  • "Six months old and humming along. Great food with knowledgable waitstaff. We will be back"

  • "We arrived early so we sat at the bar for a couple drinks. The bartender was so friendly and the service so fast that we stayed at the bar for dinner as well. His food recommendations were fantastic, the drinks we got were alright but that's much more to preference. The dessert menu was to die for. We couldn't pick so we go two and both were amazing."

  • "One of the best restaurants on College Ave; and Ive eaten at them all; my only complaint is that I cant get a reservation to go back!"

  • "poor service, argumentative re: us coming at 9:30pm only for drinks and dessert, which we stated as soon as we arrived. server seemed very upset with that. poor service, would come to our table then talk to another server who passed by - all very odd and the 4 of us saw all the bad service from her as retribution for not having dinner. there's more, but really, we will not return and will not recommend to our neighbors and friends. what made it all the more offensive was that when the bill was brought to us she was suddenly very nice, telling us about brunch, please come again, etc etc. we have seen many restaurants in this spot come and go over the years which we have supported, but not this one."

  • "We generally liked this place and had pretty good service at a nice table. There's some room for improvement if they wanna stay around. Service started a little slow but picked up by the main course. Drinks were tasty. According to the menu, plates are meant to be shared however most dishes we ordered came in three. Even numbers would've been nice. $50 ribeye was tasty, but really overpriced and way too fatty. I've had much better steaks for less money. Bone marrow was delicious but came in three. Three great biscuits. Three grilled artichokes. We enjoyed our evening but won't likely be frequent diners given the prices and portions."

  • "We thought the food was quite good, well prepared and high quality. We were a bit disappointed about the size of the portions, they were quite small even for "small" plates, making it hard to gauge how much to order for a table of 4."

  • "Very noisy. Very slow service and bland food. It took an hour to get the first salad. The veggie came after the meet was servedm which was served half hour after the first salad."

  • "Had to shout across the table. Not relaxing. Did not hear all that was said. What happened to a restaurant relying on the food and service which this one has. Why make the environment so loud? I hear people like it . Makes us feel we are in a hot place. Just saying this was a place for great food and service but bring your phone and text across the table."

  • "Great service! Food was very fun as all plates are meant to be shared. Would definitely recommend!"

  • "A group of 4 adults and 2 kids ate at Box and Bells. The food was inconsistent. The burger and short ribs were amazing, everything else was fine but I had much higher expectations. The drinks were good - fun drink list. The service was really poor. It is all shared dishes, yet the waiter did not give clear feedback on how much we should order for a group our size despite asking if we had enough over and over again. Then when our meal came he didn't bring one of the meat dishes until we followed up, then said "you never ordered that." Maybe he didn't hear me, but isn't the diner always right? Because of the fabulous drinks, great vibe, and awesome burger, I will try it again and hope for a different waiter."

  • "Not a huge fan of the red lighting, but the food here is for real; hardcore goods in a casual way. There's great reverence for meat and fat. The burger was one of those that comes out and you're like, "that's it? it's so small" then you take one bight and are completely sated as everything you could have wanted out of the meal has already been fulfilled by that one bite in all of its aged beef fat soft-and juicy-on-a-gentle-but-snappy-pretzel-bun goodness and you feel no need to eat any more of it because you are already perfectly happy with the one you just took but then you realize you still have 10-15 more equally amazing bites that you get to go through before it's gone. And then you want to pass out, in a daze of satisfaction."

  • "I had a very pleasant experience here. First timer and I've heard many great things and it lived up to that billing. Water was always full the food came out fast but we never felt rushed. We were seated right when we got there without much of a wait. Parking was a little tough but we got lucky. I would suggest coming a few minutes earlier to find parking. Food was amazing. We obviously over ordered but everything we ordered was delicious. The burger is probably one of the best I've ever had. Beer was amazing esp the linden st brew out of Oakland. Please dine here. You will not regret."

  • "We picked Box and Bells for special occasion dinner. We ordered the beet salad, the fried sardine, the mussels, the short ribs and a side of brussels sprouts. We had high hopes, every dish had too much oil, butter, and/or cream. Don't get me wrong, we love fat, meat, and cream. My gallbladder is a champion. Maybe our expectations were too high, or maybe it's the assortment of things we ordered, but just felt that the butter and oil overwhelmed the taste of the food. Even dessert - red velvet cake - was good but not great. It was accompanied by a nice gelato, but when I ate them together in the same bite, the whole thing tasted like an ordinary ice cream cake."

  • "Beautiful restaurant, food and cocktails were very good. Hamburger was good but not exceptional. Appetizers were creative and very tasty. We thought it was too pricey compared to other similar places- i.e. A Cote, A 16, Wood tavern."

  • "The portions were small while the prices were disproportionately high. Not worth the high cost. Will definitely not return"

  • "Great cocktails. Food was good with vegie, seafood, and meat choices but we must have chosen options with small portions and had to add a couple of sharing plates at the end. The sharing plates were brought out in odd order, with oysters brought after a hot dish. Using the whole animal is a definite theme here."

  • "We had an excellent meal on our first visit. The waitress was attentive and helpful with the family style options. We opened with Fried Chicken and Cabbage Salad appetizers. The hamburger was one of tastiest in a long time and the short ribs were the best. The Brussels sprouts was the only off note with a burnt tone."

  • "This neighborhood gem is one of the best restaurants in the Bay Area. The service sets it apart from the rest while the food, ambience, etc is all good. We've been three times now and it's a go-to place for my wife and me."
    Dined on 3/9/2014
  • "The food is nice, rustic, well made. Nothing very unique but very solid. The background music is a bit too loud which contributes to an overall loud background noise. The service felt a bit rushed."

  • "Was seated at a table right next to the kitchen and staff area after making a reservation 3 weeks ahead of time - very disappointing. Hostess said she'd try and find us another table and never got back to us. Dry martini wasn't - too much vermouth - sent it back and staff was very nice about getting one more to my taste. Food was fair to good - but not amazing. Server forgot to send in our order for larger plates. It was so noisy, but server corrected the mistake quickly and sent our vegetable back and re-served them with our entrees. Perhaps, based on reviews, I was expecting an outstanding memorable experience. I was disappointed - but would probably go back, but would eat at the bar and hopefully have a better time."

  • "First time to box and bells. We ordered the oysters with a blood orange ice - very tasty! We then shared the hamburger and the fish. All very good. I would have liked the fish boned, but we still ate every last bit. Wonderful desserts to finish off our meal. We will be back."

  • "Excellent food, and very knowledgeable and helpful wait staff. We had duck confit, cabbage salad, brussel sprouts, sausage flatbread, fried chicken, and bone marrow - all very good."

  • "Little disappointed with food!! nothing remarkable, would try again before making a final decision on the food. Nice bar, nice wine list."
    Dined on 2/26/2014
  • "The food was very poorly paced, with dishes arriving one after the other, meaning much of the food had gotten cold before we could eat it. Overall a bad experience that I will not be repeating."
    Dined on 2/26/2014
  • "Had the burger and when they said aged beef fat I wasn't expecting it to be drenching the pretzel bun -completely unappetizing. Had the fried chicken with raw oyster aioli, the chicken was pretty bland but I enjoyed the fresh sea taste the oysters gave the mayo. My bf had the cod which was actually quite good and some rather average mussels served with an Indian inspired broth. The drinks were shallow on the pour and not quite as strong as I had read. Half the restaurant is bathed in Amsterdam red lights, impossible to see details on your plate- off-putting. The other half looked fine. Service is passable but for the price I'd expect a bit more friendly demeanor. This place fails it's hype."

  • "None of the dishes were excellent. It all seemed like ordinary bar food--salty, fatty, small portions--and definitely not a fair price for the quality. Nice wait staff, comfortable seating, decent ambiance."

  • "This is our second visit. The food was better than the first The stand outs were the cabbage salad, shrimp toast, and porchetta. The fries and mussels were fine (the nan is extremely greasy and I can count about one dozen mussels for $15). I did not like the texture of the fish crudo, it didn't taste fresh. I still feel the same as the first time in that the place is a hit and miss on food and not a great value for your money. The drinks are good."

  • "Superlative, creative food. And service to match. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience start to finish. About my only suggestion would be that it is pretty loud in the restaurant, to the point that I might consider installing a few fabric panels to absorb a bit of the noise. But for an evening like this, I can tolerate a bit of noise. It was fantastic."

  • "I was disappointed. The noise level made conversation uncomfortable. I had read a review last week in my local paper and based on one dish, and the overall good recommendation. I found out the scallops on spaetzle is no longer on the menu. Nothing jumped out at me to order, and now I can't remember what I did eat. That's how unmemorable it was. I could go to their menu and recall what I ordered, but why bother? We started out with raw oysters on the half shell, and they were so extra tiny, with some rock crystals in the shell. Also had to ask for cocktail forks. Not until the next day did I recall that I was never served the potato puree I had ordered. The bread was similar to buttered toast, and that was tasty."

  • "We enjoyed the flavors, and foodie-friendly dishes, but were disappointed by under-cooked mussels and a rather salty pork loin."
    Dined on 2/19/2014
  • "My husband and I thought each of our dishes were delicious but way too expensive for what they were. 22 for a single small crab, for instance. If you have money to burn and aren't that hungry then maybe this is the place for you. We dropped $100 at box and bells and then went and got pizza. That's pretty ridiculous."

  • "Great food - with a meaty focus. Lots of veggie sides but the carnivore plates are the stars here. Fried chicken with oyster mayo was fab as was the tongue pastrami toast. The burger on a pretzel roll looked yummy. Great cocktails too."

  • "You do not give me enough space to complain. Food uninspired, limited, and e pensive. No salad menu. If you do not eat meat don't bother to come. Rib-eye was very large but not very good. Will not return. To say we were very disappointed would be an understatement."

  • "Very disappointing dinner, very fatty meat, very greasy turnip and no flavor. And the red light doesn't help"

  • "the farro salad, deviled eggs and biscuits were great. the rest was so so. another way over hyped oakland resturaunt. the wine list did not blow me away. fried chicken wasn't crunchy although I liked the mayo. over priced compared to the delicious factor."

  • "James Syhabout has done again! He's hit it out of the ballpark again! Each dish was fabulous. The ambiance was casual and fun. What a terrific new addition to the neighborhood, another gem for the East Bay. Thank you!!!"

  • "Would have gotten a 5 if they hadn't charged me for bread to sop up their gravies. Bread cost should be in the price of the meal."
