A word from Boxing Room
Boxing Room opened in 2011 in the former 19th-century Standard Shirts Factory, located in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood. Executive Chef Justin Simoneaux, a Southern Louisiana native, celebrates the Cajun and Creole dishes of New Orleans and coastal Louisiana, coupled with seasonal Northern California ingredients. Additionally, Boxing Room offers oysters from the raw bar, and an extensive selection of beer and wine on tap. Since opening, Boxing Room has been named one of San Francisco’s Best New Restaurants by 7x7 magazine, and San Francisco magazine gave the restaurant a 3-star review.   • "I was surprised the joint was only beer and wine. However, their extensive list made it ok. My friend and I ate mostly small dishes. The fried alligator was notable for the lemons and dipping sauce. Delicious. The boudin balls were so good my friend ordered another helping. I moved on to the taurine, which was excellent. The pickled cherries and mustard matching perfectly. Next time, we'll try the fried chicken."

  • "It was our 1st time for Cajun cuisine, and it was much better than expected, I loved it! The gumbo and jambalaya were so good, and the bread pudding very good. I must say the best thing of this place, however, is the service, amazing friendly and promptly service, we felt pampered all the time. We had such a great time!"

  • "The reason we chose this place for my fiancé's birthday dinner was the "fried gator" we love trying new things! It was awesome and the oysters were really good as well! Love a place that has yummy apps! Dinner was ok we have smoked ham and the jambalaya. Over all a decent experience. They could have wiped the table down after dinner and before dessert (my fiancé got sauce on his arm in the interim) but other than that staff was friendly and good timing for the most part!"

I had the lamb special and my daughter had the fried chicken--both were delicious. Beignets were just like the ones I had in New Orleans. Yumm!"

  • "Great place to go before any events in the Civic Center area where one wants to dine. We've been here for both lunch, brunch and dinner and it has always been good with lots of selections. This time it was brunch again starting with the baked oysters that were such a treat (and huge, too). Since there were 3, we had one each, and it was a treat. The biscuits were light and fluffy - yum, the eggs done to perfection. Thank you for making our brunch such a treat!"

  • "I've done brunch, dinner and lunch here. My dinning time preferences are also in that order. The brunch menu seems more spot on than the lunch menu, but they're all good. I've eaten here about 8 or 9 times over the past two years. The servings aren't huge, but most items are calorie dense and they have a great beer menu. It's hard to fault the service for anything. Best recommendation is that a pre opera or symphony reservation is hard to score here, so reserve several weeks in advance."

  • "The food here is fine. It's tasty and enjoyable. But the service was the standout. It was attentive and fast. They were very willing to accommodate our tight schedule. Plus, we asked the server about some extra charge on our bill, and she explained that it helped to cover healthcare benefits for her. She also mentioned that the Absinthe group that owns the restaurant treats its servers very well. That's worth supporting!"

  • "Boxing Room has become our go-to restaurant prior to Civic Center cultural events. I love the food. The jambalaya is one of the most interesting and flavorful I have ever had. The fried chicken, moist and juicy. Pork terrine, wonderful with the pickled cherries. And the pickles themselves? Delicious. Gumbo is a bit smoky for my taste, but clearly started with a decent roux, nice and rich. Also a terrific wine and beer menu. I also deeply appreciate a restaurant that is so friendly, comfortable, and not combustibly loud so that I can enjoy dinner with my companions."

  • "We've been to the restaurant several times before a concert at Davies Hall. Our experiences have been very pleasant, but not Sunday 6/15. Our waitress wasn't attentive, the bowl of gumbo had spilt on the plate and coffee spilt on the saucer. Refill of coffee was offered after the check was presented. On previous visits the wait staff would refill our water glasses when it was low. Overall the food was tasty, but the service made this experience less than desirable. It was Father's Day - she didn't acknowledge or ask my husband if he's celebrating the day."

  • "I ate here last Tuesday before going to see showboat at the sf opera house. The dinner menue doesn't start till 5pm so we sat at the bar. The bartender was Friendly and I found both the beer and wine list to be diverse. The restaurant Has a wonderful open feel to it even later in the evening when it was full. Our party Was a group of 4 myself, my mother and two of her nursing friends. One friend in Particular asked about 5 questions per menue item. Our waitress Charlotte was Great! She really took her time to make she that our friend understood what she Was going to get. I was very impressed with her menue knowledge and patience. The Food was good but nothing over the top. The fried chicken is worth a try. All together A great choice!"

  • "We enjoyed the different cuisine from the usual California fare. The catfish was excellent, great side dishes, and the deserts were exceptional. Many wine choices although the Chardonnay list by carafe or glass was limited. I'd highly suggest getting a bottle or carafe as we did have some sticker shock when the bill came and found the per glass wine really added to the bill."

  • "My daughter and I shared two starters and two small entrees and a dessert. All were very good, although I would have liked a little less batter on the alligator...I wanted to really taste it and I could not. The sauces were great with both the alligator and the boudin balls (also very good). The lemon verbona ice cream was a little to herbal for me, and we both thought a good vanilla would have been better with the hot berry crumble! We would both go again...great value!"

  • "I really wanted to like this restaurant since my friend really wanted to eat there. We had brunch before going to the opera. I ordered 2 eggs, scrambled with garlic potatoes and andouille sausage. This meal also included a buttermilk biscuit. It seemed to take a long time to get the food. I know they were busy, but really there's nothing difficult about scrambled eggs, potatoes and sausage. The eggs were almost cold when I got them and I couldn't seem to get enough salt and pepper on them....totally tasteless! The potatoes were mushy and overcooked. The sausage and the biscuit were actually rather good, although, I was surprised that I didn't get any butter or jam for on the biscuit. It was served just plain and dry. "

  • "Great place for brunch before the symphony. We usually get three or four things to share, which is more than enough food and gives a variety of tastes. If you're not into sharing, the bigger plates are also excellent. The only negative is if you get "table neighbors" who talk a little too loudly - the tables are very close and don't provide a lot of quiet conversation space."

The service is attentive, but if you're in no hurry at busy times, you might feel some pressure to get on with it. They'll be around for some time to come. It passes my bang for the buck test."

My wife had mushroom and asparagus bread pudding that she did not care for. You either like Cajun food or don't. Specialty food is a risk. I wish the Boxing Room good luck. "

  • "Ive been here several times, and was very pleased but this time they were quite lacking. I took a friend who is vegetarian and lactose free. She loved Cajun food however. Our server was a bit bewildered by her request for the salmon done extra spicy and cooked in oil. Come on, its San Fran. He comes back and says they cannot make the dish spicy and cannot cook it in oil. Really? A cajun pace that wont kick it up a notch? BAM! Right cross to the jaw! Well, I think, at least my Granny G will be good... but it was dry overcooked and well... on par with the service. A vicious 1-2 combo. I dont know if they just stumbled to the mat, or they are down for the count, but this round the Boxing Room is not looking like a contender. "
