Diner Reviews
  • "We had a quick lunch here but were impressed by short ribs tacos and deconstructed salmon salad. Staff were really friendly. Definitely will be back to try the rest of the Latin-inspired menu."

  • "Went twice for brunch with a friend and ordered 8 different items, two of which were pretty good/decent (burger, carene asada, shrimp), but the others were generally disappointing due to a near complete lack of seasoning (shrimp cakes, salmon salad especially). It's as if the chef doesn't believe in bold flavors, or much marinade or seasoning (even basics such as pepper or garlic). If you don't prefer bold flavors, or even seasoned foods, this place would be a great fit. It's too bad, because the space and service were GREAT."

  • "Title line says it all. Our waitress, Heather, ignored us most of our visit. She sat down at another table with what appeared to be friends of her's. The busser ended up doing a great job taking care of us after numerous attempts to get her attention."

  • "Food was ok, not outstanding, and should be for the price. The bourbon drink was good. Service was fine... but what's up with the name?"

  • "I enjoyed my second meal here. The salmon salad was disappointing. We were expecting a nice salad but it came in an artsy "composed" style n which the elements didn't really blend. The salmon itself was tasty. All the other food we had was delicious. Service was slow and not particularly friendly but I think that was just this one waiter."

  • "We were there for Brunch. The food was okay, but not great. More than that, it took over 40 minutes to get our food. We had to ask for an update after 30 minutes."
    Dined on 4/6/2014
  • "The poached egg that is deep fried on top of a homemade tortilla, with crab, pork belly, kale & tomatillo sauce was the BEST brunch item that I have ever had!!! The egg was crispy on the outside & runny when you cut into it. I don't know how they do it, but if hope they never stop doing it!"

  • "The paella was bland and undercooked except for the mussels which were over cooked. Short rib appetizer was tender but flavored disagreeable. The stuffed chili appetizer was served in a thick mole sludge again flavors were not agreeable. The service was very good but the food fell short."

  • "Great food, good drink, good service and nice neighbourhood."

  • "Went with colleagues from work. Service was quite attentive. We ordered several small plates. Each quite tasty. I'd return again, soon."

  • "The name doesn't match the food, so I was surprised by the menu. Went for lunch and had the shrimp tacos and pork belly tacos. They were really good. Also had ceviche appetizer and it was delicious. Booths, red leather and wood ambiance, which I really liked. Service was good. I would definitely go back and definitely recommend!"

  • "The booth was slightly uncomfortable for someone of short stature and the place was overall pretty loud and tiny. We went at a slightly early time of 6:30 to avoid the rush. Brussel sprouts were a bit too balsamic-glazed and flavorful. Paella was good, I wish there was more seafood in it. Very large sized and good for 3-4 people. Pork belly taquito was great. I would come back for it alone. Papas Fritas with Carne Asada was good, but not that memorable. The fries were a bit too salty for me. Meatballs were SPICY and smoky. The flatbread that came with it didn't seem to be the right size to go with it. Sangria was pretty good. I'd go here for drinks and the taquito. The rest was a bit overpriced for what they were."
    Dined on 3/20/2014
  • "Very attractive presentation on the salmon salad. I would go back. Was not very crowded. Lunch menu is limited compared to dinner menu."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "Tacos were great, the accompanying cabbage slaw is only okay. The kobe beef short rib was quite American and our favorite dish! The place can get pretty loud (booming) if full."
    Dined on 3/18/2014
  • "During this visit the food was good but not as good as usual. Great Pork Belly. Ceviche was a bit bland - need a little more zing maybe? Ribeye Steak was a bit over cooked and chewy. Best sundae in town!"

  • "Great lunch special - beef stew w/ rice & beans. Even tempted by the name to have an excellent Woodford bourbon cocktail."

  • "Have stopped by twice in the last couple of weeks. The staff are super nice, the bartender takes good care of you and is a good guy. Food is amazing, excellent variety on the menu and the plantain fritters for dessert are awesome."
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "Would go back just for these tacos. Plantain fritters were so good,"

  • "We were very disappointed with where we were seated. We asked for a private table and they sat us at a long table that sat many different parties together. There was a table for 4 open and we asked the guy if we could sit there, he said that they did not break up tables of four. About 5 minutes later a party of two came in and he split the table for four into two tables for two I felt very unimportant as a guest of their establishment. We were disappointed with the drinks and food and felt that it was nothing special. we will not eat there again. On a positive note our waitress was good."

  • "Great spot to stop by enjoy a great brunch and some bottomless mimosa's. Not your everyday brunch menu which is refreshing. Great service and atmosphere."

  • "We went to Bourbon and Beef for an overdue Valentine brunch. The room was quiet, but it should not have been. Our meal was beautiful plated and delicious. We had great service and drinks mixed by a very entertaining bartender with cool waxed mustache. I had a salmon salad and the salmon was cooked perfectly. Bob's eggs with tomatillo hollandaise were a yummy work of art. The fun music was at a comfortable level to enjoy and we could still talk as well."

  • "The Brûlée made with rice was out of this world. Very complex and yummy. The short rib taco and the chile relliano were diffent but very delicious."
    Dined on 3/7/2014
  • "OK, everyone's doing tapas. What's not to like for the restaurant? Charge entree prices for appetizer portions and get customers to order more than a couple of dishes each. The good: Ceviches Rib Eye Not so good: The "out of this world" brussel sprouts: really? It was cooked beyond recognition. If I hated brussel sprouts that much that you have to cook it beyond recognition and smother it in sauce, I wouldn't have ordered it. Meh: Papas fritas-- I always order these when available. The fries were tasty, but the strip steak was boring."

  • "Explain to me about the name. They don't have an extensive selection of bourbon or beef. Their menu is in Spanish. Overall, brunch was yummy. Portions were perfect for me but some might consider it smaller than expected."
    Dined on 3/2/2014
  • "It was my first time dining at Bourbon and Beef, the food is simple but elegantly presented. Plates are on a small side but with a regular entry price. Not too much of a selection for a tapas place. In my opinion too many tables are crammed in to a too small place. Very loud, you may have a hard time to hear your own conversation. At the time of my dinner was not so crowded but yet y my waiter was very slow and not helpful. I may visit this place again, but I will have to first forget my not so great experience."

  • "Service is good. However, food taste wise is just so so."

  • "We were looking forward to trying this newer restaurant - however the food was just ok! Signature rib eye was expensive an ordinary. Mussels were very smokey, small and ok with flavor. Tuna good but small portion and the best item was the chile rellano with mole. I was bummed as was looking forward to a new great spot to frequent ."

  • "The food was tasty. Good to share. Not large portions. Small and medium plates. Did not try the Steak. Limited menu but OK. I would go back."

  • "This was the second time going and the food and cocktails are enjoyable and tasty. It’s a small, narrow restaurant so it can be vibrant but it’s worth visiting if you are in Rockridge."
    Dined on 2/25/2014
  • "Bourbon and Beef has an interesting menu and a fun atmosphere. The food is at least 50% overpriced. The wine list is OK, but somewhat limited, with the selections we had also overpriced. For a similar style of food Duende is better food for the money."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "...very attentive wait staff who didn't try to overload our entree choice with additional items. We both had paella and a recommended Brussels sprout salad. Both items were good. Our reservations were at 6PM. Our next visit would be later to avoid the noisy bat scene."

  • "Food is great! Great atmosphere! One of my favorite date night destinations. Pork Belly is one of the best I ever had. Wanted to try the Mole but they were out. Hope to try that on my next visit."

  • "Seriously...perfect! Food, drinks and service have all been top notch each time I've been there!"

  • "The version of a shrimp cocktail here was nothing like the standard, and far better. Just outstanding, smoky taste to the shrimp, great seasoning, complex flavors. Highly recommended. We also found the shrimp almond cakes nothing like expected but really excellent. Not sure why the TV is necessary and would recommend they have it off expect during sporting events they really want to have on as it detracts from the rest of the place."

  • "We went here for our Valentine's dinner, and the place was packed. We got there right as the couple before us was taking the last two-person table in the dining room, so we had to sit at the large community table at the front. No big deal. Our server was super friendly and helpful, giving us some great suggestions. The mushroom risotto special was awesome. I really wanted to lick the plate clean. The carne asada tacos and crispy pork belly dishes were equally delicious. The biggest disappointment of the night were the shrimp cakes, which were unbearably salty. We probably should have sent it back to the kitchen. All in all, we enjoyed our dinner, and will be back for more someday."

  • "The food is fantastic. We went along with others' suggestions to have the Ribeye, Brussels Sprouts, Chili Relleno, and had the Valentine's special dessert of a Chocolate cake oozing with Mexica hotfudge and carmel and accompanied by Dulce deleche ice cream. we also had signature Bourbon cocktails. The Brussels sprouts were the best we've ever eaten. The Balsamic reduction with goat cheeze and almond, so delicious. The Chili Relleno was excellent, the mole superb. The Ribeye aged and presented in a tasty wine sauce. We were in dining heaven and look forward to bringing our friends. Also be prepared for higher tier prices, but because selections are meant to be shared, it works out well. The chef has our kudos!!!"

  • "We came for Valentine's day, if that changes anything. This place was not bad. If I could offer up one piece of advice, get the macaroni and cheese dish. Honestly, it exceeds all expectations. However, some members of the staff could brush up on their customer service (not Heather though, she was great.) The paella typified the "just okay" vibe of the food. The muscles were the smallest muscles me and my date had ever eaten. The shrimp was delicious."
