A word from Boxing Room
Boxing Room opened in 2011 in the former 19th-century Standard Shirts Factory, located in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood. Executive Chef Justin Simoneaux, a Southern Louisiana native, celebrates the Cajun and Creole dishes of New Orleans and coastal Louisiana, coupled with seasonal Northern California ingredients. Additionally, Boxing Room offers oysters from the raw bar, and an extensive selection of beer and wine on tap. Since opening, Boxing Room has been named one of San Francisco’s Best New Restaurants by 7x7 magazine, and San Francisco magazine gave the restaurant a 3-star review.   • "We used to love Boxing Room but it has gone WAY DOWN HILL. For brunch we shared the frittata and gumbo and both were bland and forgettable. The frittata was so dry we sent it back and the 2nd round was no better. The "large" portion of gumbo was a small soup bowl, $14.00 and sad. We asked for corn bread or something to break up the blandness and they only have corn bread for dinner (even though its on the menu!).... Our server never checked in on us and took 20 min to come back with our re-cooked eggs. We saw food sit on the shelf in the kitchen while diners stared at it waiting for their order to be brought out to the tables... Sad because we would really like to love this place.."

  • "Some girlfriends and I went to The Boxing Room for Sunday brunch. We've made a reservation and were seated a few minutes after our reservations time. The restaurant has a great vibe along with a nice decor. Our waiter has provided excellent service and the entire meal from appetizer to dessert were delicious. All of us ordered a different po boy on the menu and they were all yummy. We would definitely come back again."

The stand-out however was the oyster bar with a selection oysters from 6 different regions. I had the "whole animal preparation" for dinner which consisted of this very spicy pork sausage over cottage fries and red cabbage. A wonderful dining experience - Highly recommend."

  • "The food was good, we had the pork belly, fried gator, beignets, and cobbler. The pork belly was my favorite dish, and the aioli that came with the gator was delicious. The beignets were a tasty treat, but the cobbler was only average. The menu is small, so going here regularly would lead very quickly to repeating dishes, and the servings are not particularly large so this wouldn't be a great place for a huge meal. A good restaurant with good food and an interesting theme, but the menu limitation is pretty significant. Service was great, ambiance is fun and interesting, and overall we had a lovely dining experience."

  • "The restaurant interior is beautiful and well laid out . . . but the food and service were lacking. We were there on a Sunday night (6:00) and only 4 tables were occupied. We started with the Hushpuppies with pepper jelly and they were fantastic. But then it went down hill from there with the Classic Louisiana Menu / Entree's. We had the Crawfish Etouffee (half order) * Smoked Chicken & Andouille Gumbo and the Duck & Sausage Jambalaya * It's never good when you have to add hot sauce and salt to a meal (at the table) and say . . . try it now. The wait staff had no passion for what they do and were simply delivering plates. We will not be returning."

  • "Service and desserts were fantastic (fruit cobbler and nana's pudding). I wasn't at all thrilled with receiving 3 small shrimp along with a tiny plate of okra and peppers. It was as if I were receiving the appetizer portion of my entree. Not sure that I will be back. I did see quite a few burgers coming out of the kitchen, so maybe that's the way to go."

  • "Friends and I were on our way to the Kermit Ruffins concert nearby, and a friend suggested this place, as I'd requested Cajun cuisine. The food was tasty, Black Eyed Pea & Boiled Peanut Dip w/ chips is a great starter, the atmosphere lively - if a touch more elevated than anticipated - and the drinks got us ready for a night of dancing to incredible music!! Our main server was either having an off night, or suffers from personality paralysis. #blesshisheart We were served the rabbit rillette by mistake, much to the delight of my friends, and me, when it wasn't on my bill. I'll definitely come back when I'm craving some Cajun cuisine in the City by the Bay."

  • "Only 5 minute walk from the Symphony and Opera, the Boxing Room is the perfect pre-show dinner spot. They offer carafes of wine (4 big glasses) for reasonable prices$36-42 and have a fun menu of southern soul food, including Fried Gator! Yum! The service was great as well. Our server was very nice and quick which was important for getting to the show on time. Overall, great experience!"

  • "But unfortunately didn't. Our server was very kind and attentive. The ambience was beautiful, loved the open air kitchen and the woodwork. Everything else was subpar. The fried gator could have been fried anything. The shrimp and grits had very little flavor. The gumbo tasted burnt. The coffee was disgusting and looked oily. It's a shame because we really wanted to like it."

  • "If you love New Orleans and the food, this is the place. Hush puppies, Po Boys, and oysters are there! The wait staff was not very friendly but we were there 11'ish on a Sunday. We had the breakfast Po Boy and thought it was the best brunch we have ever had. It is located near the Opera House and Symphony and it's fun and good."

  • "Take this critique with a grain of salt from a southern girl who is extremely picky when it comes to anything fried! First of all, their hush puppies were one the best takes I've had in CA. Fried chicken was moist, crispy and tasty, but not southern good. The gravy was amazing! They give you you complimentary pimento cheese spread once you're seated. Points for that! However, points taken for not being a good, basic dip. All in all, I'd say it's really good comfort food that is, (in my opinion) trying too hard to fusion southeast with west. 100% worth the visit, though. If you're southern, don't come expecting true south. If you're a western, come expecting really good food."

  • "Although I'm not a fan of New Orleans Cajun/Creole cuisine, the Boxing Room does produce some interesting and tasty dishes. Some of the favorites, like fried alligator, I will never experience. The gumbo is quite good, and the homemade (I think) bourbon ice cream is a keeper. It's convenient to the Civic Center, opera and symphony, and easy in and out for a quick bite before a performance."

  • "I was surprised the joint was only beer and wine. However, their extensive list made it ok. My friend and I ate mostly small dishes. The fried alligator was notable for the lemons and dipping sauce. Delicious. The boudin balls were so good my friend ordered another helping. I moved on to the taurine, which was excellent. The pickled cherries and mustard matching perfectly. Next time, we'll try the fried chicken."

  • "The reason we chose this place for my fiancé's birthday dinner was the "fried gator" we love trying new things! It was awesome and the oysters were really good as well! Love a place that has yummy apps! Dinner was ok we have smoked ham and the jambalaya. Over all a decent experience. They could have wiped the table down after dinner and before dessert (my fiancé got sauce on his arm in the interim) but other than that staff was friendly and good timing for the most part!"

  • "I've done brunch, dinner and lunch here. My dinning time preferences are also in that order. The brunch menu seems more spot on than the lunch menu, but they're all good. I've eaten here about 8 or 9 times over the past two years. The servings aren't huge, but most items are calorie dense and they have a great beer menu. It's hard to fault the service for anything. Best recommendation is that a pre opera or symphony reservation is hard to score here, so reserve several weeks in advance."

  • "Great place to go before any events in the Civic Center area where one wants to dine. We've been here for both lunch, brunch and dinner and it has always been good with lots of selections. This time it was brunch again starting with the baked oysters that were such a treat (and huge, too). Since there were 3, we had one each, and it was a treat. The biscuits were light and fluffy - yum, the eggs done to perfection. Thank you for making our brunch such a treat!"

  • "The food here is fine. It's tasty and enjoyable. But the service was the standout. It was attentive and fast. They were very willing to accommodate our tight schedule. Plus, we asked the server about some extra charge on our bill, and she explained that it helped to cover healthcare benefits for her. She also mentioned that the Absinthe group that owns the restaurant treats its servers very well. That's worth supporting!"
