A word from Boxing Room
Boxing Room opened in 2011 in the former 19th-century Standard Shirts Factory, located in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood. Executive Chef Justin Simoneaux, a Southern Louisiana native, celebrates the Cajun and Creole dishes of New Orleans and coastal Louisiana, coupled with seasonal Northern California ingredients. Additionally, Boxing Room offers oysters from the raw bar, and an extensive selection of beer and wine on tap. Since opening, Boxing Room has been named one of San Francisco’s Best New Restaurants by 7x7 magazine, and San Francisco magazine gave the restaurant a 3-star review. Boxing Room is open daily for dinner, lunch during the week, and brunch on the weekend.

Too bland, to much rice, not to rich flavors I had hoped for. Perhaps I should have tried the main menu. The service was great, atmosphere lively and pleasant.

Fried gator was great. Gulf flounder was better. Sparkling rose' was a little flat. The fried chicken was a severe disappointment. Waiter was dismissive. They comped the chicken.

Enjoyed brunch here before Symphony Sunday concert. Great service and mindful of our show time. Good selection of beer and wine. Best gumbo we've had in SF. Po'boys great. Hush puppies too doughy, try more cornmeal and less flour, but good flavor, beignets excellent. Will return for sure for another taste of Louisiana. Band was good, not too loud and no drums!

Burger with wedges was very good from the meat prep to the bun and ample supporting cast, e.g., pickles. Decent beer on tap, too. Confusion by staff was less appealing, however. Perfecto location by both symphony and opera.

Four of us had lunch at Boxing Room before a symphony matinee. Two people ordered the tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich. The soup was good, but the sandwich was two enormous slices of bread with almost no cheese. Tasteless! Everyone knows how to make a good grilled cheese sandwich. What happened?

I don't to go out to dinner much but when I do I want to eat something that I wouldn't make at home. This restaurant fit the bill. We had the duck jambalaya and the goat sausage special. Dinners were artistically served. Great service--though the waiter lost points in the end by calling us "you guys", on of my pet peeves.

I really appreciate the outstanding service we received this past Saturday evening from the host and our servers. They were super-accommodating to our family. We had two small kids with us plus a stroller and they did everything they could to make us comfortable. We really appreciated it. Also, the food was excellent as usual. The shrimp po boy was terrific -- the shrimp tasted so fresh was cooked perfectly (not over-cooked and not under-cooked). The french roll was perfect. I really enjoy this place. Thanks so much!

We met for dinner with some friends that had just come from SFO on a Friday night. Bonus - parking garage across the street. We each had something different and shared: pork bellies and beans was fabulous, the fried chicken was perfectly cooked and not greasy, the flounder was delicately spiced and very tender, and the duck & sausage jambalaya was an incredible find. They had a wonderful selection of oysters - all west coast (fine with me) and all delicious. Beer and wine list was very good, and our waiter was attentive and more knowledgeable about the beer/wine list and menu. Although the restaurant was full, service was great - attentive and FAST. A block away from Hayes - great after dinner walking/people watching. Friends loved it!

Finally returned for the gator, which was good, but the fried lemons that accompanied it were outstanding. Gumbo was great, as always. The evening's Boucherie was smoked pork, which was a bit too salty, but good none the less--the presentation with romano beans, red peppers, and potatoes was beautiful. The beignets and chocolate espresso cream were delicious and port recommendation was an excellent match, but so was an espresso. Noise level assessment may be a bit misleading, since we left about 7:00 PM.

I have dined at this Southern Style restaurant over half a dozen times. The full height windows enlarge the space. Have a good beer selections on tap and in the bottle. Always love the oysters and the fried chicken. This time, I had the gumbo. It is over smoked, got the bitterness after taste. The price is quite high for a small portion even they call it the entree size. It is more like an appetizer size.

Fully intended to order dessert. The entire dessert list was grand. But I ordered the fried chicken, and it was a massive plate of food - we should have shared it. Came with delish collard greens and a very smokey gravy (on the side) for the super-creamy mashed potatoes. An incredible dish I will struggle NOT to order next time because I'll want to try out other dishes. But definitely YOU should go for it!

I could find no fault in the food. Enjoyed it all. But the portions left us hungry and 5 of us ended up with a $200 bill. I had the gumbo ($16), which turned out to be like HALF a portion. My brother's salad ($8) was more like a "side" salad, sparse. The burger looked good, (price unknown). The portions made us feel duped.

We used to love Boxing Room but it has gone WAY DOWN HILL. For brunch we shared the frittata and gumbo and both were bland and forgettable. The frittata was so dry we sent it back and the 2nd round was no better. The "large" portion of gumbo was a small soup bowl, $14.00 and sad. We asked for corn bread or something to break up the blandness and they only have corn bread for dinner (even though its on the menu!).... Our server never checked in on us and took 20 min to come back with our re-cooked eggs. We saw food sit on the shelf in the kitchen while diners stared at it waiting for their order to be brought out to the tables... Sad because we would really like to love this place..

Enjoyed a wonderful early dinner at the Boxing Room. Service was excellent, and the beer and wine menu was impressive. The stand-out however was the oyster bar with a selection oysters from 6 different regions.
