Diner Reviews
  • "For the money spent, I would not recommend this restaurant. The main dining room was just about full on the Friday evening we dined and the noise level was quite disturbing. I like to enjoy the conversation with my spouse without having to ask him to repeat himself. The lamb lollipops we shared were good, rare and tasty, but the lamb sirloin I had for dinner was overcooked and minuscule - yes, lamb is not big. I had a strip of red pepper and a green bean for vegetables with a tower of potatoes that were lukewarm. Very disappointing when there are so many fresh vegetables available. My partner's scallops were too salty but a nice presentation! We mentioned the shortcomings of the meals and were given a wonderful dessert plate of chocolate."

  • "We have been to the Ranche a few times in the past, but this was the first time since the ownership change. The food was great and we love the atmosphere. However, we were very put off by the less than friendly host and waiter. Their attitude came across as unwelcoming, rude and demeaning. When you pay good money for a meal, there is an expectation of excellent customer service which was not the case."

  • "I took my girlfriend for her birthday and made her night! Away from the core of the city and nice and quiet it made for the perfect evening!!"

  • "We have lived in Calgary for over 40 years and had not yet visited Bow Valley Ranche. We went for my birthday and sat outsides with the kids (7 and 10 years old). Outside was great as the kids ran in Fish Creek while we waited for meals. The view was stunning and the artwork at the side of the building is very nice too. There were so many great options for appetizers that we tried the potato soup, the charcuterie, the beet salad and the oysters. They were so good that we had to scale down our meals a bit. The spinach and goat cheese stuffed chicken was incredible and my son loved his first try of Arctic Char. Would definitely go back for a special occasion as it is quite costly but worth it!"

  • "The Fish Creek Park location is beautiful. The food was excellent, very tasteful and will presented. The menu choices are what you would find in a fine dining restaurant. The service was excellent, very friendly staff. Because the restaurant is in a restored home from the early 1900's, you feel you are not only having a dinner but enjoying a part of Calgary's history. Would highly recommend this restaurant, we will definitely go back again and soon."

  • "We had a really lovely evening here! The food was excellent, the private outside table perfect and the service perfect!"

  • "A Saturday summer evening at the Ranche restaurant, beautiful setting with a view of the fields surrounding it in Fish Creek park. We counted no less than 4 brides and wedding parties that night. We've had great meals here in the past, unfortunately this night it seemed our food choices were less than top notch. The pheasant dish was tough, and the pickerel not as tender as it should have been. The number of large parties being accommodated may have affected this. The service was attentive and the verandah seating provided a very comfortable atmosphere. I'd try them another night where weddings are not so dominant a theme."

  • "Came in for brunch and everything was very wonderful, only thing was food was only okay. We ordered two steak and eggs, both mid rare and both got close to well done, instead. For the price we were expecting may be 3 eggs and more food like toast, perhaps but it was 2 eggs with a hand full of photos chips, which were good but not filling. First Coffee was a bit sour too, probably sat out for too long. Anyway, not ruling them out completely but probably wouldn't come back for bunch again."

  • "Patio ambiance was great - summer evening, flowers, trees; charming historic house. Food - good, classic stuff, although my meal was not hot enough. But, the venison was flavorful; the plate looked good. Birthday boy's Angus steak was excellent, though bordering on overcooked; the roasted peppers were notable. Wine selection was extensive, and it seemed impossible to make a bad choice. The waiter was apologetic about the lukewarm venison, and comp'd the desserts - which were rich, complex, beautifully presented. I'd skip the Pavlova next time - there are more interesting choices. Overall, attentive service and good food, though the drinks seem a bit pricey. Definitely a destination spot for a special occasion."

  • "We celebrated my father's 88th birthday here and when I made the reservation I specifically asked for a very nice table. When we arrived we were taken to a little corner with no window, no view and just tucked away. I asked the maitre d for a better table and he provided it to the people that came in with us. He said they were there first and first come first served. I expressed my concern because I had specifically requested a good table when making the reservation. The waitress apologized and stated that she missed my comment. So she accommodated us by pushing tables together in front of a window. I found the maitre d to be rude and "aggressively dismissive". The food is outstanding but WAY over priced."

  • "We brought our visitors from out of town here for brunch and it was just the right venue. The restaurant is in a historic home situated on a large property with a small outdoor exhibit, perfect for a leisurely stroll after eating. The food was very good and very nicely presented. It was not inexpensive but still reasonable for all that you get. A great place for special occasions."

  • "To sum it up.. Awesome! Food is amazing, wine list is among the best in Calgary and you simply can not beat this setting! We had a wonderful time. Special Thanks to Arthur and Jason. The service was a perfect balance of attentive and unobtrusive. Definitely my favorite restaurant in Calgary! :)"

  • "Came here for the first time with my wife to celebrate our anniversary. We had an amazing experience. This is the new favorite for our special occasions. The food was incredibe - everything was spot on, well cooked, well portioned with amazing presentation. Service was top shelf - there is an amazing team of staff that are covering for each other. Not hovering, but always aware and looking to improve our experience. Ambiance was great. It is upscale without feeling stuffy. Comfortable and homey. Lots of natrual light."

  • "Had hoped to enjoy a Brunch date with my Husband and the Service was fair not overly exciting. Need to ask for Salt & Pepper and a Steak knife. order a bottle of Champagne and was served a 373ml bottle for $80 disappointing as the server had start to open it, so I couldn't change my mind and order the 750 ml. They had all so ran out of the Lamb Ravioli so my husband needed to change his order."

  • "We had a great brunch there, the food was fantastic and the view from the patio can't be beat. Our waitress wasn't great, she wasn't very attentive, but the food and view made up for it!"

  • "We had the lamb and the chicken. Both were prepared to perfection!"

  • "The staff who stayed on after the change of ownership here remember their old clientele and go out of their way to make sure you still feel welcome. Some popular dishes run out so have an alternative choice. The pork belly was outstanding as an appie especially when paired with a great glass of Pinot Noir offered by the friendly and knowledgable Maitre D'. Eye-poppingly expensive but worth every penny."

  • "In the heat of the summer, nothing is better than to walk to The Ranche and sit on the patio, and with good friends, partake of the amazing views of the garden, and the park, and as well, the good food!!"

  • "Beautiful setting, service adequate, food expensive and disappointing. Cold soup, overdone ahi tuna served on inedible stale bun."

  • "Four friends brunched on a Stampede Sunday. Apparently two servers were off with stubbed heads. So we waited an hour and ten minutes for Eggs Benedict. Mine were great, as were the other two servings of traditional bennies, but the friend who ordered the smoked salmon variety told us afterward that hers were cold. Cold eggs on fish... blech. For dessert, we shared the chocolate decadence and the berry pavlova - lovely presentation. I think the restaurant should have comped at least one of the desserts to make up for our very long wait - especially since they knew it was a birthday for one of us, but that didn't happen. So, to sum up, the service (when we got some) was ok, the food was quite lovely, and the surroundings were charming."

  • "Service slow. repeatedly request coffee and water refills. if we weren't hosting out of town friends, we would have simply walked out. seated at a table directly in the sun without an umbrella. A VERY poor dining experience and quite an embarrassment for us."

  • "The food was fresh and well presented. The place was really nice with details to show the history. The waiter was pleasant and professional. We only wished he knew more about the place. We ordered the cold cut platter which was very nice. Good wine collection. One of the steaks was a little over cooked (we ordered medium rare), the other one was perfect. The lamb shank was well done and tasteful. The pork tasted really good with its pecan sauce. Our two orders of venison were both good. The meat was fresh and tender and the flavor was well balanced. The char was dry and plain, but the fish was fresh. It was over all a nice experience."

  • "A friend and myself rode our bicycles to Bow Valley Ranche for brunch. I was disappointed that on the weekend the lunch menu was not available. I ordered a spinach salad and my friend ordered eggs benedict. The salad arrived long before my friend's dish, our server did take note of this and did not charge us for our beverages as compensation. My friend enjoyed the eggs benedict very much and the spinach salad was good, but not exceptional. It was a sunny day and we were able to sit on the patio, it was a lovely setting with the potted plants and the surrounding garden. The server offered to fill our water bottles for our return bicycle ride , which was considerate. I would definitely return to the Ranche but next time for lunch."

  • "We went on Friday July 4. The food was very nice, as was the wine, but we were seated in the main room, which was very noisy with a number of large groups. Our service was not great. The waiter got the drinks order wrong twice, and then took forever to take our food order, then forever to come and ask us about dessert then forever to come and take the dessert order. The room was not that busy with many empty tables, so we could not see why things took so long. It spoiled a special birthday and I would have expected more for a $400 bill for 7 people. I would ask for seating in one of the smaller rooms in future to cut the noise. Lovely setting as always."

  • "My wife and I took Australian friends visiting Calgary to lunch at the BV Ranche. They were stunned by the location, the building and the historical connections with Calgary. Then came lunch. We enjoyed the Ploughman's Plate, the bison, and soup. All were excellent. Our server, Marwen, was the absolute best. We would return to the BV Ranche for a meal in a moment and we are telling all our friends what a great place it is and especially one to take visitors to the city."

  • "Learning about the history of Bow Valley Ranch and being able to sit and dine at that location was very special for me and my wife on our 23 rd. anniversary. This was our first visit but will not be our last. Even though we live on the opposite side of the city we want to learn more about the history of Bow Valley and Fish Creek park. The food was outstanding and our waiter's personality added to our enjoyment of the meal."

  • "The presentation and taste of our meal was delightful. The gentlemen looking after us was outstanding. He made us feel extremely welcome and as we were celebrating our 43rd anniversary went out of his way to ensure we enjoyed our visit to the Ranch. This was our first opportunity to dine at the Ranch since its reopening and after this most enjoyable experience we will definitely be dining there frequently."

I can't wait to come back and enjoy another wonderful dinner. The food was fabulous, service was exceptional and all around great time. see you soon. P.S. I am going to recommend you to all my friends and family. Thanks for the great time. Mike"

  • "My wife and I got married in FC Park on Saturday. Our two friends and us then went to BVR for brunch. Upon arrival we were greeted by the most rude (he was an older middle-eastern man) server. He did not acknowledge (despite our clothes) that we had just gotten married; at one point kicked my wife's sash on her dress out of the way as he filled our water glasses and then literally 'dumped' the cheese platter appetizer on the table and stated 'here's your cheese' and left. Our one friend was infuriated at the repeated rudeness and complained to the manager. Our server was replaced by a great one - Addy and he came by later with port for all of us and apologized. Given the expensiveness of the meal I would give this experience 6/10."

  • "Exceeded all of our expectations! My fiancé and I went on our six year dating anniversary. The location is very beautiful and had a very Canadian themed decor + menu. It defintally lives up to its reputation. Dress would be business casual and pricing is aligned with the portion and quality of food. Their menu is posted on their website along with their prices. We would highly recommend and already have to our families. We will also be returning to try more of the items on the menu."

  • "What a lovely spot for a restaurant! The ambiance is wonderful, the food was excellent (my husband loved, loved, his steak), they were super accommodating with the kids, but what stands out the most was the fantastic service. We will definitely go back here, probably with in-laws or guests as it is a fantastic place to take out-of-towners."
