A word from Bourbon Steak - Four Seasons Washington DC
Featuring contemporary American fare with a focus on seasonal ingredients, BOURBON STEAK offers all-natural, organic and hormone free cuts of beef and the freshest seafood available worldwide. Prior to grilling, all meats at BOURBON STEAK are first poached to mouthwatering tenderness-red meats in butter, lamb in olive oil and pork in bacon fat.

Keeping with the nation’s capital’s emphasis on power daytime dining, BOURBON STEAK is one of the first Michael Mina restaurants to serve lunch. Guests can anticipate new salad entrées accompanied by homemade, fresh from the oven bread, each specifically created to complement the salad it is paired with.

Rockwell Group of New York composed a design scheme which reflects the elegant informality of Mina’s modern American cuisine, while also paying tribute to the classical stature of the hotel. Natural materials and crafted accents surround the space, from seeded and rubbed glass, to stitched leather and wood.

I love steak houses. Been to dozens of different ones, all around the country. So, my review may be colored by my by my memories of truly great meals I've had in the past. But, since Bourbon Steak styles itself as world class (it certainly charges world class prices), I don't think unfair to compare. In short, this emperor has no clothes. The food is decidedly average. The service is okay, but nothing of special note for a place of this supposed quality. And the ambiance is wholly underwhelming. The entire experience was three stars, but I docked a star for so badly meeting advertised expectations. Save your money and go somewhere else.

  • Great anniversary dinner...but...

My wife and I had a great anniversary dinner on Saturday. We were greeted with well wishes from the hostess and again at the table. Then we were welcomed with champagne, a great way to start the evening. The food and service was excellent, wish we could have tried dessert but we were running late for a show. The one comment, and maybe this is a new trend (stupid one), but if you are coming over to pour champagne the second I sit down and wishing us a happy anniversary, I feel the restaurant should also pick up the tab on that champagne. We were surprised to see it in the bill and paid it because we were running late. I feel this is a really under-minded attempt to just boost the bill and I will be much more cognizant next time.

An overall excellent experience. Although the drink list was a bit unclear, the cocktail I randomly chose was outstanding. Instead of bread for starters, they serve three types of French fries and three dipping sauces. The curry dipping sauce was not great nor was the cheese flavored sauce, but the honey mustard sauce was tasty. As for dinner, the waiter warned us about ordering too many sides, but we insisted on getting 5 different sides for three people. Needless to say it was way to much. Sides were all excellent, but take the waiters recommendation as the portions are big. The steaks were outstanding. I ordered mine medium and it definitely came out med. rare. Still, it was a delicious steak. Service was outstanding and fast.

  • Too Much Butter
    OpenTable Diner Since 2010
    Dined on 8/9/2014
I understand that butter is decadent and is used liberally in most expensive dishes, but this restaurant goes a little too far. They poach all the steaks in it, they drench the rolls that come to the table, every side dish is overwhlemed with it. It just seems a little too much. At this level, it would make more sense to have more sophisticated light (EVOO) dishes. Everything is so heavy, seems a little glutenous which makes it feel cheap or unsophisticated. Just something to think about...

So a Four Seasons hotel. This implies diners leaving when they see high prices (but they should have checked the menu on line). The food here is incredible. I recommend the tuna tartare and the steaks. I tried the lobster pot pie. It was good (a tiny bit over cooked). The downsides are service and atmosphere. Out waitress said all/every one of the right things involved in being gracious. But it didn't seem to wash. It wasn't about being gracious and giving the gift of a spectacular experience. The design of the restaurant is antiquated (the least of my concerns). So, some very big pluses, and some things that are not bad, but that gratuitously could could be better--there does not seem to be an adult in the room overseeing everything.

The appetizers and cocktails were great. However, steaks were overcooked. I had a baked potato that was so hard I couldn't cut it with a steak knife. Stick with Morton's or the Palm if you want steak done right.

Almost everything about our meal was lovely especially the birthday greeting & dessert bites, exceptional service & divine food. We had 2 young vegetarians along who were resigned to dining on salad & sides but thrilled to be served a quinoa burger & delicious gnocchi--"special creations" from the chef. The ONLY downside to our experience was no fault of the restaurant or its staff but rather the behavior of some impolite fellow diners (see below). There were many journalists/business types seated nearby and the Africa Summit was in town. Many diners were toting photography equipment & working on laptops & cell phones which definitely detracted from the ambiance of our intimate family celebration. Maybe this is always the vibe?

Three of the four of us were not huge red meat eaters, but we wanted to give it a try. And man, we weren't disappointed. At all. Not only were each of our steaks (2 of us had the Wagyu New York Strip, 2 had the Waygu Flatiron) the best steaks we have ever had, but the sides (whipped potatoes with gravy, truffle mac and cheese, sautéed spinach, asparagus, and crab hushpuppies), the truffle dinner rolls, the drinks (Crystal Clear Mojito, The Potomac Martini, and the Jefferson), and the service were impeccable and made for the perfect meal. We all agreed we'd come back the next time we were craving steak or just a lovely night out. It's not the cheapest meal in town, but for the quality and service you get, it's worth every penny.

I'm not normally a fan of steak places. I normally see them as too expensive and too much food. Bourbon Steak however has ruined me for all future steaks. It is easy to drop some cash here and as long as you are denting your wallet, choose the Waygu. We got the hanger steak and the best thing I can say is that it melts in your mouth. Prepared medium rare it is almost creamy in its texture. The butter, scallion emulsion, and bourbon sauce is perfect on the beef. The trio of fries with the trio of sauces while were were waiting was an over the top treat.

From the wine and cocktails, to the steak, to the strawberry sorbet, most everything was stellar. Chicken was just OK, but you don't expect to get chicken in a place like this. Not only will the manager check on you after the meal like most upscale restaurants, but he suggests something else to eat and addresses you by name...it's the little things, right?

this is a famous restaurant and the gracious service, creative menu, pleasant atmosphere -- and high prices -- all lived up to the hype. the beef lived up to its reputation, and husband, who is the expert carnivore, preferred the "regular" NY Strip to the Wagyu mini-filet we shared. the appetizer agnolotti were amazingly delicious, the sides of prawns (a regular on the menu) and creamed spinach were also excellent, as was the baked potato. the truffle-butter bread is also addicting, and the desserts were scrumptious. wife's fish was good. the portions, as server noted, are generous, so a group might enjoy ordering a variety of appetizers, sides, and accompaniments rather than entrees. unless you love a great steak.

Had a 8 oz Filet Mignon here. Ordered Medium Rare, steak came Meduim Rare+ and felt a little bit dry, but was delicious none the less. Ordered the Foie Gras as a side. Portion was reasonable but not huge as I had hoped. Had a glass of premium wine at $45, decent. Overall a nice meal although a bit on the expensive side. Place was humming and quite full. Reservations recommended. As the restaurant was busy, service was less attentive than I would have expected for a restaurant of this calibre.

Enjoyed one of the best meals of my life! We arrived early and were seated right away. The birthday card from staff was a nice touch. Cocktails were amazing (The Killa B and the PC 2014) as were the trio of frites and rolls with truffle butter. The Strawberry Gazpacho was probably the most beautiful dish I have ever been served. My husband enjoyed the wedge salad, the bone-in New York Strip from VA (aged 50 days) and the salt-baked potato. I had the Lobster Pot Pie, reassembled table-side, which was phenomenal. I ended the meal with the Summer Panna Cotta and Moscato. We were checked on often by many of the staff and Colin provided excellent customer service. Can't wait for an encore meal. We'll be back!

We have dined at Bourbon Steak on several occasions, and as with this dining, the steaks were perfectly prepared, juicy, and well seasoned. Serving sides were ample, and enough to serve two people. For appetizers, the Iceberg Wedge Salad was large, loaded with bacon & Bleu cheese. The Asparagus Salad was also tasty. We each had Porterhouse steaks for entrees, which were flawless. Service throughout the evening was attentive and friendly. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

With some of the highest prices around and being located in a city that has a vibrant restaurant scene, expectations are a little higher, and the most expensive restaurants should really wow you. We weren't wowed. I realize that restaurants with stellar reputations like Bourbon Steak don't appreciate reviews like this and some reviewers tend to wear rose-colored glasses when they're in one of the city's top restaurants, so forgive me if I've been to enough "best restaurants in the [name your] city" to be able to distinguish good from great. This was just good. The service by committee method left something to be desired, with one server strangely removing our bread plates before we'd even touched the bread. Still a hot bar scene.
