Was a group of 4 myself, my mother and two of her nursing friends. One friend in Particular asked about 5 questions per menue item. Our waitress Charlotte was Great! She really took her time to make she that our friend understood what she Was going to get. I was very impressed with her menue knowledge and patience. The Food was good but nothing over the top. The fried chicken is worth a try. All together A great choice!"

  • "My daughter and I shared two starters and two small entrees and a dessert. All were very good, although I would have liked a little less batter on the alligator...I wanted to really taste it and I could not. The sauces were great with both the alligator and the boudin balls (also very good). The lemon verbona ice cream was a little to herbal for me, and we both thought a good vanilla would have been better with the hot berry crumble! We would both go again...great value!"
