Bow & Stern Oyster Bar presents the bustling West Town neighborhood with an unprecedented dining experience. The raw bar and seafood-centric restaurant promotes a fishing and farm-to-table kitchen, helmed by executive chef Brian Greene. Oysters are the star here year-round, with 6 to 12 varieties offered daily, as well as menu specialties ranging from tuna tartar, Cioppino, and crispy whole fish; to pork belly scallops, rock lobster & grilled wagyu sirloin and a Bow burger. The extensive bar at Bow & Stern showcases Midwestern brewers, straightforward wines (hand-selected to pair), and seasonal craft cocktails.   • "Uneven quality to food and drinks. Good rye manhattan; unable to make ginger vodka martini. Skimpy appetizer that is trademark, mushroom and snail dish and needs more pizzazz; salad a salad. Lobster dish good; fish average - skimpy portion not done with any imagination and vegetables that were sparse and boring. Wines good and pricey. Dessert good - lemon - and not necessary, cherry dish. Service attentive and somewhat obsequious."

  • "Our waitress was outstanding, explaining in perfect detail the varied menu offerings for our larger group of six. VERY knowledgeable about the wine list, oysters, and specials of the day. Everyone was impressed with the presentation and portions of their dinners. Many dishes were ideal to share, which is how I'd recommend dining with a larger group. With a seasonal menu and daily fresh oyster selections, Bow & Stern is definitely a neighborhood gem that you can visit regularly and never tire of the selection."

  • "We went for the Tuesday 5 -7 half price oysters and wine. Enjoyed a dozen oysters (lovely and fresh), the salmon tartar, the beet salad, octopus appetizer, bottle of Chablis (perfect with the oysters) and finally two desserts. All of the dishes were tasty and well executed. Somehow got to $130 including tax and tip - no entrees or coffee, so it was a little pricey for a Tuesday dinner in a neighborhood bar."

  • "This was my second visit to B&S Oyster Bar. Both times we ordered a variety of oysters (3 for under 10 bucks) and were delighted with the taste; only drawback is they serve them fresh (obviously) and sometimes are out of said 'variety'. The pork belly and scallops (slightly on the salty side) were delicious and I would definitely recommend them. My partner had the halibut and was equally satisfied... the portions are sizeable and nicely served. We also enjoyed their cocktails and tried different kinds on each visit."

  • "I have never had oysters, these were fresh and I tried two different kinds. Love them! I also had the Maine Mussels they were fresh and had a really good broth that you can taste the fennel in. the burrata & chips was another delicious starter. It had fresh creamy mozzerella cheese and baked kale chips , cauliflower, sunchoke, brussels and mushrooms. Our srever was veryknowledgable and the ineterior of the building is ncie with large windows open to outside in an older chicago neighborhood. I love it, can't wait to come back to Chicago to come here again."

  • "The list of available oysters was endless, and they were all delicious. The pour for the wine by the glass was a little light. They could have filled the glass a wee bit more for the price. The whole crispy fish was excellent and was served on a bed of greens and vegetables which was so much better than being smothered in sauce (like it's served at most Asian restaurants). The waitstaff was pleasant and cheery."

We had a Living Social deal for this place and wish we knew ahead of time how strict they were going to be about the voucher, but overall the experience was amazing! I had the pork belly scallops and I wouldn't have traded it for anything. It was absolutely fabulous. The drinks were also lovely. The grilled baby octopus was also great. I like the Asian fusion twist. The oyster selection was also wonderful. Our server was also wonderful. She was smart, attentive, and knowledgeable. It's great to see a great seafood restaurant in this area. We will definitely be back but we'll make sure to read the fine print first!"

  • "Had an ok experience. I would go back just for oysters and sit at the bar. They were out of three things we wanted to order by 8:30. We got the Cippino which was awful--the broth was too thick and didn't have any flavor. The service was mediocre at best."

  • "During Happy Hour, oysters (served in 3's) are $1-1.25. Great way to try different varieties. All food we tried was well prepared, shareable and great with beer or cocktails. Small selection but plenty of good things from the land, sea and air. There was a live Blues duo playing on Friday after work. Great stop before gigs at the UC. Parking was easy. Service was helpful if not a bit intrusive between waitstaff, water person, and various bussers. Beautiful atrium section as well as 2 bars. Window walls opened to let in the outside. Small TV's above the bar. Pretty much a little something for everyone. Will return."

  • "Came for the oysters, stayed for the salmon tartare, laughing bird shrimp and grilled octopus. All were outstanding. Evidently one of the most popular items on the menu, the burrata and chips was not a hit for us. It was like kale chip nachos; visually unappealing and an odd combo of burnt-tasting leaves and cheese. That's okay, we had plenty of the good stuff to keep us busy. The bartendar was terrific (we sat at the bar), making recommendations and starting us out with a cocktail before we switched to wine. We'll be back to try the cioppino and the curry coconut."

  • "Brought my husband here for an early Father's Day dinner. Service was nice - friendly but not overbearing. Oysters were extremely fresh and our entrees were quite good. I wish there were a few more offerings of wines by the glass - we drove and couldn't split a bottle between the two of us, and I saw some great wines on the menu but we couldn't try them that time."

  • "I bought a GROUPON for Bow & Stern after returning from a trip to Seattle where I ate oysters for breakfast, lunch and dinner! I LOVE OYSTERS! 4 diners needed to be present to use the Groupon. I grabbed my 3 closest foodie friends and off we went! My expectations were beyond exceeded when I walked into the restaurant. WOW! Am I back in Seattle? I feel like I'm on vacation! I'm on a boat! The restaurant is both chic and kitchy. Its nautical theme was met by the elegance of a fine dining restaurant. Our waitress was wonderful! She was super helpful at explaining the wine list and oyster selection. Her recommendations were spot on! A man with a guitar played live blues for the diners. I will be returning to Bow & Stern."

  • "Came here for oyster happy hour, stayed (with Groupon) for dinner. Sunset Beach is a great choice, especially together with a cider on tap that's stored in reposado barrels! Appetizer dinner is also highly recommendable - burrata and kale salad combines my favorite vegetables in one outstanding dish (with oyster mushrooms and cauliflower!), grilled octopus is a bit chewy but has great flavor, and goes the extra mile with a soba noodles and a flavorful broth. Mussels - oh my, ask for extra bread when you order the dish, you'll need it for the standout thick tomato broth (mussels themselves are great, too). Tuna tartare is good (not amazing like the others), mostly because of the 2 different flatbreads, aioli verde, and arugula salad."

  • "The food was really great, but whenever it was delivered the waiter couldn't walk away fast enough. No description of what was on the plate or if we needed anything. I know they use a front and back waiter system and the front waiter did stop by to see how we were doing, but the back waiter had to be stopped from walking away at each course to describe what was on the plate. Other than the oyster delivery, that was very informative."

  • "My husband and I found ourselves at Bow & Stern on our 15th wedding anniversary after finding unanticipated time between two birthday celebrations. Our experience had a few hiccups (the waitress was new and the wine we ordered was out; the sommalier showed up with a different bottle about 15 minutes later, but it was very good and less expensive than the one we initially chose!) but we had a terrific dining experience and would definitely go back. The food was amazing - the oysters were great and the tuna was delicious. The waitress found out it was our anniversary and brought us dessert (molten dolce de leche cake - yummy!!!) and we had fun talking to the tables next to us. It was great and we will be back!"

  • "Celebrating a family birthday request for oysters so tried out this West Town treasure. Everyone was just delighted with their dinners. Very fresh, inventive and delicious. Mussles, grilled octopus, salmon, grilled romain salad and the dolce de leche lava cake with sour cream ice cream was amazing. Even the chicken thighs were surprising and scrumptious. At least as good as the food, our server was wonderful--knew her stuff and made us feel like we were longtime favorite customers. We'll be back to try the oyster happy hour soon."

  • "Potential was there. Great menu. Great Wine and Beer Selection. Service and Execution unfortunately weren't. Raw Oysters were awesome though. :) Baked oysters took over 30 minutes and when they came a few were cold. The honeycrisp apple and fennel salad could have used more fennel. Was supposed to have blue cheese on it according to the menu. Not one morsel. The scallops with Pork Belly sounded delicious put the pork belly was just a piece of congealed lard. "

  • "We sat by ourselves with out anybody so much as offering us water for 20 minutes. When we did get a server - she was very nice and very quirky. Our food came whenever it did, we got things we'd never ordered and issued some things that we did order. They were out of several beers on their list that my friend wanted and couldn't manage to scare up any grapefruit juice for my cocktail - which was also on the menu. It's a great looking room, and the bar scene looked fun. But our service was a joke and the food was tasty - but I wish we'd tasted more of what we'd ordered and not just random dishes that cam out. We did love (and order) the pastrami cured salmon!"

  • "We ordered the ciopino and when it came it was very spicy. When we pushed the waitress to ask the chef it came back that they had run out of ciopino assume and he/she had substituted the spicy assume that they put on the mussels. Bad choice and unprofessional."

  • "Our food was delicious. We had grilled octopus and shrimp to start. For dinner my mom had tuna, her friend and I had lobster tail and my brother had the pork belly. The entrees were good served with sautéed kale, not my choice of vegetable but it was good. I wanted a side of potatoes for the table and the only option was fries. The fries were ok, but I would have preferred a healthier option of potatoes. Our server was nice, but we poured our own wine and water through the meal. "

  • "Absolutely delicious - I went with a friend on a random weeknight. Started with oysters and our server was very knowledgable in helping us pick out the perfect combination of nightly East and West coast selections. I ended up with the pork chop & scallops that had a great modern twist on a nontraditional surf & turf option (had a cherry glaze that was just the right balance of tart and sweet), and my friend had the Cioppino and it was fantastic. I might have snuck a few too many bites from hers... Also a great variety of craft beer, wine, and cocktails to compliment your meal. Very reasonable price for 2 people. Would definitely recommend for a date night spot or a larger group to go to start off a girls night! Will definitely return."

  • "Everyone is friendly and helpful from the moment you walk through the door to the time you leave, which is one of the most important things I look for in a restaurant. Some restaurants don't realize the importance of that and choose the wrong staff, or have the wrong approach. There are a lot of restaurants out there that have outstanding food, but my husband and I will never walk in again due to their 'too cool to be nice and helpful' attitude. So far, you don't have to worry about that here. It's trendy, delicious and friendly!"

To start with, we showed up on the wrong night from when we had our reservation (thank you, Open Table, for defaulting to the following day during booking), but the hostess was very accomodating and made no fuss about it. The oysters were as good as promised. The grilled octopus appetizer was to die for, and our fav of the night (we ordered seconds). Can't wait to go back again!"
